duryodhanasya tadvākyaṃ niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ। netrābhyāmatitāmrābhyāṃ kaitavyaṃ samudaikṣata ॥5-160-1॥

(Having heard those words of Duryodhana, the best of the Bharatas looked at Kaitavya with very red eyes.)
Upon hearing Duryodhana's words, the distinguished Bharata turned his very red eyes towards Kaitavya.
स केशवमभिप्रेक्ष्य गुडाकेशो महायशाः। अभ्यभाषत कैतव्यं प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ॥५-१६०-२॥

स्ववीर्यं यः समाश्रित्य समाह्वयति वै परान्। अभीतः पूरयञ्शक्तिं स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥५-१६०-३॥

(He who, relying upon his own strength, indeed challenges others, fearlessly filling strength, he indeed is called a man.)
A man is one who, relying on his own strength, fearlessly challenges others and fills himself with power.
परवीर्यं समाश्रित्य यः समाह्वयते परान्। क्षत्रबन्धुरशक्तत्वाल्लोके स पुरुषाधमः ॥५-१६०-४॥
paravīryaṃ samāśritya yaḥ samāhvayate parān। kṣatrabandhuraśaktatvālloke sa puruṣādhamaḥ ॥5-160-4॥

(Relying on others' strength, who challenges others, is a kshatriya in name only due to incapability, in the world he is the lowest among men.)

स त्वं परेषां वीर्येण मन्यसे वीर्यमात्मनः। स्वयं कापुरुषो मूढः परांश्च क्षेप्तुमिच्छसि ॥५-१६०-५॥

हन्यामहं द्रोणमृते हि लोकं; न ते भयं विद्यते पाण्डवेभ्यः। ततो हि ते लब्धतमं च राज्यं; क्षयं गताः पाण्डवाश्चेति भावः ॥५-१६०-११॥

सूर्योदये युक्तसेनः प्रतीक्ष्य; ध्वजी रथी रक्ष च सत्यसन्धम्। अहं हि वः पश्यतां द्वीपमेनं; रथाद्भीष्मं पातयितास्मि बाणैः ॥५-१६०-१३॥

(Tomorrow, Suyodhana will know the boastful words, having seen the grandfather afflicted by the shower of arrows by me.)

यदुक्तश्च सभामध्ये पुरुषो ह्रस्वदर्शनः। क्रुद्धेन भीमसेनेन भ्राता दुःशासनस्तव ॥५-१६०-१५॥
yaduktaśca sabhāmadhye puruṣo hrasvadarśanaḥ। kruddhena bhīmasenena bhrātā duḥśāsanastava ॥5-160-15॥

अधर्मज्ञो नित्यवैरी पापबुद्धिर्नृशंसकृत्। सत्यां प्रतिज्ञां नचिराद्रक्ष्यसे तां सुयोधन ॥५-१६०-१६॥
adharmajño nityavairī pāpabuddhirnṛśaṁsakṛt। satyāṁ pratijñāṁ nacirādrakṣyase tāṁ suyodhana ॥5-160-16॥

(O Suyodhana, knower of unrighteousness, eternal enemy, wicked-minded, cruel deed, you will soon protect that true promise.)

अभिमानस्य दर्पस्य क्रोधपारुष्ययोस्तथा। नैष्ठुर्यस्यावलेपस्य आत्मसम्भावनस्य च ॥५-१६०-१७॥

(Of pride, of arrogance, of anger and harshness, and of cruelty, of conceit, and of self-conceit.)
This verse describes the negative qualities such as pride, arrogance, anger, harshness, cruelty, conceit, and self-conceit.
नृशंसतायास्तैक्ष्ण्यस्य धर्मविद्वेषणस्य च। अधर्मस्यातिवादस्य वृद्धातिक्रमणस्य च ॥५-१६०-१८॥
nṛśaṁsatāyāstaikṣṇyasya dharmavidveṣaṇasya ca। adharmasyātivādasya vṛddhātikramaṇasya ca ॥5-160-18॥
[नृशंसतायाः (nṛśaṁsatāyāḥ) - of cruelty; तैक्ष्ण्यस्य (taikṣṇyasya) - of sharpness; धर्मविद्वेषणस्य (dharmavidveṣaṇasya) - of hatred towards righteousness; च (ca) - and; अधर्मस्य (adharmasya) - of unrighteousness; अतिवादस्य (ativādasya) - of excessive speech; वृद्धातिक्रमणस्य (vṛddhātikramaṇasya) - of transgression against the elderly; च (ca) - and;]

दर्शनस्य च वक्रस्य कृत्स्नस्यापनयस्य च। द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं फलं तीव्रमचिरेण सुयोधन ॥५-१६०-१९॥

(Of vision and of crookedness, and of complete removal, you will see the intense fruit soon, O Suyodhana.)

वासुदेवद्वितीये हि मयि क्रुद्धे नराधिप। आशा ते जीविते मूढ राज्ये वा केन हेतुना ॥५-१६०-२०॥
vāsudevadvitīye hi mayi kruddhe narādhipa। āśā te jīvite mūḍha rājye vā kena hetunā ॥5-160-20॥

(In the second of Vāsudeva, indeed, when I am angry, O king, your hope in life or in the kingdom, foolish one, by what reason?)
O King, when I, the second of Vāsudeva, am angry, what reason do you have, foolish one, to hope for life or kingdom?
शान्ते भीष्मे तथा द्रोणे सूतपुत्रे च पातिते। निराशो जीविते राज्ये पुत्रेषु च भविष्यसि ॥५-१६०-२१॥
śānte bhīṣme tathā droṇe sūtaputre ca pātite। nirāśo jīvite rājye putreṣu ca bhaviṣyasi ॥5-160-21॥
[शान्ते (śānte) - at peace; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - Bhishma; तथा (tathā) - and; द्रोणे (droṇe) - Drona; सूतपुत्रे (sūtaputre) - son of a charioteer; च (ca) - and; पातिते (pātite) - fallen; निराशः (nirāśaḥ) - hopeless; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - in sons; च (ca) - and; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will be;]
(At peace with Bhishma, Drona, and the son of a charioteer fallen, hopeless in life, in the kingdom, and in sons, you will be.)
When Bhishma, Drona, and Karna have fallen, you will find yourself hopeless in life, in your kingdom, and with your sons.
भ्रातॄणां निधनं दृष्ट्वा पुत्राणां च सुयोधन। भीमसेनेन निहतो दुष्कृतानि स्मरिष्यसि ॥५-१६०-२२॥
bhrātṝṇāṃ nidhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā putrāṇāṃ ca suyodhana। bhīmasenena nihato duṣkṛtāni smariṣyasi ॥5-160-22॥
[भ्रातॄणां (bhrātṝṇāṃ) - of brothers; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṃ) - of sons; च (ca) - and; सुयोधन (suyodhana) - Suyodhana; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; दुष्कृतानि (duṣkṛtāni) - evil deeds; स्मरिष्यसि (smariṣyasi) - you will remember;]
(Having seen the death of brothers and sons, O Suyodhana, killed by Bhimasena, you will remember the evil deeds.)
Upon witnessing the demise of your brothers and sons, Suyodhana, slain by Bhimasena, you will recall the wrongdoings.
न द्वितीयां प्रतिज्ञां हि प्रतिज्ञास्यति केशवः। सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहं ह्येतत्सर्वं सत्यं भविष्यति ॥५-१६०-२३॥
na dvitīyāṃ pratijñāṃ hi pratijñāsyati keśavaḥ। satyaṃ bravīmyahaṃ hyetatsarvaṃ satyaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥5-160-23॥
[न (na) - not; द्वितीयां (dvitīyāṃ) - second; प्रतिज्ञां (pratijñāṃ) - promise; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रतिज्ञास्यति (pratijñāsyati) - will promise; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keshava; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Keshava will indeed not make a second promise. I speak the truth, indeed this all will be true.)
Keshava will not make a second promise. I assure you, this will all come true.
इत्युक्तः कैतवो राजंस्तद्वाक्यमुपधार्य च। अनुज्ञातो निववृते पुनरेव यथागतम् ॥५-१६०-२४॥
ityuktaḥ kaitavo rājaṃstadvākyamupadhārya ca| anujñāto nivavṛte punareva yathāgatam ॥5-160-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; कैतवः (kaitavaḥ) - deceiver; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उपधार्य (upadhārya) - having understood; च (ca) - and; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; निववृते (nivavṛte) - returned; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - came;]
(Thus spoken, the deceiver, O king, having understood that speech and being permitted, returned again indeed as he came.)
The deceiver, having been addressed thus, O king, understood the words and, having been permitted, returned the same way he had come.
उपावृत्य तु पाण्डुभ्यः कैतव्यो धृतराष्ट्रजम्। गत्वा यथोक्तं तत्सर्वमुवाच कुरुसंसदि ॥५-१६०-२५॥
upāvṛtya tu pāṇḍubhyaḥ kaitavyo dhṛtarāṣṭrajam। gatvā yathoktaṃ tatsarvamuvāca kurusaṃsadi ॥5-160-25॥
[उपावृत्य (upāvṛtya) - having approached; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डुभ्यः (pāṇḍubhyaḥ) - to the Pandavas; कैतव्यः (kaitavyaḥ) - Kaitavya; धृतराष्ट्रजम् (dhṛtarāṣṭrajam) - son of Dhritarashtra; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; यथोक्तं (yathoktaṃ) - as instructed; तत्सर्वम् (tatsarvam) - all that; उवाच (uvāca) - said; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
(Having approached the Pandavas, Kaitavya, the son of Dhritarashtra, went and said all that was instructed in the Kuru assembly.)
Kaitavya, the son of Dhritarashtra, approached the Pandavas and conveyed everything as instructed in the Kuru assembly.
केशवार्जुनयोर्वाक्यं निशम्य भरतर्षभः। दुःशासनं च कर्णं च शकुनिं चाभ्यभाषत ॥५-१६०-२६॥
keśavārjunayorvākyaṃ niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ। duḥśāsanaṃ ca karṇaṃ ca śakuniṃ cābhyabhāṣata ॥5-160-26॥
[केशव (keśava) - Krishna; अर्जुनयोः (arjunayoḥ) - of Arjuna; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - the best of the Bharatas; दुःशासनं (duḥśāsanaṃ) - Duhshasana; च (ca) - and; कर्णं (karṇaṃ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; शकुनिं (śakuniṃ) - Shakuni; च (ca) - and; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(Having heard the speech of Krishna and Arjuna, the best of the Bharatas addressed Duhshasana, Karna, and Shakuni.)
Upon hearing the words of Krishna and Arjuna, the noble Bharata addressed Duhshasana, Karna, and Shakuni.
आज्ञापयत राज्ञश्च बलं मित्रबलं तथा। यथा प्रागुदयात्सर्वा युक्ता तिष्ठत्यनीकिनी ॥५-१६०-२७॥
ājñāpayata rājñaśca balaṃ mitrabalaṃ tathā। yathā prāgudayātsarvā yuktā tiṣṭhatyanīkinī ॥5-160-27॥

(Commanded the king's army and allied forces also, as before sunrise all arranged stands the army.)
The king commanded both his own army and the allied forces to be ready and in position before sunrise, ensuring that the entire army was properly arranged.
ततः कर्णसमादिष्टा दूताः प्रत्वरिता रथैः। उष्ट्रवामीभिरप्यन्ये सदश्वैश्च महाजवैः ॥५-१६०-२८॥
tataḥ karṇasamādiṣṭā dūtāḥ pratvaritā rathaiḥ। uṣṭravāmībhirapyanye sadaśvaiśca mahājavaiḥ ॥5-160-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कर्णसमादिष्टा (karṇasamādiṣṭā) - ordered by Karna; दूताः (dūtāḥ) - messengers; प्रत्वरिता (pratvaritā) - hurried; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - by chariots; उष्ट्रवामीभिः (uṣṭravāmībhiḥ) - by camel riders; अपि (api) - also; अन्ये (anye) - others; सदश्वैः (sadaśvaiḥ) - by good horses; च (ca) - and; महाजवैः (mahājavaiḥ) - with great speed;]
(Then, the messengers ordered by Karna hurried by chariots, also others by camel riders and by good horses with great speed.)
Then, as ordered by Karna, the messengers hurriedly set out in chariots, while others used camels and fine horses, all moving with great speed.
तूर्णं परिययुः सेनां कृत्स्नां कर्णस्य शासनात्। आज्ञापयन्तो राज्ञस्तान्योगः प्रागुदयादिति ॥५-१६०-२९॥
tūrṇaṃ pariyayuḥ senāṃ kṛtsnāṃ karṇasya śāsanāt| ājñāpayanto rājñastānyogaḥ prāgudayāditi ॥5-160-29॥
[तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; परिययुः (pariyayuḥ) - they went around; सेनाम् (senām) - army; कृत्स्नाम् (kṛtsnām) - entire; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karna; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - by the order; आज्ञापयन्तः (ājñāpayantaḥ) - commanding; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; तान् (tān) - them; योगः (yogaḥ) - union; प्राक् (prāk) - before; उदयात् (udayāt) - rising; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Quickly they went around the entire army by the order of Karna, commanding them of the king, union before rising thus.)
Quickly, by Karna's order, they circled the entire army, commanding them on behalf of the king, before the rise of the sun.
