अथ तामब्रवीद्दृष्ट्वा नहुषो देवराट्तदा। त्रयाणामपि लोकानामहमिन्द्रः शुचिस्मिते ॥ भजस्व मां वरारोहे पतित्वे वरवर्णिनि ॥५-१३-१॥
atha tāmabravīddṛṣṭvā nahuṣo devarāṭtadā। trayāṇāmapi lokānāmahamaindraḥ śucismite ॥ bhajasva māṃ varārohe patitve varavarṇini ॥5-13-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; देवराट् (devarāṭ) - king of gods; तदा (tadā) - then; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - also; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - worlds; अहम् (aham) - I; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiled one; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; माम् (mām) - me; वरारोहे (varārohe) - O beautiful one; पतित्वे (patitve) - in marriage; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O lady of excellent complexion;]
(Then Nahuṣa, the king of gods, having seen her, said: "O pure-smiled one, I am Indra of the three worlds. O beautiful one, accept me in marriage, O lady of excellent complexion.")
Then Nahuṣa, the king of gods, upon seeing her, declared: "O pure-smiled one, I am the Indra of all three worlds. O beautiful lady, accept me as your husband, O lady of excellent complexion."
एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी नहुषेण पतिव्रता। प्रावेपत भयोद्विग्ना प्रवाते कदली यथा ॥५-१३-२॥

नमस्य सा तु ब्रह्माणं कृत्वा शिरसि चाञ्जलिम्। देवराजमथोवाच नहुषं घोरदर्शनम् ॥५-१३-३॥

(Having saluted, she made a gesture with folded hands on her head and then spoke to Nahusha, the king of gods, who was of terrible appearance.)
She respectfully saluted Brahma, made a gesture of reverence with folded hands on her head, and then addressed Nahusha, the king of gods, who appeared terrifying.
कालमिच्छाम्यहं लब्धुं किञ्चित्त्वत्तः सुरेश्वर। न हि विज्ञायते शक्रः प्राप्तः किं वा क्व वा गतः ॥५-१३-४॥
kālam icchāmy ahaṃ labdhuṃ kiñcit tvattaḥ sureśvaraḥ। na hi vijñāyate śakraḥ prāptaḥ kiṃ vā kva vā gataḥ ॥5-13-4॥
[कालम् (kālam) - time; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहम् (aham) - I; लब्धुम् (labdhum) - to obtain; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; सुरेश्वर (sureśvara) - O lord of gods; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; विज्ञायते (vijñāyate) - is known; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has arrived; किम् (kim) - what; वा (vā) - or; क्व (kva) - where; वा (vā) - or; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(I wish to obtain some time from you, O lord of gods. Indeed, it is not known whether Śakra has arrived, or what or where he has gone.)
I seek to gain some time from you, O lord of gods, as it is unclear whether Śakra has arrived or where he might have gone.
तत्त्वमेतत्तु विज्ञाय यदि न ज्ञायते प्रभो। ततोऽहं त्वामुपस्थास्ये सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ एवमुक्तः स इन्द्राण्या नहुषः प्रीतिमानभूत् ॥५-१३-५॥
tattvam etat tu vijñāya yadi na jñāyate prabho। tato'ham tvām upasthāsye satyam etad bravīmi te॥ evam uktaḥ sa indrāṇyā nahuṣaḥ prītimān abhūt॥5-13-5॥

(Having known this truth, if it is not known, O lord, then I will approach you. Truly, I say this to you. Thus spoken by Indrani, Nahusha became pleased.)
O lord, if this truth is not known after knowing it, then I will indeed approach you. I truly say this to you. Hearing these words from Indrani, Nahusha was pleased.

एवं भवतु सुश्रोणि यथा मामभिभाषसे। ज्ञात्वा चागमनं कार्यं सत्यमेतदनुस्मरेः ॥५-१३-६॥
evaṃ bhavatu suśroṇi yathā māmabhibhāṣase। jñātvā cāgamanaṃ kāryaṃ satyametadanusmareḥ ॥5-13-6॥

नहुषेण विसृष्टा च निश्चक्राम ततः शुभा। बृहस्पतिनिकेतं सा जगाम च तपस्विनी ॥५-१३-७॥

(Having heard her words, the gods, led by Agni, deliberated with concentration for Indra, O best of kings.)
Upon hearing her words, the gods, with Agni at the forefront, gathered with focused minds to deliberate on behalf of Indra, O noble king.
देवदेवेन सङ्गम्य विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना। ऊचुश्चैनं समुद्विग्ना वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदाः ॥५-१३-९॥
devadevena saṅgamya viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā। ūcuś cainaṃ samudvignā vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradāḥ ॥5-13-9॥

(Having met with the god of gods, Vishnu, the mighty one, they, distressed, said these words to him, experts in speech.)
The experts in speech, having met with the mighty Vishnu, the god of gods, spoke to him in distress.
ब्रह्महत्याभिभूतो वै शक्रः सुरगणेश्वरः। गतिश्च नस्त्वं देवेश पूर्वजो जगतः प्रभुः ॥ रक्षार्थं सर्वभूतानां विष्णुत्वमुपजग्मिवान् ॥५-१३-१०॥
brahmahatyābhibhūto vai śakraḥ suragaṇeśvaraḥ। gatiśca nastvaṃ deveśa pūrvajo jagataḥ prabhuḥ ॥ rakṣārthaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viṣṇutvamupajagmivān ॥5-13-10॥
[ब्रह्महत्या (brahmahatyā) - Brahma's murder; अभिभूतः (abhibhūtaḥ) - overcome; वै (vai) - indeed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; सुरगणेश्वरः (suragaṇeśvaraḥ) - lord of the gods; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; देवेश (deveśa) - lord of the gods; पूर्वजः (pūrvajaḥ) - elder; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; रक्षार्थं (rakṣārthaṃ) - for the protection; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; विष्णुत्वम् (viṣṇutvam) - the state of being Vishnu; उपजग्मिवान् (upajagmivān) - assumed.;]
(Indra, the lord of the gods, indeed overcome by Brahma's murder, you are our refuge, O lord of the gods, elder and lord of the world. For the protection of all beings, you assumed the state of being Vishnu.)
Indra, the lord of the gods, was indeed overcome by the sin of killing a Brahmin. You, O lord of the gods and elder of the world, are our refuge. To protect all beings, you took on the form of Vishnu.
त्वद्वीर्यान्निहते वृत्रे वासवो ब्रह्महत्यया। वृतः सुरगणश्रेष्ठ मोक्षं तस्य विनिर्दिश ॥५-१३-११॥
tvadvīryānnihate vṛtre vāsavo brahmahatyayā। vṛtaḥ suragaṇaśreṣṭha mokṣaṃ tasya vinirdiśa ॥5-13-11॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - your; वीर्यात् (vīryāt) - by the power; निहते (nihate) - slain; वृत्रे (vṛtre) - Vritra; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; ब्रह्महत्यया (brahmahatyayā) - by the sin of killing a Brahmin; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - afflicted; सुरगणश्रेष्ठ (suragaṇaśreṣṭha) - O best of the celestial hosts; मोक्षं (mokṣaṃ) - liberation; तस्य (tasya) - his; विनिर्दिश (vinirdiśa) - direct;]
(O best of the celestial hosts, Indra, afflicted by the sin of killing a Brahmin, after Vritra was slain by your power, direct his liberation.)

तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा देवानां विष्णुरब्रवीत्। मामेव यजतां शक्रः पावयिष्यामि वज्रिणम् ॥५-१३-१२॥
teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā devānāṃ viṣṇurabravīt। māmeva yajatāṃ śakraḥ pāvayiṣyāmi vajriṇam ॥5-13-12॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; तद्वचनं (tadvacanam) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; देवानां (devānām) - of the gods; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Vishnu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; यजतां (yajatām) - let worship; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; पावयिष्यामि (pāvayiṣyāmi) - I will purify; वज्रिणम् (vajriṇam) - the wielder of the thunderbolt;]
(Having heard those words of the gods, Vishnu said: "Let Indra worship me only; I will purify the wielder of the thunderbolt.")

पुण्येन हयमेधेन मामिष्ट्वा पाकशासनः। पुनरेष्यति देवानामिन्द्रत्वमकुतोभयः ॥५-१३-१३॥
puṇyena hayamedhena māmiṣṭvā pākaśāsanaḥ। punareṣyati devānāmindratvamakutobhayaḥ ॥5-13-13॥
[पुण्येन (puṇyena) - by virtue; हयमेधेन (hayamedhena) - by horse-sacrifice; माम् (mām) - me; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having worshipped; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will attain; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; इन्द्रत्वम् (indratvam) - the position of Indra; अकुतोभयः (akutobhayaḥ) - without fear from any quarter;]
(By virtue of the horse-sacrifice, having worshipped me, Indra will again attain the position of Indra of the gods, without fear from any quarter.)
By performing the horse-sacrifice and worshipping me, Indra, the ruler of the gods, will regain his position as the king of the gods, free from any fear.
स्वकर्मभिश्च नहुषो नाशं यास्यति दुर्मतिः। कञ्चित्कालमिमं देवा मर्षयध्वमतन्द्रिताः ॥५-१३-१४॥
svakarmabhiśca nahuṣo nāśaṃ yāsyati durmatiḥ। kañcitkālamimaṃ devā marṣayadhvamatandritāḥ ॥5-13-14॥
[स्वकर्मभिः (svakarmabhiḥ) - by own actions; च (ca) - and; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahusha; नाशं (nāśaṃ) - destruction; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - evil-minded; कञ्चित्कालम् (kañcitkālam) - for some time; इमं (imaṃ) - this; देवाः (devāḥ) - O gods; मर्षयध्वम् (marṣayadhvam) - bear; अतन्द्रिताः (atandritāḥ) - without fatigue;]
(By his own actions and evil-mindedness, Nahusha will go to destruction. O gods, bear this for some time without fatigue.)
Nahusha, due to his own actions and evil nature, will eventually face destruction. O gods, please endure this situation for a while without growing weary.
श्रुत्वा विष्णोः शुभां सत्यां तां वाणीममृतोपमाम्। ततः सर्वे सुरगणाः सोपाध्यायाः सहर्षिभिः ॥ यत्र शक्रो भयोद्विग्नस्तं देशमुपचक्रमुः ॥५-१३-१५॥
śrutvā viṣṇoḥ śubhāṃ satyāṃ tāṃ vāṇīmamṛtopamām। tataḥ sarve suragaṇāḥ sopādhyāyāḥ saharṣibhiḥ ॥ yatra śakro bhayodvignastaṃ deśamupacakramuḥ ॥5-13-15॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विष्णोः (viṣṇoḥ) - of Viṣṇu; शुभाम् (śubhām) - auspicious; सत्याम् (satyām) - true; ताम् (tām) - that; वाणीम् (vāṇīm) - speech; अमृतोपमाम् (amṛtopamām) - nectar-like; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सुरगणाः (suragaṇāḥ) - the groups of gods; सोपाध्यायाः (sopādhyāyāḥ) - with their teachers; सहर्षिभिः (saharṣibhiḥ) - with sages; यत्र (yatra) - where; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; भय-उद्विग्नः (bhaya-udvignaḥ) - agitated by fear; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; उपचक्रमुः (upacakramuḥ) - approached;]
(Having heard that auspicious, true, nectar-like speech of Viṣṇu, then all the groups of gods, with their teachers and sages, approached the place where Indra was agitated by fear.)
Upon hearing the auspicious and truthful speech of Viṣṇu, which was like nectar, all the gods, along with their teachers and sages, went to the place where Indra was troubled by fear.
तत्राश्वमेधः सुमहान्महेन्द्रस्य महात्मनः। ववृते पावनार्थं वै ब्रह्महत्यापहो नृप ॥५-१३-१६॥
tatrāśvamedhaḥ sumahānmahendrasya mahātmanaḥ। vavṛte pāvanārthaṃ vai brahmahatyāpaho nṛpa ॥5-13-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अश्वमेधः (aśvamedhaḥ) - horse sacrifice; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; ववृते (vavṛte) - was performed; पावनार्थं (pāvanārthaṃ) - for purification; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्रह्महत्यापहः (brahmahatyāpahaḥ) - remover of the sin of killing a Brahmin; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(There, a very great horse sacrifice of Mahendra, the great soul, was performed for purification, indeed, as a remover of the sin of killing a Brahmin, O king.)
There, a grand Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice) was conducted by the great Mahendra for the purpose of purification, serving as a means to absolve the sin of Brahminicide, O king.
विभज्य ब्रह्महत्यां तु वृक्षेषु च नदीषु च। पर्वतेषु पृथिव्यां च स्त्रीषु चैव युधिष्ठिर ॥५-१३-१७॥
vibhajya brahmahatyāṃ tu vṛkṣeṣu ca nadīṣu ca। parvateṣu pṛthivyāṃ ca strīṣu caiva yudhiṣṭhira ॥5-13-17॥
[विभज्य (vibhajya) - dividing; ब्रह्महत्यां (brahmahatyāṃ) - Brahmin-murder; तु (tu) - but; वृक्षेषु (vṛkṣeṣu) - in trees; च (ca) - and; नदीषु (nadīṣu) - in rivers; च (ca) - and; पर्वतेषु (parvateṣu) - in mountains; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; च (ca) - and; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - in women; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
(Dividing Brahmin-murder but in trees and in rivers, in mountains, on earth, and in women indeed, O Yudhishthira.)
O Yudhishthira, the sin of killing a Brahmin is distributed among trees, rivers, mountains, the earth, and women.
संविभज्य च भूतेषु विसृज्य च सुरेश्वरः। विज्वरः पूतपाप्मा च वासवोऽभवदात्मवान् ॥५-१३-१८॥
saṁvibhajya ca bhūteṣu visṛjya ca sureśvaraḥ। vijvaraḥ pūtapāpmā ca vāsavo'bhavadātmavān ॥5-13-18॥
[संविभज्य (saṁvibhajya) - distributing; च (ca) - and; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - among beings; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - releasing; च (ca) - and; सुरेश्वरः (sureśvaraḥ) - lord of gods; विज्वरः (vijvaraḥ) - free from fever; पूतपाप्मा (pūtapāpmā) - purified from sin; च (ca) - and; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed;]
(Distributing among beings and releasing, the lord of gods, free from fever and purified from sin, Indra became self-possessed.)

अकम्प्यं नहुषं स्थानाद्दृष्ट्वा च बलसूदनः। तेजोघ्नं सर्वभूतानां वरदानाच्च दुःसहम् ॥५-१३-१९॥
akampyaṃ nahuṣaṃ sthānāddṛṣṭvā ca balasūdanaḥ। tejo-ghnaṃ sarva-bhūtānāṃ varadānācca duḥsaham ॥5-13-19॥
[अकम्प्यं (akampyaṃ) - unshakeable; नहुषं (nahuṣaṃ) - Nahusha; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from position; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; बलसूदनः (balasūdanaḥ) - destroyer of strength; तेजोग्नं (tejo-ghnaṃ) - destroyer of energy; सर्वभूतानां (sarva-bhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; वरदानात् (varadānāt) - due to boon; च (ca) - and; दुःसहम् (duḥsaham) - unbearable;]
(The destroyer of strength, having seen the unshakeable Nahusha removed from position, unbearable due to the boon, destroyer of energy of all beings.)

ततः शचीपतिर्वीरः पुनरेव व्यनश्यत। अदृश्यः सर्वभूतानां कालाकाङ्क्षी चचार ह ॥५-१३-२०॥
tataḥ śacīpatir vīraḥ punar eva vyanaśyata। adṛśyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ kālākāṅkṣī cacāra ha ॥5-13-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - lord of Shachi; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; वयनश्यत (vyanaśyata) - disappeared; अदृश्यः (adṛśyaḥ) - invisible; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; कालाकाङ्क्षी (kālākāṅkṣī) - desiring time; चचार (cacāra) - wandered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then the lord of Shachi, the hero, indeed disappeared again. Invisible to all beings, desiring time, he indeed wandered.)
Then the heroic lord of Shachi vanished once more. He became invisible to all beings and wandered, yearning for the right time.
प्रनष्टे तु ततः शक्रे शची शोकसमन्विता। हा शक्रेति तदा देवी विललाप सुदुःखिता ॥५-१३-२१॥
pranaṣṭe tu tataḥ śakre śacī śokasamanvitā। hā śakreti tadā devī vilalāpa suduḥkhitā ॥5-13-21॥
[प्रनष्टे (pranaṣṭe) - destroyed; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रे (śakre) - Śakra; शची (śacī) - Śacī; शोकसमन्विता (śokasamanvitā) - filled with grief; हा (hā) - alas; शक्रेति (śakreti) - O Śakra; तदा (tadā) - then; देवी (devī) - the goddess; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सुदुःखिता (suduḥkhitā) - very sorrowful;]
(But then, Śacī, filled with grief, lamented, "Alas, O Śakra," very sorrowful.)
When Śakra was destroyed, Śacī, overwhelmed with grief, cried out in deep sorrow, "Alas, O Śakra."
यदि दत्तं यदि हुतं गुरवस्तोषिता यदि। एकभर्तृत्वमेवास्तु सत्यं यद्यस्ति वा मयि ॥५-१३-२२॥
yadi dattaṁ yadi hutaṁ guravastoṣitā yadi। ekabhartṛtvamevāstu satyaṁ yadyasti vā mayi ॥5-13-22॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; दत्तं (dattaṁ) - given; यदि (yadi) - if; हुतं (hutaṁ) - offered; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - teachers; तोषिता (toṣitā) - pleased; यदि (yadi) - if; एकभर्तृत्वम् (ekabhartṛtvam) - one-husbandhood; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सत्यं (satyaṁ) - truth; यदि (yadi) - if; अस्ति (asti) - exists; वा (vā) - or; मयि (mayi) - in me;]
(If given, if offered, if the teachers are pleased, let there indeed be one-husbandhood, if truth exists in me or not.)
If what has been given and offered has pleased the teachers, then let there be indeed the truth of having one husband, if that truth exists in me or not.
पुण्यां चेमामहं दिव्यां प्रवृत्तामुत्तरायणे। देवीं रात्रिं नमस्यामि सिध्यतां मे मनोरथः ॥५-१३-२३॥
puṇyāṃ cemāmahaṃ divyāṃ pravṛttāmuttarāyaṇe। devīṃ rātriṃ namasyāmi sidhyatāṃ me manorathaḥ ॥5-13-23॥
[पुण्यां (puṇyām) - auspicious; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; दिव्यां (divyām) - divine; प्रवृत्ताम् (pravṛttām) - set in motion; उत्तरायणे (uttarāyaṇe) - in the northern course; देवीं (devīm) - goddess; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; नमस्यामि (namasyāmi) - I bow; सिध्यताम् (sidhyatām) - may it be fulfilled; मे (me) - my; मनोरथः (manorathaḥ) - desire;]
(I bow to this auspicious, divine night set in motion in the northern course; may my desire be fulfilled.)
I offer my respects to this sacred and divine night that has commenced in the northern course; may my wishes come true.
प्रयता च निशां देवीमुपातिष्ठत तत्र सा। पतिव्रतात्वात्सत्येन सोपश्रुतिमथाकरोत् ॥५-१३-२४॥
prayatā ca niśāṃ devīmupātiṣṭhata tatra sā। pativratātvātsatyena sopaśrutimathākarot ॥5-13-24॥
[प्रयता (prayatā) - prepared; च (ca) - and; निशाम् (niśām) - night; देवीम् (devīm) - goddess; उपातिष्ठत (upātiṣṭhata) - approached; तत्र (tatra) - there; सा (sā) - she; पतिव्रतात्वात् (pativratātvāt) - due to chastity; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; सोपश्रुतिम् (sopaśrutim) - with hearing; अथ (atha) - then; अकरोत् (akarot) - did.;]
(Prepared and the goddess approached the night there. Due to chastity and truth, she then did with hearing.)
The prepared goddess approached the night there. Because of her chastity and truthfulness, she then listened.
यत्रास्ते देवराजोऽसौ तं देशं दर्शयस्व मे। इत्याहोपश्रुतिं देवी सत्यं सत्येन दृश्यताम् ॥५-१३-२५॥
yatrāste devarājo'sau taṃ deśaṃ darśayasva me। ityāhopaśrutiṃ devī satyaṃ satyena dṛśyatām ॥5-13-25॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; आस्ते (āste) - resides; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of gods; असौ (asau) - that; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - place; दर्शयस्व (darśayasva) - show; मे (me) - to me; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; उपश्रुतिम् (upaśrutim) - to the hearing; देवी (devī) - the goddess; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; दृश्यताम् (dṛśyatām) - let it be seen;]
(Where the king of gods resides, show me that place. Thus said the goddess to the hearing, "Let the truth be seen by truth.")
The goddess requested, "Show me the place where the king of gods resides." She declared to the hearing, "Let the truth be revealed by truth."
