वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

(Vaishampayana said:)
Vaishampayana spoke:
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रज्ञावृद्धो महाद्युतिः। सम्पूज्यैनं यथाकालं भीष्मो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-२१-१॥
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā prajñāvṛddho mahādyutiḥ। sampūjyainaṁ yathākālaṁ bhīṣmo vacanamabravīt ॥5-21-1॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; तद्वचनं (tadvacanaṁ) - those words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रज्ञावृद्धः (prajñāvṛddhaḥ) - wise elder; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - greatly radiant; सम्पूज्य (sampūjya) - having honored; एनं (enaṁ) - him; यथाकालं (yathākālaṁ) - at the right time; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard those words of his, the wise elder, greatly radiant, having honored him at the right time, Bhishma spoke words.)
Upon hearing those words, the wise and radiant elder Bhishma, after duly honoring him at the appropriate time, spoke.
दिष्ट्या कुशलिनः सर्वे पाण्डवाः सह बान्धवैः। दिष्ट्या सहायवन्तश्च दिष्ट्या धर्मे च ते रताः ॥५-२१-२॥
diṣṭyā kuśalinaḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ। diṣṭyā sahāyavantaśca diṣṭyā dharme ca te ratāḥ ॥5-21-2॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; कुशलिनः (kuśalinaḥ) - well; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; सह (saha) - with; बान्धवैः (bāndhavaiḥ) - relatives; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; सहायवन्तः (sahāyavantaḥ) - having allies; च (ca) - and; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; रताः (ratāḥ) - engaged;]
(By fortune, all the Pāṇḍavas are well with their relatives. By fortune, they have allies, and by fortune, they are engaged in righteousness.)
Fortunately, all the Pāṇḍavas are well along with their relatives. They are fortunate to have allies and to be engaged in righteousness.
दिष्ट्या च सन्धिकामास्ते भ्रातरः कुरुनन्दनाः। दिष्ट्या न युद्धमनसः सह दामोदरेण ते ॥५-२१-३॥
diṣṭyā ca sandhikāmāste bhrātaraḥ kurunandanāḥ। diṣṭyā na yuddhamanasaḥ saha dāmodareṇa te ॥5-21-3॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; च (ca) - and; सन्धिकामाः (sandhikāmāḥ) - desiring peace; अस्ते (aste) - are; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; कुरुनन्दनाः (kurunandanāḥ) - descendants of Kuru; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; न (na) - not; युद्धमनसः (yuddhamanasaḥ) - inclined to fight; सह (saha) - with; दामोदरेण (dāmodareṇa) - with Damodara; ते (te) - they;]
(By fortune, the brothers, descendants of Kuru, are desiring peace and not inclined to fight with Damodara.)
Fortunately, the Kuru brothers are seeking peace and are not inclined to engage in battle with Damodara.
भवता सत्यमुक्तं च सर्वमेतन्न संशयः। अतितीक्ष्णं तु ते वाक्यं ब्राह्मण्यादिति मे मतिः ॥५-२१-४॥
bhavatā satyam uktaṃ ca sarvam etan na saṃśayaḥ। atitīkṣṇaṃ tu te vākyaṃ brāhmaṇyād iti me matiḥ ॥5-21-4॥
[भवता (bhavatā) - by you; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; अतितीक्ष्णम् (atitīkṣṇam) - very sharp; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; ब्राह्मण्यात् (brāhmaṇyāt) - due to being a Brahmin; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(By you, truth is spoken and all this is without doubt. But your words are very sharp due to being a Brahmin, thus is my opinion.)
You have spoken the truth, and there is no doubt about it. However, I find your words to be very sharp, perhaps because of your Brahmin nature, this is my opinion.
असंशयं क्लेशितास्ते वने चेह च पाण्डवाः। प्राप्ताश्च धर्मतः सर्वं पितुर्धनमसंशयम् ॥५-२१-५॥
asaṁśayaṁ kleśitāste vane ceha ca pāṇḍavāḥ। prāptāśca dharmataḥ sarvaṁ piturdhanamasaṁśayam ॥5-21-5॥
[असंशयं (asaṁśayam) - undoubtedly; क्लेशिताः (kleśitāḥ) - afflicted; ते (te) - they; वने (vane) - in the forest; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - obtained; च (ca) - and; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - rightfully; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - undoubtedly;]
(Undoubtedly, the Pandavas, afflicted in the forest and here, have rightfully obtained all the wealth of their father, undoubtedly.)
There is no doubt that the Pandavas, who have suffered both in the forest and here, have rightfully gained all of their father's wealth.
किरीटी बलवान्पार्थः कृतास्त्रश्च महाबलः। को हि पाण्डुसुतं युद्धे विषहेत धनञ्जयम् ॥५-२१-६॥
kirīṭī balavānpārthaḥ kṛtāstraśca mahābalaḥ। ko hi pāṇḍusutaṃ yuddhe viṣaheta dhanañjayam ॥5-21-6॥
[किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a diadem; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - son of Pritha; कृतास्त्रः (kṛtāstraḥ) - skilled in weapons; च (ca) - and; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डुसुतं (pāṇḍusutaṃ) - son of Pandu; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; विषहेत (viṣaheta) - can withstand; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya;]
(The one with a diadem, strong son of Pritha, skilled in weapons and mighty; who indeed can withstand the son of Pandu, Dhananjaya, in battle?)
Arjuna, the one with a diadem, is strong, the son of Pritha, skilled in weapons and mighty. Who indeed can withstand Arjuna, the son of Pandu, in battle?
अपि वज्रधरः साक्षात्किमुतान्ये धनुर्भृतः। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां समर्थ इति मे मतिः ॥५-२१-७॥
api vajradharaḥ sākṣātkimutānye dhanurbhṛtaḥ। trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ samartha iti me matiḥ ॥5-21-7॥
[अपि (api) - also; वज्रधरः (vajradharaḥ) - Vajradhara; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; किमु (kimu) - what to say of; तान्ये (tānye) - others; धनुर्भृतः (dhanurbhṛtaḥ) - archers; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - also; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - worlds; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Even Vajradhara directly, what to say of other archers, is capable of the three worlds, thus is my opinion.)
Even Vajradhara himself is capable of handling the three worlds, let alone other archers. This is my belief.
भीष्मे ब्रुवति तद्वाक्यं धृष्टमाक्षिप्य मन्युमान्। दुर्योधनं समालोक्य कर्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-२१-८॥
bhīṣme bruvati tadvākyaṃ dhṛṣṭamākṣipya manyumān। duryodhanaṃ samālokya karṇo vacanamabravīt ॥5-21-8॥
[भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - in Bhishma; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; तद्वाक्यं (tadvākyaṃ) - those words; धृष्टमाक्षिप्य (dhṛṣṭamākṣipya) - boldly interrupting; मन्युमान् (manyumān) - angry; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanaṃ) - Duryodhana; समालोक्य (samālokya) - looking at; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(While Bhishma was speaking those words, angrily interrupting, looking at Duryodhana, Karna said words.)
While Bhishma was speaking, Karna, looking at Duryodhana and interrupting boldly in anger, said.
न तन्न विदितं ब्रह्मँल्लोके भूतेन केनचित्। पुनरुक्तेन किं तेन भाषितेन पुनः पुनः ॥५-२१-९॥
na tan na viditaṃ brahmaṁlloke bhūtena kenacit। punaruktena kiṃ tena bhāṣitena punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-21-9॥
[न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; लोके (loke) - in the world; भूतेन (bhūtena) - by any being; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; पुनरुक्तेन (punaruktena) - by repetition; किं (kiṃ) - what; तेन (tena) - by that; भाषितेन (bhāṣitena) - by speech; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Not that is known Brahman in the world by any being by anyone. By repetition what by that by speech again again.)
Brahman is not known in the world by any being or anyone. What is the use of repeating the same speech again and again?
दुर्योधनार्थे शकुनिर्द्यूते निर्जितवान्पुरा। समयेन गतोऽरण्यं पाण्डुपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-२१-१०॥
duryodhanārthe śakunirdyūte nirjitavānpurā। samayena gato'raṇyaṃ pāṇḍuputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-21-10॥
[दुर्योधनार्थे (duryodhanārthe) - for Duryodhana; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Shakuni; द्यूते (dyūte) - in the game of dice; निर्जितवान् (nirjitavān) - defeated; पुरा (purā) - formerly; समयेन (samayena) - by agreement; गतः (gataḥ) - went; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - to the forest; पाण्डुपुत्रः (pāṇḍuputraḥ) - the son of Pandu; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(For Duryodhana, Shakuni defeated (him) in the game of dice formerly. By agreement, the son of Pandu, Yudhishthira, went to the forest.)
In the past, for the sake of Duryodhana, Shakuni defeated Yudhishthira in the game of dice. As per the agreement, Yudhishthira, the son of Pandu, went to the forest.
न तं समयमादृत्य राज्यमिच्छति पैतृकम्। बलमाश्रित्य मत्स्यानां पाञ्चालानां च पार्थिवः ॥५-२१-११॥
na taṃ samayamādṛtya rājyamicchati paitṛkam। balamāśritya matsyānāṃ pāñcālānāṃ ca pārthivaḥ ॥5-21-11॥
[न (na) - not; तं (taṃ) - that; समयम् (samayam) - time; आदृत्य (ādṛtya) - respecting; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; पैतृकम् (paitṛkam) - ancestral; बलम् (balam) - strength; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - relying on; मत्स्यानाम् (matsyānām) - of the Matsyas; पाञ्चालानाम् (pāñcālānām) - of the Panchalas; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the prince;]
(Not respecting that time, the prince desires the ancestral kingdom, relying on the strength of the Matsyas and the Panchalas.)
The prince, disregarding that time, seeks his ancestral kingdom, relying on the strength of the Matsyas and the Panchalas.
दुर्योधनो भयाद्विद्वन्न दद्यात्पदमन्ततः। धर्मतस्तु महीं कृत्स्नां प्रदद्याच्छत्रवेऽपि च ॥५-२१-१२॥
duryodhano bhayādvidvanna dadyātpadamantataḥ। dharmatastu mahīṃ kṛtsnāṃ pradadyācchatrave'pi ca ॥5-21-12॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O wise one; न (na) - not; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - would give; पदम् (padam) - position; अन्ततः (antataḥ) - ultimately; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - rightfully; तु (tu) - but; महीं (mahīm) - earth; कृत्स्नाम् (kṛtsnām) - entire; प्रदद्यात् (pradadyāt) - would give; शत्रवे (śatrave) - to the enemy; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and;]
(Duryodhana, out of fear, O wise one, would not give a position ultimately; but rightfully, he would give the entire earth even to the enemy.)

यदि काङ्क्षन्ति ते राज्यं पितृपैतामहं पुनः। यथाप्रतिज्ञं कालं तं चरन्तु वनमाश्रिताः ॥५-२१-१३॥
yadi kāṅkṣanti te rājyaṃ pitṛpaitāmahaṃ punaḥ। yathāpratijñaṃ kālaṃ taṃ carantu vanamāśritāḥ ॥5-21-13॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; काङ्क्षन्ति (kāṅkṣanti) - they desire; ते (te) - they; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmahaṃ) - ancestral; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यथाप्रतिज्ञं (yathāpratijñaṃ) - as promised; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; तं (taṃ) - that; चरन्तु (carantu) - let them spend; वनमाश्रिताः (vanamāśritāḥ) - dwelling in the forest;]
(If they desire the kingdom, ancestral again, as promised, let them spend that time dwelling in the forest.)
If they wish to regain the ancestral kingdom, as promised, let them fulfill the time dwelling in the forest.
ततो दुर्योधनस्याङ्के वर्तन्तामकुतोभयाः। अधार्मिकामिमां बुद्धिं कुर्युर्मौर्ख्याद्धि केवलम् ॥५-२१-१४॥
tato duryodhanasyāṅke vartantāmakutobhayāḥ। adhārmikāmimāṃ buddhiṃ kuryurmaurkhyāddhi kevalam ॥5-21-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; अङ्के (aṅke) - in the lap; वर्तन्ताम् (vartantām) - are present; अकुतोभयाः (akutobhayāḥ) - fearless; अधार्मिकाम् (adhārmikām) - unrighteous; इमाम् (imām) - this; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intention; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - may do; मौर्ख्यात् (maurkhyāt) - out of foolishness; हि (hi) - indeed; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(Then, in the lap of Duryodhana, the fearless are present. They may perform this unrighteous intention out of foolishness indeed only.)
Then, in Duryodhana's lap, the fearless ones are present. They might act on this unrighteous intention purely out of foolishness.
अथ ते धर्ममुत्सृज्य युद्धमिच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः। आसाद्येमान्कुरुश्रेष्ठान्स्मरिष्यन्ति वचो मम ॥५-२१-१५॥
atha te dharmam utsṛjya yuddham icchanti pāṇḍavāḥ। āsādya imān kuruśreṣṭhān smariṣyanti vaco mama ॥5-21-15॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - they; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - abandoning; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; इच्छन्ति (icchanti) - desire; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; इमान् (imān) - these; कुरुश्रेष्ठान् (kuruśreṣṭhān) - the best of the Kurus; स्मरिष्यन्ति (smariṣyanti) - will remember; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; मम (mama) - my;]
(Then they, the Pandavas, abandoning duty, desire war. Having approached these best of the Kurus, they will remember my words.)
Then the Pandavas, having abandoned their duty, desire war. Upon approaching these esteemed Kurus, they will recall my words.
भीष्म उवाच॥

[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Bhishma said:)

किं नु राधेय वाचा ते कर्म तत्स्मर्तुमर्हसि। एक एव यदा पार्थः षड्रथाञ्जितवान्युधि ॥५-२१-१६॥
kiṁ nu rādheya vācā te karma tatsmartumarhasi। eka eva yadā pārthaḥ ṣaḍrathāñjitavānyudhi ॥5-21-16॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; वाचा (vācā) - by words; ते (te) - your; कर्म (karma) - action; तत् (tat) - that; स्मर्तुम् (smartum) - to remember; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; एक (eka) - one; एव (eva) - only; यदा (yadā) - when; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; षड्रथान् (ṣaḍrathān) - six chariots; जितवान् (jitavān) - conquered; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(What indeed, O son of Radha, by words your action that to remember you should, when Arjuna only one conquered six chariots in battle.)
O son of Radha, you should remember your words and actions, especially when Arjuna alone conquered six chariots in battle.
न चेदेवं करिष्यामो यदयं ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत्। ध्रुवं युधि हतास्तेन भक्षयिष्याम पांसुकान् ॥५-२१-१७॥
na cedevaṃ kariṣyāmo yadayam brāhmaṇo'bravīt। dhruvaṃ yudhi hatāstena bhakṣayiṣyāma pāṃsukān ॥5-21-17॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; करिष्यामः (kariṣyāmaḥ) - we will do; यत् (yat) - that; अयम् (ayam) - this; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; तेन (tena) - by him; भक्षयिष्याम (bhakṣayiṣyāma) - we will eat; पांसुकान् (pāṃsukān) - dust;]
(If we do not act as this Brahmin has said, certainly we will be killed in battle by him and will eat dust.)
If we do not follow what this Brahmin has said, we will surely be defeated in battle by him and will end up eating dust.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

धृतराष्ट्रस्ततो भीष्ममनुमान्य प्रसाद्य च। अवभर्त्स्य च राधेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-२१-१८॥
dhṛtarāṣṭrastato bhīṣmamanumānya prasādya ca। avabhartsya ca rādheyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥5-21-18॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; अनुमान्य (anumānya) - having respected; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having pleased; च (ca) - and; अवभर्त्स्य (avabhartsya) - having reproached; च (ca) - and; राधेयम् (rādheyam) - Radheya; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Dhritarashtra then, having respected and pleased Bhishma, and having reproached Radheya, said this speech.)
Then Dhritarashtra, after showing respect and pleasing Bhishma, and reproaching Radheya, spoke these words.
अस्मद्धितमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत्। पाण्डवानां हितं चैव सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ॥५-२१-१९॥
asmaddhitamidaṁ vākyaṁ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo'bravīt। pāṇḍavānāṁ hitaṁ caiva sarvasya jagatastathā ॥5-21-19॥
[अस्मत् (asmat) - our; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; इदम् (idam) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, said this statement for our welfare, and indeed for the welfare of the Pandavas and also for the entire world.)

चिन्तयित्वा तु पार्थेभ्यः प्रेषयिष्यामि सञ्जयम्। स भवान्प्रतियात्वद्य पाण्डवानेव माचिरम् ॥५-२१-२०॥
cintayitvā tu pārthebhyaḥ preṣayiṣyāmi sañjayam। sa bhavānpratiyātvadya pāṇḍavāneva māciram ॥5-21-20॥
[चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having considered; तु (tu) - but; पार्थेभ्यः (pārthebhyaḥ) - to the sons of Pṛthā; प्रेषयिष्यामि (preṣayiṣyāmi) - I will send; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sañjaya; सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रतियातु (pratiyātu) - should return; अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pāṇḍavas; एव (eva) - only; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(Having considered, I will send Sañjaya to the sons of Pṛthā. You should return to the Pāṇḍavas today without delay.)

स तं सत्कृत्य कौरव्यः प्रेषयामास पाण्डवान्। सभामध्ये समाहूय सञ्जयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥५-२१-२१॥
sa taṃ satkṛtya kauravyaḥ preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān। sabhāmadhye samāhūya sañjayaṃ vākyamabravīt ॥5-21-21॥
