Pancharatra:Pre-empting the evil plans of Duryodhana to capture lord Krishna; Vidura and Dhritarashtra advise against such a move.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
तत्तु वाक्यमनादृत्य सोऽर्थवन्मातृभाषितम् । पुनः प्रतस्थे संरम्भात्सकाशमकृतात्मनाम् ॥५-१२८-१॥
Ignoring his mother's meaningful words, he angrily proceeded towards those who lack discipline.
ततः सभाया निर्गम्य मन्त्रयामास कौरवः । सौबलेन मताक्षेण राज्ञा शकुनिना सह ॥५-१२८-२॥
After leaving the assembly, Kaurava held a consultation with Saubala, the wise king, and Shakuni.
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च । दुःशासनचतुर्थानामिदमासीद्विचेष्टितम् ॥५-१२८-३॥
This describes the actions taken by Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, Saubala, and Duhshasana, highlighting their collective involvement.
पुरायमस्मान्गृह्णाति क्षिप्रकारी जनार्दनः । सहितो धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शान्तनवेन च ॥५-१२८-४॥
In the past, this swift Janardana, along with King Dhritarashtra and Shantanu, takes us.
वयमेव हृषीकेशं निगृह्णीम बलादिव । प्रसह्य पुरुषव्याघ्रमिन्द्रो वैरोचनिं यथा ॥५-१२८-५॥
We will seize Hṛṣīkeśa by force, overpowering him just as Indra once overpowered Virocana, the tiger among men.
श्रुत्वा गृहीतं वार्ष्णेयं पाण्डवा हतचेतसः । निरुत्साहा भविष्यन्ति भग्नदंष्ट्रा इवोरगाः ॥५-१२८-६॥
Upon hearing that the son of Vṛṣṇi has been captured, the Pāṇḍavas will lose heart and become dispirited, like serpents whose fangs have been broken.
अयं ह्येषां महाबाहुः सर्वेषां शर्म वर्म च । अस्मिन्गृहीते वरदे ऋषभे सर्वसात्वताम् ॥ निरुद्यमा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः सोमकैः सह ॥५-१२८-७॥
This mighty-armed hero is truly the protector and shield for everyone. When this boon-giving leader, the foremost among all Yadavas, is engaged, the Pandavas will effortlessly unite with the Somakas.
तस्माद्वयमिहैवैनं केशवं क्षिप्रकारिणम् । क्रोशतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य बद्ध्वा योत्स्यामहे रिपून् ॥५-१२८-८॥
Therefore, we will bind this quick-acting Keshava here and fight the enemies, while Dhritarashtra shouts.
तेषां पापमभिप्रायं पापानां दुष्टचेतसाम् । इङ्गितज्ञः कविः क्षिप्रमन्वबुध्यत सात्यकिः ॥५-१२८-९॥
Satyaki, being perceptive and wise, quickly grasped the malicious intentions of those wicked and malevolent individuals.
तदर्थमभिनिष्क्रम्य हार्दिक्येन सहास्थितः । अब्रवीत्कृतवर्माणं क्षिप्रं योजय वाहिनीम् ॥५-१२८-१०॥
For that purpose, he went out with Hārdikya and stood, then said to Kṛtavarmā, "Quickly arrange the army."
व्यूढानीकः सभाद्वारमुपतिष्ठस्व दंशितः । यावदाख्याम्यहं चैतत्कृष्णायाक्लिष्टकर्मणे ॥५-१२८-११॥
Stand adorned at the assembly door, arrayed in formation, until I convey this to Krishna, the tireless performer.
स प्रविश्य सभां वीरः सिंहो गिरिगुहामिव । आचष्ट तमभिप्रायं केशवाय महात्मने ॥५-१२८-१२॥
The hero entered the assembly as a lion enters a mountain cave and expressed his intention to Keshava, the revered one.
धृतराष्ट्रं ततश्चैव विदुरं चान्वभाषत । तेषामेतमभिप्रायमाचचक्षे स्मयन्निव ॥५-१२८-१३॥
Dhritarashtra then addressed Vidura and explained their intention with a smile, as if he was amused.
धर्मादपेतमर्थाच्च कर्म साधुविगर्हितम् । मन्दाः कर्तुमिहेच्छन्ति न चावाप्यं कथञ्चन ॥५-१२८-१४॥
Fools here desire to undertake actions that deviate from righteousness and purpose, actions condemned by the wise, and such actions are never truly attainable.
पुरा विकुर्वते मूढाः पापात्मानः समागताः । धर्षिताः काममन्युभ्यां क्रोधलोभवशानुगाः ॥५-१२८-१५॥
In the past, foolish and sinful individuals gathered and acted wrongly, being overpowered by their desires and anger, and were subject to wrath and greed.
इमं हि पुण्डरीकाक्षं जिघृक्षन्त्यल्पचेतसः । पटेनाग्निं प्रज्वलितं यथा बाला यथा जडाः ॥५-१२८-१६॥
Indeed, those with little understanding attempt to capture the lotus-eyed being, just as children or fools might try to cover a blazing fire with a cloth.
सात्यकेस्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा विदुरो दीर्घदर्शिवान् । धृतराष्ट्रं महाबाहुमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१२८-१७॥
Upon hearing Satyaki's words, the wise Vidura addressed the strong-armed Dhritarashtra in the Kuru assembly.
राजन्परीतकालास्ते पुत्राः सर्वे परन्तप । अयशस्यमशक्यं च कर्म कर्तुं समुद्यताः ॥५-१२८-१८॥
O King, your sons, all of them, are ready to undertake a deed that is both inglorious and impossible, as they are surrounded by the inevitable passage of time, O scorcher of foes.
इमं हि पुण्डरीकाक्षमभिभूय प्रसह्य च । निग्रहीतुं किलेच्छन्ति सहिता वासवानुजम् ॥५-१२८-१९॥
Indeed, they desire to overpower and forcibly restrain this lotus-eyed one along with Indra's younger brother.
इमं पुरुषशार्दूलमप्रधृष्यं दुरासदम् । आसाद्य न भविष्यन्ति पतङ्गा इव पावकम् ॥५-१२८-२०॥
Upon confronting this formidable and unyielding warrior, they will not meet their end like moths drawn to a fire.
अयमिच्छन्हि तान्सर्वान्यतमानाञ्जनार्दनः । सिंहो मृगानिव क्रुद्धो गमयेद्यमसादनम् ॥५-१२८-२१॥
Janardana, desiring to conquer all those who strive against him, would, like an angry lion, send them to the abode of Yama.
न त्वयं निन्दितं कर्म कुर्यात्कृष्णः कथञ्चन । न च धर्मादपक्रामेदच्युतः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥५-१२८-२२॥
Krishna, under no circumstances, should engage in any blameworthy action, nor should Acyuta, the supreme being, ever stray from the path of righteousness.
विदुरेणैवमुक्ते तु केशवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् । धृतराष्ट्रमभिप्रेक्ष्य सुहृदां शृण्वतां मिथः ॥५-१२८-२३॥
After Vidura spoke, Keshava addressed Dhritarashtra, ensuring that all friends present were listening to the conversation.
राजन्नेते यदि क्रुद्धा मां निगृह्णीयुरोजसा । एते वा मामहं वैनाननुजानीहि पार्थिव ॥५-१२८-२४॥
O king, if these angry ones were to seize me with their strength, or if I were to permit these actions, O prince.
एतान्हि सर्वान्संरब्धान्नियन्तुमहमुत्सहे । न त्वहं निन्दितं कर्म कुर्यां पापं कथञ्चन ॥५-१२८-२५॥
I am indeed capable of controlling all these agitated individuals, but I would never engage in any action that is blameworthy or sinful in any manner.
पाण्डवार्थे हि लुभ्यन्तः स्वार्थाद्धास्यन्ति ते सुताः । एते चेदेवमिच्छन्ति कृतकार्यो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१२८-२६॥
Indeed, in their desire to support the Pāṇḍavas, those sons will forsake their own interests. If this is their wish, Yudhiṣṭhira has achieved his purpose.
अद्यैव ह्यहमेतांश्च ये चैताननु भारत । निगृह्य राजन्पार्थेभ्यो दद्यां किं दुष्कृतं भवेत् ॥५-१२८-२७॥
Today itself, I would capture these people and those who follow them, O Bhārata, and hand them over to the sons of Pṛthā, O king; what wrong would there be in doing so?
इदं तु न प्रवर्तेयं निन्दितं कर्म भारत । संनिधौ ते महाराज क्रोधजं पापबुद्धिजम् ॥५-१२८-२८॥
O Bhārata, this condemned action, born of anger and sinful intent, should not be undertaken in your presence, O great king.
एष दुर्योधनो राजन्यथेच्छति तथास्तु तत् । अहं तु सर्वान्समयाननुजानामि भारत ॥५-१२८-२९॥
O King, let it be as Duryodhana desires. However, I approve all the agreements, O Bhārata.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत । क्षिप्रमानय तं पापं राज्यलुब्धं सुयोधनम् ॥५-१२८-३०॥
Upon hearing this, Dhritarashtra addressed Vidura, instructing him to swiftly bring Suyodhana, who was greedy for the kingdom and considered wicked.
सहमित्रं सहामात्यं ससोदर्यं सहानुगम् । शक्नुयां यदि पन्थानमवतारयितुं पुनः ॥५-१२८-३१॥
If I could, I would bring down the path again with my friend, minister, brother, and follower.
ततो दुर्योधनं क्षत्ता पुनः प्रावेशयत्सभाम् । अकामं भ्रातृभिः सार्धं राजभिः परिवारितम् ॥५-१२८-३२॥
Then, the charioteer brought Duryodhana back into the assembly, unwillingly, along with his brothers, surrounded by the kings.
अथ दुर्योधनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत । कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च राजभिश्चाभिसंवृतम् ॥५-१२८-३३॥
Then King Dhritarashtra spoke to Duryodhana, who was surrounded by Karna, Duhshasana, and other kings.
नृशंस पापभूयिष्ठ क्षुद्रकर्मसहायवान् । पापैः सहायैः संहत्य पापं कर्म चिकीर्षसि ॥५-१२८-३४॥
You, who are cruel and most sinful, intend to commit a sinful act together with vile companions.
अशक्यमयशस्यं च सद्भिश्चापि विगर्हितम् । यथा त्वादृशको मूढो व्यवस्येत्कुलपांसनः ॥५-१२८-३५॥
It is impossible, disgraceful, and condemned by the wise, as only a fool like you, a disgrace to the family, would decide.
त्वमिमं पुण्डरीकाक्षमप्रधृष्यं दुरासदम् । पापैः सहायैः संहत्य निग्रहीतुं किलेच्छसि ॥५-१२८-३६॥
You desire to conquer this invincible and formidable lotus-eyed being, along with your sinful allies.
यो न शक्यो बलात्कर्तुं देवैरपि सवासवैः । तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे मन्द बालश्चन्द्रमसं यथा ॥५-१२८-३७॥
You, foolish child, desire someone who cannot be compelled even by the gods along with Indra, just as one might desire the moon.
देवैर्मनुष्यैर्गन्धर्वैरसुरैरुरगैश्च यः । न सोढुं समरे शक्यस्तं न बुध्यसि केशवम् ॥५-१२८-३८॥
You do not recognize Keshava, who cannot be withstood in battle by gods, humans, celestial musicians, demons, or serpents.
दुर्ग्रहः पाणिना वायुर्दुःस्पर्शः पाणिना शशी । दुर्धरा पृथिवी मूर्ध्ना दुर्ग्रहः केशवो बलात् ॥५-१२८-३९॥
The wind cannot be grasped by hand, the moon cannot be touched by hand; the earth cannot be held by head, and Keshava (Krishna) cannot be compelled by force.
इत्युक्ते धृतराष्ट्रेण क्षत्तापि विदुरोऽब्रवीत् । दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य धार्तराष्ट्रममर्षणम् ॥५-१२८-४०॥
After Dhritarashtra spoke, Vidura, the charioteer, addressed Duryodhana, the impatient son of Dhritarashtra, while looking at him.
सौभद्वारे वानरेन्द्रो द्विविदो नाम नामतः । शिलावर्षेण महता छादयामास केशवम् ॥५-१२८-४१॥
At the gate of Saubha, the renowned monkey chief Dvivida attacked Keshava with a massive barrage of stones.
ग्रहीतुकामो विक्रम्य सर्वयत्नेन माधवम् । ग्रहीतुं नाशकत्तत्र तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥५-१२८-४२॥
Desiring to capture Madhava with all your might, you tried but failed to seize him there, and now you are trying to forcefully request him.
निर्मोचने षट्सहस्राः पाशैर्बद्ध्वा महासुराः । ग्रहीतुं नाशकंश्चैनं तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥५-१२८-४३॥
In the act of liberation, six thousand great demons, having bound him with nooses, were unable to capture him, and now you are forcefully requesting him.
प्राग्ज्योतिषगतं शौरिं नरकः सह दानवैः । ग्रहीतुं नाशकत्तत्र तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥५-१२८-४४॥
Naraka, along with his demon allies, could not capture Śauri in Prāgjyotiṣa; yet you wish to take him by force.
अनेन हि हता बाल्ये पूतना शिशुना तथा । गोवर्धनो धारितश्च गवार्थे भरतर्षभ ॥५-१२८-४५॥
In his childhood, the child indeed killed Pūtanā; and also, O best of the Bharatas, he held up Govardhana for the protection of the cows.
अरिष्टो धेनुकश्चैव चाणूरश्च महाबलः । अश्वराजश्च निहतः कंसश्चारिष्टमाचरन् ॥५-१२८-४६॥
Ariṣṭa, Dhenuka, Cāṇūra, the mighty Aśvarāja, and Kaṃsa were all slain, and Ariṣṭa performed his duty.
जरासन्धश्च वक्रश्च शिशुपालश्च वीर्यवान् । बाणश्च निहतः सङ्ख्ये राजानश्च निषूदिताः ॥५-१२८-४७॥
Jarāsandha, Vakra, Śiśupāla, and the mighty Bāṇa were all slain in battle, and the kings were destroyed.
वरुणो निर्जितो राजा पावकश्चामितौजसा । पारिजातं च हरता जितः साक्षाच्छचीपतिः ॥५-१२८-४८॥
Varuna, the king, was defeated by someone with immeasurable energy, and the fire was subdued by the one who took the Parijata tree, directly by the lord of Shachi.
एकार्णवे शयानेन हतौ तौ मधुकैटभौ । जन्मान्तरमुपागम्य हयग्रीवस्तथा हतः ॥५-१२८-४९॥
In the great ocean, while lying down, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha were slain. After being reborn, Hayagriva was also killed in a similar manner.
अयं कर्ता न क्रियते कारणं चापि पौरुषे । यद्यदिच्छेदयं शौरिस्तत्तत्कुर्यादयत्नतः ॥५-१२८-५०॥
This person is not made a cause in human efforts. Whatever this hero desires, he should accomplish it effortlessly.
तं न बुध्यसि गोविन्दं घोरविक्रममच्युतम् । आशीविषमिव क्रुद्धं तेजोराशिमनिर्जितम् ॥५-१२८-५१॥
You are unaware of Govinda, who possesses immense power and is infallible, like an enraged serpent, an unconquered source of energy.
प्रधर्षयन्महाबाहुं कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् । पतङ्गोऽग्निमिवासाद्य सामात्यो न भविष्यसि ॥५-१२८-५२॥
By attacking the mighty-armed Krishna, who performs his duties effortlessly, you will meet your end like a moth that flies into a flame, and neither you nor your ministers will survive.
