स चापरिमितप्रज्ञस्तच्छ्रुत्वा पार्थभाषितम्। किमुक्तवान्महेष्वासो भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः ॥५-१६२-३॥

Upon hearing the words of Partha, the wise and great archer Bhishma, the best among warriors, responded thoughtfully. What did he say?
सेनापत्यं च सम्प्राप्य कौरवाणां धुरन्धरः। किमचेष्टत गाङ्गेयो महाबुद्धिपराक्रमः ॥५-१६२-४॥

ततस्तत्सञ्जयस्तस्मै सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत्। यथोक्तं कुरुवृद्धेन भीष्मेणामिततेजसा ॥५-१६२-५॥
tatastatsañjayastasmai sarvameva nyavedayat। yathoktaṃ kuruvṛddhena bhīṣmeṇāmitatejasā ॥5-162-5॥

Then Sanjaya conveyed all the details to him, exactly as narrated by the venerable Bhishma, the elder of the Kuru dynasty, who possessed immeasurable splendor.

नमस्कृत्वा कुमाराय सेनान्ये शक्तिपाणये। अहं सेनापतिस्तेऽद्य भविष्यामि न संशयः ॥५-१६२-७॥
namaskṛtvā kumārāya senānye śaktipāṇaye। ahaṃ senāpatiste'dya bhaviṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-162-7॥

सेनाकर्मण्यभिज्ञोऽस्मि व्यूहेषु विविधेषु च। कर्म कारयितुं चैव भृतानप्यभृतांस्तथा ॥५-१६२-८॥
senākarmaṇyabhijño'smi vyūheṣu vividheṣu ca। karma kārayituṃ caiva bhṛtānapyabhṛtāṃstathā ॥5-162-8॥
[सेना (senā) - army; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in duties; अभिज्ञः (abhijñaḥ) - expert; अस्मि (asmi) - am; व्यूहेषु (vyūheṣu) - in formations; विविधेषु (vididheṣu) - various; च (ca) - and; कर्म (karma) - tasks; कारयितुं (kārayituṃ) - to execute; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भृतान् (bhṛtān) - paid; अपि (api) - also; अभृतान् (abhṛtān) - unpaid; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]

यात्रायानेषु युद्धेषु लब्धप्रशमनेषु च। भृशं वेद महाराज यथा वेद बृहस्पतिः ॥५-१६२-९॥

(In journeys, in battles, and in obtaining peace, O great king, knows greatly as Bṛhaspati knows.)
O great king, you are as knowledgeable in journeys, battles, and achieving peace as Bṛhaspati himself.
व्यूहानपि महारम्भान्दैवगान्धर्वमानुषान्। तैरहं मोहयिष्यामि पाण्डवान्व्येतु ते ज्वरः ॥५-१६२-१०॥
vyūhān api mahārambhān daivagāndharvamānuṣān। tair ahaṃ mohayişyāmi pāṇḍavān vyetu te jvaraḥ ॥5-162-10॥
[व्यूहान् (vyūhān) - formations; अपि (api) - also; महारम्भान् (mahārambhān) - great undertakings; दैवगान्धर्वमानुषान् (daivagāndharvamānuṣān) - divine, celestial, and human; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अहम् (aham) - I; मोहयिष्यामि (mohayiṣyāmi) - will delude; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas; व्येतु (vyetu) - let it go; ते (te) - your; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(I will delude the Pandavas with formations, great undertakings, divine, celestial, and human. Let your fever go.)
I will use formations and great undertakings, both divine and human, to confuse the Pandavas. Let your anxiety be relieved.
सोऽहं योत्स्यामि तत्त्वेन पालयंस्तव वाहिनीम्। यथावच्छास्त्रतो राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥५-१६२-११॥
so'haṁ yotsyāmi tattvena pālayaṁstava vāhinīm। yathāvacchāstrato rājanvyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ ॥5-162-11॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; योत्स्यामि (yotsyāmi) - will fight; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; पालयन् (pālayaṁ) - protecting; तव (tava) - your; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; शास्त्रतः (śāstrataḥ) - according to the scriptures; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्येतु (vyetu) - let go; ते (te) - your; मानसः (mānasaḥ) - mental; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(He, I will fight truly, protecting your army. Properly according to the scriptures, O king, let your mental fever go.)

na vidyate me gāṅgeya bhayaṃ devāsureṣvapi। samasteṣu mahābāho satyametadbravīmi te ॥5-162-12॥

किं पुनस्त्वयि दुर्धर्षे सेनापत्ये व्यवस्थिते। द्रोणे च पुरुषव्याघ्रे स्थिते युद्धाभिनन्दिनि ॥५-१६२-१३॥
kiṁ punastvayi durdharṣe senāpatye vyavasthite। droṇe ca puruṣavyāghre sthite yuddhābhinandini ॥5-162-13॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; दुर्धर्षे (durdharṣe) - invincible; सेनापत्ये (senāpatye) - in the general; व्यवस्थिते (vyavasthite) - situated; द्रोणे (droṇe) - in Drona; च (ca) - and; पुरुषव्याघ्रे (puruṣavyāghre) - tiger among men; स्थिते (sthite) - situated; युद्धाभिनन्दिनि (yuddhābhinandini) - rejoicing in battle;]
(What again in you, invincible, situated in the general, and in Drona, the tiger among men, situated, rejoicing in battle.)
What then, when you, the invincible, are positioned as the general, and Drona, the tiger among men, stands rejoicing in battle?
भवद्भ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां स्थिताभ्यां विजयो मम। न दुर्लभं कुरुश्रेष्ठ देवराज्यमपि ध्रुवम् ॥५-१६२-१४॥
bhavadbhyāṃ puruṣāgryābhyāṃ sthitābhyāṃ vijayo mama। na durlabhaṃ kuruśreṣṭha devarājyamapi dhruvam ॥5-162-14॥

रथसङ्ख्यां तु कार्त्स्न्येन परेषामात्मनस्तथा। तथैवातिरथानां च वेत्तुमिच्छामि कौरव ॥५-१६२-१५॥
rathasaṅkhyāṃ tu kārtsnyena pareṣāmātmanastathā। tathaivātirathānāṃ ca vettumicchāmi kaurava ॥5-162-15॥

gāndhāre śṛṇu rājendra rathasaṅkhyāṃ svake bale| ye rathāḥ pṛthivīpāla tathaivātirathāśca ye ॥5-162-17॥

बहूनीह सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। रथानां तव सेनायां यथामुख्यं तु मे शृणु ॥५-१६२-१८॥
bahūnīha sahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca। rathānāṃ tava senāyāṃ yathāmukhyaṃ tu me śṛṇu ॥5-162-18॥
