दुःखद्वयमिदं भद्रे कतरस्य चिकीर्षसि। प्रतिकर्तव्यमबले तत्त्वं वत्से ब्रवीहि मे ॥५-१७६-१॥
duḥkhadvayamidaṃ bhadre katarasya cikīrṣasi। pratikartavyamabale tattvaṃ vatse bravīhi me ॥5-176-1॥
[दुःखद्वयम् (duḥkhadvayam) - pair of sorrows; इदं (idaṃ) - this; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; कतरस्य (katarasya) - of which; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - do you wish to act upon; प्रतिकर्तव्यम् (pratikartavyam) - to be countered; अबले (abale) - O weak one; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; वत्से (vatse) - O dear one; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - me;]
(This pair of sorrows, O auspicious one, which one do you wish to act upon? O weak one, tell me the truth, O dear one.)
O dear, there are two kinds of sorrows. Which one do you intend to address? Please tell me the truth, my dear.
यदि सौभपतिर्भद्रे नियोक्तव्यो मते तव। नियोक्ष्यति महात्मा तं रामस्त्वद्धितकाम्यया ॥५-१७६-२॥
yadi saubhapatirbhadre niyoktavyo mate tava। niyokṣyati mahātmā taṃ rāmas tvaddhitakāmyayā ॥5-176-2॥

(If, O gentle lady, the king of Saubha is to be appointed in your opinion, the great soul Rama will appoint him for your benefit.)
O gentle lady, if you think the king of Saubha should be appointed, the great Rama will do so for your benefit.
अथापगेयं भीष्मं तं रामेणेच्छसि धीमता। रणे विनिर्जितं द्रष्टुं कुर्यात्तदपि भार्गवः ॥५-१७६-३॥
athāpageyaṃ bhīṣmaṃ taṃ rāmeṇecchasi dhīmatā। raṇe vinirjitaṃ draṣṭuṃ kuryāttadapi bhārgavaḥ ॥5-176-3॥

अपनीतास्मि भीष्मेण भगवन्नविजानता। न हि जानाति मे भीष्मो ब्रह्मञ्शाल्वगतं मनः ॥५-१७६-५॥
apanītāsmi bhīṣmeṇa bhagavannavijānataḥ। na hi jānāti me bhīṣmo brahmañśālva-gataṃ manaḥ ॥5-176-5॥

भीष्मे वा कुरुशार्दूले शाल्वराजेऽथ वा पुनः। उभयोरेव वा ब्रह्मन्यद्युक्तं तत्समाचर ॥५-१७६-७॥
bhīṣme vā kuruśārdūle śālvarāje'tha vā punaḥ। ubhayoreva vā brahmanyadyuktaṃ tatsamācara ॥5-176-7॥

निवेदितं मया ह्येतद्दुःखमूलं यथातथम्। विधानं तत्र भगवन्कर्तुमर्हसि युक्तितः ॥५-१७६-८॥
niveditaṃ mayā hyetadduḥkhamūlaṃ yathātatham। vidhānaṃ tatra bhagavankartumarhasi yuktitaḥ ॥5-176-8॥

upapannamidaṁ bhadre yadevaṁ varavarṇini। dharmaṁ prati vaco brūyāḥ śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama ॥5-176-9॥

यदि त्वामापगेयो वै न नयेद्गजसाह्वयम्। शाल्वस्त्वां शिरसा भीरु गृह्णीयाद्रामचोदितः ॥५-१७६-१०॥
yadi tvāmāpgeyō vai na nayedgajasāhvayam। śālvastvāṃ śirasā bhīru gṛhṇīyādrāmacoditaḥ ॥5-176-10॥

तेन त्वं निर्जिता भद्रे यस्मान्नीतासि भामिनि। संशयः शाल्वराजस्य तेन त्वयि सुमध्यमे ॥५-१७६-११॥
tena tvaṁ nirjitā bhadre yasmānnītāsi bhāmini। saṁśayaḥ śālvarājasya tena tvayi sumadhyame ॥5-176-11॥

(By him, you are conquered, O gentle lady, because you are taken, O passionate one. The doubt of King Śālva is in you, O slender-waisted one.)

भीष्मः पुरुषमानी च जितकाशी तथैव च। तस्मात्प्रतिक्रिया युक्ता भीष्मे कारयितुं त्वया ॥५-१७६-१२॥
bhīṣmaḥ puruṣamānī ca jitakāśī tathaiva ca। tasmātpratikriyā yuktā bhīṣme kārayituṃ tvayā ॥5-176-12॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; पुरुषमानी (puruṣamānī) - proud man; च (ca) - and; जितकाशी (jitakāśī) - conqueror of Kashi; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रतिक्रिया (pratikriyā) - counteraction; युक्ता (yuktā) - appropriate; भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - against Bhishma; कारयितुं (kārayituṃ) - to be made; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Bhishma, the proud man and conqueror of Kashi, likewise; therefore, an appropriate counteraction against Bhishma is to be made by you.)

mamāpyeṣa mahān brahman hṛdi kāmo'bhivartate। ghātayeyam yadi raṇe bhīṣmamityeva nityadā ॥5-176-13॥
[मम (mama) - my; अपि (api) - also; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; महान् (mahān) - great; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; अभिवर्तते (abhivartate) - arises; घातयेयम् (ghātayeyam) - I would slay; यदि (yadi) - if; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always;]
(My great desire, O Brahman, arises in the heart. I would slay Bhishma in battle, thus indeed always.)
O Brahman, I always have this great desire in my heart to slay Bhishma in battle.
भीष्मं वा शाल्वराजं वा यं वा दोषेण गच्छसि। प्रशाधि तं महाबाहो यत्कृतेऽहं सुदुःखिता ॥५-१७६-१४॥

yathāsi sṛñjayasya asya tathā mama nṛpātmaje। brūhi yat te manoduḥkhaṃ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava ॥5-176-26॥

Just as you belong to Sṛñjaya, so do I, O prince. Tell me what troubles your mind, and I shall fulfill your request.

तस्याश्च दृष्ट्वा रूपं च वयश्चाभिनवं पुनः। सौकुमार्यं परं चैव रामश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥५-१७६-२८॥
tasyāśca dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ca vayaścābhinavaṃ punaḥ। saukumāryaṃ paraṃ caiva rāmaścintāparo'bhavat ॥5-176-28॥

किमियं वक्ष्यतीत्येवं विमृशन्भृगुसत्तमः। इति दध्यौ चिरं रामः कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥५-१७६-२९॥
kim iyaṁ vakṣyatīti evaṁ vimṛśan bhṛgu-sattamaḥ। iti dadhyau ciraṁ rāmaḥ kṛpayā-abhipariplutaḥ ॥5-176-29॥

कथ्यतामिति सा भूयो रामेणोक्ता शुचिस्मिता। सर्वमेव यथातत्त्वं कथयामास भार्गवे ॥५-१७६-३०॥
kathyatāmiti sā bhūyo rāmeṇoktā śucismitā। sarvameva yathātattvaṃ kathayāmāsa bhārgave ॥5-176-30॥

tacchrutvā jāmadagnyas tu rājaputryā vacas tadā। uvāca tāṃ varārohāṃ niścityārthaviniścayam ॥5-176-31॥

प्रेषयिष्यामि भीष्माय कुरुश्रेष्ठाय भामिनि। करिष्यति वचो धर्म्यं श्रुत्वा मे स नराधिपः ॥५-१७६-३२॥

न चेत्करिष्यति वचो मयोक्तं जाह्नवीसुतः। धक्ष्याम्येनं रणे भद्रे सामात्यं शस्त्रतेजसा ॥५-१७६-३३॥
na cetkariṣyati vaco mayoktaṃ jāhnavīsutaḥ। dhakṣyāmyenaṃ raṇe bhadre sāmātyaṃ śastratejasā ॥5-176-33॥

atha vā te matistatra rājaputri nivartate। tāvacchālvapatiṃ vīraṃ yojayāmyatra karmaṇi ॥5-176-34॥

एतत्सर्वं विनिश्चित्य स्वबुद्ध्या भृगुनन्दन। यदत्रौपयिकं कार्यं तच्चिन्तयितुमर्हसि ॥५-१७६-३७॥
etatsarvaṁ viniścitya svabuddhyā bhṛgunandana। yadatraupayikaṁ kāryaṁ taccintayitum arhasi ॥5-176-37॥
