Pancharatra:Pre-empting the evil plans of Duryodhana to capture lord Krishna; Vidura and Dhritarashtra advise against such a move.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
tattu vākyamanādṛtya so'rthavanmātṛbhāṣitam । punaḥ pratasthe saṁrambhātsakāśamakṛtātmanām ॥5-128-1॥
Ignoring his mother's meaningful words, he angrily proceeded towards those who lack discipline.
tataḥ sabhāyā nirgamya mantrayāmāsa kauravaḥ । saubalena matākṣeṇa rājñā śakuninā saha ॥5-128-2॥
After leaving the assembly, Kaurava held a consultation with Saubala, the wise king, and Shakuni.
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca . duḥśāsanacaturthānām idam āsīd viceṣṭitam ॥5-128-3॥
This describes the actions taken by Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, Saubala, and Duhshasana, highlighting their collective involvement.
purāyam asmān gṛhṇāti kṣiprakārī janārdanaḥ । sahito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā śāntanavena ca ॥5-128-4॥
In the past, this swift Janardana, along with King Dhritarashtra and Shantanu, takes us.
vayameva hṛṣīkeśaṃ nigṛhṇīma balādiva । prasahya puruṣavyāghramindro vairocaniṃ yathā ॥5-128-5॥
We will seize Hṛṣīkeśa by force, overpowering him just as Indra once overpowered Virocana, the tiger among men.
śrutvā gṛhītaṃ vārṣṇeyaṃ pāṇḍavā hatacetasaḥ । nirutsāhā bhaviṣyanti bhagnadaṃṣṭrā ivoragāḥ ॥5-128-6॥
Upon hearing that the son of Vṛṣṇi has been captured, the Pāṇḍavas will lose heart and become dispirited, like serpents whose fangs have been broken.
ayaṁ hyeṣāṁ mahābāhuḥ sarveṣāṁ śarma varma ca । asmingṛhīte varade ṛṣabhe sarvasātvatām ॥ nirudyamā bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ saha ॥5-128-7॥
This mighty-armed hero is truly the protector and shield for everyone. When this boon-giving leader, the foremost among all Yadavas, is engaged, the Pandavas will effortlessly unite with the Somakas.
tasmād vayam ihaiva enaṃ keśavaṃ kṣiprakāriṇam । krośato dhṛtarāṣṭrasya baddhvā yotsyāmahe ripūn ॥5-128-8॥
Therefore, we will bind this quick-acting Keshava here and fight the enemies, while Dhritarashtra shouts.
teṣāṃ pāpamabhiprāyaṃ pāpānāṃ duṣṭacetasām । iṅgitajñaḥ kaviḥ kṣipramanvabudhyata sātyakiḥ ॥5-128-9॥
Satyaki, being perceptive and wise, quickly grasped the malicious intentions of those wicked and malevolent individuals.
tadartham abhiniṣkramya hārdikyena sahāsthitaḥ । abravīt kṛtavarmāṇaṃ kṣipraṃ yojaya vāhinīm ॥5-128-10॥
For that purpose, he went out with Hārdikya and stood, then said to Kṛtavarmā, "Quickly arrange the army."
vyūḍhānīkaḥ sabhādvāramupatiṣṭhasva daṃśitaḥ । yāvadākhyāmyahaṃ caitatkṛṣṇāyākliṣṭakarmaṇe ॥5-128-11॥
Stand adorned at the assembly door, arrayed in formation, until I convey this to Krishna, the tireless performer.
sa praviśya sabhāṃ vīraḥ siṃho giriguhāmiva । ācaṣṭa tamabhiprāyaṃ keśavāya mahātmane ॥5-128-12॥
The hero entered the assembly as a lion enters a mountain cave and expressed his intention to Keshava, the revered one.
dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ tataścaiva viduraṃ cānvabhāṣata । teṣāmetamabhiprāyamācacakṣe smayanniva ॥5-128-13॥
Dhritarashtra then addressed Vidura and explained their intention with a smile, as if he was amused.
dharmādapetamarthācca karma sādhuvigarhitam । mandāḥ kartum ihecchanti na cāvāpyaṃ kathaṃcana ॥5-128-14॥
Fools here desire to undertake actions that deviate from righteousness and purpose, actions condemned by the wise, and such actions are never truly attainable.
purā vikurvate mūḍhāḥ pāpātmānaḥ samāgatāḥ । dharṣitāḥ kāmamanyubhyāṃ krodhalobhavaśānugāḥ ॥5-128-15॥
In the past, foolish and sinful individuals gathered and acted wrongly, being overpowered by their desires and anger, and were subject to wrath and greed.
imaṁ hi puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ jighṛkṣantyalpacetasaḥ । paṭenāgniṁ prajvalitaṁ yathā bālā yathā jaḍāḥ ॥5-128-16॥
Indeed, those with little understanding attempt to capture the lotus-eyed being, just as children or fools might try to cover a blazing fire with a cloth.
sātyakestadvacaḥ śrutvā viduro dīrghadarśivān । dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ mahābāhumabravītkurusaṃsadi ॥5-128-17॥
Upon hearing Satyaki's words, the wise Vidura addressed the strong-armed Dhritarashtra in the Kuru assembly.
rājanparītakālāste putrāḥ sarve parantapa । ayaśasyamaśakyaṃ ca karma kartuṃ samudyatāḥ ॥5-128-18॥
O King, your sons, all of them, are ready to undertake a deed that is both inglorious and impossible, as they are surrounded by the inevitable passage of time, O scorcher of foes.
imaṁ hi puṇḍarīkākṣamabhibhūya prasahya ca । nigrahītuṁ kilecchanti sahitā vāsavānujam ॥5-128-19॥
Indeed, they desire to overpower and forcibly restrain this lotus-eyed one along with Indra's younger brother.
imaṁ puruṣaśārdūlamapradhṛṣyaṁ durāsadam । āsādya na bhaviṣyanti pataṅgā iva pāvakam ॥5-128-20॥
Upon confronting this formidable and unyielding warrior, they will not meet their end like moths drawn to a fire.
ayam icchan hi tān sarvān yatamānān janārdanaḥ । siṃho mṛgān iva kruddho gamayed yamasādanam ॥5-128-21॥
Janardana, desiring to conquer all those who strive against him, would, like an angry lion, send them to the abode of Yama.
na tvayaṃ ninditaṃ karma kuryāt kṛṣṇaḥ kathañcana । na ca dharmādapakrāmed acyutaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ॥5-128-22॥
Krishna, under no circumstances, should engage in any blameworthy action, nor should Acyuta, the supreme being, ever stray from the path of righteousness.
vidureṇaivamukte tu keśavo vākyamabravīt । dhṛtarāṣṭramabhiprekṣya suhṛdāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ mithaḥ ॥5-128-23॥
After Vidura spoke, Keshava addressed Dhritarashtra, ensuring that all friends present were listening to the conversation.
rājannete yadi kruddhā māṃ nigṛhṇīyurojasā । ete vā māmahaṃ vainānanujānīhi pārthiva ॥5-128-24॥
O king, if these angry ones were to seize me with their strength, or if I were to permit these actions, O prince.
etān hi sarvān saṁrabdhān niyantum aham utsahe । na tv ahaṁ ninditaṁ karma kuryāṁ pāpaṁ kathañcana ॥5-128-25॥
I am indeed capable of controlling all these agitated individuals, but I would never engage in any action that is blameworthy or sinful in any manner.
pāṇḍavārthe hi lubhyantaḥ svārthāddhāsyanti te sutāḥ । ete cedevamichanti kṛtakāryo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-128-26॥
Indeed, in their desire to support the Pāṇḍavas, those sons will forsake their own interests. If this is their wish, Yudhiṣṭhira has achieved his purpose.
adyaiva hy aham etāṁś ca ye caitān anu bhārata । nigṛhya rājan pārthebhyo dadyāṁ kiṁ duṣkṛtaṁ bhavet ॥5-128-27॥
Today itself, I would capture these people and those who follow them, O Bhārata, and hand them over to the sons of Pṛthā, O king; what wrong would there be in doing so?
idaṃ tu na pravarteyaṃ ninditaṃ karma bhārata । saṃnidhau te mahārāja krodhajaṃ pāpabuddhijam ॥5-128-28॥
O Bhārata, this condemned action, born of anger and sinful intent, should not be undertaken in your presence, O great king.
eṣa duryodhano rājanyathecchati tathāstu tat । ahaṃ tu sarvānsamayānanujānāmi bhārata ॥5-128-29॥
O King, let it be as Duryodhana desires. However, I approve all the agreements, O Bhārata.
etacchrutvā tu viduraṃ dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata । kṣipramānaya taṃ pāpaṃ rājyalubdhaṃ suyodhanam ॥5-128-30॥
Upon hearing this, Dhritarashtra addressed Vidura, instructing him to swiftly bring Suyodhana, who was greedy for the kingdom and considered wicked.
sahamitram sahāmātyaṃ sasodaryaṃ sahānugam । śaknuyāṃ yadi panthānamavatārayituṃ punaḥ ॥5-128-31॥
If I could, I would bring down the path again with my friend, minister, brother, and follower.
tato duryodhanaṁ kṣattā punaḥ prāveśayatsabhām । akāmaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam ॥5-128-32॥
Then, the charioteer brought Duryodhana back into the assembly, unwillingly, along with his brothers, surrounded by the kings.
atha duryodhanaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata । karṇaduḥśāsanābhyāṁ ca rājabhiścābhisaṁvṛtam ॥5-128-33॥
Then King Dhritarashtra spoke to Duryodhana, who was surrounded by Karna, Duhshasana, and other kings.
nṛśaṃsa pāpabhūyiṣṭha kṣudrakarmasahāyavān । pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya pāpaṃ karma cikīrṣasi ॥5-128-34॥
You, who are cruel and most sinful, intend to commit a sinful act together with vile companions.
aśakyamayaśasyaṃ ca sadbhiścāpi vigarhitam । yathā tvādṛśako mūḍho vyavasyetkulapāṃsanaḥ ॥5-128-35॥
It is impossible, disgraceful, and condemned by the wise, as only a fool like you, a disgrace to the family, would decide.
tvam imaṃ puṇḍarīkākṣam apradhṛṣyaṃ durāsadam । pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya nigrahītuṃ kilecchasi ॥5-128-36॥
You desire to conquer this invincible and formidable lotus-eyed being, along with your sinful allies.
yo na śakyo balātkartuṃ devairapi savāsavaiḥ । taṃ tvaṃ prārthayase manda bālaścandramasaṃ yathā ॥5-128-37॥
You, foolish child, desire someone who cannot be compelled even by the gods along with Indra, just as one might desire the moon.
devairmanuṣyairgandharvairasurairuragaiśca yaḥ । na soḍhuṃ samare śakyastaṃ na budhyasi keśavam ॥5-128-38॥
You do not recognize Keshava, who cannot be withstood in battle by gods, humans, celestial musicians, demons, or serpents.
durgrahaḥ pāṇinā vāyurduḥsparśaḥ pāṇinā śaśī । durdharā pṛthivī mūrdhnā durgrahaḥ keśavo balāt ॥5-128-39॥
The wind cannot be grasped by hand, the moon cannot be touched by hand; the earth cannot be held by head, and Keshava (Krishna) cannot be compelled by force.
ityukte dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa kṣattāpi viduro'bravīt . duryodhanamabhiprekṣya dhārtarāṣṭramamarṣaṇam ॥5-128-40॥
After Dhritarashtra spoke, Vidura, the charioteer, addressed Duryodhana, the impatient son of Dhritarashtra, while looking at him.
saubhadvāre vānarendro dvivido nāma nāmataḥ । śilāvarṣeṇa mahatā chādayāmāsa keśavam ॥5-128-41॥
At the gate of Saubha, the renowned monkey chief Dvivida attacked Keshava with a massive barrage of stones.
grahītukāmo vikramya sarvayatnena mādhavam । grahītuṃ nāśakattatra taṃ tvaṃ prārthayase balāt ॥5-128-42॥
Desiring to capture Madhava with all your might, you tried but failed to seize him there, and now you are trying to forcefully request him.
nirmocane ṣaṭsahasrāḥ pāśairbaddhvā mahāsurāḥ । grahītuṃ nāśakaṃścainaṃ taṃ tvaṃ prārthayase balāt ॥5-128-43॥
In the act of liberation, six thousand great demons, having bound him with nooses, were unable to capture him, and now you are forcefully requesting him.
prāgjyotiṣagataṃ śauriṃ narakaḥ saha dānavaiḥ । grahītuṃ nāśakattatra taṃ tvaṃ prārthayase balāt ॥5-128-44॥
Naraka, along with his demon allies, could not capture Śauri in Prāgjyotiṣa; yet you wish to take him by force.
anena hi hatā bālye pūtanā śiśunā tathā । govardhano dhāritaśca gavārthe bharatarṣabha ॥5-128-45॥
In his childhood, the child indeed killed Pūtanā; and also, O best of the Bharatas, he held up Govardhana for the protection of the cows.
ariṣṭo dhenukaścaiva cāṇūraśca mahābalaḥ । aśvarājaśca nihataḥ kaṃsaścāriṣṭamācaran ॥5-128-46॥
Ariṣṭa, Dhenuka, Cāṇūra, the mighty Aśvarāja, and Kaṃsa were all slain, and Ariṣṭa performed his duty.
jarāsandhaśca vakraśca śiśupālaśca vīryavān । bāṇaśca nihataḥ saṅkhye rājānaśca niṣūditāḥ ॥5-128-47॥
Jarāsandha, Vakra, Śiśupāla, and the mighty Bāṇa were all slain in battle, and the kings were destroyed.
varuṇo nirjito rājā pāvakaścāmitaujasā । pārijātaṃ ca haratā jitaḥ sākṣācchacīpatiḥ ॥5-128-48॥
Varuna, the king, was defeated by someone with immeasurable energy, and the fire was subdued by the one who took the Parijata tree, directly by the lord of Shachi.
ekārṇave śayānena hatau tau madhukaiṭabhau । janmāntaramupāgamya hayagrīvastathā hataḥ ॥5-128-49॥
In the great ocean, while lying down, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha were slain. After being reborn, Hayagriva was also killed in a similar manner.
ayaṁ kartā na kriyate kāraṇaṁ cāpi pauruṣe । yadyadicchedayaṁ śauristattatkurvādayatnataḥ ॥5-128-50॥
This person is not made a cause in human efforts. Whatever this hero desires, he should accomplish it effortlessly.
taṁ na budhyasi govindaṁ ghoravikramamacyutam । āśīviṣamiva kruddhaṁ tejorāśimanirjitam ॥5-128-51॥
You are unaware of Govinda, who possesses immense power and is infallible, like an enraged serpent, an unconquered source of energy.
pradharṣayan mahābāhuṃ kṛṣṇam akliṣṭakāriṇam । pataṅgo'gnim ivāsādya sāmātyo na bhaviṣyasi ॥5-128-52॥
By attacking the mighty-armed Krishna, who performs his duties effortlessly, you will meet your end like a moth that flies into a flame, and neither you nor your ministers will survive.
