क्रुद्धं तु नहुषं ज्ञात्वा देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः। अब्रुवन्देवराजानं नहुषं घोरदर्शनम् ॥५-१२-१॥
kruddhaṃ tu nahuṣaṃ jñātvā devāḥ sarṣipurogamāḥ। abruvandevarājānaṃ nahuṣaṃ ghoradarśanam ॥5-12-1॥
[क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) - angry; तु (tu) - but; नहुषम् (nahuṣam) - Nahusha; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; स-ऋषि-पुरोगमाः (sa-ṛṣi-purogamāḥ) - with sages at the forefront; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; देव-राजानम् (deva-rājānam) - to the king of gods; नहुषम् (nahuṣam) - Nahusha; घोर-दर्शनम् (ghora-darśanam) - terrible to behold;]
(But knowing Nahusha to be angry, the gods with sages at the forefront said to the king of gods, Nahusha, who was terrible to behold.)
The gods, along with the leading sages, realized that Nahusha was angry. They approached Nahusha, the king of gods, who appeared terrifying, to address the situation.
देवराज जहि क्रोधं त्वयि क्रुद्धे जगद्विभो। त्रस्तं सासुरगन्धर्वं सकिंनरमहोरगम् ॥५-१२-२॥
devarāja jahi krodhaṃ tvayi kruddhe jagadvibho। trastaṃ sāsuragandharvaṃ sakiṃnaramahoragam ॥5-12-2॥
[देवराज (devarāja) - O king of the gods; जहि (jahi) - abandon; क्रोधं (krodhaṃ) - anger; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; क्रुद्धे (kruddhe) - when angry; जगद्विभो (jagadvibho) - O lord of the universe; त्रस्तं (trastaṃ) - frightened; सासुरगन्धर्वं (sāsuragandharvaṃ) - with demons and celestial musicians; सकिंनरमहोरगम् (sakiṃnaramahoragam) - with kinnaras and great serpents;]
(O king of the gods, abandon anger; when you are angry, O lord of the universe, the world is frightened with demons, celestial musicians, kinnaras, and great serpents.)
O king of the gods, let go of your anger. When you are angry, O lord of the universe, the entire world, along with demons, celestial musicians, kinnaras, and great serpents, becomes terrified.
जहि क्रोधमिमं साधो न क्रुध्यन्ति भवद्विधाः। परस्य पत्नी सा देवी प्रसीदस्व सुरेश्वर ॥५-१२-३॥

निवर्तय मनः पापात्परदाराभिमर्शनात्। देवराजोऽसि भद्रं ते प्रजा धर्मेण पालय ॥५-१२-४॥
nivartaya manaḥ pāpāt paradārābhimarśanāt। devarājo'si bhadraṃ te prajā dharmeṇa pālaya ॥5-12-4॥
[निवर्तय (nivartaya) - turn back; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; पापात् (pāpāt) - from sin; परदाराभिमर्शनात् (paradārābhimarśanāt) - from touching another's wife; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - O king of gods; असि (asi) - you are; भद्रम् (bhadram) - welfare; ते (te) - your; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; पालय (pālaya) - protect;]
(Turn back the mind from sin, from touching another's wife. O king of gods, may there be welfare for you, protect your subjects with righteousness.)
Turn your mind away from sinful acts, especially from coveting another's wife. As the king of gods, ensure the welfare of your subjects by ruling with righteousness.
एवमुक्तो न जग्राह तद्वचः काममोहितः। अथ देवानुवाचेदमिन्द्रं प्रति सुराधिपः ॥५-१२-५॥
evamukto na jagrāha tadvacaḥ kāmamohitaḥ। atha devānuvācedamindraṃ prati surādhipaḥ ॥5-12-5॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; न (na) - not; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; काम (kāma) - desire; मोहितः (mohitaḥ) - deluded; अथ (atha) - then; देवान् (devān) - to the gods; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; इन्द्रं (indraṃ) - Indra; प्रति (prati) - towards; सुर (sura) - gods; अधिपः (adhipaḥ) - lord;]
(Thus spoken, he did not accept those words, deluded by desire. Then the lord of the gods said this to Indra.)
Despite being told thus, he did not heed those words, being deluded by desire. Then, the lord of the gods addressed Indra.
अहल्या धर्षिता पूर्वमृषिपत्नी यशस्विनी। जीवतो भर्तुरिन्द्रेण स वः किं न निवारितः ॥५-१२-६॥

(Ahalya, the renowned sage's wife, was violated by Indra while her husband was living. Why was he not prevented by you?)
Ahalya, the illustrious wife of the sage, was dishonored by Indra while her husband was still alive. Why did you not prevent this?
बहूनि च नृशंसानि कृतानीन्द्रेण वै पुरा। वैधर्म्याण्युपधाश्चैव स वः किं न निवारितः ॥५-१२-७॥
bahūni ca nṛśaṁsāni kṛtānīndreṇa vai purā। vaidharmyāṇyupadhāścaiva sa vaḥ kiṁ na nivāritaḥ ॥5-12-7॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; च (ca) - and; नृशंसानि (nṛśaṁsāni) - cruel deeds; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - done; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वैधर्म्याणि (vaidharmyāṇi) - unrighteous acts; उपधाः (upadhāḥ) - deceptions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; सः (saḥ) - he; वः (vaḥ) - to you; किं (kiṁ) - why; न (na) - not; निवारितः (nivāritaḥ) - prevented;]
(Many cruel deeds were indeed done by Indra formerly, and also unrighteous acts and deceptions. Why was he not prevented by you?)
In the past, Indra committed many cruel and unrighteous acts, including deceptions. Why did you not prevent him?
उपतिष्ठतु मां देवी एतदस्या हितं परम्। युष्माकं च सदा देवाः शिवमेवं भविष्यति ॥५-१२-८॥
upatiṣṭhatu māṃ devī etadasyā hitaṃ param। yuṣmākaṃ ca sadā devāḥ śivamevaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥5-12-8॥
[उपतिष्ठतु (upatiṣṭhatu) - may attend; मां (māṃ) - me; देवी (devī) - goddess; एतदस्या (etadasyā) - this her; हितं (hitaṃ) - welfare; परम् (param) - supreme; युष्माकं (yuṣmākaṃ) - your; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(May the goddess attend to me; this is her supreme welfare. Your gods will always be auspicious thus.)

इन्द्राणीमानयिष्यामो यथेच्छसि दिवस्पते। जहि क्रोधमिमं वीर प्रीतो भव सुरेश्वर ॥५-१२-९॥
indrāṇīmānayiṣyāmo yathecchasi divaspate। jahi krodhamimaṃ vīra prīto bhava sureśvara ॥5-12-9॥

(We will bring Indrani as you wish, O lord of the day. Abandon this anger, hero, be pleased, O lord of gods.)

इत्युक्त्वा ते तदा देवा ऋषिभिः सह भारत। जग्मुर्बृहस्पतिं वक्तुमिन्द्राणीं चाशुभं वचः ॥५-१२-१०॥
ityuktvā te tadā devā ṛṣibhiḥ saha bhārata। jagmur bṛhaspatiṃ vaktum indrāṇīṃ cāśubhaṃ vacaḥ ॥5-12-10॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ते (te) - they; तदा (tadā) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - with sages; सह (saha) - together; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - to Bṛhaspati; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; इन्द्राणीम् (indrāṇīm) - to Indrāṇī; च (ca) - and; अशुभम् (aśubham) - inauspicious; वचः (vacaḥ) - words;]
(Thus having spoken, they, the gods, together with the sages, then went to Bṛhaspati and Indrāṇī to speak inauspicious words, O Bhārata.)
After speaking thus, the gods, along with the sages, went to Bṛhaspati and Indrāṇī to convey the inauspicious words, O Bhārata.
जानीमः शरणं प्राप्तमिन्द्राणीं तव वेश्मनि। दत्ताभयां च विप्रेन्द्र त्वया देवर्षिसत्तम ॥५-१२-११॥
jānīmaḥ śaraṇaṃ prāptam indrāṇīṃ tava veśmani। dattābhayāṃ ca viprendra tvayā devarṣisattama ॥5-12-11॥
[जानीमः (jānīmaḥ) - we know; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - attained; इन्द्राणीं (indrāṇīm) - Indrani; तव (tava) - your; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in the house; दत्ताभयां (dattābhayām) - given fearlessness; च (ca) - and; विप्रेन्द्र (viprendra) - O best of the sages; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; देवर्षिसत्तम (devarṣisattama) - O best of divine sages;]
(We know that Indrani, who has attained refuge in your house, has been given fearlessness by you, O best of the sages, O best of divine sages.)
We acknowledge that Indrani, having sought refuge in your abode, has been assured safety by you, O eminent sage and foremost among divine sages.
ते त्वां देवाः सगन्धर्वा ऋषयश्च महाद्युते। प्रसादयन्ति चेन्द्राणी नहुषाय प्रदीयताम् ॥५-१२-१२॥
te tvāṃ devāḥ sagandharvā ṛṣayaśca mahādyute। prasādayanti cendrāṇī nahuṣāya pradīyatām ॥5-12-12॥
[ते (te) - they; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सगन्धर्वा (sagandharvā) - with Gandharvas; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O great lustrous one; प्रसादयन्ति (prasādayanti) - are propitiating; च (ca) - and; इन्द्राणी (indrāṇī) - Indrani; नहुषाय (nahuṣāya) - to Nahusha; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - be given;]
(They, the gods along with the Gandharvas and sages, O great lustrous one, are propitiating you, and Indrani should be given to Nahusha.)

इन्द्राद्विशिष्टो नहुषो देवराजो महाद्युतिः। वृणोत्वियं वरारोहा भर्तृत्वे वरवर्णिनी ॥५-१२-१३॥
indrādviśiṣṭo nahuṣo devarājo mahādyutiḥ। vṛṇotviyam varārohā bhartṛtve varavarṇinī ॥5-12-13॥
[इन्द्रात् (indrāt) - than Indra; विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - superior; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahusha; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of gods; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor; वृणोतु (vṛṇotu) - may choose; इयम् (iyam) - this; वरारोहा (varārohā) - beautiful lady; भर्तृत्वे (bhartṛtve) - as husband; वरवर्णिनी (varavarṇinī) - of excellent complexion;]
(Nahusha, superior to Indra, the king of gods, of great splendor, may this beautiful lady choose as husband, of excellent complexion.)

एवमुक्ते तु सा देवी बाष्पमुत्सृज्य सस्वरम्। उवाच रुदती दीना बृहस्पतिमिदं वचः ॥५-१२-१४॥
evamukte tu sā devī bāṣpamutsṛjya sasvaram। uvāca rudatī dīnā bṛhaspatimidaṃ vacaḥ ॥5-12-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - she; देवी (devī) - goddess; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - releasing; सस्वरम् (sasvaram) - with sound; उवाच (uvāca) - said; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; दीना (dīnā) - miserable; बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - to Brihaspati; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Thus, having been spoken, she, the goddess, releasing tears with sound, said weeping and miserable, this speech to Brihaspati.)
After being addressed in this way, the goddess, shedding tears audibly, spoke these words to Brihaspati while weeping and feeling wretched.
नाहमिच्छामि नहुषं पतिमन्वास्य तं प्रभुम्। शरणागतास्मि ते ब्रह्मंस्त्राहि मां महतो भयात् ॥५-१२-१५॥
nāhamicchāmi nahuṣaṃ patimanvāsy taṃ prabhum। śaraṇāgatāsmi te brahmaṃstrāhi māṃ mahato bhayāt ॥5-12-15॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - wish; नहुषम् (nahuṣam) - Nahusha; पतिम् (patim) - husband; अन्वास्य (anvāsy) - having followed; तम् (tam) - that; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord; शरणागतास्मि (śaraṇāgatāsmi) - I have sought refuge; ते (te) - your; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; त्राहि (trāhi) - protect; माम् (mām) - me; महतः (mahataḥ) - from great; भयात् (bhayāt) - fear;]
(I do not wish for Nahusha as a husband, having followed that lord. I have sought refuge in you, O Brahman; protect me from great fear.)

बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥

Bṛhaspati spoke:
शरणागतां न त्यजेयमिन्द्राणि मम निश्चितम्। धर्मज्ञां धर्मशीलां च न त्यजे त्वामनिन्दिते ॥५-१२-१६॥
śaraṇāgatāṃ na tyajeyam indrāṇi mama niścitam। dharmajñāṃ dharmaśīlāṃ ca na tyaje tvām anindite ॥5-12-16॥
[शरणागताम् (śaraṇāgatām) - one who has sought refuge; न (na) - not; त्यजेयम् (tyajeyam) - I would abandon; इन्द्राणि (indrāṇi) - O Indrani; मम (mama) - my; निश्चितम् (niścitām) - certain; धर्मज्ञाम् (dharmajñām) - knower of dharma; धर्मशीलाम् (dharmaśīlām) - virtuous; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; त्यजे (tyaje) - I abandon; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनिन्दिते (anindite) - O blameless one;]
(I would not abandon one who has sought refuge, O Indrani, this is certain for me. I do not abandon you, O blameless one, who is a knower of dharma and virtuous.)
I am certain, O Indrani, that I would never abandon someone who has sought my refuge. I will not abandon you, O blameless one, who is knowledgeable in dharma and virtuous.
नाकार्यं कर्तुमिच्छामि ब्राह्मणः सन्विशेषतः। श्रुतधर्मा सत्यशीलो जानन्धर्मानुशासनम् ॥५-१२-१७॥
nākāryaṃ kartumicchāmi brāhmaṇaḥ sanviśeṣataḥ। śrutadharmā satyaśīlo jānan dharmānuśāsanam ॥5-12-17॥
[न (na) - not; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brahmin; सन् (san) - being; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; श्रुतधर्मा (śrutadharmā) - one who has heard the law; सत्यशीलः (satyaśīlaḥ) - truthful by nature; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; धर्मानुशासनम् (dharmānuśāsanam) - the instruction of the law;]
(I do not wish to perform an action, being a Brahmin, especially one who has heard the law, is truthful by nature, and knows the instruction of the law.)
As a Brahmin, I particularly refrain from undertaking actions, being aware of the teachings of the law, truthful in character, and knowledgeable about the instructions of the law.
नाहमेतत्करिष्यामि गच्छध्वं वै सुरोत्तमाः। अस्मिंश्चार्थे पुरा गीतं ब्रह्मणा श्रूयतामिदम् ॥५-१२-१८॥
nāhametatkariṣyāmi gacchadhvaṃ vai surottamāḥ। asmiṃścārthe purā gītaṃ brahmaṇā śrūyatāmidam ॥5-12-18॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - will do; गच्छध्वं (gacchadhvam) - go; वै (vai) - indeed; सुरोत्तमाः (surottamāḥ) - O best of gods; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; च (ca) - and; अर्थे (arthe) - matter; पुरा (purā) - formerly; गीतं (gītam) - sung; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahma; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(I will not do this. Go, indeed, O best of gods. In this matter, formerly sung by Brahma, let this be heard.)

न तस्य बीजं रोहति बीजकाले; न चास्य वर्षं वर्षति वर्षकाले। भीतं प्रपन्नं प्रददाति शत्रवे; न सोऽन्तरं लभते त्राणमिच्छन् ॥५-१२-१९॥
na tasya bījaṃ rohati bījakāle; na cāsya varṣaṃ varṣati varṣakāle। bhītaṃ prapannaṃ pradadāti śatrave; na so'ntaraṃ labhate trāṇamicchan ॥5-12-19॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; बीजं (bījaṃ) - seed; रोहति (rohati) - grows; बीजकाले (bījakāle) - at the time of sowing; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; वर्षं (varṣaṃ) - rain; वर्षति (varṣati) - falls; वर्षकाले (varṣakāle) - at the time of rain; भीतं (bhītam) - frightened; प्रपन्नं (prapannaṃ) - surrendered; प्रददाति (pradadāti) - gives; शत्रवे (śatrave) - to the enemy; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तरं (antaraṃ) - gap; लभते (labhate) - finds; त्राणम् (trāṇam) - protection; इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring;]
(His seed does not grow at the time of sowing; nor does his rain fall at the time of rain. He gives to the enemy who is frightened and surrendered; he does not find a gap desiring protection.)
His efforts do not bear fruit at the right time, nor does he receive help when needed. He aids his enemies when they are vulnerable, but finds no refuge when he seeks protection.
मोघमन्नं विन्दति चाप्यचेताः; स्वर्गाल्लोकाद्भ्रश्यति नष्टचेष्टः। भीतं प्रपन्नं प्रददाति यो वै; न तस्य हव्यं प्रतिगृह्णन्ति देवाः ॥५-१२-२०॥
moghama annaṃ vindati cāpy acetāḥ; svargāl lokād bhraśyati naṣṭaceṣṭaḥ। bhītaṃ prapannaṃ pradadāti yo vai; na tasya havyaṃ pratigṛhṇanti devāḥ ॥5-12-20॥
[मोघम् (mogham) - in vain; अन्नम् (annam) - food; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अचेताः (acetāḥ) - foolish; स्वर्गात् (svargāt) - from heaven; लोकात् (lokāt) - from the world; भ्रश्यति (bhraśyati) - falls; नष्टचेष्टः (naṣṭaceṣṭaḥ) - one who has lost effort; भीतम् (bhītam) - frightened; प्रपन्नम् (prapannam) - surrendered; प्रददाति (pradadāti) - gives; यः (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - his; हव्यम् (havyam) - offering; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - accept; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods;]
(The foolish one finds food in vain; he falls from the heavenly world, having lost effort. The gods do not accept the offering of one who indeed gives to the frightened and surrendered.)
The foolish person who gives to those who are frightened and have surrendered finds his food in vain and falls from the heavenly world, as the gods do not accept his offering.

(Knowing thus indeed, I will not give this Śacī, the famous Indrāṇī in the world, the beloved queen of Śakra.)

(What would be beneficial for her and also beneficial for me, let that be done, O best of gods, for I will not give Śacī.)

(Then the gods said to him, the best of the Angirasa teachers, "O Brihaspati, advise how it may be well-guided.")
Then the gods addressed Brihaspati, the foremost among the Angirasa sages, asking him to provide guidance on how things could be properly directed.

(The auspicious goddess, requesting Nahusha, for some time, indeed, this welfare of Indrani, thus, will be ours.)

बहुविघ्नकरः कालः कालः कालं नयिष्यति। दर्पितो बलवांश्चापि नहुषो वरसंश्रयात् ॥५-१२-२६॥

(Then, when thus spoken by him, the pleased gods said to him: "O Brahman, well spoken by you, this is beneficial for all the inhabitants of heaven." Thus, O best of the twice-born, this goddess should be pleased.)
Then, when he spoke thus, the gods, being pleased, said to him: "O Brahman, what you have spoken is well said and beneficial for all the inhabitants of heaven." Therefore, O best of the twice-born, this goddess should be propitiated.

tataḥ samastā indrāṇīṃ devāḥ sāgnipurogamāḥ। ūcurvacanamavyagrā lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā ॥5-12-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समस्ता (samastā) - all; इन्द्राणीं (indrāṇīṃ) - Indra's wife; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; साग्निपुरोगमाः (sāgnipurogamāḥ) - with Agni at the forefront; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अव्यग्रा (avyagrā) - calmly; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - for the welfare;]
(Then all the gods, with Agni at the forefront, calmly said words to Indra's wife for the welfare of the worlds.)

त्वया जगदिदं सर्वं धृतं स्थावरजङ्गमम्। एकपत्न्यसि सत्या च गच्छस्व नहुषं प्रति ॥५-१२-२९॥
tvayā jagadidaṃ sarvaṃ dhṛtaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam। ekapatnyasi satyā ca gacchasva nahuṣaṃ prati ॥5-12-29॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; जगत् (jagat) - world; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; धृतं (dhṛtaṃ) - held; स्थावर (sthāvara) - immovable; जङ्गमम् (jaṅgamam) - movable; एक (eka) - one; पत्नी (patnī) - wife; असि (asi) - you are; सत्या (satyā) - truthful; च (ca) - and; गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go; नहुषं (nahuṣaṃ) - to Nahusha; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(By you, this entire world, both movable and immovable, is held. You are a truthful and singular wife. Go towards Nahusha.)

[क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिकामः (abhikāmaḥ) - desiring; च (ca) - and; विनशिष्यति (vinaśiṣyati) - will perish; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; देवि (devi) - O goddess; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; च (ca) - and; सुरैश्वर्यम् (suraiśvaryam) - lordship of the gods; अवाप्स्यति (avāpsyati) - will attain;]
(Quickly, the king desiring you will perish, O goddess. Nahuṣa and Indra will attain the lordship of the gods.)

[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विनिश्चयं (viniścayam) - decision; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; इन्द्राणी (indrāṇī) - Indrani; कार्यसिद्धये (kāryasiddhaye) - for the accomplishment of the task; अभ्यगच्छत (abhyagacchat) - approached; सव्रीडा (savrīḍā) - bashfully; नहुषं (nahuṣam) - Nahusha; घोरदर्शनम् (ghoradarśanam) - terrifying in appearance;]
(Thus, having made a decision, Indrani, for the accomplishment of the task, approached Nahusha, who was terrifying in appearance, bashfully.)

[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; तां (tāṃ) - her; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahusha; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वयः (vayaḥ) - age; रूप (rūpa) - beauty; समन्विताम् (samanvitām) - endowed with; समहृष्यत (samahṛṣyata) - rejoiced; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked soul; कामोपहत (kāmopahata) - overcome by desire; चेतनः (cetanaḥ) - consciousness;]
(Seeing her endowed with age and beauty, Nahusha, with a wicked soul and consciousness overcome by desire, rejoiced.)
Upon seeing her, who was endowed with both youth and beauty, Nahusha, whose mind was corrupted by desire, felt a wicked joy.
