karṇa uvāca॥
Karna said:
rādheyo'hamādhirathiḥ karṇastvāmabhivādaye । prāptā kimarthaṃ bhavatī brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ॥5-143-1॥
I am Karna, son of Radha and Adhiratha, and I greet you. Please tell me the purpose of your visit and what I can do for you.
kuntyuvāca॥
Kunti spoke:
kaunteyastvaṁ na rādheyo na tavādhirathaḥ pitā । nāsi sūtakule jātaḥ karṇa tadviddhi me vacaḥ ॥5-143-2॥
Karna, you are actually the son of Kunti, not Radha, and Adhiratha is not your father. You were not born into a charioteer's family. Know this as my words.
kānīnastvaṃ mayā jātaḥ pūrvajaḥ kukṣiṇā dhṛtaḥ । kuntibhojasya bhavane pārthastvamasi putraka ॥5-143-3॥
You, my dear son, were born out of wedlock by me and held in the womb as an elder. In the house of Kuntibhoja, you are known as the son of Pritha.
prakāśakarmā tapano yo'yaṃ devo virocanaḥ । ajījanattvāṃ mayyeṣa karṇa śastrabhṛtāṃ varam ॥5-143-4॥
The god Virocana, known for his illuminating actions and burning nature, created you, Karna, as the best among weapon-bearers, within me.
kuṇḍalī baddhakavaco devagarbhaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ । jātastvamasi durdharṣa mayā putra piturgṛhe ॥5-143-5॥
You, who are coiled and armored, born of a divine womb and surrounded by splendor, are invincible, my son, born in your father's house.
sa tvaṃ bhrātṝnasambuddhvā mohādyadupasevase । dhārtarāṣṭrānna tadyuktaṃ tvayi putra viśeṣataḥ ॥5-143-6॥
It is not proper for you, my son, especially to serve the sons of Dhritarashtra without understanding your brothers due to delusion.
etaddharmaphalaṃ putra narāṇāṃ dharmaniścaye । yattuṣyantyasya pitaro mātā cāpyekadarśinī ॥5-143-7॥
This is the result of duty, O son, for men who are determined in their duty, which pleases his fathers and mother, who are also single-minded.
arjunenārjitāṃ pūrvaṃ hṛtāṃ lobhādasādhubhiḥ । ācchidya dhārtarāṣṭrebhyo bhuṅkṣva yaudhiṣṭhirīṃ śriyam ॥5-143-8॥
The prosperity that was once acquired by Arjuna and taken away by the wicked out of greed, having been snatched back from the sons of Dhritarashtra, enjoy the wealth of Yudhishthira.
adya paśyantu kuravaḥ karṇārjunasamāgamam । saubhrātreṇa tadālakṣya saṁnamantāmasādhavaḥ ॥5-143-9॥
Today, the Kurus shall witness the meeting of Karna and Arjuna. Observing this with a sense of brotherhood, let the wicked bow down.
karṇārjunau vai bhavatāṃ yathā rāmajanārdanau । asādhyaṃ kiṃ nu loke syādyuvayoḥ sahitātmanoḥ ॥5-143-10॥
Just as Rama and Janardana were invincible, so too are Karna and Arjuna when united in spirit; nothing in the world would be impossible for you two.
karṇa śobhiṣyase nūnaṃ pañcabhirbhrātṛbhirvṛtaḥ । vedaiḥ parivṛto brahmā yathā vedāṅgapañcamaiḥ ॥5-143-11॥
Karna, you will indeed shine surrounded by your five brothers, just as Brahma is surrounded by the Vedas and the five Vedangas.
upapanno guṇaiḥ śreṣṭho jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭheṣu bandhuṣu । sūtaputreti mā śabdaḥ pārthastvamasi vīryavān ॥5-143-12॥
You are endowed with qualities and are the best and eldest among the best of relatives. Do not use the term 'son of a charioteer', O son of Pritha, for you are valiant.
