समवेतेषु सर्वेषु तेषु राजसु भारत। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥५-४८-१॥
samaveteṣu sarveṣu teṣu rājasu bhārata। duryodhanamidaṃ vākyaṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo'bravīt ॥5-48-1॥
[समवेतेषु (samaveteṣu) - assembled; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; तेषु (teṣu) - those; राजसु (rājasu) - kings; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(In the assembly of all those kings, O Bharata, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, said this speech to Duryodhana.)

बृहस्पतिश्चोशना च ब्रह्माणं पर्युपस्थितौ। मरुतश्च सहेन्द्रेण वसवश्च सहाश्विनौ ॥५-४८-२॥

नमस्कृत्वोपजग्मुस्ते लोकवृद्धं पितामहम्। परिवार्य च विश्वेशं पर्यासत दिवौकसः ॥५-४८-४॥

(Having saluted, they approached the elder of the world, the grandfather. Surrounding and sitting around the lord of the universe, the celestials.)
After offering their salutations, they approached the revered elder and grandfather of the worlds. The celestials then surrounded and sat around the lord of the universe.
तेषां मनश्च तेजश्चाप्याददानौ दिवौकसाम्। पूर्वदेवौ व्यतिक्रान्तौ नरनारायणावृषी ॥५-४८-५॥

बृहस्पतिश्च पप्रच्छ ब्राह्मणं काविमाविति। भवन्तं नोपतिष्ठेते तौ नः शंस पितामह ॥५-४८-६॥

यावेतौ पृथिवीं द्यां च भासयन्तौ तपस्विनौ। ज्वलन्तौ रोचमानौ च व्याप्यातीतौ महाबलौ ॥५-४८-७॥
yāvetau pṛthivīṃ dyāṃ ca bhāsayantau tapasvinau। jvalantau rocamānau ca vyāpyātītau mahābalau ॥5-48-7॥
[यावेतौ (yāvetau) - these two; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; द्यां (dyāṃ) - sky; च (ca) - and; भासयन्तौ (bhāsayantau) - illuminating; तपस्विनौ (tapasvinau) - ascetics; ज्वलन्तौ (jvalantau) - shining; रोचमानौ (rocamānau) - radiant; च (ca) - and; व्याप्यातीतौ (vyāpyātītau) - pervading; महाबलौ (mahābalau) - mighty;]
(These two ascetics, illuminating the earth and sky, shining and radiant, pervading, are mighty.)
These two mighty ascetics illuminate both the earth and the sky, shining brightly and radiantly, and their presence is all-pervading.
नरनारायणावेतौ लोकाल्लोकं समास्थितौ। ऊर्जितौ स्वेन तपसा महासत्त्वपराक्रमौ ॥५-४८-८॥
naranārāyaṇāvetau lokāllokaṃ samāsthitau। ūrjitau svena tapasā mahāsattvaparākramau ॥5-48-8॥
[नर (nara) - man; नारायणौ (nārāyaṇau) - Narayana; एतौ (etau) - these two; लोकात् (lokāt) - from the world; लोकं (lokam) - world; समास्थितौ (samāsthitau) - established; ऊर्जितौ (ūrjitau) - powerful; स्वेन (svena) - by own; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; महासत्त्व (mahāsattva) - great strength; पराक्रमौ (parākramau) - valourous;]
(These two, Nara and Narayana, established from world to world, are powerful by their own penance, possessing great strength and valour.)
Nara and Narayana, these two sages, are established across worlds, empowered by their own penance, and possess immense strength and courage.
एतौ हि कर्मणा लोकान्नन्दयामासतुर्ध्रुवौ। असुराणामभावाय देवगन्धर्वपूजितौ ॥५-४८-९॥
etau hi karmaṇā lokān nandayām āsatur dhruvau। asurāṇām abhāvāya deva-gandharva-pūjitau ॥5-48-9॥
[एतौ (etau) - these two; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; नन्दयामासतुः (nandayām āsatuḥ) - made happy; ध्रुवौ (dhruvau) - the two steadfast ones; असुराणाम् (asurāṇām) - of the demons; अभावाय (abhāvāya) - for the destruction; देवगन्धर्वपूजितौ (deva-gandharva-pūjitau) - worshipped by gods and celestial beings;]
(These two indeed, by their actions, made the worlds happy, the two steadfast ones, for the destruction of the demons, worshipped by gods and celestial beings.)
These two steadfast beings, through their actions, brought joy to the worlds and were revered by gods and celestial beings for the destruction of the demons.

जगाम शक्रस्तच्छ्रुत्वा यत्र तौ तेपतुस्तपः। सार्धं देवगणैः सर्वैर्बृहस्पतिपुरोगमैः ॥५-४८-१०॥
jagāma śakras tac chrutvā yatra tau tepatus tapaḥ। sārdhaṃ devagaṇaiḥ sarvair bṛhaspatipurogamaiḥ ॥5-48-10॥
[जगाम (jagāma) - went; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; यत्र (yatra) - where; तौ (tau) - those two; तेपतुः (tepatuḥ) - performed penance; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; सार्धम् (sārdham) - along with; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - with all the groups of gods; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; बृहस्पतिपुरोगमैः (bṛhaspatipurogamaiḥ) - led by Brihaspati;]
(Indra went there, having heard that, where those two performed penance, along with all the groups of gods led by Brihaspati.)
Upon hearing the news, Indra, accompanied by all the groups of gods led by Brihaspati, went to the place where the two were performing their penance.
तदा देवासुरे घोरे भये जाते दिवौकसाम्। अयाचत महात्मानौ नरनारायणौ वरम् ॥५-४८-११॥
tadā devāsure ghore bhaye jāte divaukasām। ayācata mahātmānau naranārāyaṇau varam ॥5-48-11॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; देवासुरे (devāsure) - gods and demons; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; भये (bhaye) - fear; जाते (jāte) - arose; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the inhabitants of heaven; अयाचत (ayācata) - requested; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - the great souls; नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Narayana; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(Then, when a terrible fear arose among the inhabitants of heaven, the great souls Nara and Narayana requested a boon.)

तावब्रूतां वृणीष्वेति तदा भरतसत्तम। अथैतावब्रवीच्छक्रः साह्यं नः क्रियतामिति ॥५-४८-१२॥
tāvabrūtāṃ vṛṇīṣveti tadā bharatasattama। athaitāvabravīcchakraḥ sāhyaṃ naḥ kriyatāmiti ॥5-48-12॥

(Those two said, "Choose," then, O best of the Bharatas. Then these two said, "Let help be done for us," said Indra.)

ततस्तौ शक्रमब्रूतां करिष्यावो यदिच्छसि। ताभ्यां च सहितः शक्रो विजिग्ये दैत्यदानवान् ॥५-४८-१३॥
tatastau śakramabrūtāṃ kariṣyāvo yadicchasi। tābhyāṃ ca sahitaḥ śakro vijigye daityadānavān ॥5-48-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; अब्रूताम् (abrūtām) - said; करिष्यावः (kariṣyāvaḥ) - we will do; यत् (yat) - what; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - with them; च (ca) - and; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; विजिग्ये (vijigye) - conquered; दैत्यदानवान् (daityadānavān) - demons and giants;]
(Then those two said to Indra, "We will do what you wish." Together with them, Indra conquered the demons and giants.)

नर इन्द्रस्य सङ्ग्रामे हत्वा शत्रून्परन्तपः। पौलोमान्कालखञ्जांश्च सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥५-४८-१४॥
nara indrasya saṅgrāme hatvā śatrūnparantapaḥ। paulomānkālakhañjāṃśca sahasrāṇi śatāni ca ॥5-48-14॥
[नर (nara) - man; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; पौलोमान् (paulomān) - Paulomas; कालखञ्जान् (kālakhañjān) - Kalakhanjas; च (ca) - and; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; च (ca) - and;]
(The man, scorcher of foes, having slain the enemies of Indra in battle, and the Paulomas and Kalakhanjas, thousands and hundreds.)
The warrior, who is a terror to his enemies, defeated the foes of Indra in battle, along with the Paulomas and Kalakhanjas, in their thousands and hundreds.
एष भ्रान्ते रथे तिष्ठन्भल्लेनापहरच्छिरः। जम्भस्य ग्रसमानस्य यज्ञमर्जुन आहवे ॥५-४८-१५॥
eṣa bhrānte rathe tiṣṭhanbhallenāpaharacchiraḥ। jambhasya grasamānasya yajñamarjuna āhave ॥5-48-15॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; भ्रान्ते (bhrānte) - in the confused; रथे (rathe) - chariot; तिष्ठन् (tiṣṭhan) - standing; भल्लेन (bhallena) - with an arrow; अपहरत् (apaharat) - took away; शिरः (śiraḥ) - head; जम्भस्य (jambhasya) - of Jambha; ग्रसमानस्य (grasamānasya) - devouring; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(This Arjuna, standing on the confused chariot, took away the head of Jambha with an arrow while he was devouring the sacrifice in battle.)
Arjuna, while standing on the chaotic chariot, severed the head of Jambha with an arrow as he was consuming the sacrifice during the battle.
एष पारे समुद्रस्य हिरण्यपुरमारुजत्। हत्वा षष्टिसहस्राणि निवातकवचान्रणे ॥५-४८-१६॥
eṣa pāre samudrasya hiraṇyapuramārujat। hatvā ṣaṣṭisahasrāṇi nivātakavacānraṇe ॥5-48-16॥
[एष (eṣa) - this one; पारे (pāre) - on the other side; समुद्रस्य (samudrasya) - of the ocean; हिरण्यपुरम् (hiraṇyapuram) - Hiranyapura; आरुजत् (ārūjat) - ascended; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; षष्टि (ṣaṣṭi) - sixty; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; निवातकवचान् (nivātakavacān) - Nivatakavachas; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(This one ascended Hiranyapura on the other side of the ocean, having slain sixty thousand Nivatakavachas in battle.)
He crossed to the other side of the ocean and ascended Hiranyapura, after defeating sixty thousand Nivatakavachas in battle.
एष देवान्सहेन्द्रेण जित्वा परपुरञ्जयः। अतर्पयन्महाबाहुरर्जुनो जातवेदसम् ॥ नारायणस्तथैवात्र भूयसोऽन्याञ्जघान ह ॥५-४८-१७॥
eṣa devānsahendreṇa jitvā parapurañjayaḥ। atarpayanmahābāhurarjuno jātavedasam ॥ nārāyaṇastathaivātra bhūyaso'nyāñjaghāna ha ॥5-48-17॥

(This one, having conquered the gods with Indra, the conqueror of enemy cities, mighty-armed Arjuna satisfied Agni. Similarly, Narayana here killed many others indeed.)

(Thus, see these two of great valor assembled: Vasudeva and Arjuna, the heroes united as great charioteers.)
Behold these two mighty warriors, Vasudeva and Arjuna, who have come together as great charioteers.
नरनारायणौ देवौ पूर्वदेवाविति श्रुतिः। अजेयौ मानुषे लोके सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥५-४८-१९॥
naranārāyaṇau devau pūrvadevāviti śrutiḥ। ajeyau mānuṣe loke sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ ॥5-48-19॥

(Nara and Narayana are gods, thus it is heard, ancient gods, invincible in the human world, even with Indra, by gods and demons.)

(This Narayana is Krishna, but Arjuna is remembered as a man. Narayana and man indeed are one essence made in two.)

(These two indeed attain the imperishable and eternal worlds by action. There, there only, they are born at the time of war again and again.)
These two, by their actions, attain the eternal and imperishable worlds. In those worlds, they are reborn at the time of war, repeatedly.
तस्मात्कर्मैव कर्तव्यमिति होवाच नारदः। एतद्धि सर्वमाचष्ट वृष्णिचक्रस्य वेदवित् ॥५-४८-२२॥
tasmātkarmaiva kartavyamiti hovāca nāradaḥ। etaddhi sarvamācaṣṭa vṛṣṇicakrasya vedavit ॥5-48-22॥

(What Bhishma, the best of the Bharatas, said, that should be done, O king. You should not act on the words of those desiring wealth.)
O King, you should follow what Bhishma, the best of the Bharatas, has advised. Do not heed the words of those who are driven by desire for wealth.
पुरा युद्धात्साधु मन्ये पाण्डवैः सह सङ्गमम्। यद्वाक्यमर्जुनेनोक्तं सञ्जयेन निवेदितम् ॥५-४८-४४॥
purā yuddhātsādhu manye pāṇḍavaiḥ saha saṅgamam। yadvākyamarjunenoktaṃ sañjayena niveditam ॥5-48-44॥

I believe that the meeting with the Pandavas after the battle was favorable, as the statement made by Arjuna was conveyed by Sanjaya.
सर्वं तदभिजानामि करिष्यति च पाण्डवः। न ह्यस्य त्रिषु लोकेषु सदृशोऽस्ति धनुर्धरः ॥५-४८-४५॥
sarvaṁ tadabhijānāmi kariṣyati ca pāṇḍavaḥ। na hyasya triṣu lokeṣu sadṛśo'sti dhanurdharaḥ ॥5-48-45॥

(I know all that, and Pāṇḍava will do it. Indeed, there is no archer equal to him in the three worlds.)
I am aware of everything, and Pāṇḍava will accomplish it. Truly, there is no archer like him in all the three worlds.
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यमर्थवद्द्रोणभीष्मयोः। ततः स सञ्जयं राजा पर्यपृच्छत पाण्डवम् ॥५-४८-४६॥
anādṛtya tu tadvākyamarthavaddroṇabhīṣmayoḥ। tataḥ sa sañjayaṃ rājā paryapṛcchata pāṇḍavam ॥5-48-46॥
[अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; तु (tu) - but; तद्वाक्यम् (tadvākyam) - those words; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; भीष्मयोः (bhīṣmayoḥ) - of Bhishma; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sanjaya; राजा (rājā) - the king; पर्यपृच्छत (paryapṛcchata) - inquired; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - about the Pandavas;]
(Disregarding those meaningful words of Drona and Bhishma, then he, the king, inquired Sanjaya about the Pandavas.)
Ignoring the meaningful advice of Drona and Bhishma, the king then asked Sanjaya about the Pandavas.
तदैव कुरवः सर्वे निराशा जीवितेऽभवन्। भीष्मद्रोणौ यदा राजा न सम्यगनुभाषते ॥५-४८-४७॥
tadaiva kuravaḥ sarve nirāśā jīvite'bhavan। bhīṣmadroṇau yadā rājā na samyaganubhāṣate ॥5-48-47॥
[तदैव (tadaiva) - then only; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निराशा (nirāśā) - despairing; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣmadroṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; यदा (yadā) - when; राजा (rājā) - the king; न (na) - not; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; अनुभाषते (anubhāṣate) - addresses;]
(Then only all the Kurus became despairing in life when the king does not properly address Bhishma and Drona.)
At that very moment, all the Kurus lost hope in life because the king failed to properly address Bhishma and Drona.
