Pancharatra: Rukmi also visits and shows his arrogance telling he will help. Arjuna rejects his help and Rukmi proceeds on a pilgrimage.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु भीष्मकस्य महात्मनः। हिरण्यलोम्नो नृपतेः साक्षादिन्द्रसखस्य वै ॥५-१५५-१॥
At this very time, Bhishmaka, the great soul and king Hiranyaloma, who was indeed a direct friend of Indra.
आहृतीनामधिपतेर्भोजस्यातियशस्विनः। दाक्षिणात्यपतेः पुत्रो दिक्षु रुक्मीति विश्रुतः ॥५-१५५-२॥
Rukmi, the son of the illustrious Bhoja, lord of offerings and the southern region, is renowned in all directions.
यः किम्पुरुषसिंहस्य गन्धमादनवासिनः। शिष्यः कृत्स्नं धनुर्वेदं चतुष्पादमवाप्तवान् ॥५-१५५-३॥
He was the disciple of Kimpurusha Simha, who lived in Gandhamadana, and he mastered the entire fourfold Dhanurveda.
यो माहेन्द्रं धनुर्लेभे तुल्यं गाण्डीवतेजसा। शार्ङ्गेण च महाबाहुः संमितं दिव्यमक्षयम् ॥५-१५५-४॥
The mighty-armed one who obtained the bow of Indra, comparable to the divine and inexhaustible Gandiva in splendor, along with the Sharnga bow.
त्रीण्येवैतानि दिव्यानि धनूंषि दिविचारिणाम्। वारुणं गाण्डिवं तत्र माहेन्द्रं विजयं धनुः ॥५-१५५-५॥
There are three divine bows of the celestial beings: Varuna's bow, Gandiva, and Mahendra's Vijaya bow.
शार्ङ्गं तु वैष्णवं प्राहुर्दिव्यं तेजोमयं धनुः। धारयामास यत्कृष्णः परसेनाभयावहम् ॥५-१५५-६॥
Śārṅga, the divine and radiant bow of Viṣṇu, was held by Kṛṣṇa to dispel the fear of the enemy forces.
गाण्डीवं पावकाल्लेभे खाण्डवे पाकशासनिः। द्रुमाद्रुक्मी महातेजा विजयं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥५-१५५-७॥
In the Khandava forest, Indra obtained the Gandiva bow from the fire; the mighty destroyer of trees achieved victory.
सञ्छिद्य मौरवान्पाशान्निहत्य मुरमोजसा। निर्जित्य नरकं भौममाहृत्य मणिकुण्डले ॥५-१५५-८॥
Krishna cut off the bonds of the Mauravas, killed the demon Mura with his strength, conquered Naraka, the son of Bhumi, and retrieved the jeweled earrings.
षोडश स्त्रीसहस्राणि रत्नानि विविधानि च। प्रतिपेदे हृषीकेशः शार्ङ्गं च धनुरुत्तमम् ॥५-१५५-९॥
Hṛṣīkeśa acquired sixteen thousand women, various jewels, and the excellent bow named Śārṅga.
रुक्मी तु विजयं लब्ध्वा धनुर्मेघसमस्वनम्। विभीषयन्निव जगत्पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तत ॥५-१५५-१०॥
Rukmi, after achieving victory, advanced with his bow that roared like thunder, seemingly striking fear into the world and the Pandavas.
नामृष्यत पुरा योऽसौ स्वबाहुबलदर्पितः। रुक्मिण्या हरणं वीरो वासुदेवेन धीमता ॥५-१५५-११॥
The hero who was once proud of his own strength could not tolerate the wise Vasudeva abducting Rukmini.
कृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां नाहत्वा निवर्तिष्यामि केशवम्। ततोऽन्वधावद्वार्ष्णेयं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥५-१५५-१२॥
After making a vow not to return without killing Keshava, he pursued the Vrishni hero, the foremost among all warriors.
सेनया चतुरङ्गिण्या महत्या दूरपातया। विचित्रायुधवर्मिण्या गङ्गयेव प्रवृद्धया ॥५-१५५-१३॥
With a great and far-reaching army, equipped with varied weapons and armor, like the mighty Ganges.
स समासाद्य वार्ष्णेयं योगानामीश्वरं प्रभुम्। व्यंसितो व्रीडितो राजन्नाजगाम स कुण्डिनम् ॥५-१५५-१४॥
He approached the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the lord of yogis, but feeling disappointed and ashamed, he went to Kundina, O king.
यत्रैव कृष्णेन रणे निर्जितः परवीरहा। तत्र भोजकटं नाम चक्रे नगरमुत्तमम् ॥५-१५५-१५॥
In the place where Krishna, the slayer of enemy heroes, was victorious in battle, he established the excellent city named Bhojakata.
सैन्येन महता तेन प्रभूतगजवाजिना। पुरं तद्भुवि विख्यातं नाम्ना भोजकटं नृप ॥५-१५५-१६॥
O king, the city named Bhojakata was renowned on earth for its great army filled with numerous elephants and horses.
स भोजराजः सैन्येन महता परिवारितः। अक्षौहिण्या महावीर्यः पाण्डवान्समुपागमत् ॥५-१५५-१७॥
King Bhoja, with his formidable army, approached the Pandavas, showcasing his immense strength and strategic prowess.
ततः स कवची खड्गी शरी धन्वी तली रथी। ध्वजेनादित्यवर्णेन प्रविवेश महाचमूम् ॥५-१५५-१८॥
Then he, equipped with armor, sword, arrows, bow, shield, and chariot, and carrying a sun-colored banner, entered the great army.
विदितः पाण्डवेयानां वासुदेवप्रियेप्सया। युधिष्ठिरस्तु तं राजा प्रत्युद्गम्याभ्यपूजयत् ॥५-१५५-१९॥
Yudhishthira, known for his desire to please Vasudeva, went to meet and honor him on behalf of the Pandavas.
स पूजितः पाण्डुसुतैर्यथान्यायं सुसत्कृतः। प्रतिपूज्य च तान्सर्वान्विश्रान्तः सहसैनिकः ॥ उवाच मध्ये वीराणां कुन्तीपुत्रं धनञ्जयम् ॥५-१५५-२०॥
He was honored by the sons of Pandu according to the custom and was well-received. After reciprocating to all of them, he rested with his soldiers and spoke to Kunti's son, Dhananjaya, in the midst of the heroes.
सहायोऽस्मि स्थितो युद्धे यदि भीतोऽसि पाण्डव। करिष्यामि रणे साह्यमसह्यं तव शत्रुभिः ॥५-१५५-२१॥
I am here to assist you in battle, O Pāṇḍava. If you are afraid, I will offer support in the battle that your enemies cannot withstand.
न हि मे विक्रमे तुल्यः पुमानस्तीह कश्चन। निहत्य समरे शत्रूंस्तव दास्यामि फल्गुन ॥५-१५५-२२॥
Indeed, there is no one here who matches my prowess. O Phalguna, after defeating the enemies in battle, I shall present them to you.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजस्य केशवस्य च संनिधौ। शृण्वतां पार्थिवेन्द्राणामन्येषां चैव सर्वशः ॥५-१५५-२३॥
Thus, it was spoken in the presence of Dharmaraja and Keshava, while all the kings and others were listening attentively.
वासुदेवमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजं च पाण्डवम्। उवाच धीमान्कौन्तेयः प्रहस्य सखिपूर्वकम् ॥५-१५५-२४॥
The wise son of Kunti, smiling and in a friendly manner, addressed Vasudeva and Dharmaraja.
युध्यमानस्य मे वीर गन्धर्वैः सुमहाबलैः। सहायो घोषयात्रायां कस्तदासीत्सखा मम ॥५-१५५-२५॥
Who was my friend in the grand procession when my hero was fighting with the mighty Gandharvas?
तथा प्रतिभये तस्मिन्देवदानवसङ्कुले। खाण्डवे युध्यमानस्य कः सहायस्तदाभवत् ॥५-१५५-२६॥
In the terrifying Khāṇḍava forest, filled with gods and demons, who was there to assist the warrior at that time?
निवातकवचैर्युद्धे कालकेयैश्च दानवैः। तत्र मे युध्यमानस्य कः सहायस्तदाभवत् ॥५-१५५-२७॥
In the battle with the Nivatakavacas, Kalakeyas, and Danavas, who was there to assist me at that time?
तथा विराटनगरे कुरुभिः सह सङ्गरे। युध्यतो बहुभिस्तात कः सहायोऽभवन्मम ॥५-१५५-२८॥
In the city of Virata, during the battle with the Kauravas, who stood by my side, O dear, as my ally?
उपजीव्य रणे रुद्रं शक्रं वैश्रवणं यमम्। वरुणं पावकं चैव कृपं द्रोणं च माधवम् ॥५-१५५-२९॥
In battle, relying on the mighty deities and warriors like Rudra, Indra, Kubera, Yama, Varuna, Agni, Kripa, Drona, and Madhava.
धारयन्गाण्डिवं दिव्यं धनुस्तेजोमयं दृढम्। अक्षय्यशरसंयुक्तो दिव्यास्त्रपरिबृंहितः ॥५-१५५-३०॥
He held the divine Gandiva bow, which was radiant and firm, equipped with inexhaustible arrows and adorned with divine weapons.
कौरवाणां कुले जातः पाण्डोः पुत्रो विशेषतः। द्रोणं व्यपदिशञ्शिष्यो वासुदेवसहायवान् ॥५-१५५-३१॥
He was born in the Kaurava family, particularly as the son of Pandu, and was known as the disciple of Drona, with the support of Vasudeva.
कथमस्मद्विधो ब्रूयाद्भीतोऽस्मीत्ययशस्करम्। वचनं नरशार्दूल वज्रायुधमपि स्वयम् ॥५-१५५-३२॥
How could someone like me, a warrior, admit to fear, which is disgraceful, O tiger among men, even in front of Indra himself?
नास्मि भीतो महाबाहो सहायार्थश्च नास्ति मे। यथाकामं यथायोगं गच्छ वान्यत्र तिष्ठ वा ॥५-१५५-३३॥
I am not afraid, O mighty-armed one, nor do I need any assistance. You may go or stay elsewhere as you desire.
विनिवर्त्य ततो रुक्मी सेनां सागरसंनिभाम्। दुर्योधनमुपागच्छत्तथैव भरतर्षभ ॥५-१५५-३४॥
Then, Rukmi turned back and approached Duryodhana's army, which was vast like the ocean, in the same manner, O best of the Bharatas.
तथैव चाभिगम्यैनमुवाच स नराधिपः। प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनापि स तदा शूरमानिना ॥५-१५५-३५॥
In the same manner, the king approached him and spoke. However, he was rejected by the proud warrior at that time.
द्वावेव तु महाराज तस्माद्युद्धाद्व्यपेयतुः। रौहिणेयश्च वार्ष्णेयो रुक्मी च वसुधाधिपः ॥५-१५५-३६॥
O great king, two warriors withdrew from the battle: the son of Rohini, the descendant of Vrishni, and Rukmi, the lord of the earth.
गते रामे तीर्थयात्रां भीष्मकस्य सुते तथा। उपाविशन्पाण्डवेया मन्त्राय पुनरेव हि ॥५-१५५-३७॥
After Rama and the son of Bhishmaka had gone on their pilgrimage, the Pandavas sat down once more for a consultation.
समितिर्धर्मराजस्य सा पार्थिवसमाकुला। शुशुभे तारकाचित्रा द्यौश्चन्द्रेणेव भारत ॥५-१५५-३८॥
The assembly of King Yudhishthira, filled with kings, shone like a starry sky with the moon, O Bharata.
