evam etan mahārāja yathā vadasi bhārata। yuddhe vināśaḥ kṣatrasya gāṇḍīvena pradṛśyate ॥5-53-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; यथा (yathā) - as; वदसि (vadasi) - you say; भारत (bhārata) - O descendant of Bharata; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; क्षत्रस्य (kṣatrasya) - of the warriors; गाण्डीवेन (gāṇḍīvena) - by the bow Gandiva; प्रदृश्यते (pradṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Thus, O great king, as you say, O descendant of Bharata, the destruction of the warriors in battle is seen by the bow Gandiva.)

इदं तु नाभिजानामि तव धीरस्य नित्यशः। यत्पुत्रवशमागच्छेः सत्त्वज्ञः सव्यसाचिनः ॥५-५३-२॥
idaṃ tu nābhijānāmi tava dhīrasya nityaśaḥ। yatputravaśamāgaccheḥ sattvajñaḥ savyasācinaḥ ॥5-53-2॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - I know; तव (tava) - your; धीरस्य (dhīrasya) - of the wise; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; यत् (yat) - that; पुत्रवशम् (putravaśam) - under the control of the son; आगच्छेः (āgaccheḥ) - you would come; सत्त्वज्ञः (sattvajñaḥ) - knower of the truth; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Arjuna;]
(But I do not know this of you, the wise one, always: that you would come under the control of the son, O knower of the truth, Arjuna.)
However, I am unaware of this about you, the wise one, that you would always come under the influence of your son, O knower of the truth, Arjuna.
नैष कालो महाराज तव शश्वत्कृतागसः। त्वया ह्येवादितः पार्था निकृता भरतर्षभ ॥५-५३-३॥
naiṣa kālo mahārāja tava śaśvatkṛtāgasaḥ। tvayā hyevāditaḥ pārthā nikṛtā bharatarṣabha ॥5-53-3॥
[नैष (naiṣa) - this; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; तव (tava) - your; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - eternal; कृतागसः (kṛtāgasaḥ) - sinner; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; एव (eva) - certainly; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - sons of Pritha; निकृताः (nikṛtāḥ) - deceived; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(This is not the time, O great king, for your eternal sin. Indeed, from the beginning, the sons of Pritha were deceived by you, O bull among the Bharatas.)

pitā śreṣṭhaḥ suhṛdyaśca samyakpraṇihitātmavān। āstheyaṃ hi hitaṃ tena na drogdhā gururucyate ॥5-53-4॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - excellent; सुहृद्यः (suhṛdyaḥ) - friendly; च (ca) - and; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; प्रणिहित (praṇihita) - directed; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed; आस्थेयं (āstheyaṃ) - should be trusted; हि (hi) - indeed; हितं (hitaṃ) - beneficial; तेन (tena) - by him; न (na) - not; द्रोग्धा (drogdhā) - deceiver; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(The father, who is excellent and friendly, properly directed and self-possessed, should indeed be trusted as beneficial by him; not a deceiver, he is called a teacher.)

(Having heard 'This is won, this is gained', you smile like a prince at the time of gambling, O great king, indeed, at the defeated ones.)
Upon hearing 'This is won, this is gained', O great king, you smiled like a prince during the gambling session at those who were defeated.
परुषाण्युच्यमानान्स्म पुरा पार्थानुपेक्षसे। कृत्स्नं राज्यं जयन्तीति प्रपातं नानुपश्यसि ॥५-५३-६॥
paruṣāṇy ucyamānāni sma purā pārtha anupekṣase। kṛtsnaṃ rājyaṃ jayantīti prapātaṃ nānupaśyasi ॥5-53-6॥
[परुषाणि (paruṣāṇi) - harsh words; उच्यमानानि (ucyamānāni) - being spoken; स्म (sma) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; अनुपेक्षसे (anupekṣase) - you ignore; कृत्स्नं (kṛtsnaṃ) - entire; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; जयन्ति (jayanti) - they conquer; इति (iti) - thus; प्रपातम् (prapātam) - precipice; न (na) - not; अनुपश्यसि (anupaśyasi) - you see;]
(You ignore the harsh words being spoken, O son of Pritha, as if you do not see the entire kingdom conquering the precipice.)
O son of Pritha, you are ignoring the harsh words spoken in the past, not realizing that the entire kingdom is on the verge of being conquered.
पित्र्यं राज्यं महाराज कुरवस्ते सजाङ्गलाः। अथ वीरैर्जितां भूमिमखिलां प्रत्यपद्यथाः ॥५-५३-७॥
pitryaṃ rājyaṃ mahārāja kuravaste sajāṅgalāḥ। atha vīrairjitāṃ bhūmimakhilāṃ pratyapadyathāḥ ॥5-53-7॥
[पित्र्यं (pitryaṃ) - ancestral; राज्यं (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; ते (te) - they; सजाङ्गलाः (sajāṅgalāḥ) - with the forest; अथ (atha) - then; वीरैः (vīraiḥ) - by heroes; जितां (jitāṃ) - conquered; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - land; अखिलां (akhilāṃ) - entire; प्रत्यपद्यथाः (pratyapadyathāḥ) - you obtained;]
(The Kurus, with the forest, O great king, then obtained the entire land conquered by heroes.)

बाहुवीर्यार्जिता भूमिस्तव पार्थैर्निवेदिता। मयेदं कृतमित्येव मन्यसे राजसत्तम ॥५-५३-८॥
bāhuvīryārjitā bhūmistava pārthairniveditā। mayedaṃ kṛtamityeva manyase rājasattama ॥5-53-8॥
[बाहु (bāhu) - arm; वीर्य (vīrya) - strength; अर्जिता (arjitā) - acquired; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - land; तव (tava) - your; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the sons of Pṛthā; निवेदिता (niveditā) - offered; मया (mayā) - by me; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings;]
(The land acquired by the strength of arms has been offered to you by the sons of Pṛthā. You think, O best of kings, that this has been done by me.)
The land, gained through the valor of arms, has been presented to you by the sons of Pṛthā. However, you believe, O noble king, that this achievement is solely mine.
ग्रस्तान्गन्धर्वराजेन मज्जतो ह्यप्लवेऽम्भसि। आनिनाय पुनः पार्थः पुत्रांस्ते राजसत्तम ॥५-५३-९॥
grastān gandharvarājena majjato hy aplave 'mbhasi। ānināya punaḥ pārthaḥ putrāṁs te rājasattama ॥5-53-9॥
[ग्रस्तान् (grastān) - seized; गन्धर्वराजेन (gandharvarājena) - by the king of Gandharvas; मज्जतः (majjataḥ) - drowning; हि (hi) - indeed; अप्लवे (aplave) - without a boat; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in water; आनिनाय (ānināya) - brought back; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; ते (te) - your; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings;]
(Seized by the king of Gandharvas, drowning indeed without a boat in water, Arjuna brought back your sons again, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, your sons, who were seized by the king of Gandharvas and were drowning in the water without a boat, were brought back by Arjuna.
कुमारवच्च स्मयसे द्यूते विनिकृतेषु यत्। पाण्डवेषु वनं राजन्प्रव्रजत्सु पुनः पुनः ॥५-५३-१०॥
kumāravacca smayase dyūte vinikṛteṣu yat। pāṇḍaveṣu vanaṃ rājanpravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-53-10॥
[कुमारवत् (kumāravat) - like a boy; च (ca) - and; स्मयसे (smayase) - you smile; द्यूते (dyūte) - in the game; विनिकृतेषु (vinikṛteṣu) - when defeated; यत् (yat) - because; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pandavas; वनं (vanaṃ) - to the forest; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रव्रजत्सु (pravrajatsu) - when departing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Like a boy, you smile in the game when defeated, because among the Pandavas, O king, when departing to the forest again and again.)
O king, you smile like a boy when defeated in the game, as the Pandavas depart to the forest repeatedly.
प्रवर्षतः शरव्रातानर्जुनस्य शितान्बहून्। अप्यर्णवा विशुष्येयुः किं पुनर्मांसयोनयः ॥५-५३-११॥
pravarṣataḥ śaravrātānarjunasya śitānbahūn। apyarṇavā viśuṣyeyuḥ kiṃ punarmāṃsayonayaḥ ॥5-53-11॥
[प्रवर्षतः (pravarṣataḥ) - raining; शरव्रातान् (śaravrātān) - arrows; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; शितान् (śitān) - sharp; बहून् (bahūn) - many; अपि (api) - even; अर्णवाः (arṇavāḥ) - oceans; विशुष्येयुः (viśuṣyeyuḥ) - would dry up; किं (kiṃ) - what; पुनः (punar) - then; मांसयोनयः (māṃsayonayaḥ) - creatures of flesh;]
(Raining many sharp arrows of Arjuna; even oceans would dry up, what then of creatures of flesh?)
As Arjuna rains down many sharp arrows, even the oceans would dry up, let alone creatures of flesh.
अस्यतां फल्गुनः श्रेष्ठो गाण्डीवं धनुषां वरम्। केशवः सर्वभूतानां चक्राणां च सुदर्शनम् ॥५-५३-१२॥
asyatāṁ phalgunaḥ śreṣṭho gāṇḍīvaṁ dhanuṣāṁ varam। keśavaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ cakrāṇāṁ ca sudarśanam ॥5-53-12॥
[अस्यतां (asyatāṁ) - let it be thrown; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Arjuna; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; गाण्डीवम् (gāṇḍīvam) - Gandiva bow; धनुषाम् (dhanuṣām) - of bows; वरम् (varam) - the best; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Krishna; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; चक्राणाम् (cakrāṇām) - of discs; च (ca) - and; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - Sudarshana.;]
(Let Arjuna, the best of the wielders of the Gandiva bow, and Krishna, the lord of all beings, wield the Sudarshana discus.)

vānaro rocamānaśca ketuḥ ketumatāṃ varaḥ। evametāni saratho vahañśvetahayo raṇe ॥ kṣapayiṣyati no rājankālacakramivodyatam ॥5-53-13॥
[वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; रोचमानः (rocamānaḥ) - shining; च (ca) - and; केतुः (ketuḥ) - banner; केतुमताम् (ketumatām) - of the illustrious; वरः (varaḥ) - best; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतानि (etāni) - these; सरथः (sarathaḥ) - with chariot; वहन् (vahan) - carrying; श्वेतहयः (śvetahayaḥ) - white horses; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; क्षपयिष्यति (kṣapayiṣyati) - will destroy; नः (naḥ) - our; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कालचक्रम् (kālacakram) - wheel of time; इव (iva) - like; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - raised;]
(The monkey, shining and the best of the illustrious, thus carrying these with the chariot and white horses in battle, will destroy our (enemies), O king, like the raised wheel of time.)

तस्याद्य वसुधा राजन्निखिला भरतर्षभ। यस्य भीमार्जुनौ योधौ स राजा राजसत्तम ॥५-५३-१४॥
tasyādya vasudhā rājannikhilā bharatarṣabha। yasya bhīmārjunau yodhau sa rājā rājasattama ॥5-53-14॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अद्य (adya) - today; वसुधा (vasudhā) - earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निखिला (nikhilā) - entire; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - best of the Bharatas; यस्य (yasya) - whose; भीमार्जुनौ (bhīmārjunau) - Bhima and Arjuna; योधौ (yodhau) - warriors; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - best of kings;]
(Today, O king, the entire earth is his, O best of the Bharatas, whose warriors are Bhima and Arjuna; he is the king, the best of kings.)

तथा भीमहतप्रायां मज्जन्तीं तव वाहिनीम्। दुर्योधनमुखा दृष्ट्वा क्षयं यास्यन्ति कौरवाः ॥५-५३-१५॥
tathā bhīmahataprāyāṃ majjantīṃ tava vāhinīm। duryodhanamukhā dṛṣṭvā kṣayaṃ yāsyanti kauravāḥ ॥5-53-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; भीमहतप्रायां (bhīmahataprāyāṃ) - slain by Bhima; मज्जन्तीं (majjantīṃ) - sinking; तव (tava) - your; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army; दुर्योधनमुखा (duryodhanamukhā) - headed by Duryodhana; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - Kauravas;]
(Thus, seeing your army, mostly slain by Bhima, sinking, the Kauravas headed by Duryodhana will go to destruction.)

(Indeed, O lord, your sons and the kings who are followers will not obtain victory out of fear of Bhima, O great king.)
O great king, your sons and the kings who follow them will not achieve victory because they are afraid of Bhima, O lord.
मत्स्यास्त्वामद्य नार्चन्ति पाञ्चालाश्च सकेकयाः। शाल्वेयाः शूरसेनाश्च सर्वे त्वामवजानते ॥ पार्थं ह्येते गताः सर्वे वीर्यज्ञास्तस्य धीमतः ॥५-५३-१७॥
matsyāstvām adya nārcanti pāñcālāśca sakekayāḥ। śālveyāḥ śūrasenāśca sarve tvām avajānate ॥ pārthaṃ hyete gatāḥ sarve vīryajñās tasya dhīmataḥ ॥5-53-17॥
[मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - the Matsyas; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; अर्चन्ति (arcanti) - worship; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Panchalas; च (ca) - and; सकेकयाः (sakekayāḥ) - with the Kekayas; शाल्वेयाः (śālveyāḥ) - the Salveyas; शूरसेनाः (śūrasenāḥ) - the Shurasenas; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अवजानते (avajānate) - disregard; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Partha; हि (hi) - indeed; एते (ete) - these; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वीर्यज्ञाः (vīryajñāḥ) - knowers of valor; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise one;]
(The Matsyas do not worship you today, nor do the Panchalas with the Kekayas. The Salveyas and the Shurasenas all disregard you. Indeed, all these have gone to Partha, knowers of valor of the wise one.)
Today, the Matsyas, Panchalas, Kekayas, Salveyas, and Shurasenas do not honor you. They all have turned to Partha, recognizing his valor and wisdom.
अनर्हानेव तु वधे धर्मयुक्तान्विकर्मणा। सर्वोपायैर्नियन्तव्यः सानुगः पापपूरुषः ॥ तव पुत्रो महाराज नात्र शोचितुमर्हसि ॥५-५३-१८॥
anarhāneva tu vadhe dharmayuktānvikarmaṇā। sarvopāyairniyantavyaḥ sānugaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ ॥ tava putro mahārāja nātra śocitumarhasi ॥5-53-18॥
[अनर्हान् (anarhān) - unworthy; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; वधे (vadhe) - in killing; धर्मयुक्तान् (dharmayuktān) - righteous; विकर्मणा (vikarmaṇā) - by misdeed; सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; नियन्तव्यः (niyantavyaḥ) - to be restrained; सानुगः (sānuagaḥ) - with followers; पापपूरुषः (pāpapūruṣaḥ) - sinful man; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Indeed, the unworthy, though righteous, are to be restrained by all means, but not by killing through misdeed. O great king, your son, with followers, is a sinful man; you ought not to grieve here.)
O great king, even though your son is a sinful man with followers, he should be restrained by all means, but not killed through misdeed. Therefore, you should not grieve here.
द्यूतकाले मया चोक्तं विदुरेण च धीमता। यदिदं ते विलपितं पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ॥ अनीशेनेव राजेन्द्र सर्वमेतन्निरर्थकम् ॥५-५३-१९॥
dyūtakāle mayā coktaṃ vidureṇa ca dhīmatā। yadidaṃ te vilapitaṃ pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ॥ anīśeneva rājendra sarvametannirarthakam ॥5-53-19॥
[द्यूतकाले (dyūtakāle) - at the time of the game of dice; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - spoken; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; च (ca) - and; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; यदिदं (yadidaṃ) - this which; ते (te) - your; विलपितं (vilapitaṃ) - lamentation; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - towards the Pandavas; प्रति (prati) - towards; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; अनीशेन (anīśena) - by the powerless; इव (iva) - as if; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - meaningless;]
(At the time of the game of dice, spoken by me and by the wise Vidura, this lamentation of yours towards the Pandavas, O Bharata, is as if by the powerless, O king, all this is meaningless.)
During the game of dice, both I and the wise Vidura spoke, and now your lamentation towards the Pandavas, O Bharata, seems as if it is by someone powerless, O king, rendering all this meaningless.
