Dhritarashtra spoke:
अनुक्तं यदि ते किञ्चिद्वाचा विदुर विद्यते। तन्मे शुश्रूषवे ब्रूहि विचित्राणि हि भाषसे ॥५-४१-१॥
anuktaṁ yadi te kiñcidvācā vidura vidyate। tanme śuśrūṣave brūhi vicitrāṇi hi bhāṣase ॥5-41-1॥
[अनुक्तं (anuktam) - unspoken; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; वाचा (vācā) - by words; विदुर (vidura) - O Vidura; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; शुश्रूषवे (śuśrūṣave) - to one who is eager to hear; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - wonderful things; हि (hi) - indeed; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak;]
(If there is something unspoken by your words, O Vidura, that exists, tell me, who is eager to hear, for indeed you speak wonderful things.)
If there is anything you have not yet spoken, O Vidura, please tell me, as I am eager to listen, for you indeed speak of wonderful things.
विदुर उवाच॥

धृतराष्ट्र कुमारो वै यः पुराणः सनातनः। सनत्सुजातः प्रोवाच मृत्युर्नास्तीति भारत ॥५-४१-२॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra kumāro vai yaḥ purāṇaḥ sanātanaḥ। sanatsu-jātaḥ provāca mṛtyur-nāstīti bhārata ॥5-41-2॥
[धृतराष्ट्र (dhṛtarāṣṭra) - Dhritarashtra; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - prince; वै (vai) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; सनत्सुजातः (sanatsu-jātaḥ) - Sanatsujata; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(The prince Dhritarashtra, who is ancient and eternal, indeed, Sanatsujata said, "Death is not, O Bharata.")
Sanatsujata, the eternal sage, told Dhritarashtra, "O Bharata, there is no such thing as death."
स ते गुह्यान्प्रकाशांश्च सर्वान्हृदयसंश्रयान्। प्रवक्ष्यति महाराज सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥५-४१-३॥
sa te guhyān prakāśāṃś ca sarvān hṛdaya-saṃśrayān। pravakṣyati mahārāja sarva-buddhimatāṃ varaḥ ॥5-41-3॥
[स (sa) - he; ते (te) - to you; गुह्यान् (guhyān) - secret; प्रकाशान् (prakāśān) - manifest; च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; हृदय (hṛdaya) - heart; संश्रयान् (saṃśrayān) - residing; प्रवक्ष्यति (pravakṣyati) - will tell; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सर्व (sarva) - all; बुद्धिमतां (buddhimatāṃ) - of the wise; वरः (varaḥ) - best;]
(He will tell you, O great king, the secrets and manifestations, all residing in the heart, best among all the wise.)
O great king, the best among all the wise, will reveal to you all the secrets and manifestations residing in the heart.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

किं त्वं न वेद तद्भूयो यन्मे ब्रूयात्सनातनः। त्वमेव विदुर ब्रूहि प्रज्ञाशेषोऽस्ति चेत्तव ॥५-४१-४॥
kiṁ tvaṁ na veda tadbhūyo yanme brūyātsanātanaḥ। tvameva vidura brūhi prajñāśeṣo'sti cettava ॥5-41-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; न (na) - not; वेद (veda) - know; तत् (tad) - that; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; यत् (yat) - which; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - would say; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; विदुर (vidura) - Vidura; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - wisdom; शेषः (śeṣaḥ) - remaining; अस्ति (asti) - is; चेत् (cet) - if; तव (tava) - your;]
(What you do not know, that again which the eternal would say to me, you indeed, Vidura, tell, if any wisdom remains with you.)
Vidura, if there is any wisdom left in you, tell me what you do not know, which the eternal would say to me again.
विदुर उवाच॥

शूद्रयोनावहं जातो नातोऽन्यद्वक्तुमुत्सहे। कुमारस्य तु या बुद्धिर्वेद तां शाश्वतीमहम् ॥५-४१-५॥
śūdrayonāvahaṃ jāto nāto'nyadvaktumutsahe। kumārasya tu yā buddhirveda tāṃ śāśvatīmaham ॥5-41-5॥
[शूद्रयोनौ (śūdrayonau) - in the womb of a Shudra; अहम् (aham) - I; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; न (na) - not; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यत् (anyat) - anything else; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the prince; तु (tu) - but; या (yā) - which; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intelligence; वेद (veda) - knows; ताम् (tām) - that; शाश्वतीम् (śāśvatīm) - eternal; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Born in the womb of a Shudra, I am not able to speak anything else. But I know the eternal intelligence of the prince.)
I was born in the womb of a Shudra and cannot say anything else. However, I am aware of the prince's eternal wisdom.
ब्राह्मीं हि योनिमापन्नः सुगुह्यमपि यो वदेत्। न तेन गर्ह्यो देवानां तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५-४१-६॥
brāhmīṃ hi yonimāpannaḥ suguḥyamapi yo vadet। na tena garhyo devānāṃ tasmādetadbravīmi te ॥5-41-6॥
[ब्राह्मीं (brāhmīṃ) - Brahminical; हि (hi) - indeed; योनिम् (yonim) - origin; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - attained; सुगुह्यम् (suguḥyam) - very secret; अपि (api) - even; यः (yaḥ) - who; वदेत् (vadet) - speaks; न (na) - not; तेन (tena) - by him; गर्ह्यः (garhyaḥ) - blameworthy; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; ते (te) - to you;]
(Indeed, one who has attained the Brahminical origin and speaks even of very secret things is not blameworthy by the gods; therefore, I say this to you.)

bravīhi vidura tvaṃ me purāṇaṃ taṃ sanātanam। kathametena dehena syādihaiva samāgamaḥ ॥5-41-7॥
[ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; विदुर (vidura) - Vidura; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मे (me) - to me; पुराणं (purāṇam) - ancient; तं (taṃ) - that; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; कथम् (katham) - how; एतेन (etena) - by this; देहेन (dehena) - body; स्यात् (syāt) - can be; इह (iha) - here; एव (eva) - indeed; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting;]
(Speak, Vidura, you to me that ancient eternal (knowledge). How by this body can there be indeed a meeting here?)
Vidura, please tell me about that ancient and eternal knowledge. How can there be a meeting here with this body?
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vaiśampāyana spoke:
चिन्तयामास विदुरस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम्। स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा दर्शयामास भारत ॥५-४१-८॥
cintayāmāsa vidurastamṛṣiṃ saṃśitavratam। sa ca taccintitaṃ jñātvā darśayāmāsa bhārata ॥5-41-8॥
[चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; संशितव्रतम् (saṃśitavratam) - of firm vows; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; चिन्तितम् (cintitam) - thought; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(Vidura thought of that sage of firm vows. And he, knowing that thought, showed (himself), O Bharata.)
Vidura contemplated the sage with firm vows, and the sage, aware of Vidura's thoughts, revealed himself, O Bharata.
स चैनं प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा। सुखोपविष्टं विश्रान्तमथैनं विदुरोऽब्रवीत् ॥५-४१-९॥
sa caiṇaṃ pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā। sukhopaviṣṭaṃ viśrāntamathainaṃ viduro'bravīt ॥5-41-9॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - as per the prescribed method; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act; सुखोपविष्टम् (sukhopaviṣṭam) - comfortably seated; विश्रान्तम् (viśrāntam) - rested; अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - this; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(He accepted this by the act as per the prescribed method. Then Vidura said this to him, who was comfortably seated and rested.)
He accepted the offering according to the prescribed rituals. Then Vidura spoke to him, who was seated comfortably and had taken rest.
भगवन्संशयः कश्चिद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य मानसे। यो न शक्यो मया वक्तुं तमस्मै वक्तुमर्हसि ॥५-४१-१०॥
bhagavansaṃśayaḥ kaściddhṛtarāṣṭrasya mānase। yo na śakyo mayā vaktuṃ tamasmai vaktumarhasi ॥5-41-10॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; मानसे (mānase) - in the mind; यः (yaḥ) - which; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; तम् (tam) - that; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(O Lord, there is some doubt in the mind of Dhritarashtra which I am not able to speak. You should speak that to him.)
O Lord, there is a doubt in Dhritarashtra's mind that I cannot express. You should convey it to him.
यं श्रुत्वायं मनुष्येन्द्रः सुखदुःखातिगो भवेत् ॥५-४१-१०॥
yaṁ śrutvāyaṁ manuṣyendraḥ sukhaduḥkhātigo bhavet ॥5-41-10॥
[यं (yaṁ) - which; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अयम् (ayam) - this; मनुष्येन्द्रः (manuṣyendraḥ) - king of men; सुखदुःखातिगः (sukhaduḥkhātigaḥ) - beyond pleasure and pain; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes;]
(Having heard this, the king of men becomes beyond pleasure and pain.)
Upon hearing this, the king transcends the dualities of pleasure and pain.
लाभालाभौ प्रियद्वेष्यौ यथैनं न जरान्तकौ। विषहेरन्भयामर्षौ क्षुत्पिपासे मदोद्भवौ ॥५-४१-११॥
lābhālābhau priyadveṣyau yathainaṃ na jarāntakau। viṣaheranbhayāmarṣau kṣutpipāse madodbhavau ॥5-41-11॥
[लाभालाभौ (lābhālābhau) - gain and loss; प्रियद्वेष्यौ (priyadveṣyau) - pleasant and unpleasant; यथा (yathā) - as; एनम् (enam) - this; न (na) - not; जरान्तकौ (jarāntakau) - old age and death; विषहेरन् (viṣaheran) - should endure; भयामर्षौ (bhayāmarṣau) - fear and anger; क्षुत्पिपासे (kṣutpipāse) - hunger and thirst; मदोद्भवौ (madodbhavau) - born of pride;]
(Gain and loss, pleasant and unpleasant, as old age and death do not affect this, one should endure fear and anger, hunger and thirst, born of pride.)
Just as old age and death do not affect a person, one should similarly endure gain and loss, the pleasant and unpleasant, fear and anger, hunger and thirst, all of which arise from pride.
अरतिश्चैव तन्द्री च कामक्रोधौ क्षयोदयौ ॥५-४१-११॥
aratiścaiva tandrī ca kāmakrodhau kṣayodayau ॥5-41-11॥
[अरति (arati) - discontent; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तन्द्री (tandrī) - laziness; च (ca) - and; काम (kāma) - desire; क्रोधौ (krodhau) - anger; क्षय (kṣaya) - decline; उदयौ (udayau) - rise;]
(Discontent and laziness, desire and anger, decline and rise.)
Discontent and laziness, as well as desire and anger, lead to both decline and rise.
