Pancharatra-core: Keshava urges Yudhisthira to fight the war against evil Duryodhana.

Vaishampayana spoke:
वासुदेवस्य तद्वाक्यमनुस्मृत्य युधिष्ठिरः। पुनः पप्रच्छ वार्ष्णेयं कथं मन्दोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥५-१५१-१॥
vāsudevasya tadvākyamanusmṛtya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। punaḥ papraccha vārṣṇeyaṃ kathaṃ mando'bravīdidam ॥5-151-1॥

(Remembering that speech of Vasudeva, Yudhishthira again asked the descendant of Vrishni, how the slow-witted spoke this.)
Yudhishthira, recalling Vasudeva's words, inquired once more to the Vrishni descendant about how the slow-witted one expressed this.
अस्मिन्नभ्यागते काले किं च नः क्षममच्युत। कथं च वर्तमाना वै स्वधर्मान्न च्यवेमहि ॥५-१५१-२॥
asminn abhyāgate kāle kiṃ ca naḥ kṣamam acyuta। kathaṃ ca vartamānā vai svadharmān na cyavemahi ॥5-151-2॥

(In this arrived time, what is appropriate for us, O Acyuta? And how, indeed, remaining, do we not deviate from our own duty?)
O Acyuta, at this time of arrival, what is appropriate for us? And how can we ensure that we do not deviate from our duties?
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च। वासुदेव मतज्ञोऽसि मम सभ्रातृकस्य च ॥५-१५१-३॥
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca। vāsudeva matajño'si mama sabhrātṛkasya ca ॥5-151-3॥

Vasudeva, you understand the thoughts of Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, and Saubala, as well as mine and my brothers'.
विदुरस्यापि ते वाक्यं श्रुतं भीष्मस्य चोभयोः। कुन्त्याश्च विपुलप्रज्ञ प्रज्ञा कार्त्स्न्येन ते श्रुता ॥५-१५१-४॥
vidurasya api te vākyaṃ śrutaṃ bhīṣmasya ca ubhayoḥ। kuntyāś ca vipulaprajña prajñā kārtsnyena te śrutā ॥5-151-4॥

(The words of Vidura and Bhishma, and the great wisdom of Kunti, have been completely heard by you.)
You have completely heard the words of Vidura and Bhishma, as well as the profound wisdom of Kunti.
सर्वमेतदतिक्रम्य विचार्य च पुनः पुनः। यन्नः क्षमं महाबाहो तद्ब्रवीह्यविचारयन् ॥५-१५१-५॥
sarvam etad atikramya vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ। yan naḥ kṣamaṃ mahābāho tad bravīhy avicārayan ॥5-151-5॥
[सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etat) - this; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having surpassed; विचार्य (vicārya) - having considered; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यत् (yat) - which; नः (naḥ) - to us; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - suitable; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; तत् (tad) - that; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; अविचारयन् (avicārayan) - without hesitation;]
(Having surpassed all this and considered again and again, O mighty-armed, speak that which is suitable to us without hesitation.)
O mighty-armed one, after surpassing and considering everything repeatedly, please tell us what is appropriate without any hesitation.
श्रुत्वैतद्धर्मराजस्य धर्मार्थसहितं वचः। मेघदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषः कृष्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-१५१-६॥
śrutvaitaddharmarājasya dharmārthasahitaṃ vacaḥ। meghadundubhinirghoṣaḥ kṛṣṇo vacanamabravīt ॥5-151-6॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एतत् (etat) - this; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; धर्मार्थसहितं (dharmārthasahitaṃ) - with righteousness and meaning; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; मेघदुन्दुभि (meghadundubhi) - cloud-drum; निर्घोषः (nirghoṣaḥ) - sound; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having heard this speech of Dharmaraja, filled with righteousness and meaning, Krishna, with a sound like a cloud-drum, spoke the words.)
Upon hearing the righteous and meaningful words of Dharmaraja, Krishna, whose voice was as resonant as a thunderous cloud, responded.
उक्तवानस्मि यद्वाक्यं धर्मार्थसहितं हितम्। न तु तन्निकृतिप्रज्ञे कौरव्ये प्रतितिष्ठति ॥५-१५१-७॥
uktavān asmi yad vākyaṃ dharmārthasahitaṃ hitam। na tu tan nikṛtiprajñe kauravye pratitiṣṭhati ॥5-151-7॥
[उक्तवानस्मि (uktavān asmi) - I have spoken; यत् (yat) - which; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - sentence; धर्मार्थसहितम् (dharmārthasahitam) - with righteousness and purpose; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; निकृतिप्रज्ञे (nikṛtiprajñe) - to the deceitful wise; कौरव्ये (kauravye) - in the Kaurava; प्रतितिष्ठति (pratitiṣṭhati) - stands;]
(I have spoken the sentence which is with righteousness and purpose, beneficial. But that does not stand in the deceitful wise Kaurava.)
I have spoken words that are righteous and purposeful, beneficial indeed. However, they do not hold ground with the deceitful-minded Kaurava.
न च भीष्मस्य दुर्मेधाः शृणोति विदुरस्य वा। मम वा भाषितं किञ्चित्सर्वमेवातिवर्तते ॥५-१५१-८॥
na ca bhīṣmasya durmedhāḥ śṛṇoti vidurasya vā। mama vā bhāṣitaṃ kiñcitsarvamevātivartate ॥5-151-8॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; दुर्मेधाः (durmedhāḥ) - evil-minded; शृणोति (śṛṇoti) - hears; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; वा (vā) - or; मम (mama) - my; वा (vā) - or; भाषितं (bhāṣitaṃ) - speech; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; एव (eva) - indeed; अतिवर्तते (ativartate) - overrides;]
(And the evil-minded does not hear anything of Bhishma, or of Vidura, or my speech; everything indeed overrides.)
The evil-minded person ignores the words of Bhishma, Vidura, and myself, disregarding everything completely.
न स कामयते धर्मं न स कामयते यशः। जितं स मन्यते सर्वं दुरात्मा कर्णमाश्रितः ॥५-१५१-९॥
na sa kāmayate dharmaṃ na sa kāmayate yaśaḥ। jitaṃ sa manyate sarvaṃ durātmā karṇamāśritaḥ ॥5-151-9॥
[न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; कामयते (kāmayate) - desires; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - virtue; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; कामयते (kāmayate) - desires; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; जितं (jitaṃ) - conquered; स (sa) - he; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - everything; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul; कर्णमाश्रितः (karṇamāśritaḥ) - dependent on Karna;]
(He does not desire virtue, he does not desire fame. The wicked soul, dependent on Karna, thinks he has conquered everything.)
He neither desires virtue nor fame. The wicked soul, relying on Karna, believes he has conquered all.
बन्धमाज्ञापयामास मम चापि सुयोधनः। न च तं लब्धवान्कामं दुरात्मा शासनातिगः ॥५-१५१-१०॥
bandham ājñāpayām āsa mama cāpi suyodhanaḥ। na ca taṃ labdhavān kāmaṃ durātmā śāsanātigaḥ ॥5-151-10॥
[बन्धम् (bandham) - bondage; आज्ञापयामास (ājñāpayām āsa) - ordered; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - that; लब्धवान् (labdhavān) - obtained; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; दुरात्मा (durātmā) - wicked soul; शासनातिगः (śāsanātigaḥ) - disobedient;]
(Suyodhana also ordered my bondage, and the wicked soul did not obtain that desire, being disobedient.)

न च भीष्मो न च द्रोणो युक्तं तत्राहतुर्वचः। सर्वे तमनुवर्तन्ते ऋते विदुरमच्युत ॥५-१५१-११॥
na ca bhīṣmo na ca droṇo yuktaṃ tatrāhaturvacaḥ। sarve tamanuvartante ṛte viduramacyuta ॥5-151-11॥

शकुनिः सौबलश्चैव कर्णदुःशासनावपि। त्वय्ययुक्तान्यभाषन्त मूढा मूढममर्षणम् ॥५-१५१-१२॥
śakuniḥ saubalaścaiva karṇaduḥśāsanāvapi। tvayyayuktānyabhāṣanta mūḍhā mūḍhamamarṣaṇam ॥5-151-12॥

kiṁ ca tena mayoktena yānyabhāṣanta kauravāḥ। saṅkṣepena durātmāsau na yuktaṁ tvayi vartate ॥5-151-13॥

न पार्थिवेषु सर्वेषु य इमे तव सैनिकाः। यत्पापं यन्न कल्याणं सर्वं तस्मिन्प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥५-१५१-१४॥
na pārthiveṣu sarveṣu ya ime tava sainikāḥ। yatpāpaṃ yanna kalyāṇaṃ sarvaṃ tasminpratiṣṭhitam ॥5-151-14॥

(Not among all the earthly who are these your soldiers, what sin, what not auspicious, all is established in that.)
Among all the earthly beings, your soldiers are not the ones in whom all sins and inauspiciousness are established.
न चापि वयमत्यर्थं परित्यागेन कर्हिचित्। कौरवैः शममिच्छामस्तत्र युद्धमनन्तरम् ॥५-१५१-१५॥
na cāpi vayamatyarthaṃ parityāgena karhicit। kauravaiḥ śamamicchāmas-tatra yuddhamanantaram ॥5-151-15॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वयम् (vayam) - we; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; परित्यागेन (parityāgena) - by renunciation; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever; कौरवैः (kauravaiḥ) - with the Kauravas; शमम् (śamam) - peace; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we desire; तत्र (tatra) - there; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - after;]
(And we do not ever excessively desire peace with the Kauravas by renunciation; there, after war.)
We do not wish for peace with the Kauravas at any cost; rather, we seek it after the war.
तच्छ्रुत्वा पार्थिवाः सर्वे वासुदेवस्य भाषितम्। अब्रुवन्तो मुखं राज्ञः समुदैक्षन्त भारत ॥५-१५१-१६॥
tacchrutvā pārthivāḥ sarve vāsudevasya bhāṣitam। abruvanto mukhaṃ rājñaḥ samudaikṣanta bhārata ॥5-151-16॥

(Having heard that, all the kings looked at the face of the king, O Bharata, speaking the speech of Vasudeva.)
Upon hearing Vasudeva's words, all the kings turned their gaze towards the king's face, O Bharata.
युधिष्ठिरस्त्वभिप्रायमुपलभ्य महीक्षिताम्। योगमाज्ञापयामास भीमार्जुनयमैः सह ॥५-१५१-१७॥
yudhiṣṭhirastvabhiprāyamupalabhya mahīkṣitām। yogamājñāpayāmāsa bhīmārjunayamaiḥ saha ॥5-151-17॥

ततः किलकिलाभूतमनीकं पाण्डवस्य ह। आज्ञापिते तदा योगे समहृष्यन्त सैनिकाः ॥५-१५१-१८॥
tataḥ kilakilābhūtamanīkaṃ pāṇḍavasya ha। ājñāpite tadā yoge samahṛṣyanta sainikāḥ ॥5-151-18॥

अवध्यानां वधं पश्यन्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। निष्टनन्भीमसेनं च विजयं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥५-१५१-१९॥
avadhyānāṃ vadhaṃ paśyandharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। niṣṭananbhīmasenaṃ ca vijayaṃ cedamabravīt ॥5-151-19॥

(Seeing the killing of the inviolable, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, sighing, said this to Bhimasena and Vijaya.)
Witnessing the slaughter of those who should not be killed, Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness, sighed and spoke to Bhimasena and Arjuna.
यदर्थं वनवासश्च प्राप्तं दुःखं च यन्मया। सोऽयमस्मानुपैत्येव परोऽनर्थः प्रयत्नतः ॥५-१५१-२०॥
yadarthaṃ vanavāsaśca prāptaṃ duḥkhaṃ ca yanmayā। so'yamasmānupai tyeva paro'narthaḥ prayatnataḥ ॥5-151-20॥
[यदर्थं (yadarthaṃ) - for which purpose; वनवासः (vanavāsaḥ) - forest dwelling; च (ca) - and; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - obtained; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - suffering; च (ca) - and; यन्मया (yanmayā) - which by me; सः (saḥ) - that; अयम् (ayam) - this; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उपैति (upaiti) - approaches; एव (eva) - indeed; परः (paraḥ) - another; अनर्थः (anarthaḥ) - misfortune; प्रयत्नतः (prayatnataḥ) - by effort;]
(For which purpose the forest dwelling and suffering were obtained by me, this indeed approaches us as another misfortune by effort.)
The purpose for which I endured the forest dwelling and suffering now indeed approaches us as another misfortune despite all efforts.
यस्मिन्यत्नः कृतोऽस्माभिः स नो हीनः प्रयत्नतः। अकृते तु प्रयत्नेऽस्मानुपावृत्तः कलिर्महान् ॥५-१५१-२१॥
yasmin yatnaḥ kṛto'smābhiḥ sa no hīnaḥ prayatnataḥ। akṛte tu prayatne'smānupāvṛttaḥ kalir mahān ॥5-151-21॥
[यस्मिन (yasmin) - in which; यत्नः (yatnaḥ) - effort; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; सः (saḥ) - that; नः (naḥ) - not; हीनः (hīnaḥ) - deficient; प्रयत्नतः (prayatnataḥ) - by effort; अकृते (akṛte) - not made; तु (tu) - but; प्रयत्ने (prayatne) - in effort; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; उपावृत्तः (upāvṛttaḥ) - has turned; कलिः (kaliḥ) - Kali; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(In which effort was made by us, that is not deficient by effort. But in effort not made, the great Kali has turned upon us.)
The effort we made was not lacking, but where effort was absent, the great Kali has come upon us.
कथं ह्यवध्यैः सङ्ग्रामः कार्यः सह भविष्यति। कथं हत्वा गुरून्वृद्धान्विजयो नो भविष्यति ॥५-१५१-२२॥
kathaṁ hyavadhyaiḥ saṅgrāmaḥ kāryaḥ saha bhaviṣyati. kathaṁ hatvā gurūnvṛddhānvijayo no bhaviṣyati ॥5-151-22॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अवध्यैः (avadhyaiḥ) - with the invincible; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; सह (saha) - with; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; गुरून् (gurūn) - teachers; वृद्धान् (vṛddhān) - elders; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; नः (naḥ) - our; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(How indeed will a battle be done with the invincible? How, having killed teachers and elders, will our victory be?)
How can a battle be fought with those who are invincible? How can we achieve victory by killing our teachers and elders?
तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य सव्यसाची परन्तपः। यदुक्तं वासुदेवेन श्रावयामास तद्वचः ॥५-१५१-२३॥
tacchrutvā dharmarājasya savyasācī parantapaḥ। yaduktaṃ vāsudevena śrāvayāmāsa tadvacaḥ ॥5-151-23॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Arjuna; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; यत् (yat) - what; उक्तं (uktaṃ) - was said; वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vasudeva; श्रावयामास (śrāvayāmāsa) - caused to be heard; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having heard that, Arjuna, the scorcher of foes, caused the speech said by Vasudeva to be heard to Dharmaraja.)
Upon hearing this, Arjuna, the mighty warrior, conveyed the message spoken by Lord Krishna to King Yudhishthira.
उक्तवान्देवकीपुत्रः कुन्त्याश्च विदुरस्य च। वचनं तत्त्वया राजन्निखिलेनावधारितम् ॥५-१५१-२४॥
uktavān devakīputraḥ kuntyāś ca vidurasya ca। vacanaṃ tattvayā rājan nikhilenāvadhāritam ॥5-151-24॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; देवकीपुत्रः (devakīputraḥ) - son of Devaki; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kunti; च (ca) - and; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; च (ca) - and; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - words; तत्त्वया (tattvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O King; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - completely; अवधारितम् (avadhāritam) - understood;]
(The son of Devaki, and of Kunti and Vidura, said: O King, the words were completely understood by you.)
The son of Devaki, Krishna, addressed the words of Kunti and Vidura, saying: O King, you have completely understood the message.
न च तौ वक्ष्यतोऽधर्ममिति मे नैष्ठिकी मतिः। न चापि युक्तं कौन्तेय निवर्तितुमयुध्यतः ॥५-१५१-२५॥
na ca tau vakṣyato'dharmamiti me naiṣṭhikī matiḥ। na cāpi yuktaṃ kaunteya nivartitumayudhyataḥ ॥5-151-25॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - they; वक्ष्यतः (vakṣyataḥ) - will speak; अधर्मम् (adharmam) - unrighteousness; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; नैष्ठिकी (naiṣṭhikī) - firm; मतिः (matiḥ) - belief; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; निवर्तितुम् (nivartitum) - to retreat; अयुध्यतः (ayudhyataḥ) - from fighting;]
(And they will not speak unrighteousness, thus is my firm belief. And it is not proper, O son of Kunti, to retreat from fighting.)
I firmly believe that they will not speak anything unrighteous. Moreover, O son of Kunti, it is not appropriate to retreat from the battle.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवोऽपि सव्यसाचिवचस्तदा। स्मयमानोऽब्रवीत्पार्थमेवमेतदिति ब्रुवन् ॥५-१५१-२६॥
tacchrutvā vāsudevo'pi savyasācivacastadā। smayamāno'bravītpārthamevametaditi bruvan ॥5-151-26॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; अपि (api) - also; सव्यसाचि (savyasāci) - Savyasaci; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तदा (tadā) - then; स्मयमानः (smayamānaḥ) - smiling; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to Partha; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking;]
(Having heard that, Vasudeva also, smiling, said to Partha, "Thus is this," speaking thus.)
Upon hearing those words from Savyasaci, Vasudeva, with a smile, said to Partha, "Indeed, it is so," affirming thus.
ततस्ते धृतसङ्कल्पा युद्धाय सहसैनिकाः। पाण्डवेया महाराज तां रात्रिं सुखमावसन् ॥५-१५१-२७॥
tataste dhṛtasaṅkalpā yuddhāya sahasainikāḥ। pāṇḍaveyā mahārāja tāṃ rātriṃ sukhamāvasan ॥5-151-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; धृतसङ्कल्पाः (dhṛtasaṅkalpāḥ) - firm in resolve; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; सहसैनिकाः (sahasainikāḥ) - with soldiers; पाण्डवेयाः (pāṇḍaveyāḥ) - the sons of Pandu; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ताम् (tām) - that; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; आवसन् (āvasan) - spent;]
(Then they, firm in resolve, with soldiers, the sons of Pandu, O great king, spent that night happily.)
Then, O great king, the sons of Pandu, firm in their resolve and accompanied by their soldiers, spent that night happily.
