ततः शक्रः स्तूयमानो गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणैः। ऐरावतं समारुह्य द्विपेन्द्रं लक्षणैर्युतम् ॥५-१८-१॥
tataḥ śakraḥ stūyamāno gandharvāpsarasāṃ gaṇaiḥ। airāvataṃ samāruhya dvipendraṃ lakṣaṇairyutam ॥5-18-1॥

स समेत्य महेन्द्राण्या देवराजः शतक्रतुः। मुदा परमया युक्तः पालयामास देवराट् ॥५-१८-४॥

Indra, the king of gods, after meeting with Mahendra's wife, joyfully took on the responsibility of protecting the kingdom.
ततः स भगवांस्तत्र अङ्गिराः समदृश्यत। अथर्ववेदमन्त्रैश्च देवेन्द्रं समपूजयत् ॥५-१८-५॥
tataḥ sa bhagavāṃstatra aṅgirāḥ samadṛśyata। atharvavedamantraiśca devendraṃ samapūjayat ॥5-18-5॥

एवं सम्पूज्य भगवानथर्वाङ्गिरसं तदा। व्यसर्जयन्महाराज देवराजः शतक्रतुः ॥५-१८-८॥

सम्पूज्य सर्वांस्त्रिदशानृषींश्चापि तपोधनान्। इन्द्रः प्रमुदितो राजन्धर्मेणापालयत्प्रजाः ॥५-१८-९॥
sampūjya sarvāṃstridaśānṛṣīṃścāpi tapodhanān। indraḥ pramudito rājandharmeṇāpālayatprajāḥ ॥5-18-9॥

एवं दुःखमनुप्राप्तमिन्द्रेण सह भार्यया। अज्ञातवासश्च कृतः शत्रूणां वधकाङ्क्षया ॥५-१८-१०॥
evaṃ duḥkham anuprāptam indreṇa saha bhāryayā। ajñātavāsaś ca kṛtaḥ śatrūṇāṃ vadhakāṅkṣayā ॥5-18-10॥

(Thus, suffering was obtained by Indra with his wife, and incognito exile was done with the desire to kill the enemies.)
Thus, Indra, along with his wife, endured suffering and went into incognito exile with the intention of defeating their enemies.
नात्र मन्युस्त्वया कार्यो यत्क्लिष्टोऽसि महावने। द्रौपद्या सह राजेन्द्र भ्रातृभिश्च महात्मभिः ॥५-१८-११॥
nātra manyustvayā kāryo yatkliṣṭo'si mahāvane। draupadyā saha rājendra bhrātṛbhiśca mahātmabhiḥ ॥5-18-11॥
[न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; यत् (yat) - because; क्लिष्टः (kliṣṭaḥ) - afflicted; असि (asi) - you are; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - with Draupadi; सह (saha) - together; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; च (ca) - and; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - great souls;]
(Here, anger should not be by you because you are afflicted in the great forest with Draupadi, together with your brothers, O king, and great souls.)
O King, do not harbor anger here, as you are enduring hardships in the great forest along with Draupadi and your noble brothers.
एवं त्वमपि राजेन्द्र राज्यं प्राप्स्यसि भारत। वृत्रं हत्वा यथा प्राप्तः शक्रः कौरवनन्दन ॥५-१८-१२॥
evaṃ tvamapi rājendra rājyaṃ prāpsyasi bhārata। vṛtraṃ hatvā yathā prāptaḥ śakraḥ kauravanandana ॥5-18-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - will obtain; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; वृत्रम् (vṛtram) - Vritra; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; यथा (yathā) - as; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; कौरवनन्दन (kauravanandana) - O joy of the Kauravas;]
(Thus, you also, O king, will obtain the kingdom, O descendant of Bharata, having slain Vritra, as Indra obtained.)
Thus, O descendant of Bharata, you too, O joy of the Kauravas, will gain the kingdom, just as Indra did after slaying Vritra.
दुराचारश्च नहुषो ब्रह्मद्विट्पापचेतनः। अगस्त्यशापाभिहतो विनष्टः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥५-१८-१३॥
durācāraśca nahuṣo brahmadviṭpāpacetanaḥ। agastyaśāpābhihato vinaṣṭaḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ॥5-18-13॥
[दुराचारः (durācāraḥ) - of bad conduct; च (ca) - and; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahusha; ब्रह्मद्विट् (brahmadviṭ) - brahmin-cursing; पापचेतनः (pāpacetanaḥ) - evil-minded; अगस्त्य (agastya) - Agastya; शापाभिहतः (śāpābhihataḥ) - cursed; विनष्टः (vinaṣṭaḥ) - destroyed; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Nahusha, of bad conduct and brahmin-cursing, evil-minded, cursed by Agastya, was destroyed for eternal years.)
Nahusha, who was of bad conduct and cursed brahmins, was evil-minded and was destroyed by the curse of Agastya for many eternal years.
एवं तव दुरात्मानः शत्रवः शत्रुसूदन। क्षिप्रं नाशं गमिष्यन्ति कर्णदुर्योधनादयः ॥५-१८-१४॥
evaṃ tava durātmānaḥ śatravaḥ śatrusūdana। kṣipraṃ nāśaṃ gamiṣyanti karṇaduryodhanādayaḥ ॥5-18-14॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तव (tava) - your; दुरात्मानः (durātmānaḥ) - wicked; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; शत्रुसूदन (śatrusūdana) - O enemy-slayer; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; नाशं (nāśaṃ) - destruction; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go; कर्णदुर्योधनादयः (karṇaduryodhanādayaḥ) - Karna, Duryodhana, and others;]
(Thus, your wicked enemies, O enemy-slayer, Karna, Duryodhana, and others, will quickly go to destruction.)
Thus, O slayer of enemies, your wicked foes like Karna and Duryodhana will soon meet their end.
ततः सागरपर्यन्तां भोक्ष्यसे मेदिनीमिमाम्। भ्रातृभिः सहितो वीर द्रौपद्या च सहाभिभो ॥५-१८-१५॥
tataḥ sāgaraparyantāṃ bhokṣyase medinīmimām। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito vīra draupadyā ca sahābhibho ॥5-18-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सागरपर्यन्ताम् (sāgaraparyantām) - up to the ocean; भोक्ष्यसे (bhokṣyase) - you will enjoy; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; वीर (vīra) - O hero; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - with Draupadi; च (ca) - and; सहाभिभो (sahābhibho) - together, O lord;]
(Then you will enjoy this earth up to the ocean, together with your brothers, O hero, and with Draupadi, together, O lord.)
Then, O hero, you shall rule this land extending to the ocean, alongside your brothers and Draupadi, O lord.
उपाख्यानमिदं शक्रविजयं वेदसंमितम्। राज्ञा व्यूढेष्वनीकेषु श्रोतव्यं जयमिच्छता ॥५-१८-१६॥
upākhyānamidaṃ śakravijayaṃ vedasaṃmitam। rājñā vyūḍheṣvanīkeṣu śrotavyaṃ jayamicchatā ॥5-18-16॥
[उपाख्यानम् (upākhyānam) - story; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शक्रविजयम् (śakravijayam) - Indra's victory; वेदसंमितम् (vedasaṃmitam) - Veda-like; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; व्यूढेषु (vyūḍheṣu) - in the arranged; अनीकेषु (anīkeṣu) - armies; श्रोतव्यम् (śrotavyam) - to be heard; जयम् (jayam) - victory; इच्छता (icchatā) - desiring;]
(This story of Indra's victory, akin to the Vedas, is to be heard by the king in the arranged armies, desiring victory.)
This tale of Indra's triumph, comparable to the Vedas, should be listened to by the king amidst the organized armies, for those who seek victory.
तस्मात्संश्रावयामि त्वां विजयं जयतां वर। संस्तूयमाना वर्धन्ते महात्मानो युधिष्ठिर ॥५-१८-१७॥
tasmātsaṃśrāvayāmi tvāṃ vijayaṃ jayatāṃ vara। saṃstūyamānā vardhante mahātmāno yudhiṣṭhira ॥5-18-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; संश्रावयामि (saṃśrāvayāmi) - I proclaim; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; जयताम् (jayatām) - of the victorious; वर (vara) - best; संस्तूयमाना (saṃstūyamānā) - being praised; वर्धन्ते (vardhante) - they grow; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
(Therefore, I proclaim you, the best of the victorious, O Yudhishthira. Being praised, great souls grow.)
Therefore, I announce to you, O Yudhishthira, the best among the victorious. When praised, great souls like you flourish.
क्षत्रियाणामभावोऽयं युधिष्ठिर महात्मनाम्। दुर्योधनापराधेन भीमार्जुनबलेन च ॥५-१८-१८॥
kṣatriyāṇāmabhāvo'yaṃ yudhiṣṭhira mahātmanām। duryodhanāparādhena bhīmārjunabalena ca ॥5-18-18॥
[क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the Kshatriyas; अभावः (abhāvaḥ) - absence; अयम् (ayam) - this; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great souls; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; अपराधेन (aparādhena) - by the offense; भीम (bhīma) - Bhima; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; बलेन (balena) - by the strength; च (ca) - and;]
(This absence of the Kshatriyas, O Yudhishthira, of the great souls, is due to Duryodhana's offense and the strength of Bhima and Arjuna.)
O Yudhishthira, the absence of the Kshatriyas, who were great souls, is due to Duryodhana's misdeeds and the might of Bhima and Arjuna.
आख्यानमिन्द्रविजयं य इदं नियतः पठेत्। धूतपाप्मा जितस्वर्गः स प्रेत्येह च मोदते ॥५-१८-१९॥
ākhyānamindravijayaṃ ya idaṃ niyataḥ paṭhet। dhūtapāpmā jitasvargaḥ sa pretyeha ca modate ॥5-18-19॥
[आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - story; इन्द्रविजयम् (indravijayam) - Indra's victory; यः (yaḥ) - who; इदम् (idam) - this; नियतः (niyataḥ) - regularly; पठेत् (paṭhet) - recites; धूतपाप्मा (dhūtapāpmā) - sinless; जितस्वर्गः (jitasvargaḥ) - conquered heaven; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; मोदते (modate) - rejoices;]
(The story of Indra's victory, whoever regularly recites this, becomes sinless, conquers heaven, and rejoices here and after death.)
Whoever regularly recites the story of Indra's victory becomes free from sin, attains heaven, and rejoices both in this life and the next.
न चारिजं भयं तस्य न चापुत्रो भवेन्नरः। नापदं प्राप्नुयात्काञ्चिद्दीर्घमायुश्च विन्दति ॥ सर्वत्र जयमाप्नोति न कदाचित्पराजयम् ॥५-१८-२०॥
na cārijaṃ bhayaṃ tasya na cāputro bhavennaraḥ। nāpadaṃ prāpnuyātkāñciddīrghamāyuśca vindati ॥ sarvatra jayamāpnoti na kadācitparājayam ॥5-18-20॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अरिजं (arijaṃ) - enemy-born; भयं (bhayaṃ) - fear; तस्य (tasya) - his; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपुत्रः (aputraḥ) - sonless; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; नरः (naraḥ) - man; न (na) - not; आपदं (āpadaṃ) - calamity; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - attains; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; च (ca) - and; विन्दति (vindati) - finds; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - obtains; न (na) - not; कदाचित् (kadācit) - ever; पराजयम् (parājayam) - defeat;]
(He does not fear enemies, nor does he become sonless. He does not encounter any calamity and finds long life. He obtains victory everywhere and never faces defeat.)
He is free from the fear of enemies and will not be without a son. He will not face any calamity and will enjoy a long life. He will achieve victory everywhere and will never experience defeat.

एवमाश्वासितो राजा शल्येन भरतर्षभ। पूजयामास विधिवच्छल्यं धर्मभृतां वरः ॥५-१८-२१॥
evam āśvāsito rājā śalyena bharatarṣabha। pūjayām āsa vidhivacchalyaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥5-18-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वासितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - consoled; राजा (rājā) - king; शल्येन (śalyena) - by Shalya; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; पूजयामास (pūjayām āsa) - honored; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; शल्यम् (śalyam) - Shalya; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Thus consoled, the king, O best of the Bharatas, properly honored Shalya, the best of the upholders of dharma.)
Thus reassured by Shalya, the king, O best of the Bharatas, duly honored Shalya, the foremost among the upholders of dharma.
श्रुत्वा शल्यस्य वचनं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। प्रत्युवाच महाबाहुर्मद्रराजमिदं वचः ॥५-१८-२२॥
śrutvā śalyasya vacanaṃ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। pratyuvāca mahābāhur madrarājam idaṃ vacaḥ ॥5-18-22॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शल्यस्य (śalyasya) - of Śalya; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - words; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; मद्रराजम् (madrarājam) - to the king of Madra; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having heard the words of Śalya, Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, mighty-armed, replied this speech to the king of Madra.)
Upon hearing Śalya's words, Yudhishthira, the mighty-armed son of Kunti, responded to the king of Madra with these words.
भवान्कर्णस्य सारथ्यं करिष्यति न संशयः। तत्र तेजोवधः कार्यः कर्णस्य मम संस्तवैः ॥५-१८-२३॥
bhavān karṇasya sārathyaṃ kariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ। tatra tejovadhaḥ kāryaḥ karṇasya mama saṃstavaiḥ ॥5-18-23॥
[भवान् (bhavān) - you; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; सारथ्यम् (sārathyam) - charioteering; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; तत्र (tatra) - there; तेजोवधः (tejovadhaḥ) - destruction of brilliance; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; मम (mama) - my; संस्तवैः (saṃstavaiḥ) - by praises;]
(You will do the charioteering of Karna, no doubt. There, the destruction of brilliance should be done of Karna by my praises.)
You will undoubtedly serve as Karna's charioteer. There, the brilliance of Karna should be diminished by my praises.
शल्य उवाच॥
śalya uvāca॥
[शल्य (śalya) - Śalya; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Śalya said:)
Śalya spoke:
एवमेतत्करिष्यामि यथा मां सम्प्रभाषसे। यच्चान्यदपि शक्ष्यामि तत्करिष्याम्यहं तव ॥५-१८-२४॥
evametat kariṣyāmi yathā māṃ samprabhāṣase। yaccānyadapi śakṣyāmi tatkariṣyāmyahaṃ tava ॥5-18-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यथा (yathā) - as; मां (māṃ) - me; सम्प्रभाषसे (samprabhāṣase) - you speak; यत् (yat) - what; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अपि (api) - also; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I am able; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Thus, I will do this as you speak to me. And whatever else I am able, I will do that for you.)
I will do exactly as you have spoken to me. Additionally, whatever else I can do, I will do that for you.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Vaiśampāyana said:)
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
तत आमन्त्र्य कौन्तेयाञ्शल्यो मद्राधिपस्तदा। जगाम सबलः श्रीमान्दुर्योधनमरिंदमः ॥५-१८-२५॥
tata āmantrya kaunteyāñśalyo madrādhipastadā। jagāma sabalaḥ śrīmānduryodhanamariṃdamaḥ ॥5-18-25॥
[तत (tata) - then; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; कौन्तेयान् (kaunteyān) - the sons of Kunti; शल्यः (śalyaḥ) - Shalya; मद्राधिपः (madrādhipaḥ) - the king of Madra; तदा (tadā) - then; जगाम (jagāma) - went; सबलः (sabalḥ) - with his army; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - the illustrious; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अरिंदमः (ariṃdamaḥ) - the subduer of enemies;]
(Then, having addressed the sons of Kunti, Shalya, the king of Madra, went with his army to the illustrious Duryodhana, the subduer of enemies.)
Then Shalya, the king of Madra, addressed the sons of Kunti and went with his army to the illustrious Duryodhana, the subduer of enemies.
