नैव राज्ञा दरः कार्यो जातु कस्याञ्चिदापदि । अथ चेदपि दीर्णः स्यान्नैव वर्तेत दीर्णवत् ॥५-१३४-१॥
naiva rājñā daraḥ kāryo jātu kasyāñcidāpadi । atha cedapi dīrṇaḥ syānnaiva varteta dīrṇavat ॥5-134-1॥
[नैव (naiva) - never; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दरः (daraḥ) - fear; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be made; जातु (jātu) - at any time; कस्याञ्चित् (kasyāñcit) - in any situation; आपदि (āpadi) - in adversity; अथ (atha) - but; चेत् (cet) - if; अपि (api) - even; दीर्णः (dīrṇaḥ) - broken; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; नैव (naiva) - never; वर्तेत (varteta) - should act; दीर्णवत् (dīrṇavat) - as broken;]
(Never should fear be made by the king at any time in any situation of adversity. But if even broken, he should never act as broken.)
A king should never show fear in any adverse situation. However, even if he is broken, he should not behave as if he is defeated.
दीर्णं हि दृष्ट्वा राजानं सर्वमेवानुदीर्यते । राष्ट्रं बलममात्याश्च पृथक्कुर्वन्ति ते मतिम् ॥५-१३४-२॥
dīrṇaṃ hi dṛṣṭvā rājānaṃ sarvamevānudīryate । rāṣṭraṃ balamamātyāśca pṛthakkurvanti te matim ॥5-134-2॥

(Indeed, having seen the torn king, all is declared. The kingdom, army, and ministers make their decision separately.)
Upon seeing the king in distress, everything is announced. The kingdom, army, and ministers each make their own decisions separately.
शत्रूनेके प्रपद्यन्ते प्रजहत्यपरे पुनः । अन्वेके प्रजिहीर्षन्ति ये पुरस्ताद्विमानिताः ॥५-१३४-३॥
śatrūneke prapadyante prajahatyapare punaḥ । anveke prajihīrṣanti ye purastādvimānitāḥ ॥5-134-3॥

(Those who are indeed true friends worship him. Powerless, desiring welfare, like cows with calves tied, like Ida, they grieve after the grieving, like relatives grieve after those who have gone.)
True friends indeed worship him. Even those who are powerless and desire welfare, like cows with calves tied, grieve after him as relatives grieve for those who have departed.
अपि ते पूजिताः पूर्वमपि ते सुहृदो मताः । ये राष्ट्रमभिमन्यन्ते राज्ञो व्यसनमीयुषः ॥ मा दीदरस्त्वं सुहृदो मा त्वां दीर्णं प्रहासिषुः ॥५-१३४-५॥
api te pūjitāḥ pūrvamapi te suhṛdo matāḥ । ye rāṣṭramabhimanyante rājño vyasanamīyuṣaḥ ॥ mā dīdarastvaṃ suhṛdo mā tvāṃ dīrṇaṃ prahāsiṣuḥ ॥5-134-5॥

(Also, your respected friends, formerly considered, who desire the kingdom, approaching the calamity of the king, do not be seen, you friends, do not let them laugh at you broken.)
Even your respected friends, who were once considered close, now desire the kingdom and approach the king's calamity. Do not let yourself be seen by them, lest they laugh at you in your broken state.
प्रभावं पौरुषं बुद्धिं जिज्ञासन्त्या मया तव । उल्लपन्त्या समाश्वासं बलवानिव दुर्बलम् ॥५-१३४-६॥
prabhāvaṃ pauruṣaṃ buddhiṃ jijñāsantyā mayā tava । ullapantyā samāśvāsaṃ balavāniva durbalam ॥5-134-6॥

यद्येतत्संविजानासि यदि सम्यग्ब्रवीम्यहम् । कृत्वासौम्यमिवात्मानं जयायोत्तिष्ठ सञ्जय ॥५-१३४-७॥
yadyetatsaṃvijānāsi yadi samyagbravīmyaham । kṛtvāsaumyamivātmānaṃ jayāyottiṣṭha sañjaya ॥5-134-7॥

अस्ति नः कोशनिचयो महानविदितस्तव । तमहं वेद नान्यस्तमुपसम्पादयामि ते ॥५-१३४-८॥
asti naḥ kośanicayo mahānaviditastava । tamahaṃ veda nānyastamupasampādayāmi te ॥5-134-8॥

सन्ति नैकशता भूयः सुहृदस्तव सञ्जय । सुखदुःखसहा वीर शतार्हा अनिवर्तिनः ॥५-१३४-९॥

[सन्ति (santi) - are; नैकशता (naikaśatā) - many hundreds; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; तव (tava) - your; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; सुखदुःखसहा (sukhaduḥkhasahā) - sharing joy and sorrow; वीर (vīra) - hero; शतार्हाः (śatārhāḥ) - worthy of hundreds; अनिवर्तिनः (anivartinaḥ) - non-retreating;]
(There are many hundreds more of your friends, Sanjaya, sharing joy and sorrow, heroes worthy of hundreds, non-retreating.)

तादृशा हि सहाया वै पुरुषस्य बुभूषतः । ईषदुज्जिहतः किञ्चित्सचिवाः शत्रुकर्शनाः ॥५-१३४-१०॥
tādṛśā hi sahāyā vai puruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ । īṣadujjihataḥ kiñcitsacivāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ ॥5-134-10॥
[तादृशाः (tādṛśāḥ) - such; हि (hi) - indeed; सहायाः (sahāyāḥ) - helpers; वै (vai) - truly; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; बुभूषतः (bubhūṣataḥ) - desiring; ईषत् (īṣat) - slightly; उज्जिहतः (ujjihataḥ) - rising; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; सचिवाः (sacivāḥ) - ministers; शत्रुकर्शनाः (śatrukarśanāḥ) - destroyers of enemies;]
(Such indeed are the helpers truly of a man desiring slightly rising a little ministers destroyers of enemies.)

कस्य त्वीदृशकं वाक्यं श्रुत्वापि स्वल्पचेतसः । तमो न व्यपहन्येत सुचित्रार्थपदाक्षरम् ॥५-१३४-११॥
kasya tvīdṛśakaṃ vākyaṃ śrutvāpi svalpacetasaḥ । tamo na vyapahanyeta sucitrārthapadākṣaram ॥5-134-11॥
[कस्य (kasya) - whose; त्व (tvi) - indeed; ईदृशकं (īdṛśakaṃ) - such a kind; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अपि (api) - even; स्वल्पचेतसः (svalpacetasaḥ) - of little intelligence; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; न (na) - not; व्यपहन्येत (vyapahanyeta) - would be dispelled; सुचित्रार्थपदाक्षरम् (sucitrārthapadākṣaram) - with well-constructed words and meanings;]
(Whose indeed such a kind of speech, having heard even by one of little intelligence, the darkness would not be dispelled with well-constructed words and meanings.)

उदके धूरियं धार्या सर्तव्यं प्रवणे मया । यस्य मे भवती नेत्री भविष्यद्भूतदर्शिनी ॥५-१३४-१२॥
udake dhūriyaṃ dhāryā sartavyaṃ pravaṇe mayā । yasya me bhavatī netrī bhaviṣyadbhūtadarśinī ॥5-134-12॥
[उदके (udake) - in water; धूरियम् (dhūriyam) - burden; धार्या (dhāryā) - to be borne; सर्तव्यम् (sartavyam) - to be crossed; प्रवणे (pravaṇe) - in slope; मया (mayā) - by me; यस्य (yasya) - whose; मे (me) - my; भवती (bhavatī) - lady; नेत्री (netrī) - guide; भविष्यद्भूतदर्शिनी (bhaviṣyadbhūtadarśinī) - seer of future and past;]
(In water, the burden is to be borne, to be crossed in slope by me, whose lady is my guide, seer of future and past.)
In the water, I must bear the burden and cross the slope, guided by my lady who sees both the future and the past.
अहं हि वचनं त्वत्तः शुश्रूषुरपरापरम् । किञ्चित्किञ्चित्प्रतिवदंस्तूष्णीमासं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥५-१३४-१३॥
ahaṁ hi vacanaṁ tvattaḥ śuśrūṣuraparāparam । kiñcitkiñcitprativadaṁstūṣṇīmāsaṁ muhurmuhuḥ ॥5-134-13॥

(Not satisfied like nectar obtained with difficulty from a relative, I rise for the control and victory over enemies.)
Just as one is not satisfied with nectar obtained with difficulty from a relative, I rise to control and conquer the enemies.

सदश्व इव स क्षिप्तः प्रणुन्नो वाक्यसायकैः । तच्चकार तथा सर्वं यथावदनुशासनम् ॥५-१३४-१५॥
sadaśva iva sa kṣiptaḥ praṇunno vākyasāyakaiḥ । taccakāra tathā sarvaṃ yathāvadanuśāsanam ॥5-134-15॥
[सदश्व (sadaśva) - like a good horse; इव (iva) - as; सः (saḥ) - he; क्षिप्तः (kṣiptaḥ) - hurled; प्रणुन्नः (praṇunnaḥ) - driven; वाक्यसायकैः (vākyasāyakaiḥ) - by verbal arrows; तत् (tat) - that; चकार (cakāra) - did; तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; अनुशासनम् (anuśāsanam) - instruction;]
(He, like a good horse, was hurled, driven by verbal arrows. He did all that was instructed properly.)

इदं पुंसवनं चैव वीराजननमेव च । अभीक्ष्णं गर्भिणी श्रुत्वा ध्रुवं वीरं प्रजायते ॥५-१३४-१८॥
idaṃ puṃsavanaṃ caiva vīrājananameva ca । abhīkṣṇaṃ garbhiṇī śrutvā dhruvaṃ vīraṃ prajāyate ॥5-134-18॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; पुंसवनं (puṃsavanaṃ) - male-producing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वीराजननं (vīrājananaṃ) - hero-producing; अभिक्ष्णं (abhīkṣṇam) - frequently; गर्भिणी (garbhiṇī) - pregnant woman; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - hearing; ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; वीरं (vīram) - a hero; प्रजायते (prajāyate) - is born;]
(This is indeed male-producing and hero-producing; hearing frequently, a pregnant woman certainly gives birth to a hero.)
This ritual, known as Puṃsavana, is indeed for producing males and heroes; when a pregnant woman frequently hears about it, she is certain to give birth to a hero.
विद्याशूरं तपःशूरं दमशूरं तपस्विनम् । ब्राह्म्या श्रिया दीप्यमानं साधुवादेन संमतम् ॥५-१३४-१९॥
vidyāśūraṃ tapaḥśūraṃ damaśūraṃ tapasvinam । brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānaṃ sādhuvādena saṃmatam ॥5-134-19॥
[विद्याशूरं (vidyāśūraṃ) - heroic in knowledge; तपःशूरं (tapaḥśūraṃ) - heroic in penance; दमशूरं (damaśūraṃ) - heroic in self-control; तपस्विनम् (tapasvinam) - ascetic; ब्राह्म्या (brāhmyā) - with Brahmanic; श्रिया (śriyā) - splendor; दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānaṃ) - shining; साधुवादेन (sādhuvādena) - with praise; संमतम् (saṃmatam) - approved;]
(Heroic in knowledge, heroic in penance, heroic in self-control, ascetic, shining with Brahmanic splendor, approved with praise.)
The one who is heroic in knowledge, penance, and self-control, an ascetic shining with Brahmanic splendor, is approved and praised.
अर्चिष्मन्तं बलोपेतं महाभागं महारथम् । धृष्टवन्तमनाधृष्यं जेतारमपराजितम् ॥५-१३४-२०॥
arciṣmantaṃ balopetaṃ mahābhāgaṃ mahāratham । dhṛṣṭavantamanādhṛṣyaṃ jetāramaparājitam ॥5-134-20॥
[अर्चिष्मन्तं (arciṣmantaṃ) - radiant; बलोपेतं (balopetaṃ) - endowed with strength; महाभागं (mahābhāgaṃ) - highly fortunate; महारथम् (mahāratham) - great chariot-warrior; धृष्टवन्तम् (dhṛṣṭavantam) - bold; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - invincible; जेतारम् (jetāram) - conqueror; अपराजितम् (aparājitam) - undefeated;]

नियन्तारमसाधूनां गोप्तारं धर्मचारिणाम् । तदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते वीरं सत्यपराक्रमम् ॥५-१३४-२१॥
niyantāramasādhūnāṃ goptāraṃ dharmacāriṇām । tadarthaṃ kṣatriyā sūte vīraṃ satyaparākramam ॥5-134-21॥
[नियन्तारम् (niyantāram) - controller; असाधूनाम् (asādhūnām) - of the wicked; गोप्तारम् (goptāram) - protector; धर्मचारिणाम् (dharmacāriṇām) - of the righteous; तदर्थम् (tadartham) - for that purpose; क्षत्रिया (kṣatriyā) - a Kshatriya woman; सूते (sūte) - gives birth; वीरम् (vīram) - a hero; सत्यपराक्रमम् (satyaparākramam) - of true valor;]
(The controller of the wicked, protector of the righteous; for that purpose, a Kshatriya woman gives birth to a hero of true valor.)
