पृच्छामि त्वां सञ्जय राजमध्ये; किमब्रवीद्वाक्यमदीनसत्त्वः। धनञ्जयस्तात युधां प्रणेता; दुरात्मनां जीवितच्छिन्महात्मा ॥५-४७-१॥
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ sañjaya rājamadhye; kimabravīdvākyamadīnasattvaḥ। dhanañjayastāta yudhāṃ praṇetā; durātmanāṃ jīvitacchinmahātmā ॥5-47-1॥

(I ask you, Sanjaya, in the midst of kings; what did the undepressed spirit say? Dhananjaya, O dear, the leader of battles; the destroyer of life of the wicked, the great soul.)

दुर्योधनो वाचमिमां शृणोतु; यदब्रवीदर्जुनो योत्स्यमानः। युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते महात्मा; धनञ्जयः शृण्वतः केशवस्य ॥५-४७-२॥
duryodhano vācimimāṃ śṛṇotu; yadabravīdarjuno yotsyamānaḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasyānumate mahātmā; dhanañjayaḥ śṛṇvataḥ keśavasya ॥5-47-2॥

(Let Duryodhana hear this speech; what Arjuna said while fighting. With the consent of Yudhishthira, the great soul Dhananjaya, hearing of Keshava.)
Let Duryodhana hear the words spoken by Arjuna during the battle. With Yudhishthira's consent, the noble Dhananjaya, in the presence of Keshava, listened.
अन्वत्रस्तो बाहुवीर्यं विदान; उपह्वरे वासुदेवस्य धीरः। अवोचन्मां योत्स्यमानः किरीटी; मध्ये ब्रूया धार्तराष्ट्रं कुरूणाम् ॥५-४७-३॥
anvatras to bāhuvīryaṃ vidāna; upahvare vāsudevasya dhīraḥ। avocan māṃ yotsyamānaḥ kirīṭī; madhye brūyā dhārtarāṣṭraṃ kurūṇām ॥5-47-3॥
[अन्वत्रस्तः (anvatras taḥ) - fearless; बाहुवीर्यम् (bāhuvīryam) - strength of arms; विदान (vidāna) - knowing; उपह्वरे (upahvare) - in the vicinity; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; धीरः (dhīraḥ) - wise; अवोचत् (avocat) - said; माम् (mām) - to me; योत्स्यमानः (yotsyamānaḥ) - about to fight; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a crown; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; धार्तराष्ट्रम् (dhārtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra's; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kuru;]
(Fearless, knowing the strength of arms, the wise one in the vicinity of Vāsudeva said to me, the one with a crown, about to fight, "In the midst, should say to Dhritarashtra's Kurus.")
The wise one, fearless and knowing the strength of arms, in the vicinity of Vāsudeva, said to me, the crowned one about to fight, "In the midst, convey this to the Kurus of Dhritarashtra."
ये वै राजानः पाण्डवायोधनाय; समानीताः शृण्वतां चापि तेषाम्। यथा समग्रं वचनं मयोक्तं; सहामात्यं श्रावयेथा नृपं तम् ॥५-४७-४॥
ye vai rājānaḥ pāṇḍavāyodhanāya; samānītāḥ śṛṇvatāṃ cāpi teṣām। yathā samagraṃ vacanaṃ mayoktaṃ; sahāmātyaṃ śrāvayethā nṛpaṃ tam ॥5-47-4॥
[ये (ye) - those who; वै (vai) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; पाण्डवायोधनाय (pāṇḍavāyodhanāya) - for the battle with the Pandavas; समानीताः (samānītāḥ) - assembled; शृण्वतां (śṛṇvatāṃ) - listening; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; यथा (yathā) - as; समग्रं (samagraṃ) - entire; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - speech; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; सहामात्यं (sahāmātyaṃ) - with ministers; श्रावयेथा (śrāvayethā) - you should make hear; नृपं (nṛpaṃ) - king; तम् (tam) - that;]
(Those kings who were assembled for the battle with the Pandavas, and also listening among them, as the entire speech was spoken by me, you should make that king hear it with the ministers.)
The kings who were gathered for the battle against the Pandavas, and who were listening, should be informed of the entire speech I delivered, along with their ministers.
यथा नूनं देवराजस्य देवाः; शुश्रूषन्ते वज्रहस्तस्य सर्वे। तथाशृण्वन्पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्च; किरीटिना वाचमुक्तां समर्थाम् ॥५-४७-५॥
yathā nūnaṃ devarājasya devāḥ; śuśrūṣante vajrahastasya sarve। tathāśṛṇvanpāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; kirīṭinā vācamuktāṃ samarthām ॥5-47-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - indeed; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of gods; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; शुश्रूषन्ते (śuśrūṣante) - serve; वज्रहस्तस्य (vajrahastasya) - of the one with the thunderbolt in hand; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तथा (tathā) - so; अशृण्वन् (aśṛṇvan) - listening; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; सृञ्जयाः (sṛñjayāḥ) - the Srinjayas; च (ca) - and; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by the crowned one; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; उक्ताम् (uktām) - spoken; समर्थाम् (samarthām) - capable;]
(As indeed all the gods serve the king of gods, the one with the thunderbolt in hand, so the Pandavas and the Srinjayas listened to the capable speech spoken by the crowned one.)
Just as all the gods serve Indra, the king of gods who wields the thunderbolt, so too did the Pandavas and the Srinjayas listen attentively to the powerful words spoken by Arjuna, the one with the crown.
इत्यब्रवीदर्जुनो योत्स्यमानो; गाण्डीवधन्वा लोहितपद्मनेत्रः। न चेद्राज्यं मुञ्चति धार्तराष्ट्रो; युधिष्ठिरस्याजमीढस्य राज्ञः ॥ अस्ति नूनं कर्म कृतं पुरस्ता; दनिर्विष्टं पापकं धार्तराष्ट्रैः ॥५-४७-६॥
ity abravīd arjuno yotsyamānaḥ; gāṇḍīvadhanvā lohitapadmanetraḥ। na ced rājyaṃ muñcati dhārtarāṣṭro; yudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍhasya rājñaḥ ॥ asti nūnaṃ karma kṛtaṃ purastā; danirviṣṭaṃ pāpakaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ ॥5-47-6॥
[इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; योत्स्यमानः (yotsyamānaḥ) - about to fight; गाण्डीवधन्वा (gāṇḍīvadhanvā) - the wielder of the Gandiva bow; लोहितपद्मनेत्रः (lohitapadmanetraḥ) - red-lotus-eyed; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhishthira; अजमीढस्य (ajamīḍhasya) - of the unblemished; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - king; अस्ति (asti) - there is; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; कर्म (karma) - action; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; पुरस्ता (purastā) - before; दनिर्विष्टम् (danirviṣṭam) - settled; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ) - by the sons of Dhritarashtra;]
(Thus spoke Arjuna, about to fight, the wielder of the Gandiva bow, red-lotus-eyed: 'If Dhritarashtra's son does not release the kingdom of King Yudhishthira, the unblemished, indeed, there is an action done before, settled as sinful by the sons of Dhritarashtra.')
Arjuna, ready for battle and wielding the Gandiva bow with eyes like red lotuses, declared: 'If the son of Dhritarashtra does not return the kingdom to the rightful King Yudhishthira, it is certain that a sinful act committed in the past by the sons of Dhritarashtra is now settled.'
येषां युद्धं भीमसेनार्जुनाभ्यां; तथाश्विभ्यां वासुदेवेन चैव। शैनेयेन ध्रुवमात्तायुधेन; धृष्टद्युम्नेनाथ शिखण्डिना च ॥ युधिष्ठिरेणेन्द्रकल्पेन चैव; योऽपध्यानान्निर्दहेद्गां दिवं च ॥५-४७-७॥
yeṣāṃ yuddhaṃ bhīmasenārjunābhyāṃ; tathāśvibhyāṃ vāsudevena caiva। śaineyena dhruvamāttāyudhena; dhṛṣṭadyumnenātha śikhaṇḍinā ca ॥ yudhiṣṭhireṇendrakalpena caiva; yo'padhyānānnirdahedgāṃ divaṃ ca ॥5-47-7॥
[येषां (yeṣāṃ) - whose; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; भीमसेनार्जुनाभ्यां (bhīmasenārjunābhyāṃ) - by Bhimasena and Arjuna; तथाश्विभ्यां (tathāśvibhyāṃ) - and also by the Ashvins; वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vasudeva; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; शैनेयेन (śaineyena) - by Satyaki; ध्रुवमात्तायुधेन (dhruvamāttāyudhena) - with firm weapons; धृष्टद्युम्नेन (dhṛṣṭadyumnena) - by Dhrishtadyumna; अथ (atha) - and; शिखण्डिना (śikhaṇḍinā) - by Shikhandi; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिरेण (yudhiṣṭhireṇa) - by Yudhishthira; इन्द्रकल्पेन (indrakalpena) - like Indra; चैव (caiva) - and indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; अपध्यानात् (apadhyānāt) - from distraction; निर्दहेत् (nirdahet) - would burn; गां (gāṃ) - the earth; दिवं (divaṃ) - the heaven; च (ca) - and;]
(Whose battle was fought by Bhimasena and Arjuna, and also by the Ashvins, by Vasudeva, indeed by Satyaki with firm weapons, by Dhrishtadyumna, and by Shikhandi; by Yudhishthira, like Indra, indeed who would burn the earth and the heaven from distraction.)
The battle, fought by Bhimasena, Arjuna, the Ashvins, Vasudeva, Satyaki, Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandi, and Yudhishthira, who was like Indra, was so intense that it could burn the earth and the heavens if distracted.
तैश्चेद्युद्धं मन्यते धार्तराष्ट्रो; निर्वृत्तोऽर्थः सकलः पाण्डवानाम्। मा तत्कार्षीः पाण्डवार्थाय हेतो; रुपैहि युद्धं यदि मन्यसे त्वम् ॥५-४७-८॥
taiś cedyuddhaṃ manyate dhārtarāṣṭro; nirvṛtto'rthaḥ sakalaḥ pāṇḍavānām। mā tatkārṣīḥ pāṇḍavārthāya heto; rupaihi yuddhaṃ yadi manyase tvam ॥5-47-8॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; चेत् (cet) - if; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; निर्वृत्तः (nirvṛttaḥ) - accomplished; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; सकलः (sakalaḥ) - entire; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; मा (mā) - do not; तत् (tat) - that; कार्षीः (kārṣīḥ) - do; पाण्डव-अर्थाय (pāṇḍava-arthāya) - for the sake of the Pandavas; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - for the reason; उपैहि (upaihi) - approach; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(If Dhritarashtra's son thinks that by them war is accomplished, the entire purpose of the Pandavas; do not do that for the sake of the Pandavas; approach war if you think.)
If Dhritarashtra's son believes that war is the means to fulfill the Pandavas' entire purpose, do not engage in it for the Pandavas' sake; instead, approach war if you deem it necessary.
यां तां वने दुःखशय्यामुवास; प्रव्राजितः पाण्डवो धर्मचारी। आशिष्यते दुःखतरामनर्था; मन्त्यां शय्यां धार्तराष्ट्रः परासुः ॥५-४७-९॥
yāṃ tāṃ vane duḥkhaśayyāmuvāsa; pravrājitaḥ pāṇḍavo dharmacārī। āśiṣyate duḥkhatārāmanarthā; mantyāṃ śayyāṃ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ parāsuḥ ॥5-47-9॥
[याम् (yām) - which; ताम् (tām) - that; वने (vane) - in the forest; दुःखशय्याम् (duḥkhaśayyām) - bed of sorrow; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; प्रव्राजितः (pravrājitaḥ) - exiled; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; धर्मचारी (dharmacārī) - righteous; आशिष्यते (āśiṣyate) - will rest; दुःखतराम् (duḥkhatārām) - more sorrowful; अनर्था (anarthā) - calamities; मन्त्याम् (mantyām) - in the mind; शय्याम् (śayyām) - bed; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhārtarāṣṭra; परासुः (parāsuḥ) - lifeless;]
(Which bed of sorrow in the forest the exiled, righteous Pāṇḍava dwelt; Dhārtarāṣṭra, lifeless, will rest on a more sorrowful bed of calamities in the mind.)
The righteous Pāṇḍava, who was exiled, lived on a sorrowful bed in the forest; Dhārtarāṣṭra, now lifeless, will find himself on a bed of even greater sorrow and calamity in his mind.
ह्रिया ज्ञानेन तपसा दमेन; क्रोधेनाथो धर्मगुप्त्या धनेन। अन्यायवृत्तः कुरुपाण्डवेया; नध्यातिष्ठद्धार्तराष्ट्रो दुरात्मा ॥५-४७-१०॥
hriyā jñānena tapasā damena; krodhenātho dharmaguptyā dhanena। anyāyavṛttaḥ kurupāṇḍaveyā; nadhyātiṣṭhaddhārtarāṣṭro durātmā ॥5-47-10॥
[ह्रिया (hriyā) - by modesty; ज्ञानेन (jñānena) - by knowledge; तपसा (tapasā) - by penance; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; क्रोधेन (krodhena) - by anger; अथ (atha) - then; धर्मगुप्त्या (dharmaguptyā) - by protection of righteousness; धनेन (dhanena) - by wealth; अन्यायवृत्तः (anyāyavṛttaḥ) - unjustly acting; कुरुपाण्डवेया (kurupāṇḍaveyā) - Kurus and Pandavas; न (na) - not; अध्यातिष्ठत् (adhyātiṣṭhat) - remained; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra's son; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul;]
(By modesty, knowledge, penance, self-restraint, anger, then by protection of righteousness, and wealth; unjustly acting, the Kurus and Pandavas did not remain, Dhritarashtra's wicked son.)

मायोपधः प्रणिधानार्जवाभ्यां; तपोदमाभ्यां धर्मगुप्त्या बलेन। सत्यं ब्रुवन्प्रीतियुक्त्यानृतेन; तितिक्षमाणः क्लिश्यमानोऽतिवेलम् ॥५-४७-११॥
māyopadhaḥ praṇidhānārjavābhyāṃ; tapodamābhyāṃ dharmaguptyā balena। satyaṃ bruvanprītiyuktyānṛtena; titikṣamāṇaḥ kliśyamāno'tivelam ॥5-47-11॥

यदा ज्येष्ठः पाण्डवः संशितात्मा; क्रोधं यत्तं वर्षपूगान्सुघोरम्। अवस्रष्टा कुरुषूद्वृत्तचेता; स्तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥५-४७-१२॥
yadā jyeṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ saṃśitātmā; krodhaṃ yattaṃ varṣapūgānsughoram। avasraṣṭā kuruṣūdvṛttacetā; stadā yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat ॥5-47-12॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; संशितात्मा (saṃśitātmā) - firm-minded; क्रोधं (krodhaṃ) - anger; यत्तं (yattaṃ) - controlled; वर्षपूगान् (varṣapūgān) - for many years; सुघोरम् (sughoram) - very terrible; अवस्रष्टा (avasraṣṭā) - will unleash; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - on the Kuru; उद्वृत्तचेता (udvṛttacetā) - with agitated mind; तदा (tadā) - then; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - war; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhārtarāṣṭra; अन्वतप्स्यत् (anvatapsyat) - will regret;]
(When the eldest Pāṇḍava, firm-minded, unleashes the very terrible anger controlled for many years on the Kuru with an agitated mind, then Dhārtarāṣṭra will regret the war.)
When the firm-minded eldest Pāṇḍava releases his long-controlled and terrible anger upon the Kuru, Dhārtarāṣṭra will regret the war.
कृष्णवर्त्मेव ज्वलितः समिद्धो; यथा दहेत्कक्षमग्निर्निदाघे। एवं दग्धा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सेनां; युधिष्ठिरः क्रोधदीप्तोऽनुवीक्ष्य ॥५-४७-१३॥
kṛṣṇavartmeva jvalitaḥ samiddho; yathā dahetkakṣamagniḥnidāghe। evaṃ dagdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya senāṃ; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ krodhadīpto'nuvīkṣya ॥5-47-13॥
[कृष्णवर्त्मेव (kṛṣṇavartmeva) - like the path of Krishna; ज्वलितः (jvalitaḥ) - blazing; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; यथा (yathā) - as; दहेत् (dahet) - would burn; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - the forest; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; निदाघे (nidāghe) - in summer; एवम् (evam) - thus; दग्धा (dagdhā) - burned; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's; सेनां (senāṃ) - army; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; क्रोधदीप्तः (krodhadīptaḥ) - inflamed with anger; अनुवीक्ष्य (anuvīkṣya) - having seen;]
(Like the path of Krishna, blazing and kindled, as fire would burn the forest in summer, thus Yudhishthira, inflamed with anger, having seen, burned the army of Dhritarashtra.)
Yudhishthira, inflamed with anger like a blazing fire in summer, observed and destroyed the army of Dhritarashtra, just as a fire would consume a forest.
यदा द्रष्टा भीमसेनं रणस्थं; गदाहस्तं क्रोधविषं वमन्तम्। दुर्मर्षणं पाण्डवं भीमवेगं; तदा युद्धं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽन्वतप्स्यत् ॥५-४७-१४॥
yadā draṣṭā bhīmasenaṃ raṇasthaṃ; gadāhastaṃ krodhaviṣaṃ vamantam। durmarṣaṇaṃ pāṇḍavaṃ bhīmavegaṃ; tadā yuddhaṃ dhārtarāṣṭro'nvatapsyat ॥5-47-14॥
