धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra spoke:
राजपुत्रैः परिवृतस्तथामात्यैश्च सञ्जय । उपारोप्य रथे कर्णं निर्यातो मधुसूदनः ॥५-१३८-१॥
Sanjaya, accompanied by princes and ministers, mounted Karna on the chariot, and Madhusudana departed.
किमब्रवीद्रथोपस्थे राधेयं परवीरहा । कानि सान्त्वानि गोविन्दः सूतपुत्रे प्रयुक्तवान् ॥५-१३८-२॥
What did the hero slayer say to Radheya on the chariot? What consolations did Govinda offer to the charioteer's son?
ओघमेघस्वनः काले यत्कृष्णः कर्णमब्रवीत् । मृदु वा यदि वा तीक्ष्णं तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥५-१३८-३॥
Sanjaya, tell me what Krishna said to Karna during the time of the flood and the sound of clouds, whether it was gentle or harsh.
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
आनुपूर्व्येण वाक्यानि श्लक्ष्णानि च मृदूनि च । प्रियाणि धर्मयुक्तानि सत्यानि च हितानि च ॥५-१३८-४॥
The sentences, arranged in sequence, are smooth, gentle, pleasing, righteous, truthful, and beneficial.
हृदयग्रहणीयानि राधेयं मधुसूदनः । यान्यब्रवीदमेयात्मा तानि मे शृणु भारत ॥५-१३८-५॥
Krishna, who captivates the heart, spoke to Karna. O Bharata, listen to those words that the immeasurable soul conveyed to me.
वासुदेव उवाच॥
Vasudeva spoke:
उपासितास्ते राधेय ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः । तत्त्वार्थं परिपृष्टाश्च नियतेनानसूयया ॥५-१३८-६॥
O son of Radha, those Brahmins who are well-versed in the Vedas were revered and consulted for the true meaning with discipline and without any envy.
त्वमेव कर्ण जानासि वेदवादान्सनातनान् । त्वं ह्येव धर्मशास्त्रेषु सूक्ष्मेषु परिनिष्ठितः ॥५-१३८-७॥
You, Karna, are well-versed in the eternal Vedic doctrines and are deeply established in the subtleties of the scriptures of law.
कानीनश्च सहोढश्च कन्यायां यश्च जायते । वोढारं पितरं तस्य प्राहुः शास्त्रविदो जनाः ॥५-१३८-८॥
The scholars declare that the husband is considered the father of a child born to a girl, whether conceived before or after marriage.
सोऽसि कर्ण तथा जातः पाण्डोः पुत्रोऽसि धर्मतः । निग्रहाद्धर्मशास्त्राणामेहि राजा भविष्यसि ॥५-१३८-९॥
You are Karṇa, thus born as the son of Pāṇḍu by law. By adhering to the scriptures, come, you shall become king.
पितृपक्षे हि ते पार्था मातृपक्षे च वृष्णयः । द्वौ पक्षावभिजानीहि त्वमेतौ पुरुषर्षभ ॥५-१३८-१०॥
Indeed, O best of men, your sons of Pritha belong to the paternal side, and the Vrishnis belong to the maternal side. Recognize these two sides.
मया सार्धमितो यातमद्य त्वां तात पाण्डवाः । अभिजानन्तु कौन्तेयं पूर्वजातं युधिष्ठिरात् ॥५-१३८-११॥
Today, with me, you have gone from here, father, so that the Pāṇḍavas may recognize you, the son of Kunti, as the elder born from Yudhishthira.
पादौ तव ग्रहीष्यन्ति भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः । द्रौपदेयास्तथा पञ्च सौभद्रश्चापराजितः ॥५-१३८-१२॥
Your feet will be touched by the five Pāṇḍava brothers, the five sons of Draupadī, and the undefeated son of Subhadrā.
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च पाण्डवार्थे समागताः । पादौ तव ग्रहीष्यन्ति सर्वे चान्धकवृष्णयः ॥५-१३८-१३॥
The kings and princes have gathered for the cause of the Pāṇḍavas. All the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis will bow down to you.
हिरण्मयांश्च ते कुम्भान्राजतान्पार्थिवांस्तथा । ओषध्यः सर्वबीजानि सर्वरत्नानि वीरुधः ॥५-१३८-१४॥
Your golden and silver pots, as well as earthly ones; herbs, all seeds, all gems, and plants.
राजन्या राजकन्याश्चाप्यानयन्त्वभिषेचनम् । षष्ठे च त्वां तथा काले द्रौपद्युपगमिष्यति ॥५-१३८-१५॥
The kings and princesses should also bring the consecration. On the sixth day, Draupadi will come to you at the appointed time.
अद्य त्वामभिषिञ्चन्तु चातुर्वैद्या द्विजातयः । पुरोहितः पाण्डवानां व्याघ्रचर्मण्यवस्थितम् ॥५-१३८-१६॥
Today, the learned Brahmins, well-versed in the four Vedas, may consecrate you, the priest of the Pandavas, as you sit upon the tiger skin.
तथैव भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः । द्रौपदेयास्तथा पञ्च पाञ्चालाश्चेदयस्तथा ॥५-१३८-१७॥
Similarly, the five brothers, the Pāṇḍavas, who are considered the best among men, and the five sons of Draupadī, along with the Pāñcālas and the Cedis, are also present.
अहं च त्वाभिषेक्ष्यामि राजानं पृथिवीपतिम् । युवराजोऽस्तु ते राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१३८-१८॥
I will anoint you as the king, the lord of the earth. Let your king be Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, as the crown prince.
गृहीत्वा व्यजनं श्वेतं धर्मात्मा संशितव्रतः । उपान्वारोहतु रथं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५-१३८-१९॥
Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, who was righteous and firm in his vows, took the white fan and ascended the chariot.
छत्रं च ते महच्छ्वेतं भीमसेनो महाबलः । अभिषिक्तस्य कौन्तेय कौन्तेयो धारयिष्यति ॥५-१३८-२०॥
Mighty Bhimasena will hold your great white umbrella for the anointed son of Kunti.
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषं वैयाघ्रपरिवारणम् । रथं श्वेतहयैर्युक्तमर्जुनो वाहयिष्यति ॥५-१३८-२१॥
Arjuna will drive the chariot, which is yoked with white horses and surrounded by the sound of a hundred bells, resembling a tiger.
अभिमन्युश्च ते नित्यं प्रत्यासन्नो भविष्यति । नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रौपदेयाश्च पञ्च ये ॥५-१३८-२२॥
Abhimanyu will always be near you. Nakula, Sahadeva, and the five sons of Draupadi will also be there.
पाञ्चालास्त्वानुयास्यन्ति शिखण्डी च महारथः । अहं च त्वानुयास्यामि सर्वे चान्धकवृष्णयः ॥ दाशार्हाः परिवारास्ते दाशार्णाश्च विशां पते ॥५-१३८-२३॥
The Panchalas, along with Shikhandi, the great chariot-warrior, will follow you. I, along with all the Andhakas and Vrishnis, will also follow you. The Dasharhas and their families, as well as the Dasharnas, will accompany us, O lord of men.
भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं महाबाहो भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः । जपैर्होमैश्च संयुक्तो मङ्गलैश्च पृथग्विधैः ॥५-१३८-२४॥
O mighty-armed one, enjoy the kingdom with your brothers, the Pāṇḍavas, performing various auspicious rites, mutterings, and oblations.
पुरोगमाश्च ते सन्तु द्रविडाः सह कुन्तलैः । आन्ध्रास्तालचराश्चैव चूचुपा वेणुपास्तथा ॥५-१३८-२५॥
The leaders may be Dravidians along with Kuntalas, Andhras, Talacharas, and indeed Chuchupas and Venupas.
स्तुवन्तु त्वाद्य बहुशः स्तुतिभिः सूतमागधाः । विजयं वसुषेणस्य घोषयन्तु च पाण्डवाः ॥५-१३८-२६॥
Today, let the bards and genealogists repeatedly praise you with their songs; let them proclaim the victory of Vasuṣena and the Pāṇḍavas.
स त्वं परिवृतः पार्थैर्नक्षत्रैरिव चन्द्रमाः । प्रशाधि राज्यं कौन्तेय कुन्तीं च प्रतिनन्दय ॥५-१३८-२७॥
You, like the moon surrounded by stars, are surrounded by the sons of Pritha. Rule the kingdom, O son of Kunti, and greet Kunti.
मित्राणि ते प्रहृष्यन्तु व्यथन्तु रिपवस्तथा । सौभ्रात्रं चैव तेऽद्यास्तु भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवैः ॥५-१३८-२८॥
May your friends be joyful and your enemies be troubled. Let there be brotherhood today with your brothers alongside the Pandavas.
