dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
Dhritarashtra said:
duryodhana vijānīhi yattvāṃ vakṣyāmi putrakaḥ। utpathaṃ manyase mārgamanabhijña ivādhvagaḥ ॥5-63-1॥
Duryodhana, understand what I am going to tell you, my dear son. You are mistaking the wrong path for the right one, like a traveler who is unaware of the way.
pañcānāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ yat tejaḥ pramimīṣasi। pañcānām iva bhūtānāṃ mahatāṃ sumahātmanām ॥5-63-2॥
The splendor of the five sons of Pandu, which you perceive, is akin to that of the five great beings, the noble souls.
yudhiṣṭhiraṃ hi kaunteyaṃ paraṃ dharmamihāsthitam। parāṃ gatimasamprekṣya na tvaṃ vettumihārhasi ॥5-63-3॥
Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, is truly established in the highest dharma here. Without understanding the ultimate goal, you cannot comprehend it here.
bhīmasenaṃ ca kaunteyaṃ yasya nāsti samo bale। raṇāntakaṃ tarkayase mahāvātamiva drumaḥ ॥5-63-4॥
You consider Bhimasena, the son of Kunti, who has no equal in strength, as the destroyer of foes, akin to how a great wind fells a tree.
sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ meruṃ śikhariṇāmiva। yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṃ ko nu yudhyeta buddhimān ॥5-63-5॥
Who, being wise, would dare to fight in battle with Arjuna, the wielder of the Gandiva bow, who is the best among all warriors, just as Meru is the best among mountains?
dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pāñcālyaḥ kamivādya na śātayet। śatrumadhye śarānmuñcandevarāḍaśanīmiva ॥5-63-6॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pāñcāla, is ready to slay anyone today, like Indra releasing his thunderbolt among enemies.
sātyakiścāpi durdharṣaḥ saṁmato'ndhakavṛṣṇiṣu। dhvaṁsayiṣyati te senāṁ pāṇḍaveyahite rataḥ ॥5-63-7॥
Satyaki, esteemed among the Andhakas and Vrishnis and known for his invincibility, is committed to the Pandavas' cause and will annihilate your forces.
yaḥ punaḥ pratimānena trī̱ṁllokān atiricyate। taṁ kṛṣṇaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ ko nu yudhyeta buddhimān ॥5-63-8॥
Who, being wise, would dare to fight Krishna, the lotus-eyed, who surpasses the three worlds by measure?
ekato hy asya dārāś ca jñātayaś ca sabāndhavāḥ। ātmā ca pṛthivī ceyam ekataś ca dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-63-9॥
On one side are his wives, relatives, and allies, while on the other side stand the self, the earth, and Arjuna.
vāsudevo'pi durdharṣo yatātmā yatra pāṇḍavaḥ। aviṣahyaṃ pṛthivyāpi tadbalaṃ yatra keśavaḥ ॥5-63-10॥
Vasudeva, who is invincible and self-controlled, stands with the Pandavas. The irresistible strength is present on earth where Keshava resides.
tiṣṭha tāta satāṃ vākye suhṛdāmarthavādinām। vṛddhaṃ śāṃtanavaṃ bhīṣmaṃ titikṣasva pitāmaham ॥5-63-11॥
Dear one, stand firm in the counsel of the virtuous and well-meaning friends. Show tolerance towards the aged Bhīṣma, the son of Śāṃtanu and your grandfather.
māṁ ca bruvāṇaṁ śuśrūṣa kurūṇāmarthavādinam। droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ vikarṇaṁ ca mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam ॥5-63-12॥
Listen to me as I speak of the Kurus' benefits: Droṇa, Kṛpa, Vikarṇa, and the great king Bāhlika.
ete hyapi yathaivāhaṁ mantumarhasi tāṁstathā। sarve dharmavido hyete tulyasnehāśca bhārata ॥5-63-13॥
"These, indeed, should be considered by you as I do. All of them are knowers of dharma and are equally affectionate, O Bharata."
yattadvirāṭanagare saha bhrātṛbhiragrataḥ। utsṛjya gāḥ susantrastaṃ balaṃ te samaśīryata ॥5-63-14॥
In the city of Virata, the army, very frightened, scattered in front of the brothers after abandoning the cows.
yaccaiva tasminnagare śrūyate mahadadbhutam। ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca paryāptaṃ tannidarśanam ॥5-63-15॥
The great wonder heard in that city serves as an example of something that is sufficient for both one and many.
arjunastattathākārṣītkiṃ punaḥ sarva eva te। sabhrātṝnabhiānīhi vṛttyā ca pratipādaya ॥5-63-16॥
Arjuna did exactly that; what more can be said about all of them? Recognize them with their brothers and establish them by their conduct.
