एवमुक्तस्तदा रामो जहि भीष्ममिति प्रभो। उवाच रुदतीं कन्यां चोदयन्तीं पुनः पुनः ॥५-१७७-१॥
evamuktastadā rāmo jahi bhīṣmamiti prabho। uvāca rudatīṃ kanyāṃ codayantīṃ punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-177-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तदा (tadā) - then; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; जहि (jahi) - slay; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; उवाच (uvāca) - said; रुदतीम् (rudatīm) - weeping; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; चोदयन्तीम् (codayantīm) - urging; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus spoken, then Rama, "Slay Bhishma, O lord," said to the weeping maiden urging again and again.)
Then Rama, having been spoken to thus, said to the weeping maiden who was urging again and again, "O lord, slay Bhishma."
काश्ये कामं न गृह्णामि शस्त्रं वै वरवर्णिनि। ऋते ब्रह्मविदां हेतोः किमन्यत्करवाणि ते ॥५-१७७-२॥
kāśye kāmaṃ na gṛhṇāmi śastraṃ vai varavarṇini। ṛte brahmavidāṃ hetoḥ kimanyatkaravāṇi te ॥5-177-2॥
[काश्ये (kāśye) - in Kāśi; कामं (kāmaṃ) - desire; न (na) - not; गृह्णामि (gṛhṇāmi) - I take; शस्त्रं (śastram) - weapon; वै (vai) - indeed; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O beautiful one; ऋते (ṛte) - except; ब्रह्मविदां (brahmavidāṃ) - of the knowers of Brahman; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - for the sake; किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; ते (te) - for you;]
(In Kāśi, I do not take up weapons, O beautiful one, except for the sake of the knowers of Brahman; what else shall I do for you?)
In the city of Kāśi, I refrain from taking up arms, O beautiful lady, unless it is for the cause of those who know Brahman; what else can I do for you?
वाचा भीष्मश्च शाल्वश्च मम राज्ञि वशानुगौ। भविष्यतोऽनवद्याङ्गि तत्करिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥५-१७७-३॥
vācā bhīṣmaśca śālvaśca mama rājñi vaśānugau। bhaviṣyato'navadyāṅgi tatkariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ ॥5-177-3॥
[वाचा (vācā) - by word; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; च (ca) - and; शाल्वः (śālvaḥ) - Shalva; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; वशानुगौ (vaśānugau) - obedient; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - will be; अनवद्याङ्गि (anavadyāṅgi) - O flawless one; तत् (tat) - that; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve;]
(By word, Bhishma and Shalva, my obedient ones, O queen, will be. O flawless one, I will do that. Do not grieve.)
Bhishma and Shalva, who are obedient to my words, will be there, O queen. O flawless one, I will ensure that happens. Do not worry.
न तु शस्त्रं ग्रहीष्यामि कथञ्चिदपि भामिनि। ऋते नियोगाद्विप्राणामेष मे समयः कृतः ॥५-१७७-४॥
na tu śastraṃ grahīṣyāmi kathañcidapi bhāmini। ṛte niyogādviprāṇāmeṣa me samayaḥ kṛtaḥ ॥5-177-4॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; शस्त्रं (śastram) - weapon; ग्रहीष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - I will take; कथञ्चिदपि (kathañcidapi) - in any way; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O beautiful lady; ऋते (ṛte) - without; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - command; विप्राणाम् (viprāṇām) - of the Brahmins; एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - my; समयः (samayaḥ) - promise; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made;]
(But I will not take up weapons in any way, O beautiful lady, without the command of the Brahmins; this promise of mine is made.)
However, O beautiful lady, I have made a vow not to take up arms unless instructed by the Brahmins.
अम्बोवाच॥

The mother spoke:
मम दुःखं भगवता व्यपनेयं यतस्ततः। तत्तु भीष्मप्रसूतं मे तं जहीश्वर माचिरम् ॥५-१७७-५॥
mama duḥkhaṃ bhagavatā vyapaneyaṃ yatastataḥ। tattu bhīṣmaprasūtaṃ me taṃ jahīśvara māciram ॥5-177-5॥
[मम (mama) - my; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Lord; व्यपनेयं (vyapaneyaṃ) - should be removed; यतः (yataḥ) - since; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; भीष्मप्रसूतं (bhīṣmaprasūtaṃ) - born of Bhishma; मे (me) - my; तम् (tam) - him; जहि (jahi) - destroy; ईश्वर (īśvara) - O Lord; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - long;]
(My sorrow should be removed by the Lord since therefore. But that born of Bhishma, my him destroy, O Lord, not long.)
My sorrow should be removed by the Lord because it is caused by Bhishma. O Lord, please destroy him quickly.

काशिकन्ये पुनर्ब्रूहि भीष्मस्ते चरणावुभौ। शिरसा वन्दनार्होऽपि ग्रहीष्यति गिरा मम ॥५-१७७-६॥
kāśikanye punarbrūhi bhīṣmaste caraṇāvubhau। śirasā vandanārho'pi grahīṣyati girā mama ॥5-177-6॥
[काशिकन्ये (kāśikanye) - O daughter of Kashi; पुनः (punar) - again; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; ते (te) - your; चरणौ (caraṇau) - feet; उभौ (ubhau) - both; शिरसा (śirasā) - with head; वन्दनार्हः (vandanārhaḥ) - worthy of reverence; अपि (api) - even; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - will accept; गिरा (girā) - by word; मम (mama) - my;]
(O daughter of Kashi, speak again. Bhishma, even though worthy of reverence, will accept both your feet with his head by my word.)
O daughter of Kashi, please speak again. Bhishma, who is worthy of reverence, will bow his head to accept both your feet, as per my words.

जहि भीष्मं रणे राम मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम्। प्रतिश्रुतं च यदि तत्सत्यं कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥५-१७७-७॥
jahi bhīṣmaṃ raṇe rāma mama cedicchasi priyam। pratiśrutaṃ ca yadi tatsatyaṃ kartumihārhasi ॥5-177-7॥
[जहि (jahi) - conquer; भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṃ) - Bhishma; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; राम (rāma) - Rama; मम (mama) - my; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; प्रियम् (priyam) - pleasure; प्रतिश्रुतं (pratiśrutaṃ) - promised; च (ca) - and; यदि (yadi) - if; तत् (tat) - that; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should;]
(Conquer Bhishma in battle, Rama, if you wish my pleasure. If that promised truth, you should do here.)
Rama, if you desire to please me, you should defeat Bhishma in battle. If you have promised this, then you must fulfill it here.

तयोः संवदतोरेवं राजन्रामाम्बयोस्तदा। अकृतव्रणो जामदग्न्यमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५-१७७-८॥
tayoḥ saṃvadatorevaṃ rājanrāmāmabayostadā। akṛtavraṇo jāmadagnyamidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥5-177-8॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; संवदतोः (saṃvadatoḥ) - conversing; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रामाम्बयोः (rāmāmabayoḥ) - of Rāma and Ambā; तदा (tadā) - then; अकृतव्रणः (akṛtavraṇaḥ) - unwounded; जामदग्न्यम् (jāmadagnyam) - to Jāmadagnya; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Of those two conversing thus, O king, then the unwounded one said this speech to Jāmadagnya.)
While Rāma and Ambā were conversing, O king, the unwounded one addressed Jāmadagnya with these words.
शरणागतां महाबाहो कन्यां न त्यक्तुमर्हसि। जहि भीष्मं रणे राम गर्जन्तमसुरं यथा ॥५-१७७-९॥
śaraṇāgatāṃ mahābāho kanyāṃ na tyaktumarhasi। jahi bhīṣmaṃ raṇe rāma garjantamasuraṃ yathā ॥5-177-9॥
[शरणागताम् (śaraṇāgatām) - who has sought refuge; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कन्याम् (kanyām) - the girl; न (na) - not; त्यक्तुम् (tyaktum) - to abandon; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you should; जहि (jahi) - slay; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; राम (rāma) - O Rama; गर्जन्तम् (garjantam) - roaring; असुरम् (asuram) - demon; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(O mighty-armed, you should not abandon the girl who has sought refuge. Slay Bhishma in battle, O Rama, as you would a roaring demon.)
O mighty-armed one, do not abandon the girl who has sought your protection. Defeat Bhishma in battle, O Rama, just as you would vanquish a roaring demon.
यदि भीष्मस्त्वयाहूतो रणे राम महामुने। निर्जितोऽस्मीति वा ब्रूयात्कुर्याद्वा वचनं तव ॥५-१७७-१०॥
yadi bhīṣmastvayāhūto raṇe rāma mahāmune। nirjito'smīti vā brūyātkuryādvā vacanaṃ tava ॥5-177-10॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आहूतः (āhūtaḥ) - invited; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; राम (rāma) - Rama; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; निर्जितः (nirjitaḥ) - defeated; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - he might say; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - he might do; वा (vā) - or; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - word; तव (tava) - your;]
(If Bhishma, invited by you in battle, O great sage Rama, might say or do your word, 'I am defeated'.)
If Bhishma, whom you invited to battle, O great sage Rama, were to declare 'I am defeated' or act according to your word.
कृतमस्या भवेत्कार्यं कन्याया भृगुनन्दन। वाक्यं सत्यं च ते वीर भविष्यति कृतं विभो ॥५-१७७-११॥
kṛtamasya bhavetkāryaṃ kanyāyā bhṛgunandana| vākyaṃ satyaṃ ca te vīra bhaviṣyati kṛtaṃ vibho ॥5-177-11॥
[कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अस्या (asyā) - her; भवेत् (bhavet) - will be; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; कन्याया (kanyāyā) - of the maiden; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhrigu; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - statement; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - true; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; वीर (vīra) - hero; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(The task of this maiden will be done, O descendant of Bhrigu. Your statement will be true, O hero, it will be done, O lord.)
O descendant of Bhrigu, the task of this maiden will be accomplished. Your words will come true, O hero, it shall be done, O lord.
इयं चापि प्रतिज्ञा ते तदा राम महामुने। जित्वा वै क्षत्रियान्सर्वान्ब्राह्मणेषु प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥५-१७७-१२॥
iyaṃ cāpi pratijñā te tadā rāma mahāmune। jitvā vai kṣatriyānsarvānbrahmaṇeṣu pratiśrutam ॥5-177-12॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रतिज्ञा (pratijñā) - promise; ते (te) - your; तदा (tadā) - then; राम (rāma) - Rama; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षत्रियान् (kṣatriyān) - Kshatriyas; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - among Brahmins; प्रतिश्रुतम् (pratiśrutam) - promised;]
(This promise of yours, then, O great sage Rama, having conquered indeed all the Kshatriyas, was promised among the Brahmins.)
O great sage Rama, this promise of yours was made when you had conquered all the Kshatriyas and was declared among the Brahmins.
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रश्चैव रणे यदि। ब्रह्मद्विड्भविता तं वै हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥५-१७७-१३॥
brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdraścaiva raṇe yadi। brahmadviḍbhavitā taṃ vai haniṣyāmīti bhārgava ॥5-177-13॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - Kshatriya; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - Vaishya; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - Shudra; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यदि (yadi) - if; ब्रह्मद्विट् (brahmadviṭ) - enemy of Brahmins; भविता (bhavitā) - will become; तम् (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - Bhrigu's descendant;]
(If a Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra becomes an enemy of Brahmins in battle, indeed, I will kill him, thus said Bhrigu's descendant.)
Bhrigu's descendant declared that if any Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra becomes an enemy of Brahmins in battle, he will indeed kill him.
शरणं हि प्रपन्नानां भीतानां जीवितार्थिनाम्। न शक्ष्यामि परित्यागं कर्तुं जीवन्कथञ्चन ॥५-१७७-१४॥
śaraṇaṃ hi prapannānāṃ bhītānāṃ jīvitārthinām। na śakṣyāmi parityāgaṃ kartuṃ jīvan kathaṃcana ॥5-177-14॥
[शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रपन्नानाम् (prapannānām) - of those who have surrendered; भीतानाम् (bhītānām) - of the frightened; जीवितार्थिनाम् (jīvitārthinām) - of those seeking life; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यामि (śakṣyāmi) - I am able; परित्यागम् (parityāgam) - abandonment; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Indeed, I am not able to abandon the refuge of those who have surrendered, the frightened, and those seeking life, in any way while living.)
I cannot forsake those who have sought refuge, those who are frightened, and those who seek life, in any way while I am alive.
यश्च क्षत्रं रणे कृत्स्नं विजेष्यति समागतम्। दृप्तात्मानमहं तं च हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥५-१७७-१५॥
yaśca kṣatraṃ raṇe kṛtsnaṃ vijeṣyati samāgatam। dṛptātmānamahaṃ taṃ ca haniṣyāmīti bhārgava ॥5-177-15॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; क्षत्रम् (kṣatram) - warriors; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; विजेष्यति (vijeṣyati) - will conquer; समागतम् (samāgatam) - assembled; दृप्तात्मानम् (dṛptātmānam) - arrogant; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - will slay; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - Bhārgava;]
(And Bhārgava said, 'I will slay him who will conquer all the warriors assembled in battle, the arrogant one.')
Bhārgava declared that he would slay the arrogant warrior who would conquer all the assembled warriors in battle.
स एवं विजयी राम भीष्मः कुरुकुलोद्वहः। तेन युध्यस्व सङ्ग्रामे समेत्य भृगुनन्दन ॥५-१७७-१६॥
sa evaṃ vijayī rāma bhīṣmaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ। tena yudhyasva saṅgrāme sametya bhṛgunandana ॥5-177-16॥
[स (sa) - he; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विजयी (vijayī) - victorious; राम (rāma) - Rama; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; कुरुकुलोद्वहः (kurukulodvahaḥ) - the upholder of the Kuru dynasty; तेन (tena) - with him; युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; भृगुनन्दन (bhṛgunandana) - O descendant of Bhrigu;]
(He, thus victorious Rama, Bhishma, the upholder of the Kuru dynasty. With him, fight in battle having met, O descendant of Bhrigu.)
Thus, the victorious Rama, known as Bhishma, the upholder of the Kuru dynasty, is to be met in battle. Engage in combat with him, O descendant of Bhrigu.

स्मराम्यहं पूर्वकृतां प्रतिज्ञामृषिसत्तम। तथैव च करिष्यामि यथा साम्नैव लप्स्यते ॥५-१७७-१७॥
smarāmyahaṃ pūrvakṛtāṃ pratijñāmṛṣisattama। tathaiva ca kariṣyāmi yathā sāmnaiva lapsyate ॥5-177-17॥
[स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; अहम् (aham) - I; पूर्वकृताम् (pūrvakṛtām) - previously made; प्रतिज्ञाम् (pratijñām) - promise; ऋषिसत्तम (ṛṣisattama) - O best of sages; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यथा (yathā) - so that; साम्ना (sāmnā) - by conciliation; एव (eva) - only; लप्स्यते (lapsyate) - will be obtained;]
(I remember the promise previously made, O best of sages. I will do in the same way so that it will be obtained by conciliation only.)
I recall the promise I made earlier, O esteemed sage. I will act accordingly to ensure it is fulfilled through peaceful means.
कार्यमेतन्महद्ब्रह्मन्काशिकन्यामनोगतम्। गमिष्यामि स्वयं तत्र कन्यामादाय यत्र सः ॥५-१७७-१८॥
kāryametad mahad brahman kāśikanyāmanogatam। gamiṣyāmi svayaṃ tatra kanyāmādāya yatra saḥ ॥5-177-18॥
[कार्य (kārya) - task; एतत् (etat) - this; महद् (mahad) - great; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; काशिकन्याम् (kāśikanyām) - Kashi's daughter; अनोगतम् (anogatam) - in mind; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I will go; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; तत्र (tatra) - there; कन्याम् (kanyām) - daughter; आदाय (ādāya) - taking; यत्र (yatra) - where; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(This great task, O Brahman, concerning Kashi's daughter is in mind. I will go there myself, taking the daughter, where he is.)
O Brahman, I have a significant task in mind regarding the daughter of Kashi. I will personally go there to bring the daughter to where he is.
यदि भीष्मो रणश्लाघी न करिष्यति मे वचः। हनिष्याम्येनमुद्रिक्तमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥५-१७७-१९॥
yadi bhīṣmo raṇaślāghī na kariṣyati me vacaḥ। haniṣyāmyenamudriktamiti me niścitā matiḥ ॥5-177-19॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; रणश्लाघी (raṇaślāghī) - boastful in battle; न (na) - not; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do; मे (me) - my; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; एनम् (enam) - him; उद्रिक्तम् (udriktam) - arrogant; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; निश्चिता (niścitā) - determined; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind;]
(If Bhishma, boastful in battle, does not follow my words, I will kill him, arrogant as he is, thus is my determined mind.)
If Bhishma, who is boastful in battle, does not heed my words, I am determined to kill him, for he is arrogant. This is my firm resolve.
न हि बाणा मयोत्सृष्टाः सज्जन्तीह शरीरिणाम्। कायेषु विदितं तुभ्यं पुरा क्षत्रियसङ्गरे ॥५-१७७-२०॥
na hi bāṇā mayotsṛṣṭāḥ sajjantīha śarīriṇām। kāyeṣu viditaṃ tubhyaṃ purā kṣatriyasaṅgare ॥5-177-20॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; बाणा (bāṇā) - arrows; मया (mayā) - by me; उत्सृष्टाः (utsṛṣṭāḥ) - released; सज्जन्ति (sajjanti) - attach; इह (iha) - here; शरीरिणाम् (śarīriṇām) - to bodies; कायेषु (kāyeṣu) - in bodies; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; पुरा (purā) - before; क्षत्रियसङ्गरे (kṣatriyasaṅgare) - in the battle of warriors;]
(The arrows released by me do not attach here to bodies; this is known to you before in the battle of warriors.)
The arrows I have released do not strike the bodies here; you already know this from the previous battles among warriors.
भीष्म उवाच॥

एवमुक्त्वा ततो रामः सह तैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः। प्रयाणाय मतिं कृत्वा समुत्तस्थौ महामनाः ॥५-१७७-२१॥
evamuktvā tato rāmaḥ saha tairbrahmavādibhiḥ। prayāṇāya matiṃ kṛtvā samuttasthau mahāmanāḥ ॥5-177-21॥

tataste tāmuṣitvā tu rajanīṃ tatra tāpasāḥ। hutāgnayo japtajapyāḥ pratasturmajjiġhāṃsayā ॥5-177-22॥
