किमर्थं भरतश्रेष्ठ न हन्यास्त्वं शिखण्डिनम्। उद्यतेषुमथो दृष्ट्वा समरेष्वाततायिनम् ॥५-१७०-१॥
kimarthaṃ bharataśreṣṭha na hanyāstvaṃ śikhaṇḍinam। udyateṣumatho dṛṣṭvā samareṣvātatāyinam ॥5-170-1॥
[किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; न (na) - not; हन्याः (hanyāḥ) - should kill; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शिखण्डिनम् (śikhaṇḍinam) - Shikhandi; उद्यतेषुम् (udyateṣum) - with raised arrows; अथ (atha) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; आततायिनम् (ātatāyinam) - aggressor;]
(For what reason, O best of the Bharatas, should you not kill Shikhandi, having seen him with raised arrows, an aggressor in battles?)
O best of the Bharatas, why should you refrain from killing Shikhandi, who stands as an aggressor in battles with his arrows raised?
पूर्वमुक्त्वा महाबाहो पाण्डवान्सह सोमकैः। वधिष्यामीति गाङ्गेय तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥५-१७०-२॥

(Having said before, O mighty-armed one, "I will slay the Pandavas along with the Somakas," O son of Ganga, tell that to me, grandfather.)

शृणु दुर्योधन कथां सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः। यदर्थं युधि सम्प्रेक्ष्य नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम् ॥५-१७०-३॥

(The great king, my father Śantanu, the bull among the Bharatas, attained his end, the righteous soul, at the time, O bull among men.)
My father, King Śantanu, the noble leader of the Bharatas, passed away righteously at the destined time, O noble one among men.
ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रतिज्ञां परिपालयन्। चित्राङ्गदं भ्रातरं वै महाराज्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥५-१७०-५॥
tato'haṁ bharataśreṣṭha pratijñāṁ paripālayan। citrāṅgadaṁ bhrātaraṁ vai mahārājye'bhiṣecayam ॥5-170-5॥

(Then I, O best of the Bharatas, fulfilling the promise, anointed my brother Citrangada in the great kingdom.)

तस्मिंश्च निधनं प्राप्ते सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः। विचित्रवीर्यं राजानमभ्यषिञ्चं यथाविधि ॥५-१७०-६॥
tasmiṁśca nidhanaṁ prāpte satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ। vicitravīryaṁ rājānamabhyaṣiñcaṁ yathāvidhi ॥5-170-6॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; च (ca) - and; निधनं (nidhanaṁ) - death; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - having occurred; सत्यवत्या (satyavatyā) - by Satyavati; मते (mate) - in the opinion; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remained; विचित्रवीर्यं (vicitravīryaṁ) - Vicitravīrya; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; अभ्यषिञ्चं (abhyaṣiñcaṁ) - anointed; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rules;]
(In that, when death occurred, by Satyavati's opinion, remained. Vicitravīrya was anointed as king according to the rules.)
Upon the death, as per Satyavati's decision, Vicitravīrya was duly anointed as the king.
मयाभिषिक्तो राजेन्द्र यवीयानपि धर्मतः। विचित्रवीर्यो धर्मात्मा मामेव समुदैक्षत ॥५-१७०-७॥
mayābhiṣikto rājendra yavīyānapi dharmataḥ। vicitravīryo dharmātmā māmeva samudaikṣata ॥5-170-7॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यवीयान् (yavīyān) - younger; अपि (api) - even; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - by righteousness; विचित्रवीर्यः (vicitravīryaḥ) - Vicitravīrya; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; समुदैक्षत (samudaikṣata) - looked upon;]
(Anointed by me, O king, even the younger Vicitravīrya, righteous soul, looked upon me by righteousness.)

तस्य दारक्रियां तात चिकीर्षुरहमप्युत। अनुरूपादिव कुलादिति चिन्त्य मनो दधे ॥५-१७०-८॥

(Thus, O mighty-armed one, you heard of the three maidens in the self-choice ceremony, all unmatched in beauty, the daughters of the King of Kashi, then Amba, and indeed Ambika, and thus indeed Ambalika, another.)
O mighty-armed one, you heard about the three princesses at the self-choice ceremony, all unparalleled in beauty, who were the daughters of the King of Kashi: Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika.
राजानश्च समाहूताः पृथिव्यां भरतर्षभ। अम्बा ज्येष्ठाभवत्तासामम्बिका त्वथ मध्यमा ॥ अम्बालिका च राजेन्द्र राजकन्या यवीयसी ॥५-१७०-१०॥
rājānaśca samāhūtāḥ pṛthivyāṃ bharatarṣabha। ambā jyeṣṭhābhavattāsāmambikā tvatha madhyamā ॥ ambālikā ca rājendra rājakanyā yavīyasī ॥5-170-10॥
[राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; समाहूताः (samāhūtāḥ) - assembled; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; अम्बा (ambā) - Ambā; ज्येष्ठा (jyeṣṭhā) - eldest; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तासाम् (tāsām) - of them; अम्बिका (ambikā) - Ambikā; तु (tu) - but; अथ (atha) - then; मध्यमा (madhyamā) - middle; अम्बालिका (ambālikā) - Ambālikā; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; राजकन्या (rājakanyā) - princess; यवीयसी (yavīyasī) - youngest;]
(The kings were assembled on earth, O best of the Bharatas. Ambā became the eldest of them, Ambikā then the middle. And Ambālikā, O king, was the youngest princess.)

सोऽहमेकरथेनैव गतः काशिपतेः पुरीम्। अपश्यं ता महाबाहो तिस्रः कन्याः स्वलङ्कृताः ॥ राज्ञश्चैव समावृत्तान्पार्थिवान्पृथिवीपते ॥५-१७०-११॥

[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एकरथेन (ekarathena) - with one chariot; एव (eva) - only; गतः (gataḥ) - went; काशिपतेः (kāśipateḥ) - of the lord of Kāśī; पुरीम् (purīm) - to the city; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - saw; ता (tā) - those; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; स्वलङ्कृताः (svalaṅkṛtāḥ) - well-adorned; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समावृत्तान् (samāvṛttān) - returned; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - princes; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(He, I went with one chariot only to the city of the lord of Kāśī. O mighty-armed one, I saw those three well-adorned maidens. And indeed, O lord of the earth, the princes returned.)
I went alone with a single chariot to the city of the king of Kāśī. There, O mighty-armed one, I saw those three beautifully adorned maidens. And indeed, O lord of the earth, the princes had returned.
ततोऽहं तान्नृपान्सर्वानाहूय समरे स्थितान्। रथमारोपयां चक्रे कन्यास्ता भरतर्षभ ॥५-१७०-१२॥
tato'haṁ tānnṛpānsarvānāhūya samare sthitān। rathamāropayāṁ cakre kanyāstā bharatarṣabha ॥5-170-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; तान् (tān) - those; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; आहूय (āhūya) - having called; समरे (samare) - in battle; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरोपयाम् (āropayām) - made to ascend; चक्रे (cakre) - did; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; ता (tā) - those; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Then I, having called all those kings standing in battle, made those maidens ascend the chariot, O best of the Bharatas.)

वीर्यशुल्काश्च ता ज्ञात्वा समारोप्य रथं तदा। अवोचं पार्थिवान्सर्वानहं तत्र समागतान् ॥ भीष्मः शान्तनवः कन्या हरतीति पुनः पुनः ॥५-१७०-१३॥

[वीर्यशुल्काः (vīryaśulkāḥ) - for a price of valor; च (ca) - and; ता (tā) - those; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; समारोप्य (samāropya) - having mounted; रथं (rathaṃ) - the chariot; तदा (tadā) - then; अवोचं (avocaṃ) - I said; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - to the kings; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अहम् (aham) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; समागतान् (samāgatān) - assembled; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; हरतीति (haratīti) - is taking away; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Knowing those for a price of valor, having mounted the chariot then, I said to all the kings assembled there: "Bhishma, son of Shantanu, is taking away the maiden again and again.")
Upon realizing that the maidens were to be won by valor, I mounted the chariot and addressed all the assembled kings, declaring repeatedly that Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, was taking away the maiden.
ते यतध्वं परं शक्त्या सर्वे मोक्षाय पार्थिवाः। प्रसह्य हि नयाम्येष मिषतां वो नराधिपाः ॥५-१७०-१४॥
te yatadhvaṁ paraṁ śaktyā sarve mokṣāya pārthivāḥ। prasahya hi nayāmyeṣa miṣatāṁ vo narādhipāḥ ॥5-170-14॥
[ते (te) - they; यतध्वं (yatadhvaṁ) - strive; परं (paraṁ) - supreme; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with strength; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मोक्षाय (mokṣāya) - for liberation; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings; प्रसह्य (prasahya) - by force; हि (hi) - indeed; नयामि (nayāmi) - I lead; एष (eṣa) - this; मिषतां (miṣatāṁ) - while watching; वः (vo) - your; नराधिपाः (narādhipāḥ) - kings;]
(They strive with supreme strength, all kings, for liberation. Indeed, I lead this by force while your kings watch.)
All the kings should strive with their utmost strength for liberation. Indeed, I will lead this forcefully while your kings watch.
ततस्ते पृथिवीपालाः समुत्पेतुरुदायुधाः। योगो योग इति क्रुद्धाः सारथींश्चाप्यचोदयन् ॥५-१७०-१५॥
tataste pṛthivīpālāḥ samutpeturudāyudhāḥ। yogo yoga iti kruddhāḥ sārathīṃścāpyacodayan ॥5-170-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पृथिवीपालाः (pṛthivīpālāḥ) - kings; समुत्पेतुः (samutpetuḥ) - arose; उदायुधाः (udāyudhāḥ) - with weapons; योगः (yogaḥ) - effort; योगः (yogaḥ) - effort; इति (iti) - thus; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; सारथीन् (sārathīn) - charioteers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अचोदयन् (acodayan) - urged;]
(Then those kings arose with weapons. 'Effort, effort,' thus angry, they urged the charioteers also.)

ते रथैर्मेघसङ्काशैर्गजैश्च गजयोधिनः। पृष्ठ्यैश्चाश्वैर्महीपालाः समुत्पेतुरुदायुधाः ॥५-१७०-१६॥

[ते (te) - they; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; मेघसङ्काशैः (meghasaṅkāśaiḥ) - cloud-like; गजैः (gajaiḥ) - with elephants; च (ca) - and; गजयोधिनः (gajayodhinaḥ) - elephant warriors; पृष्ठ्यैः (pṛṣṭhyaiḥ) - with cavalry; च (ca) - and; अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - with horses; महीपालाः (mahīpālāḥ) - kings; समुत्पेतुः (samutpetuḥ) - rose; उदायुधाः (udāyudhāḥ) - with raised weapons;]
(They, with chariots like clouds, with elephants and elephant warriors, with cavalry and horses, the kings rose with raised weapons.)

ततस्ते मां महीपालाः सर्व एव विशां पते। रथव्रातेन महता सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥५-१७०-१७॥

(Then all the kings, O lord of men, surrounded me from all sides with a great multitude of chariots.)

(Of them approaching with variegated flags adorned with gold, I indeed felled each one by an arrow on the ground.)

हयांश्चैषां गजांश्चैव सारथींश्चाप्यहं रणे। अपातयं शरैर्दीप्तैः प्रहसन्पुरुषर्षभ ॥५-१७०-२०॥
hayāṃś caiṣāṃ gajāṃś caiva sārathīṃś cāpy ahaṃ raṇe। apātayaṃ śarair dīptaiḥ prahasan puruṣarṣabha ॥5-170-20॥

ते निवृत्ताश्च भग्नाश्च दृष्ट्वा तल्लाघवं मम। अथाहं हास्तिनपुरमायां जित्वा महीक्षितः ॥५-१७०-२१॥
te nivṛttāśca bhagnāśca dṛṣṭvā tallāghavaṃ mama। athāhaṃ hāstinapuramāyāṃ jitvā mahīkṣitaḥ ॥5-170-21॥
[ते (te) - they; निवृत्ताः (nivṛttāḥ) - returned; च (ca) - and; भग्नाः (bhagnāḥ) - defeated; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तत् (tat) - that; लाघवम् (lāghavam) - lightness; मम (mama) - my; अथ (atha) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; हास्तिनपुरम् (hāstinapuram) - Hastinapura; आयाम् (āyām) - in; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; महीक्षितः (mahīkṣitaḥ) - the kings;]
(They returned and were defeated, having seen that lightness of mine. Then I, having conquered the kings, came to Hastinapura.)
After witnessing my agility, they returned defeated. Then I conquered the kings and came to Hastinapura.
अतोऽहं ताश्च कन्या वै भ्रातुरर्थाय भारत। तच्च कर्म महाबाहो सत्यवत्यै न्यवेदयम् ॥५-१७०-२२॥

(Therefore, I indeed reported those maidens for the sake of my brother, O Bhārata, and that act, O mighty-armed one, to Satyavati.)
