वनं प्रव्राजितान्पार्थान्यदायान्मधुसूदनः। महता बलचक्रेण परराष्ट्रावमर्दिना ॥५-५४-२॥

ते युधिष्ठिरमासीनमजिनैः प्रतिवासितम्। कृष्णप्रधानाः संहत्य पर्युपासन्त भारत ॥५-५४-५॥
te yudhiṣṭhiram āsīnam ajinaiḥ prativāsitam। kṛṣṇapradhānāḥ saṃhatya paryupāsanta bhārata ॥5-54-5॥

प्रत्यादानं च राज्यस्य कार्यमूचुर्नराधिपाः। भवतः सानुबन्धस्य समुच्छेदं चिकीर्षवः ॥५-५४-६॥

(The kings said that the return of the kingdom is a duty, desiring the destruction of you and your followers.)

श्रुत्वा चैतन्मयोक्तास्तु भीष्मद्रोणकृपास्तदा। ज्ञातिक्षयभयाद्राजन्भीतेन भरतर्षभ ॥५-५४-७॥

(Having heard this spoken by me, Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa, then out of fear of the destruction of kinsmen, O king, O best of the Bharatas, were fearful.)
Upon hearing these words from me, Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa were filled with fear, O king, dreading the destruction of their kinsmen, O best of the Bharatas.
न ते स्थास्यन्ति समये पाण्डवा इति मे मतिः। समुच्छेदं हि नः कृत्स्नं वासुदेवश्चिकीर्षति ॥५-५४-८॥
na te sthāsyanti samaye pāṇḍavā iti me matiḥ। samucchedaṃ hi naḥ kṛtsnaṃ vāsudevaścikīrṣati ॥5-54-8॥

(The Pāṇḍavas will not stand at the time, thus is my opinion. Indeed, Vāsudeva intends our complete destruction.)
In my opinion, the Pāṇḍavas will not be able to stand when the time comes. Vāsudeva indeed intends to completely destroy us.
ऋते च विदुरं सर्वे यूयं वध्या महात्मनः। धृतराष्ट्रश्च धर्मज्ञो न वध्यः कुरुसत्तमः ॥५-५४-९॥
ṛte ca viduraṃ sarve yūyaṃ vadhyā mahātmanaḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraśca dharmajño na vadhyaḥ kurusattamaḥ ॥5-54-9॥

(Except for Vidura, all of you great-souled ones are to be killed. Dhritarashtra, the knower of dharma, is not to be killed, O best of the Kurus.)

समुच्छेदं च कृत्स्नं नः कृत्वा तात जनार्दनः। एकराज्यं कुरूणां स्म चिकीर्षति युधिष्ठिरे ॥५-५४-१०॥
samucchedaṁ ca kṛtsnaṁ naḥ kṛtvā tāta janārdanaḥ। ekarājyaṁ kurūṇāṁ sma cikīrṣati yudhiṣṭhire ॥5-54-10॥

(Having completely destroyed us, O father, Janardana desires to establish one kingdom of the Kurus in Yudhishthira.)
O father, Janardana has completely destroyed us and now desires to establish a unified kingdom of the Kurus under Yudhishthira.
तत्र किं प्राप्तकालं नः प्रणिपातः पलायनम्। प्राणान्वा सम्परित्यज्य प्रतियुध्यामहे परान् ॥५-५४-११॥
tatra kiṃ prāptakālaṃ naḥ praṇipātaḥ palāyanam। prāṇānvā samparityajya pratiyudhyāmahe parān ॥5-54-11॥

(There, what is the appropriate time for us: surrender, retreat, or completely abandoning lives, we fight back the enemies.)

प्रतियुद्धे तु नियतः स्यादस्माकं पराजयः। युधिष्ठिरस्य सर्वे हि पार्थिवा वशवर्तिनः ॥५-५४-१२॥
pratiyuddhe tu niyataḥ syādasmākaṃ parājayaḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasya sarve hi pārthivā vaśavartinaḥ ॥5-54-12॥

प्रणिपाते तु दोषोऽस्ति बन्धूनां शाश्वतीः समाः। पितरं त्वेव शोचामि प्रज्ञानेत्रं जनेश्वरम् ॥ मत्कृते दुःखमापन्नं क्लेशं प्राप्तमनन्तकम् ॥५-५४-१४॥
praṇipāte tu doṣo'sti bandhūnāṃ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ। pitaraṃ tveva śocāmi prajñānetraṃ janeśvaram ॥ matkṛte duḥkhamāpannaṃ kleśaṃ prāptamanantakam ॥5-54-14॥
[प्रणिपाते (praṇipāte) - in prostration; तु (tu) - but; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; अस्ति (asti) - is; बन्धूनाम् (bandhūnām) - of relatives; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; प्रज्ञानेत्रम् (prajñānetram) - wise leader; जनेश्वरम् (janeśvaram) - lord of people; मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; आपन्नम् (āpannam) - obtained; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - trouble; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless;]
(In prostration, there is a fault of relatives for eternal years. But I grieve for my father, the wise leader, the lord of people. For my sake, sorrow and endless trouble have been obtained.)
In bowing down, there is a fault that lasts for eternal years among relatives. However, I mourn my father, the wise leader and lord of the people, who has suffered endless sorrow and trouble because of me.
कृतं हि तव पुत्रैश्च परेषामवरोधनम्। मत्प्रियार्थं पुरैवैतद्विदितं ते नरोत्तम ॥५-५४-१५॥
kṛtaṃ hi tava putraiśca pareṣāmavarodhanam। matpriyārthaṃ puraivaitadviditaṃ te narottama ॥5-54-15॥

(Indeed, the obstruction of others has been done by your sons for the sake of pleasing me; this was known to you before, O best of men.)
O best of men, your sons have indeed obstructed others for my sake; you were aware of this beforehand.
ते राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य सामात्यस्य महारथाः। वैरं प्रतिकरिष्यन्ति कुलोच्छेदेन पाण्डवाः ॥५-५४-१६॥
te rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya sāmātyasya mahārathāḥ। vairaṃ pratikariṣyanti kulocchedena pāṇḍavāḥ ॥5-54-16॥
[ते (te) - they; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - Dhritarashtra's; सामात्यस्य (sāmātyasya) - with ministers; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; वैरं (vairaṃ) - enmity; प्रतिकरिष्यन्ति (pratikariṣyanti) - will counteract; कुलोच्छेदेन (kulocchedena) - by exterminating the family; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
(They, the great warriors of King Dhritarashtra with ministers, will counteract the enmity by exterminating the family, the Pandavas.)

ततो द्रोणोऽब्रवीद्भीष्मः कृपो द्रौणिश्च भारत। मत्वा मां महतीं चिन्तामास्थितं व्यथितेन्द्रियम् ॥५-५४-१७॥
tato droṇo'bravīdbhīṣmaḥ kṛpo drauṇiśca bhārata। matvā māṃ mahatīṃ cintāmāsthitaṃ vyathitendriyam ॥5-54-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drauṇi; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; माम् (mām) - me; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - anxiety; आस्थितम् (āsthitam) - situated; व्यथितेन्द्रियम् (vyathitendriyam) - disturbed senses;]
(Then Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Kṛpa, and Drauṇi, O Bhārata, thinking me to be in great anxiety with disturbed senses, said:)

अभिद्रुग्धाः परे चेन्नो न भेतव्यं परन्तप। असमर्थाः परे जेतुमस्मान्युधि जनेश्वर ॥५-५४-१८॥
abhidrugdhāḥ pare cenno na bhetavyaṃ parantapa। asamarthāḥ pare jetumasmānyudhi janeśvara ॥5-54-18॥

(If others are angered, O scorcher of foes, we should not be afraid. Others are incapable of conquering us in battle, O lord of people.)

एकैकशः समर्थाः स्मो विजेतुं सर्वपार्थिवान्। आगच्छन्तु विनेष्यामो दर्पमेषां शितैः शरैः ॥५-५४-१९॥
ekaikaśaḥ samarthāḥ smo vijetuṃ sarvapārthivān। āgacchantu vineṣyāmo darpameṣāṃ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥5-54-19॥
[एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - one by one; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; स्मः (smaḥ) - we are; विजेतुम् (vijetuṃ) - to conquer; सर्वपार्थिवान् (sarvapārthivān) - all kings; आगच्छन्तु (āgacchantu) - let them come; विनेष्यामः (vineṣyāmaḥ) - we shall remove; दर्पम् (darpam) - pride; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(One by one, we are capable of conquering all kings. Let them come; we shall remove the pride of these with sharp arrows.)
We are capable of defeating each king individually. Let them come; we will shatter their pride with our sharp arrows.
पुरैकेन हि भीष्मेण विजिताः सर्वपार्थिवाः। मृते पितर्यभिक्रुद्धो रथेनैकेन भारत ॥५-५४-२०॥
puraikena hi bhīṣmeṇa vijitāḥ sarvapārthivāḥ। mṛte pitaryabhikruddho rathenaikena bhārata ॥5-54-20॥

(Formerly, indeed, all the kings were conquered by one Bhishma. After the death of the father, O Bharata, one became angry with the chariot.)

जघान सुबहूंस्तेषां संरब्धः कुरुसत्तमः। ततस्ते शरणं जग्मुर्देवव्रतमिमं भयात् ॥५-५४-२१॥
jaghāna subahūṃsteṣāṃ saṃrabdhaḥ kurusattamaḥ। tataste śaraṇaṃ jagmurdevavratamimaṃ bhayāt ॥5-54-21॥

(The enraged best of the Kurus killed many of them. Then, out of fear, they went to this Bhishma for refuge.)

अक्षौहिण्यो हि मे राजन्दशैका च समाहृताः। न्यूनाः परेषां सप्तैव कस्मान्मे स्यात्पराजयः ॥५-५४-६२॥
akṣauhiṇyo hi me rājandaśaikā ca samāhṛtāḥ। nyūnāḥ pareṣāṃ saptaiva kasmānme syātparājayaḥ ॥5-54-62॥
[अक्षौहिण्यः (akṣauhiṇyaḥ) - army divisions; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दश (daśa) - ten; एकाः (ekāḥ) - one; च (ca) - and; समाहृताः (samāhṛtāḥ) - assembled; न्यूनाः (nyūnāḥ) - lesser; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; सप्त (sapta) - seven; एव (eva) - only; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; मे (me) - my; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; पराजयः (parājayaḥ) - defeat;]
(Indeed, O king, my eleven army divisions are assembled. They are only seven less than others, why would my defeat be?)
O king, I have assembled eleven divisions of army. They are only seven less than those of others, so why should I face defeat?
बलं त्रिगुणतो हीनं योध्यं प्राह बृहस्पतिः। परेभ्यस्त्रिगुणा चेयं मम राजन्ननीकिनी ॥५-५४-६३॥
balaṁ triguṇato hīnaṁ yodhyaṁ prāha bṛhaspatiḥ। parebhyastriguṇā ceyaṁ mama rājannanīkinī ॥5-54-63॥
[बलम् (balam) - strength; त्रिगुणतः (triguṇataḥ) - three times; हीनम् (hīnam) - less; योध्यम् (yodhyam) - to be fought; प्राह (prāha) - said; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Brihaspati; परेभ्यः (parebhyaḥ) - than others; त्रिगुणा (triguṇā) - three times; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this; मम (mama) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनीकिनी (anīkinī) - army;]
(Brihaspati said, "The strength is three times less to be fought than others, and this army of mine, O king, is three times.")
Brihaspati said, "The strength is three times less than others, and this army of mine, O king, is three times stronger."
गुणहीनं परेषां च बहु पश्यामि भारत। गुणोदयं बहुगुणमात्मनश्च विशां पते ॥५-५४-६४॥
guṇahīnaṃ pareṣāṃ ca bahu paśyāmi bhārata। guṇodayaṃ bahuguṇamātmanaśca viśāṃ pate ॥5-54-64॥
[गुणहीनं (guṇahīnaṃ) - without qualities; परेषां (pareṣāṃ) - of others; च (ca) - and; बहु (bahu) - much; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; गुणोदयं (guṇodayaṃ) - rise of qualities; बहुगुणम (bahuguṇam) - many qualities; आत्मनश्च (ātmanaśca) - of oneself and; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(I see much lack of qualities in others, O Bharata. The rise of many qualities in oneself and, O lord of the people.)
O Bharata, I observe many lacking qualities in others, but the rise of many qualities in oneself, O lord of the people.
एतत्सर्वं समाज्ञाय बलाग्र्यं मम भारत। न्यूनतां पाण्डवानां च न मोहं गन्तुमर्हसि ॥५-५४-६५॥
etatsarvaṁ samājñāya balāgryaṁ mama bhārata। nyūnatāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca na mohaṁ gantum arhasi ॥5-54-65॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; समाज्ञाय (samājñāya) - having understood; बलाग्र्यम् (balāgryam) - foremost in strength; मम (mama) - my; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न्यूनताम् (nyūnatām) - deficiency; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; मोहम् (moham) - delusion; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(Having understood all this, my foremost strength, O Bhārata, and the deficiency of the Pāṇḍavas, you should not go into delusion.)
O Bhārata, having comprehended all this, including my supreme strength and the shortcomings of the Pāṇḍavas, you should not fall into delusion.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इत्युक्त्वा सञ्जयं भूयः पर्यपृच्छत भारत। विधित्सुः प्राप्तकालानि ज्ञात्वा परपुरञ्जयः ॥५-५४-६६॥
ityuktvā sañjayaṃ bhūyaḥ paryapṛcchata bhārata। vidhitsuḥ prāptakālāni jñātvā parapurañjayaḥ ॥5-54-66॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - to Sañjaya; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; पर्यपृच्छत (paryapṛcchata) - asked; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; विधित्सुः (vidhitsuḥ) - intending to know; प्राप्तकालानि (prāptakālāni) - appropriate times; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - the conqueror of enemy cities;]
(Thus, having spoken to Sañjaya again, O descendant of Bharata, the conqueror of enemy cities, intending to know, asked about the appropriate times, having known them.)
After speaking to Sañjaya once more, the conqueror of enemy cities, eager to understand, inquired about the right moments, O descendant of Bharata.
