ततस्तृतीये दिवसे समे देशे व्यवस्थितः। प्रेषयामास मे राजन्प्राप्तोऽस्मीति महाव्रतः ॥५-१७८-१॥
tatas tṛtīye divase same deśe vyavasthitaḥ। preṣayām āsa me rājanprāpto'smīti mahāvrataḥ ॥5-178-1॥
[ततः (tatas) - then; तृतीये (tṛtīye) - on the third; दिवसे (divase) - day; समे (same) - in the same; देशे (deśe) - place; व्यवस्थितः (vyavasthitaḥ) - situated; प्रेषयामास (preṣayām āsa) - sent; मे (me) - me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - arrived; अस्मि (asmi) - am; इति (iti) - thus; महाव्रतः (mahāvrataḥ) - great vow;]
(Then, on the third day, situated in the same place, he sent me, O king, saying 'I have arrived', the one of great vow.)
On the third day, being in the same place, the one with a great vow sent a message to me, O king, saying 'I have arrived'.
तमागतमहं श्रुत्वा विषयान्तं महाबलम्। अभ्यगच्छं जवेनाशु प्रीत्या तेजोनिधिं प्रभुम् ॥५-१७८-२॥
tamāgatamahaṃ śrutvā viṣayāntaṃ mahābalam। abhyagacchaṃ javenāśu prītyā tejonidhiṃ prabhum ॥5-178-2॥
[तम् (tam) - that; आगत (āgata) - arrived; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विषयान्तम् (viṣayāntam) - to the end of the subject; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - great strength; अभ्यगच्छम् (abhyagaccham) - approached; जवेना (javenā) - with speed; आशु (āśu) - quickly; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; तेजोनिधिम् (tejonidhim) - the repository of splendor; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - lord;]
(Having heard that he had arrived, I quickly approached the lord, the repository of splendor, with affection and great strength to the end of the subject.)
Upon hearing of his arrival, I swiftly and affectionately approached the lord, who is the repository of splendor and great strength, to conclude the matter.
गां पुरस्कृत्य राजेन्द्र ब्राह्मणैः परिवारितः। ऋत्विग्भिर्देवकल्पैश्च तथैव च पुरोहितैः ॥५-१७८-३॥
gāṃ puraskṛtya rājendra brāhmaṇaiḥ parivāritaḥ। ṛtvigbhirdevakalpaiśca tathaiva ca purohitaiḥ ॥5-178-3॥

(Having placed the cow in front, O king, surrounded by Brahmins, by priests like gods, and also by family priests.)
O King, having placed the cow in front, you were surrounded by Brahmins, priests who are like gods, and also by family priests.
स मामभिगतं दृष्ट्वा जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। प्रतिजग्राह तां पूजां वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥५-१७८-४॥
sa māmabhigataṃ dṛṣṭvā jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān। pratijagrāha tāṃ pūjāṃ vacanaṃ cedamabravīt ॥5-178-4॥
[स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अभिगतं (abhigataṃ) - approached; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagnya; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the powerful; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; तां (tāṃ) - that; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - words; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(He, having seen me approached, the powerful Jamadagnya accepted that worship and spoke these words.)
Upon seeing me approach, the mighty Jamadagnya accepted the offering and spoke these words.
भीष्म कां बुद्धिमास्थाय काशिराजसुता त्वया। अकामेयमिहानीता पुनश्चैव विसर्जिता ॥५-१७८-५॥
bhīṣma kāṃ buddhimāsthāya kāśirājasutā tvayā। akāme'yamihānītā punaścaiva visarjitā ॥5-178-5॥

(Bhishma, what intelligence having adopted, the daughter of the King of Kashi by you, unwilling, this here brought again and indeed dismissed.)
Bhishma, by what intelligence did you bring here the unwilling daughter of the King of Kashi, and then dismiss her again?
विभ्रंशिता त्वया हीयं धर्मावाप्तेः परावरात्। परामृष्टां त्वया हीमां को हि गन्तुमिहार्हति ॥५-१७८-६॥
vibhraṁśitā tvayā hīyaṁ dharmāvāpteḥ parāvarāt. parāmṛṣṭāṁ tvayā hīmāṁ ko hi gantumihārhati ॥5-178-6॥
[विभ्रंशिता (vibhraṁśitā) - fallen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; इयं (iyaṁ) - this; धर्मावाप्तेः (dharmāvāpteḥ) - of the attainment of righteousness; परावरात् (parāvarāt) - from the highest to the lowest; परामृष्टां (parāmṛṣṭāṁ) - touched; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; हि (hi) - indeed; इमां (imāṁ) - this; कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इह (iha) - here; अर्हति (arhati) - is able;]
(Indeed, this fallen from the attainment of righteousness from the highest to the lowest, touched by you, who indeed is able to go here?)
Indeed, this has fallen from the attainment of righteousness from the highest to the lowest, and having been touched by you, who indeed is able to proceed here?
प्रत्याख्याता हि शाल्वेन त्वया नीतेति भारत। तस्मादिमां मन्नियोगात्प्रतिगृह्णीष्व भारत ॥५-१७८-७॥
pratyākhyātā hi śālvena tvayā nīteti bhārata। tasmādimāṃ manniyogāt pratigṛhṇīṣva bhārata ॥5-178-7॥
[प्रत्याख्याता (pratyākhyātā) - rejected; हि (hi) - indeed; शाल्वेन (śālvena) - by Śālva; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नीता (nītā) - brought; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इमाम् (imām) - this; मन्नियोगात् (manniyogāt) - by my command; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Rejected indeed by Śālva, brought by you thus, O Bhārata. Therefore, by my command, accept this, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, since this has been rejected by Śālva and brought by you, therefore, by my command, accept it.
स्वधर्मं पुरुषव्याघ्र राजपुत्री लभत्वियम्। न युक्तमवमानोऽयं कर्तुं राज्ञा त्वयानघ ॥५-१७८-८॥
svadharmaṃ puruṣavyāghra rājaputrī labhatviyam। na yuktamavamāno'yaṃ kartuṃ rājñā tvayānagha ॥5-178-8॥
[स्वधर्मं (svadharmaṃ) - own duty; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; लभत्वियम् (labhatviyam) - may obtain this; न (na) - not; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; अवमानः (avamānaḥ) - disrespect; अयम् (ayam) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - sinless one;]
(The princess may obtain her own duty, O tiger among men. It is not proper for you, O sinless one, to do this disrespect by the king.)
O tiger among men, let the princess obtain her rightful duty. It is not appropriate for you, O sinless one, to disrespect the king in this manner.
ततस्तं नातिमनसं समुदीक्ष्याहमब्रुवम्। नाहमेनां पुनर्दद्यां भ्रात्रे ब्रह्मन्कथञ्चन ॥५-१७८-९॥
tatastaṁ nātimānasaṁ samudīkṣyāhamabruvam। nāhamenāṁ punardadyāṁ bhrātre brahmankathañcana ॥5-178-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; न (na) - not; अतिमनसम् (atimānasam) - very intelligent; समुदीक्ष्य (samudīkṣya) - having observed; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; एनाम् (enām) - this; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दद्याम् (dadyām) - would give; भ्रात्रे (bhrātre) - to brother; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Then, having observed him not very intelligent, I said, "O Brahman, I would not give this again to the brother in any way.")
Then, noticing that he was not very intelligent, I said, "O Brahman, I would never give this back to the brother under any circumstances."
शाल्वस्याहमिति प्राह पुरा मामिह भार्गव। मया चैवाभ्यनुज्ञाता गता सौभपुरं प्रति ॥५-१७८-१०॥
śālvasya aham iti prāha purā mām iha bhārgava। mayā ca eva abhyanujñātā gatā saubhapuraṃ prati ॥5-178-10॥
[शाल्वस्य (śālvasya) - of Śālva; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; प्राह (prāha) - said; पुरा (purā) - before; माम् (mām) - to me; इह (iha) - here; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यनुज्ञाता (abhyanujñātā) - permitted; गता (gatā) - gone; सौभपुरं (saubhapuraṃ) - to the city of Saubha; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(He said, 'I am of Śālva,' before, to me here, O Bhārgava. Permitted by me, she has gone towards the city of Saubha.)
O Bhārgava, he once said to me here, 'I belong to Śālva.' With my permission, she has gone to the city of Saubha.
न भयान्नाप्यनुक्रोशान्न लोभान्नार्थकाम्यया। क्षत्रधर्ममहं जह्यामिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥५-१७८-११॥
na bhayānnāpyanukrośānna lobhānna arthakāmyayā। kṣatradharmaṁahaṁ jahyāmiti me vratamāhitam ॥5-178-11॥
[न (na) - not; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; अनुक्रोशात् (anukrośāt) - from compassion; न (na) - not; लोभात् (lobhāt) - from greed; न (na) - not; अर्थकाम्यया (arthakāmyayā) - for desire of wealth; क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - warrior's duty; अहम् (aham) - I; जह्याम् (jahyām) - will abandon; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; आहितम् (āhitam) - established;]
(Not from fear, nor from compassion, nor from greed, nor for desire of wealth, will I abandon the warrior's duty; thus is my vow established.)
I have established a vow that I will not abandon my warrior's duty out of fear, compassion, greed, or desire for wealth.
अथ मामब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः। न करिष्यसि चेदेतद्वाक्यं मे कुरुपुङ्गव ॥५-१७८-१२॥
atha mām abravīd rāmaḥ krodha-paryākula-īkṣaṇaḥ। na kariṣyasi ced etad vākyaṃ me kuru-puṅgava ॥5-178-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; पर्याकुल (paryākula) - agitated; ईक्षणः (īkṣaṇaḥ) - eyes; न (na) - not; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - you will do; चेत् (ced) - if; एतत् (etat) - this; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - word; मे (me) - my; कुरु (kuru) - Kuru; पुङ्गव (puṅgava) - bull;]
(Then Rama, with eyes agitated by anger, said to me: "If you do not perform this word of mine, O bull of the Kurus.")
Then Rama, with eyes filled with anger, said to me: "O best of the Kurus, if you do not carry out this command of mine."
हनिष्यामि सहामात्यं त्वामद्येति पुनः पुनः। संरम्भादब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥५-१७८-१३॥
haniṣyāmi sahāmātyaṃ tvāmadye'ti punaḥ punaḥ। saṃrambhādabravīdrāmaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ॥5-178-13॥
[हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I will kill; सहामात्यम् (sahāmātyam) - with ministers; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; संरम्भात् (saṃrambhāt) - in anger; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः (krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ) - with eyes rolling in anger;]
(I will kill you along with your ministers today, thus again and again, said Rama in anger, with eyes rolling in anger.)
Rama, with eyes rolling in anger, repeatedly said in fury, "I will kill you along with your ministers today."
तमहं गीर्भिरिष्टाभिः पुनः पुनररिंदमम्। अयाचं भृगुशार्दूलं न चैव प्रशशाम सः ॥५-१७८-१४॥
tam ahaṁ gīrbhir iṣṭābhiḥ punaḥ punar ariṁdamam। ayācaṁ bhṛguśārdūlaṁ na caiva praśaśāma saḥ ॥5-178-14॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; गीर्भिः (gīrbhiḥ) - with words; इष्टाभिः (iṣṭābhiḥ) - pleasing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अरिंदमम् (ariṁdamam) - O subduer of enemies; अयाचम् (ayācam) - requested; भृगुशार्दूलम् (bhṛguśārdūlam) - O tiger among the Bhrigus; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रशशाम (praśaśāma) - ceased; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(I requested that O subduer of enemies, O tiger among the Bhrigus, again and again with pleasing words; and he indeed did not cease.)
I repeatedly requested the great sage, the tiger among the Bhrigus, with pleasing words, but he did not relent.
तमहं प्रणम्य शिरसा भूयो ब्राह्मणसत्तमम्। अब्रुवं कारणं किं तद्यत्त्वं योद्धुमिहेच्छसि ॥५-१७८-१५॥
tam ahaṃ praṇamya śirasā bhūyo brāhmaṇasattamam। abruvaṃ kāraṇaṃ kiṃ tadyat tvaṃ yoddhum ihecchasi ॥5-178-15॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with head; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; ब्राह्मणसत्तमम् (brāhmaṇasattamam) - O best of Brahmanas; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; किम् (kim) - what; तत् (tat) - that; यत् (yat) - which; त्वम् (tvam) - you; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इह (iha) - here; इच्छसि (icchasi) - wish;]
(Having bowed my head again to that best of Brahmanas, I said, "What is the reason that you wish to fight here?")
I bowed my head once more to the revered Brahmana and asked, "Why do you wish to engage in battle here?"
इष्वस्त्रं मम बालस्य भवतैव चतुर्विधम्। उपदिष्टं महाबाहो शिष्योऽस्मि तव भार्गव ॥५-१७८-१६॥
iṣvastraṃ mama bālasya bhavataiva caturvidham। upadiṣṭaṃ mahābāho śiṣyo'smi tava bhārgava ॥5-178-16॥
[इष्वस्त्रं (iṣvastraṃ) - weapon; मम (mama) - my; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the boy; भवतैव (bhavataiva) - by you indeed; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - four types; उपदिष्टं (upadiṣṭaṃ) - taught; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; शिष्यः (śiṣyaḥ) - disciple; अस्मि (asmi) - am; तव (tava) - your; भार्गव (bhārgava) - Bhargava;]
(The weapon of my boy, of four types, was taught by you indeed, O mighty-armed. I am your disciple, Bhargava.)
O mighty-armed Bhargava, you have indeed taught my boy the four types of weapons. I am your disciple.
ततो मामब्रवीद्रामः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः। जानीषे मां गुरुं भीष्म न चेमां प्रतिगृह्णसे ॥ सुतां काश्यस्य कौरव्य मत्प्रियार्थं महीपते ॥५-१७८-१७॥
tato māmabravīdrāmaḥ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ। jānīṣe māṁ guruṁ bhīṣma na cemāṁ pratigṛhṇase ॥ sutāṁ kāśyasya kauravya matpriyārthaṁ mahīpate ॥5-178-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; संरक्त (saṁrakta) - reddened; लोचनः (locanaḥ) - eyes; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - you know; मां (māṁ) - me; गुरुं (guruṁ) - teacher; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इमां (imāṁ) - this; प्रतिगृह्णसे (pratigṛhṇase) - accept; सुतां (sutāṁ) - daughter; काश्यस्य (kāśyasya) - of Kashya; कौरव्य (kauravya) - Kauravya; मत् (mat) - my; प्रियार्थं (priyārthaṁ) - for the sake of love; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
(Then Rama, with eyes reddened by anger, said to me: "You know me, Bhishma, as your teacher, yet you do not accept this daughter of Kashya, O Kauravya, for my sake, O king.")

न हि ते विद्यते शान्तिरन्यथा कुरुनन्दन। गृहाणेमां महाबाहो रक्षस्व कुलमात्मनः ॥ त्वया विभ्रंशिता हीयं भर्तारं नाभिगच्छति ॥५-१७८-१८॥
na hi te vidyate śāntiranyathā kurunandana। gṛhāṇemāṃ mahābāho rakṣasva kulamātmanaḥ ॥ tvayā vibhraṃśitā hīyaṃ bhartāraṃ nābhigacchati ॥5-178-18॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O descendant of Kuru; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; इमां (imāṃ) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; रक्षस्व (rakṣasva) - protect; कुलम् (kulam) - family; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विभ्रंशिता (vibhraṃśitā) - abandoned; हि (hi) - indeed; इयम् (iyam) - this; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; न (na) - not; अभिगच्छति (abhigacchati) - approaches;]
(Indeed, peace does not exist for you otherwise, O descendant of Kuru. Accept this, O mighty-armed one, protect your family. By you abandoned, indeed, this does not approach the husband.)
O descendant of Kuru, you will not find peace otherwise. Accept this responsibility, O mighty-armed one, and protect your family. If you abandon it, this will not approach the husband.
तथा ब्रुवन्तं तमहं रामं परपुरञ्जयम्। नैतदेवं पुनर्भावि ब्रह्मर्षे किं श्रमेण ते ॥५-१७८-१९॥
tathā bruvantaṃ tamahaṃ rāmaṃ parapurañjayam। naitadevaṃ punarbhāvi brahmarṣe kiṃ śrameṇa te ॥5-178-19॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; ब्रुवन्तं (bruvantaṃ) - speaking; तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; परपुरञ्जयम् (parapurañjayam) - conqueror of enemy cities; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; भावि (bhāvi) - will happen; ब्रह्मर्षे (brahmarṣe) - O sage; किम् (kim) - why; श्रमेण (śrameṇa) - with effort; ते (te) - your;]
(Thus speaking to him, I, Rama, the conqueror of enemy cities, said, "This will not happen again, O sage, why your effort?")
I, Rama, the conqueror of enemy cities, addressed him saying, "O sage, this will not happen again, so why exert yourself?"
गुरुत्वं त्वयि सम्प्रेक्ष्य जामदग्न्य पुरातनम्। प्रसादये त्वां भगवंस्त्यक्तैषा हि पुरा मया ॥५-१७८-२०॥
gurutvaṁ tvayi samprekṣya jāmadagnya purātanam। prasādaye tvāṁ bhagavaṁstyaktaiṣā hi purā mayā ॥5-178-20॥
[गुरुत्वं (gurutvam) - greatness; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - considering; जामदग्न्य (jāmadagnya) - of Jamadagni; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I appease; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; त्यक्ता (tyaktā) - abandoned; एषा (eṣā) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - before; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Considering the greatness in you, O Lord of Jamadagni, I appease you, for this was indeed abandoned by me before.)
O Lord, recognizing the ancient greatness in you, I seek your forgiveness, for I had indeed abandoned this before.
को जातु परभावां हि नारीं व्यालीमिव स्थिताम्। वासयेत गृहे जानन्स्त्रीणां दोषान्महात्ययान् ॥५-१७८-२१॥
ko jātu parabhāvāṃ hi nārīṃ vyālīmiva sthitām। vāsayeta gṛhe jānanstrīṇāṃ doṣānmahātyayān ॥5-178-21॥

अर्थे वा यदि वा धर्मे समर्थो देशकालवित्। अनर्थसंशयापन्नः श्रेयान्निःसंशयेन च ॥५-१७८-२९॥

यस्मात्संशयितेऽर्थेऽस्मिन्यथान्यायं प्रवर्तसे। तस्माद्योत्स्यामि सहितस्त्वया राम महाहवे ॥ पश्य मे बाहुवीर्यं च विक्रमं चातिमानुषम् ॥५-१७८-३०॥
yasmāt saṃśayite'rthe'smin yathānyāyaṃ pravartase। tasmād yotsyāmi sahitas tvayā rāma mahāhave ॥ paśya me bāhuvīryaṃ ca vikramaṃ cātimānuṣam ॥5-178-30॥

(Because you act unjustly in this doubtful matter, therefore, I will fight together with you, Rama, in the great battle. See my strength of arms and superhuman valor.)

एवं गतेऽपि तु मया यच्छक्यं भृगुनन्दन। तत्करिष्ये कुरुक्षेत्रे योत्स्ये विप्र त्वया सह ॥ द्वंद्वे राम यथेष्टं ते सज्जो भव महामुने ॥५-१७८-३१॥
evaṃ gate'pi tu mayā yacchakyaṃ bhṛgunandana। tatkariṣye kurukṣetre yotsye vipra tvayā saha ॥ dvaṃdve rāma yatheṣṭaṃ te sajjo bhava mahāmune ॥5-178-31॥

[यत् (yat) - that; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कत्थसे (katthase) - you boast; राम (rāma) - Rama; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - often; परिषत्सु (pariṣatsu) - in assemblies; वै (vai) - indeed; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - conquered; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - warriors; लोके (loke) - in the world; मया (mayā) - by me; एकेन (ekena) - alone; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(And that which you often boast, O Rama, in assemblies, that the warriors in the world have been conquered by me alone, hear that.)

न तदा जायते भीष्मो मद्विधः क्षत्रियोऽपि वा। यस्ते युद्धमयं दर्पं कामं च व्यपनाशयेत् ॥५-१७८-३७॥
na tadā jāyate bhīṣmo madvidhaḥ kṣatriyo'pi vā। yaste yuddhamayaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ ca vyapanāśayet ॥5-178-37॥

(Not then is born a Bhishma, a warrior like me, or anyone who can destroy your battle-like pride and desire.)
At that time, no one like Bhishma or any warrior is born who can destroy your pride and desire for battle.
सोऽहं जातो महाबाहो भीष्मः परपुरञ्जयः। व्यपनेष्यामि ते दर्पं युद्धे राम न संशयः ॥५-१७८-३८॥
so'haṁ jāto mahābāho bhīṣmaḥ parapurañjayaḥ। vyapaneṣyāmi te darpaṁ yuddhe rāma na saṁśayaḥ ॥5-178-38॥
