(He will indeed fight, having conquered, like Maghavan (Indra) with the Danavas. His warriors are all renowned and skilled in battle.)

भैमसेनिर्महाराज हैडिम्बो राक्षसेश्वरः। मतो मे बहुमायावी रथयूथपयूथपः ॥५-१६९-६॥

(The one fond of battle, dear father, will fight in battle with illusions. And his demons, heroes, ministers are obedient.)
Dear father, the one who loves battle will engage in the fight using illusions. His demon warriors and ministers are brave and obedient.
एते चान्ये च बहवो नानाजनपदेश्वराः। समेताः पाण्डवस्यार्थे वासुदेवपुरोगमाः ॥५-१६९-८॥

tairahaṁ samare vīra tvāmayadbhirjaya iṣibhiḥ। yotsyāmi jayamākāṅkṣannatha vā nidhanaṁ raṇe ॥5-169-11॥

(By them, I, in battle, hero, with arrows desiring victory, will fight you, desiring victory, or death in battle.)

पार्थं च वासुदेवं च चक्रगाण्डीवधारिणौ। सन्ध्यागताविवार्केन्दू समेष्ये पुरुषोत्तमौ ॥५-१६९-१२॥
pārthaṃ ca vāsudevaṃ ca cakragāṇḍīvadhāriṇau| sandhyāgatāv ivārkendū sameṣye puruṣottamau ॥5-169-12॥

(Those who are indeed the great charioteers, the soldiers of the son of Pandu, I will confront them with armies at the forefront of battle.)

पाञ्चाल्यं तु महाबाहो नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम्। उद्यतेषुमभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रतियुध्यन्तमाहवे ॥५-१६९-१६॥

(But, O mighty-armed one, I would not kill Shikhandi, Drupada's son, seeing him with raised arrows fighting back in battle.)

लोकस्तद्वेद यदहं पितुः प्रियचिकीर्षया। प्राप्तं राज्यं परित्यज्य ब्रह्मचर्ये धृतव्रतः ॥५-१६९-१७॥
lokastadveda yadahaṃ pituḥ priyacikīrṣayā। prāptaṃ rājyaṃ parityajya brahmacarye dhṛtavrataḥ ॥5-169-17॥
[लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; तत् (tad) - that; वेद (veda) - knows; यत् (yat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; पितुः (pituḥ) - father's; प्रियचिकीर्षया (priyacikīrṣayā) - with the desire to please; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - abandoning; ब्रह्मचर्ये (brahmacarye) - in celibacy; धृतव्रतः (dhṛtavrataḥ) - firm in vow;]
(The world knows that I, with the desire to please my father, abandoned the obtained kingdom and am firm in the vow of celibacy.)

चित्राङ्गदं कौरवाणामहं राज्येऽभ्यषेचयम्। विचित्रवीर्यं च शिशुं यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥५-१६९-१८॥
citrāṅgadaṃ kauravāṇāmahaṃ rājye'bhyaṣecayam। vicitravīryaṃ ca śiśuṃ yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayam ॥5-169-18॥
[चित्राङ्गदम् (citrāṅgadam) - Chitrangada; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; अहम् (aham) - I; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; अभ्यषेचयम् (abhyaṣecayam) - anointed; विचित्रवीर्यम् (vicitravīryam) - Vichitravirya; च (ca) - and; शिशुम् (śiśum) - the child; यौवराज्ये (yauvarājye) - in the princely state; अभ्यषेचयम् (abhyaṣecayam) - anointed;]
(I anointed Chitrangada of the Kauravas in the kingdom. And I anointed the child Vichitravirya in the princely state.)

देवव्रतत्वं विख्याप्य पृथिव्यां सर्वराजसु। नैव हन्यां स्त्रियं जातु न स्त्रीपूर्वं कथञ्चन ॥५-१६९-१९॥
devavratatvaṃ vikhyāpya pṛthivyāṃ sarvarājasu। naiva hanyāṃ striyaṃ jātu na strīpūrvaṃ kathaṃcana ॥5-169-19॥
[देवव्रतत्वं (devavratatvaṃ) - state of being devoted to the gods; विख्याप्य (vikhyāpya) - having proclaimed; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings; नैव (naiva) - never; हन्यां (hanyāṃ) - would I kill; स्त्रियं (striyaṃ) - a woman; जातु (jātu) - ever; न (na) - not; स्त्रीपूर्वं (strīpūrvaṃ) - formerly a woman; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Having proclaimed the state of being devoted to the gods on earth among all kings, never would I kill a woman, ever, not formerly a woman in any way.)
Having declared the state of being devoted to the gods among all the kings on earth, I would never kill a woman, nor anyone who was formerly a woman, in any circumstance.
स हि स्त्रीपूर्वको राजञ्शिखण्डी यदि ते श्रुतः। कन्या भूत्वा पुमाञ्जातो न योत्स्ये तेन भारत ॥५-१६९-२०॥
sa hi strīpūrvako rājañśikhaṇḍī yadi te śrutaḥ। kanyā bhūtvā pumāñjāto na yotsye tena bhārata ॥5-169-20॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; स्त्रीपूर्वकः (strīpūrvakaḥ) - formerly a woman; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - to you; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; कन्या (kanyā) - a girl; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; न (na) - not; योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I will fight; तेन (tena) - with him; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(He, indeed, formerly a woman, O king, Śikhaṇḍī, if heard by you, having become a girl, born a man, I will not fight with him, O Bhārata.)
O King, if you have heard of Śikhaṇḍī, who was formerly a woman and became a man, I will not fight with him, O Bhārata.
सर्वांस्त्वन्यान्हनिष्यामि पार्थिवान्भरतर्षभ। यान्समेष्यामि समरे न तु कुन्तीसुतान्नृप ॥५-१६९-२१॥
sarvāṁstvanyān haniṣyāmi pārthivān bharatarṣabha। yān sameṣyāmi samare na tu kuntīsutān nṛpa ॥5-169-21॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; त्वन्यान् (tvanyān) - other; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; यान् (yān) - whom; समेष्यामि (sameṣyāmi) - I will encounter; समरे (samare) - in battle; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; कुन्ती-सुतान् (kuntī-sutān) - Kunti's sons; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(O best of the Bharatas, I will kill all other kings whom I will encounter in battle, but not Kunti's sons, O king.)
