Pancharatra: Rukmi also visits and shows his arrogance telling he will help. Arjuna rejects his help and Rukmi proceeds on a pilgrimage.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke.
etasmínneva kāle tu bhīṣmakasya mahātmanaḥ। hiraṇyalomno nṛpateḥ sākṣādindrasakhasya vai ॥5-155-1॥
At this very time, Bhishmaka, the great soul and king Hiranyaloma, who was indeed a direct friend of Indra.
āhṛtīnām-adhipater-bhojasya-atiyaśasvinaḥ। dākṣiṇātyapateḥ putro dikṣu rukmīti viśrutaḥ ॥5-155-2॥
Rukmi, the son of the illustrious Bhoja, lord of offerings and the southern region, is renowned in all directions.
yaḥ kimpuruṣasiṃhasya gandhamādanavāsinaḥ। śiṣyaḥ kṛtsnaṃ dhanurvedaṃ catuṣpādamavāptavān ॥5-155-3॥
He was the disciple of Kimpurusha Simha, who lived in Gandhamadana, and he mastered the entire fourfold Dhanurveda.
yo māhendraṃ dhanurlebhe tulyaṃ gāṇḍīvatejasā. śārṅgeṇa ca mahābāhuḥ saṃmitaṃ divyamakṣayam ॥5-155-4॥
The mighty-armed one who obtained the bow of Indra, comparable to the divine and inexhaustible Gandiva in splendor, along with the Sharnga bow.
trīṇyevetāni divyāni dhanūṃṣi divicāriṇām। vāruṇaṃ gāṇḍivaṃ tatra māhendraṃ vijayaṃ dhanuḥ ॥5-155-5॥
There are three divine bows of the celestial beings: Varuna's bow, Gandiva, and Mahendra's Vijaya bow.
śārṅgaṃ tu vaiṣṇavaṃ prāhurdivyaṃ tejomayaṃ dhanuḥ। dhārayāmāsa yatkṛṣṇaḥ parasenābhayāvaham ॥5-155-6॥
Śārṅga, the divine and radiant bow of Viṣṇu, was held by Kṛṣṇa to dispel the fear of the enemy forces.
gāṇḍīvaṃ pāvakāllebhe khāṇḍave pākaśāsaniḥ। drumādrukmī mahātejā vijayaṃ pratyapadyata ॥5-155-7॥
In the Khandava forest, Indra obtained the Gandiva bow from the fire; the mighty destroyer of trees achieved victory.
sañchidya mauravān pāśān nihatya muram ojasā। nirjitya narakaṃ bhaumam āhṛtya maṇikuṇḍale ॥5-155-8॥
Krishna cut off the bonds of the Mauravas, killed the demon Mura with his strength, conquered Naraka, the son of Bhumi, and retrieved the jeweled earrings.
ṣoḍaśa strīsahasrāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca। pratipede hṛṣīkeśaḥ śārṅgaṃ ca dhanuruttamam ॥5-155-9॥
Hṛṣīkeśa acquired sixteen thousand women, various jewels, and the excellent bow named Śārṅga.
rukmī tu vijayaṃ labdhvā dhanurmeghasamasvanam। vibhīṣayanniva jagatpāṇḍavānabhyavartata ॥5-155-10॥
Rukmi, after achieving victory, advanced with his bow that roared like thunder, seemingly striking fear into the world and the Pandavas.
nāmṛṣyata purā yo'sau svabāhubaladarpitaḥ। rukmiṇyā haraṇaṃ vīro vāsudevena dhīmatā ॥5-155-11॥
The hero who was once proud of his own strength could not tolerate the wise Vasudeva abducting Rukmini.
kṛtvā pratijñāṃ nāhatvā nivartiṣyāmi keśavam। tato'nvadhāvadvārṣṇeyaṃ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varam ॥5-155-12॥
After making a vow not to return without killing Keshava, he pursued the Vrishni hero, the foremost among all warriors.
senayā caturaṅgiṇyā mahatyā dūrapātayā। vicitrāyudhavarminyā gaṅgayeva pravṛddhayā ॥5-155-13॥
With a great and far-reaching army, equipped with varied weapons and armor, like the mighty Ganges.
sa samāsādya vārṣṇeyaṃ yogānāmīśvaraṃ prabhum। vyaṃsito vrīḍito rājannājagāma sa kuṇḍinam ॥5-155-14॥
He approached the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the lord of yogis, but feeling disappointed and ashamed, he went to Kundina, O king.
yatraiva kṛṣṇena raṇe nirjitaḥ paravīrahā। tatra bhojakaṭaṃ nāma cakre nagaramuttamam ॥5-155-15॥
In the place where Krishna, the slayer of enemy heroes, was victorious in battle, he established the excellent city named Bhojakata.
sainyena mahatā tena prabhūtagajavājinā. puraṃ tadbhuvi vikhyātaṃ nāmnā bhojakaṭaṃ nṛpa ॥5-155-16॥
O king, the city named Bhojakata was renowned on earth for its great army filled with numerous elephants and horses.
sa bhojarājaḥ sainyena mahatā parivāritaḥ। akṣauhiṇyā mahāvīryaḥ pāṇḍavānsamupāgamat ॥5-155-17॥
King Bhoja, with his formidable army, approached the Pandavas, showcasing his immense strength and strategic prowess.
tataḥ sa kavacī khaḍgī śarī dhanvī talī rathī। dhvajenādityavarṇena praviveśa mahācamūm ॥5-155-18॥
Then he, equipped with armor, sword, arrows, bow, shield, and chariot, and carrying a sun-colored banner, entered the great army.
viditaḥ pāṇḍaveyānāṃ vāsudevapriyepasayā। yudhiṣṭhirastu taṃ rājā pratyudgamyābhyapūjayat ॥5-155-19॥
Yudhishthira, known for his desire to please Vasudeva, went to meet and honor him on behalf of the Pandavas.
sa pūjitaḥ pāṇḍusutairyathānyāyaṃ susatkṛtaḥ। pratipūjya ca tānsarvānvishrāntaḥ sahasainikaḥ ॥ uvāca madhye vīrāṇāṃ kuntīputraṃ dhanañjayam ॥5-155-20॥
He was honored by the sons of Pandu according to the custom and was well-received. After reciprocating to all of them, he rested with his soldiers and spoke to Kunti's son, Dhananjaya, in the midst of the heroes.
sahāyo'smi sthito yuddhe yadi bhīto'si pāṇḍava। kariṣyāmi raṇe sāhyamasahyaṃ tava śatrubhiḥ ॥5-155-21॥
I am here to assist you in battle, O Pāṇḍava. If you are afraid, I will offer support in the battle that your enemies cannot withstand.
na hi me vikrame tulyaḥ pumānastīha kaścana। nihatya samare śatrūṃstava dāsyāmi phalguna ॥5-155-22॥
Indeed, there is no one here who matches my prowess. O Phalguna, after defeating the enemies in battle, I shall present them to you.
ityukto dharmarājasya keśavasya ca saṃnidhau। śṛṇvatāṃ pārthivendrāṇāmanyeṣāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ ॥5-155-23॥
Thus, it was spoken in the presence of Dharmaraja and Keshava, while all the kings and others were listening attentively.
vāsudevam abhiprekṣya dharmarājaṃ ca pāṇḍavam। uvāca dhīmān kaunteyaḥ prahasya sakhipūrvakam ॥5-155-24॥
The wise son of Kunti, smiling and in a friendly manner, addressed Vasudeva and Dharmaraja.
yudhyamānasya me vīra gandharvaiḥ sumahābalaiḥ। sahāyo ghoṣayātrāyāṃ kastadāsītsakhā mama ॥5-155-25॥
Who was my friend in the grand procession when my hero was fighting with the mighty Gandharvas?
tathā pratibhaye tasmin devadānava-saṅkule। khāṇḍave yudhyamānasya kaḥ sahāyas tadā abhavat ॥5-155-26॥
In the terrifying Khāṇḍava forest, filled with gods and demons, who was there to assist the warrior at that time?
nivātakavacairyuddhe kālakeyaśca dānavaiḥ। tatra me yudhyamānasya kaḥ sahāyastadābhavat ॥5-155-27॥
In the battle with the Nivatakavacas, Kalakeyas, and Danavas, who was there to assist me at that time?
tathā virāṭanagare kurubhiḥ saha saṅgare। yudhyato bahubhistāta kaḥ sahāyo'bhavanmama ॥5-155-28॥
In the city of Virata, during the battle with the Kauravas, who stood by my side, O dear, as my ally?
upajīvya raṇe rudraṃ śakraṃ vaiśravaṇaṃ yamam। varuṇaṃ pāvakaṃ caiva kṛpaṃ droṇaṃ ca mādhavam ॥5-155-29॥
In battle, relying on the mighty deities and warriors like Rudra, Indra, Kubera, Yama, Varuna, Agni, Kripa, Drona, and Madhava.
dhārayan gāṇḍivaṃ divyaṃ dhanus tejomayaṃ dṛḍham। akṣayyaśarasaṃyukto divyāstraparibhṛṃhitaḥ ॥5-155-30॥
He held the divine Gandiva bow, which was radiant and firm, equipped with inexhaustible arrows and adorned with divine weapons.
kauravāṇāṃ kule jātaḥ pāṇḍoḥ putro viśeṣataḥ। droṇaṃ vyapadiśañśiṣyo vāsudevasahāyavān ॥5-155-31॥
He was born in the Kaurava family, particularly as the son of Pandu, and was known as the disciple of Drona, with the support of Vasudeva.
kathamasmadvidho brūyādbhīto'smītyayaśaskaram। vacanaṃ naraśārdūla vajrāyudhamapi svayam ॥5-155-32॥
How could someone like me, a warrior, admit to fear, which is disgraceful, O tiger among men, even in front of Indra himself?
nāsmi bhīto mahābāho sahāyārthaśca nāsti me। yathākāmaṃ yathāyogaṃ gaccha vānyatra tiṣṭha vā ॥5-155-33॥
I am not afraid, O mighty-armed one, nor do I need any assistance. You may go or stay elsewhere as you desire.
vinivartya tato rukmī senāṃ sāgarasaṃnibhām। duryodhanamupāgacchattathaiva bharatarṣabha ॥5-155-34॥
Then, Rukmi turned back and approached Duryodhana's army, which was vast like the ocean, in the same manner, O best of the Bharatas.
tathaiva cābhigamyainamuvāca sa narādhipaḥ। pratyākhyātaśca tenāpi sa tadā śūramāninā ॥5-155-35॥
In the same manner, the king approached him and spoke. However, he was rejected by the proud warrior at that time.
dvāveva tu mahārāja tasmādyuddhādvyapeyatuḥ। rauhiṇeyaśca vārṣṇeyo rukmī ca vasudhādhipaḥ ॥5-155-36॥
O great king, two warriors withdrew from the battle: the son of Rohini, the descendant of Vrishni, and Rukmi, the lord of the earth.
gate rāme tīrthayātrāṃ bhīṣmakasya sute tathā। upāviśan pāṇḍaveyā mantrāya punareva hi ॥5-155-37॥
After Rama and the son of Bhishmaka had gone on their pilgrimage, the Pandavas sat down once more for a consultation.
samitir dharmarājasya sā pārthivasamākulā। śuśubhe tārakācitrā dyauś candreṇeva bhārata ॥5-155-38॥
The assembly of King Yudhishthira, filled with kings, shone like a starry sky with the moon, O Bharata.
