सर्वं व्याप्तमिदं देवा वृत्रेण जगदव्ययम्। न ह्यस्य सदृशं किञ्चित्प्रतिघाताय यद्भवेत् ॥५-१०-१॥
sarvaṁ vyāptamidaṁ devā vṛtreṇa jagadavyayam। na hyasya sadṛśaṁ kiñcitpratighātāya yadbhavet ॥5-10-1॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; इदम् (idam) - this; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vritra; जगत् (jagat) - world; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; सदृशम् (sadṛśam) - equal; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; प्रतिघाताय (pratighātāya) - for opposition; यत् (yat) - which; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be;]
(All this, O gods, is pervaded by Vritra, the imperishable world. Indeed, there is nothing equal to him that may be for opposition.)
O gods, Vritra has pervaded the entire imperishable world. There is nothing that can oppose him.
समर्थो ह्यभवं पूर्वमसमर्थोऽस्मि साम्प्रतम्। कथं कुर्यां नु भद्रं वो दुष्प्रधर्षः स मे मतः ॥५-१०-२॥
samartho hyabhavaṁ pūrvamasamartho'smi sāmpratam। kathaṁ kuryāṁ nu bhadraṁ vo duṣpradharṣaḥ sa me mataḥ ॥5-10-2॥
[समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; हि (hi) - indeed; अभवम् (abhavam) - was; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; असमर्थः (asamarthaḥ) - incapable; अस्मि (asmi) - am; साम्प्रतम् (sāmpratam) - now; कथम् (katham) - how; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - can do; नु (nu) - indeed; भद्रम् (bhadram) - good; वः (vaḥ) - for you; दुष्प्रधर्षः (duṣpradharṣaḥ) - difficult to overcome; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - my; मतः (mataḥ) - opinion;]
(I was capable formerly, now I am incapable. How indeed can I do good for you? He is difficult to overcome, in my opinion.)
I used to be capable in the past, but now I find myself incapable. How can I possibly do good for you? In my opinion, he is difficult to overcome.
तेजस्वी च महात्मा च युद्धे चामितविक्रमः। ग्रसेत्त्रिभुवनं सर्वं सदेवासुरमानुषम् ॥५-१०-३॥
tejasvī ca mahātmā ca yuddhe cāmitavikramaḥ। grasettribhuvanaṃ sarvaṃ sadevāsuramānuṣam ॥5-10-3॥
[तेजस्वी (tejasvī) - brilliant; च (ca) - and; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; च (ca) - and; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; च (ca) - and; अमितविक्रमः (amitavikramaḥ) - of immeasurable valor; ग्रसेत् (graset) - could devour; त्रिभुवनं (tribhuvanaṃ) - the three worlds; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; स (sa) - with; देव (deva) - gods; असुर (asura) - demons; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - humans;]
(Brilliant and great-souled and of immeasurable valor in battle, he could devour all the three worlds with gods, demons, and humans.)
He is brilliant, great-souled, and possesses immeasurable valor in battle; he could consume all three worlds, including gods, demons, and humans.
तस्माद्विनिश्चयमिमं शृणुध्वं मे दिवौकसः। विष्णोः क्षयमुपागम्य समेत्य च महात्मना ॥ तेन संमन्त्र्य वेत्स्यामो वधोपायं दुरात्मनः ॥५-१०-४॥
tasmādviniścayamimaṃ śṛṇudhvaṃ me divaukasaḥ। viṣṇoḥ kṣayamupāgamya sametya ca mahātmanā ॥ tena saṃmantrya vetsyāmo vadhopāyaṃ durātmanaḥ ॥5-10-4॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; विनिश्चयम् (viniścayam) - decision; इमम् (imam) - this; शृणुध्वम् (śṛṇudhvam) - hear; मे (me) - my; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - O dwellers of heaven; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Vishnu; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - abode; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having arrived; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; च (ca) - and; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - with the great soul; तेन (tena) - with him; संमन्त्र्य (saṃmantrya) - having deliberated; वेत्स्यामः (vetsyāmaḥ) - we shall know; वधोपायम् (vadhopāyam) - the means of killing; दुरात्मनः (durātmanaḥ) - of the wicked soul;]
(Therefore, hear this decision of mine, O dwellers of heaven. Having arrived at the abode of Vishnu and having assembled with the great soul, having deliberated with him, we shall know the means of killing the wicked soul.)
Therefore, listen to my decision, O gods. After reaching Vishnu's abode and assembling with the great soul, we will deliberate with him to find a way to kill the wicked one.
शल्य उवाच॥

एवमुक्ते मघवता देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा। शरण्यं शरणं देवं जग्मुर्विष्णुं महाबलम् ॥५-१०-५॥
evamukte maghavatā devāḥ sarṣigaṇāstadā। śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ devaṃ jagmurviṣṇuṃ mahābalam ॥5-10-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; मघवता (maghavatā) - by Maghavan (Indra); देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सः (saḥ) - with; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - the groups of sages; तदा (tadā) - then; शरण्यम् (śaraṇyam) - the refuge; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - shelter; देवम् (devam) - to the god; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - to Vishnu; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - the mighty one;]
(Thus having been spoken by Maghavan, the gods with the groups of sages then went to the refuge, the shelter, to the god Vishnu, the mighty one.)
Upon hearing these words from Maghavan, the gods along with the groups of sages sought refuge in the mighty Vishnu.
ऊचुश्च सर्वे देवेशं विष्णुं वृत्रभयार्दिताः। त्वया लोकास्त्रयः क्रान्तास्त्रिभिर्विक्रमणैः प्रभो ॥५-१०-६॥
ūcuśca sarve deveśaṃ viṣṇuṃ vṛtrabhayārditāḥ। tvayā lokāstrayaḥ krāntāstribhirvikramaṇaiḥ prabho ॥5-10-6॥
[ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवेशम् (deveśam) - lord of the gods; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Viṣṇu; वृत्र (vṛtra) - Vṛtra; भय (bhaya) - fear; आर्दिताः (ārditāḥ) - afflicted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; क्रान्ताः (krāntāḥ) - crossed; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; विक्रमणैः (vikramaṇaiḥ) - strides; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(And all said to Viṣṇu, the lord of the gods, afflicted by the fear of Vṛtra: "By you, the three worlds were crossed in three strides, O lord.")
All the gods, afflicted by the fear of Vṛtra, addressed Viṣṇu, the lord of the gods: "O lord, you traversed the three worlds in three strides."
अमृतं चाहृतं विष्णो दैत्याश्च निहता रणे। बलिं बद्ध्वा महादैत्यं शक्रो देवाधिपः कृतः ॥५-१०-७॥
amṛtaṃ cāhṛtaṃ viṣṇo daityāśca nihatā raṇe। baliṃ baddhvā mahādaityaṃ śakro devādhipaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥5-10-7॥
[अमृतं (amṛtam) - nectar; च (ca) - and; आहृतं (āhṛtam) - brought; विष्णो (viṣṇo) - by Vishnu; दैत्याः (daityāḥ) - demons; च (ca) - and; निहता (nihatā) - killed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; बलिं (baliṃ) - Bali; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; महादैत्यं (mahādaityaṃ) - the great demon; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; देवाधिपः (devādhipaḥ) - lord of the gods; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was made;]
(The nectar was brought by Vishnu, and the demons were killed in battle. Having bound Bali, the great demon, Indra was made the lord of the gods.)
Vishnu brought the nectar, and the demons were slain in battle. After binding the great demon Bali, Indra was established as the lord of the gods.
त्वं प्रभुः सर्वलोकानां त्वया सर्वमिदं ततम्। त्वं हि देव महादेवः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः ॥५-१०-८॥
tvaṁ prabhuḥ sarvalokānāṁ tvayā sarvamidaṁ tatam। tvaṁ hi deva mahādevaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ ॥5-10-8॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; सर्वलोकानां (sarvalokānāṁ) - of all worlds; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदं (idaṁ) - this; ततम् (tatam) - pervaded; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; देव (deva) - god; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - great god; सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः (sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ) - worshipped by all worlds;]
(You are the lord of all worlds; by you, all this is pervaded. You indeed are the god, the great god, worshipped by all worlds.)
You are the lord of all worlds, and everything here is pervaded by you. Indeed, you are the god, the great god, revered by all worlds.
गतिर्भव त्वं देवानां सेन्द्राणाममरोत्तम। जगद्व्याप्तमिदं सर्वं वृत्रेणासुरसूदन ॥५-१०-९॥
gatirbhava tvaṃ devānāṃ sendrāṇāmamarottama। jagadvyāptamidaṃ sarvaṃ vṛtreṇāsurasūdana ॥5-10-9॥
[गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; भव (bhava) - be; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; स-इन्द्राणाम् (sa-indrāṇām) - with Indra; अमरोत्तम (amarottama) - O best of the immortals; जगत्-व्याप्तम् (jagat-vyāptam) - pervaded by the universe; इदम् (idam) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; वृत्रेण (vṛtreṇa) - by Vritra; असुर-सूदन (asura-sūdana) - O slayer of the demons;]
(Be the refuge of the gods with Indra, O best of the immortals. This entire universe is pervaded by Vritra, O slayer of the demons.)
You are the refuge of the gods, including Indra, O supreme among the immortals. The entire universe is enveloped by Vritra, O destroyer of the demons.
विष्णुरुवाच॥

[विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Vishnu said:)
Vishnu said:
अवश्यं करणीयं मे भवतां हितमुत्तमम्। तस्मादुपायं वक्ष्यामि यथासौ न भविष्यति ॥५-१०-१०॥
avaśyaṃ karaṇīyaṃ me bhavatāṃ hitamuttamam। tasmādupāyaṃ vakṣyāmi yathāsau na bhaviṣyati ॥5-10-10॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; करणीयं (karaṇīyam) - to be done; मे (me) - my; भवतां (bhavatām) - your; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - best; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; उपायं (upāyam) - means; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will tell; यथा (yathā) - so that; असौ (asau) - he; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Certainly, the best welfare of yours is to be done by me. Therefore, I will tell the means so that he will not be.)
I must certainly do what is best for your welfare. Therefore, I will tell you the means by which he will not exist.
गच्छध्वं सर्षिगन्धर्वा यत्रासौ विश्वरूपधृक्। साम तस्य प्रयुञ्जध्वं तत एनं विजेष्यथ ॥५-१०-११॥
gacchadhvaṁ sarṣigandharvā yatrāsau viśvarūpadhṛk। sāma tasya prayuñjadhvaṁ tata enaṁ vijeṣyatha ॥5-10-11॥
[गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvaṁ) - go; सर्षिगन्धर्वा (sarṣigandharvā) - with sages and gandharvas; यत्र (yatra) - where; असौ (asau) - he; विश्व (viśva) - universal; रूप (rūpa) - form; धृक् (dhṛk) - bearing; साम (sāma) - song; तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रयुञ्जध्वं (prayuñjadhvaṁ) - apply; तत (tata) - then; एनं (enaṁ) - him; विजेष्यथ (vijeṣyatha) - you will conquer;]
(Go with sages and gandharvas to where he, the bearer of the universal form, is. Apply his song, then you will conquer him.)
Proceed with the sages and gandharvas to the place where he, who holds the universal form, resides. Use his song, and then you shall overcome him.
भविष्यति गतिर्देवाः शक्रस्य मम तेजसा। अदृश्यश्च प्रवेक्ष्यामि वज्रमस्यायुधोत्तमम् ॥५-१०-१२॥
bhaviṣyati gatirdevāḥ śakrasya mama tejasā। adṛśyaśca pravekṣyāmi vajramasyāyudhotamam ॥5-10-12॥
[भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Indra; मम (mama) - my; तेजसा (tejasā) - by power; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - invisible; च (ca) - and; प्रवेक्ष्यामि (pravekṣyāmi) - I will enter; वज्रम् (vajram) - thunderbolt; अस्य (asya) - of this; आयुधोत्तमम् (āyudhotamam) - best of weapons;]
(The movement of the gods will be by my power of Indra. I will enter invisibly into this best of weapons, the thunderbolt.)
The gods will move by the power of Indra, and I will invisibly enter this supreme weapon, the thunderbolt.
गच्छध्वमृषिभिः सार्धं गन्धर्वैश्च सुरोत्तमाः। वृत्रस्य सह शक्रेण सन्धिं कुरुत माचिरम् ॥५-१०-१३॥
gacchadhvamṛṣibhiḥ sārdhaṃ gandharvaiśca surottamāḥ। vṛtrasya saha śakreṇa sandhiṃ kuruta māciram ॥5-10-13॥
[गच्छध्वम् (gacchadhvam) - go; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - with sages; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - with celestial musicians; च (ca) - and; सुरोत्तमाः (surottamāḥ) - best of gods; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vritra; सह (saha) - with; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; सन्धिं (sandhiṃ) - peace; कुरुत (kuruta) - make; माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay;]
(Go with the sages, together with the celestial musicians and the best of gods; make peace with Vritra along with Indra without delay.)
Proceed with the sages, celestial musicians, and the best of gods to make peace with Vritra and Indra without delay.

एवमुक्तास्तु देवेन ऋषयस्त्रिदशास्तथा। ययुः समेत्य सहिताः शक्रं कृत्वा पुरःसरम् ॥५-१०-१४॥
evamuktāstu devena ṛṣayastridaśāstathā। yayuḥ sametya sahitāḥ śakraṃ kṛtvā puraḥsaram ॥5-10-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; देवेन (devena) - by the god; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - gods; तथा (tathā) - also; ययुः (yayuḥ) - went; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - making; पुरःसरम् (puraḥsaram) - leading;]
(Thus spoken by the god, the sages and the gods also went, having assembled together, making Indra the leader.)
Thus addressed by the god, the sages and the gods assembled together and went, with Indra leading them.
समीपमेत्य च तदा सर्व एव महौजसः। तं तेजसा प्रज्वलितं प्रतपन्तं दिशो दश ॥५-१०-१५॥
samīpam etya ca tadā sarva eva mahaujasaḥ। taṃ tejasā prajvalitaṃ pratapantaṃ diśo daśa ॥5-10-15॥
[समीपमेत्य (samīpam etya) - approaching; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - mighty; तं (taṃ) - him; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; प्रज्वलितं (prajvalitaṃ) - blazing; प्रतपन्तं (pratapantaṃ) - burning; दिशो (diśo) - directions; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(Approaching and then all indeed mighty, him with brilliance blazing burning directions ten.)
Then, all the mighty ones approached him, who was blazing with brilliance, burning in all ten directions.
ग्रसन्तमिव लोकांस्त्रीन्सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ यथा। ददृशुस्तत्र ते वृत्रं शक्रेण सह देवताः ॥५-१०-१६॥
grasantamiva lokāṃstrīnsūryācandramasau yathā। dadṛśustatra te vṛtraṃ śakreṇa saha devatāḥ ॥5-10-16॥
[ग्रसन्तम् (grasantam) - devouring; इव (iva) - as if; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; चन्द्रमसौ (candramasau) - moon; यथा (yathā) - as; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - they; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vritra; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together; देवताः (devatāḥ) - gods;]
(As if devouring the three worlds like the sun and moon, there they saw Vritra together with Indra, the gods.)
The gods saw Vritra there with Indra, as if he were devouring the three worlds like the sun and moon.
ऋषयोऽथ ततोऽभ्येत्य वृत्रमूचुः प्रियं वचः। व्याप्तं जगदिदं सर्वं तेजसा तव दुर्जय ॥५-१०-१७॥
ṛṣayo'tha tato'bhyetya vṛtramūcuḥ priyaṃ vacaḥ। vyāptaṃ jagadidaṃ sarvaṃ tejasā tava durjaya ॥5-10-17॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vritra; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - pleasing; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; व्याप्तम् (vyāptam) - pervaded; जगत् (jagat) - world; इदम् (idam) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance; तव (tava) - your; दुर्जय (durjaya) - invincible;]
(Then the sages, approaching Vritra, said pleasing words: "This entire world is pervaded by your invincible brilliance.")
Then the sages approached Vritra and spoke to him with kind words, acknowledging that his brilliance pervades the entire world and is invincible.
न च शक्नोषि निर्जेतुं वासवं भूरिविक्रमम्। युध्यतोश्चापि वां कालो व्यतीतः सुमहानिह ॥५-१०-१८॥
na ca śaknoṣi nirjetuṃ vāsavaṃ bhūrivikramam। yudhyatoścāpi vāṃ kālo vyatītaḥ sumhāniha ॥5-10-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शक्नोषि (śaknoṣi) - you are able; निर्जेतुं (nirjetuṃ) - to conquer; वासवं (vāsavam) - Indra; भूरिविक्रमम् (bhūrivikramam) - of great prowess; युध्यतोः (yudhyatoḥ) - fighting; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वाम् (vām) - your; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; व्यतीतः (vyatītaḥ) - has passed; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; इह (iha) - here;]
(And you are not able to conquer Indra of great prowess. Also, while fighting, your time has passed here very greatly.)
You are unable to defeat the mighty Indra. Moreover, a significant amount of time has passed here while you were engaged in battle.
पीड्यन्ते च प्रजाः सर्वाः सदेवासुरमानवाः। सख्यं भवतु ते वृत्र शक्रेण सह नित्यदा ॥ अवाप्स्यसि सुखं त्वं च शक्रलोकांश्च शाश्वतान् ॥५-१०-१९॥
pīḍyante ca prajāḥ sarvāḥ sadevāsuramānavāḥ। sakhyaṃ bhavatu te vṛtra śakreṇa saha nityadā ॥ avāpsyasi sukhaṃ tvaṃ ca śakralokāṃśca śāśvatān ॥5-10-19॥
[पीड्यन्ते (pīḍyante) - are oppressed; च (ca) - and; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सदेवासुरमानवाः (sadevāsuramānavāḥ) - with gods, demons, and humans; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; भवतु (bhavatu) - let there be; ते (te) - your; वृत्र (vṛtra) - Vritra; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - with Indra; सह (saha) - together; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; शक्रलोकान् (śakralokān) - Indra's worlds; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतान् (śāśvatān) - eternal;]
(All creatures, with gods, demons, and humans, are oppressed. Let there be friendship between you, Vritra, and Indra always. You will obtain happiness and the eternal worlds of Indra.)
All beings, including gods, demons, and humans, are suffering. May there always be friendship between you, Vritra, and Indra. You will gain happiness and the eternal realms of Indra.
ऋषिवाक्यं निशम्याथ स वृत्रः सुमहाबलः। उवाच तांस्तदा सर्वान्प्रणम्य शिरसासुरः ॥५-१०-२०॥
ṛṣivākyaṃ niśamyātha sa vṛtraḥ sumahābalaḥ। uvāca tāṃstadā sarvānpraṇamya śirasāsuraḥ ॥5-10-20॥
[ऋषिवाक्यं (ṛṣivākyaṃ) - sage's words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; वृत्रः (vṛtraḥ) - Vritra; सुमहाबलः (sumahābalaḥ) - very mighty; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तान् (tān) - to them; तदा (tadā) - then; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with head; असुरः (asuraḥ) - demon;]
(Having heard the sage's words, then Vritra, the very mighty, said to them all, having bowed with his head, the demon.)
Upon hearing the sage's words, the mighty Vritra respectfully bowed his head and addressed them all.
सर्वे यूयं महाभागा गन्धर्वाश्चैव सर्वशः। यद्ब्रूत तच्छ्रुतं सर्वं ममापि शृणुतानघाः ॥५-१०-२१॥

(All you fortunate ones and Gandharvas entirely, what you say, that all heard, also listen to my words, O sinless ones.)

सन्धिः कथं वै भविता मम शक्रस्य चोभयोः। तेजसोर्हि द्वयोर्देवाः सख्यं वै भविता कथम् ॥५-१०-२२॥

(How indeed will there be a union of my and Śakra's energies? How indeed will there be friendship of the two gods?)

सकृत्सतां सङ्गतं लिप्सितव्यं; ततः परं भविता भव्यमेव। नातिक्रमेत्सत्पुरुषेण सङ्गतं; तस्मात्सतां सङ्गतं लिप्सितव्यम् ॥५-१०-२३॥
sakṛtsatāṃ saṅgataṃ lipsitavyaṃ; tataḥ paraṃ bhavitā bhavyameva। nātikrametsatpuruṣeṇa saṅgataṃ; tasmātsatāṃ saṅgataṃ lipsitavyam ॥5-10-23॥
[सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; सतां (satāṃ) - of the good; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - association; लिप्सितव्यम् (lipsitavyam) - should be desired; ततः (tataḥ) - then; परम् (param) - beyond; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; भव्यम् (bhavyam) - auspicious; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; अतिक्रमेत् (atikramet) - should transgress; सत्पुरुषेण (satpuruṣeṇa) - by a good person; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - association; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सतां (satāṃ) - of the good; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - association; लिप्सितव्यम् (lipsitavyam) - should be desired;]
(Once, the association of the good should be desired; then, beyond that, it will indeed be auspicious. A good person should not transgress the association; therefore, the association of the good should be desired.)
The company of the virtuous should be sought after at least once; thereafter, it will lead to auspiciousness. A noble person should not disregard such association; hence, the company of the virtuous is to be desired.
दृढं सतां सङ्गतं चापि नित्यं; ब्रूयाच्चार्थं ह्यर्थकृच्छ्रेषु धीरः। महार्थवत्सत्पुरुषेण सङ्गतं; तस्मात्सन्तं न जिघांसेत धीरः ॥५-१०-२४॥

(Firmly, the association of the good also always; should speak meaning indeed in difficulties, the wise one. Of great meaning, association with a good person; therefore, a wise one should not harm a good person.)

इन्द्रः सतां संमतश्च निवासश्च महात्मनाम्। सत्यवादी ह्यदीनश्च धर्मवित्सुविनिश्चितः ॥५-१०-२५॥

ब्रवीमि यदहं देवास्तत्सर्वं क्रियतामिह। ततः सर्वं करिष्यामि यदूचुर्मां द्विजर्षभाः ॥५-१०-२८॥

(I say, whatever I, the gods, here, let all that be done. Then I will do all that the best of the twice-born said to me.)

(Not by dry, not by wet, not by stone, not by wood, not by weapon, not by thunderbolt, not by day, not thus by night.)
It cannot be destroyed by dry or wet means, nor by stone or wood, nor by weapon or thunderbolt, neither by day nor by night.
वध्यो भवेयं विप्रेन्द्राः शक्रस्य सह दैवतैः। एवं मे रोचते सन्धिः शक्रेण सह नित्यदा ॥५-१०-३०॥
vadhyo bhaveyaṃ viprendrāḥ śakrasya saha daivataiḥ। evaṃ me rocate sandhiḥ śakreṇa saha nityadā ॥5-10-30॥

(I may become one to be killed, O best of the Brahmins, with Indra and the gods. Thus, my alliance with Indra always pleases me.)

(The sages said to him, 'Certainly, O best of the Bharatas.' When the agreement was thus made, Vritra became very pleased.)

(Then, having considered the boon of the great soul, this fierce twilight prevails, neither night nor day. Vritra, my all-destroying enemy, must be killed.)

(If I do not slay Vritra today, deceiving the great demon of great strength and great body, my welfare will not be.)

एवं सञ्चिन्तयन्नेव शक्रो विष्णुमनुस्मरन्। अथ फेनं तदापश्यत्समुद्रे पर्वतोपमम् ॥५-१०-३६॥
evaṃ sañcintayanneva śakro viṣṇumanusmaran। atha phenaṃ tadāpaśyatsamudre parvatopamam ॥5-10-36॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; सञ्चिन्तयन् (sañcintayan) - thinking; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; विष्णुम् (viṣṇum) - Vishnu; अनुस्मरन् (anusmaran) - remembering; अथ (atha) - then; फेनम् (phenam) - foam; तदा (tadā) - at that time; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; पर्वत-उपमम् (parvata-upamam) - mountain-like;]
(Thus, indeed, while thinking, Indra, remembering Vishnu, then saw foam in the ocean, mountain-like at that time.)

[सवज्रम् (savajram) - with thunderbolt; अथ (atha) - then; फेनम् (phenam) - foam; तम् (tam) - that; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; वृत्रे (vṛtre) - at Vritra; निसृष्टवान् (nisṛṣṭavān) - dispatched; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - entering; फेनम् (phenam) - foam; तम् (tam) - that; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; अथ (atha) - then; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vritra; व्यानाशयत् (vyanāśayat) - destroyed;]
(Then, with the thunderbolt, he quickly dispatched that foam at Vritra. Entering that foam, Vishnu then destroyed Vritra.)

(But when Vritra was slain, the directions became free from darkness. The auspicious wind blew, and the beings rejoiced then.)
