Pancharatra-Ext: Goddess Ganga intervenes in the battle between Bhishma and Bhargava.
भीष्म उवाच॥

ततो मामब्रवीद्रामः प्रहसन्निव भारत। दिष्ट्या भीष्म मया सार्धं योद्धुमिच्छसि सङ्गरे ॥५-१७९-१॥
tato māmabravīdrāmaḥ prahasanniva bhārata। diṣṭyā bhīṣma mayā sārdhaṃ yoddhumicchasi saṅgare ॥5-179-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - fortunately; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; मया (mayā) - with me; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; सङ्गरे (saṅgare) - in battle;]
(Then Rama, as if smiling, said to me, "O Bharata, fortunately, Bhishma, you wish to fight together with me in battle.")

(This I go, O descendant of Kuru, to Kurukshetra with you together. Spoken that I will do, there you may come, O subduer of enemies.)
I am going to Kurukshetra with you, O descendant of Kuru. I will do what was spoken, and you may come there, O subduer of enemies.
तत्र त्वां निहतं माता मया शरशताचितम्। जाह्नवी पश्यतां भीष्म गृध्रकङ्कबडाशनम् ॥५-१७९-३॥
tatra tvāṃ nihataṃ mātā mayā śaraśatācitam। jāhnavī paśyatāṃ bhīṣma gṛdhrakaṅkabaḍāśanam ॥5-179-3॥

इति ब्रुवाणं तमहं रामं परपुरञ्जयम्। प्रणम्य शिरसा राजन्नेवमस्त्वित्यथाब्रुवम् ॥५-१७९-७॥

एवमुक्त्वा ययौ रामः कुरुक्षेत्रं युयुत्सया। प्रविश्य नगरं चाहं सत्यवत्यै न्यवेदयम् ॥५-१७९-८॥

(Thus having spoken, Rama went to Kurukshetra with the desire to fight. Having entered the city, I informed Satyavati.)
After speaking thus, Rama proceeded to Kurukshetra with the intent to battle. Upon entering the city, I conveyed the message to Satyavati.
ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो मात्रा प्रत्यभिनन्दितः। द्विजातीन्वाच्य पुण्याहं स्वस्ति चैव महाद्युते ॥५-१७९-९॥
tataḥ kṛtasvastyayano mātṛā pratyabhinanditaḥ। dvijātīnvācya puṇyāhaṃ svasti caiva mahādyute ॥5-179-9॥

(Then the goddess, the well-wisher of all beings, said to me, 'O king, what is this that you intend?')

गत्वाहं जामदग्न्यं तं प्रयाचिष्ये कुरूद्वह। भीष्मेण सह मा योत्सीः शिष्येणेति पुनः पुनः ॥५-१७९-२३॥
gatvāhaṃ jāmadagnyaṃ taṃ prayāciṣye kurūdvaha। bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇeti punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-179-23॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अहम् (aham) - I; जामदग्न्यम् (jāmadagnyaṃ) - to Jamadagni's descendant; तम् (tam) - him; प्रयाचिष्ये (prayāciṣye) - will request; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O descendant of Kuru; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - with Bhishma; सह (saha) - with; मा (mā) - do not; योत्सीः (yotsīḥ) - fight; शिष्येण (śiṣyeṇa) - with the disciple; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Having gone, I will request him, O descendant of Kuru, do not fight with Bhishma, with the disciple, thus again and again.)
Having gone to Jamadagni's descendant, I will request him repeatedly, 'O descendant of Kuru, do not fight with Bhishma and the disciple.'
मा मैवं पुत्र निर्बन्धं कुरु विप्रेण पार्थिव। जामदग्न्येन समरे योद्धुमित्यवभर्त्सयत् ॥५-१७९-२४॥
mā maivaṃ putra nirbandhaṃ kuru vipreṇa pārthiva। jāmadagnyena samare yoddhumityavabhartsayat ॥5-179-24॥
[मा (mā) - do not; मैवं (maivaṃ) - thus; पुत्र (putra) - son; निर्बन्धं (nirbandhaṃ) - insistence; कुरु (kuru) - do; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the sage; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by Jamadagni's son; समरे (samare) - in battle; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इति (iti) - thus; अवभर्त्सयत् (avabhartsayat) - he admonished;]
(Do not thus insist, O son, to fight in battle with the sage, O king, by Jamadagni's son, thus he admonished.)
He admonished, "Do not insist, O son, on fighting in battle with the sage, O king, who is Jamadagni's son."
किं न वै क्षत्रियहरो हरतुल्यपराक्रमः। विदितः पुत्र रामस्ते यतस्त्वं योद्धुमिच्छसि ॥५-१७९-२५॥
kiṁ na vai kṣatriyaharo haratulyaparākramaḥ। viditaḥ putra rāmaste yatastvaṁ yoddhumicchasi ॥5-179-25॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षत्रियहरः (kṣatriyaharo) - destroyer of warriors; हरतुल्यपराक्रमः (haratulyaparākramaḥ) - equal in valor to Hara; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; पुत्र (putra) - son; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; ते (te) - your; यतः (yataḥ) - because; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; इच्छसि (icchasi) - wish;]
(What, is not Rama, your son, known as the destroyer of warriors, equal in valor to Hara, because you wish to fight?)
Isn't your son Rama, known for his valor equal to Lord Shiva, the destroyer of warriors? Why do you wish to fight?
ततोऽहमब्रुवं देवीमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। सर्वं तद्भरतश्रेष्ठ यथावृत्तं स्वयंवरे ॥५-१७९-२६॥
tato'ham abruvaṁ devīm abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ। sarvaṁ tad bharataśreṣṭha yathāvṛttaṁ svayaṁvare ॥5-179-26॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; अब्रुवम् (abruvam) - said; देवीम् (devīm) - to the goddess; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; तत् (tat) - that; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; यथावृत्तम् (yathāvṛttam) - as it happened; स्वयंवरे (svayaṁvare) - in the self-choice ceremony;]
(Then I said to the goddess, having saluted with joined palms, everything, O best of the Bharatas, as it happened in the self-choice ceremony.)

[यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; प्रसादितः (prasāditaḥ) - was pleased; काशिराजसुतायाः (kāśirājasutāyāḥ) - to the daughter of the king of Kashi; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; पुरातनः (purātanaḥ) - ancient;]
(As Rama, O king, was previously pleased by me, so was the ancient desire of the daughter of the king of Kashi.)
Just as Rama was pleased by me before, O King, so was the ancient desire of the daughter of the King of Kashi fulfilled.
ततः सा राममभ्येत्य जननी मे महानदी। मदर्थं तमृषिं देवी क्षमयामास भार्गवम् ॥ भीष्मेण सह मा योत्सीः शिष्येणेति वचोऽब्रवीत् ॥५-१७९-२८॥
tataḥ sā rāmamabhyetya jananī me mahānadī। madarthaṃ tamṛṣiṃ devī kṣamayāmāsa bhārgavam ॥ bhīṣmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ śiṣyeṇeti vaco'bravīt ॥5-179-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; जननी (jananī) - mother; मे (me) - my; महानदी (mahānadī) - great river; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my sake; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; देवी (devī) - goddess; क्षमयामास (kṣamayāmāsa) - forgave; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - Bhargava; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - with Bhishma; सह (saha) - with; मा (mā) - do not; योत्सीः (yotsīḥ) - fight; शिष्येण (śiṣyeṇa) - with disciple; इति (iti) - thus; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then she, my mother, the great river, approached Rama. For my sake, the goddess forgave that sage Bhargava. She said these words: "Do not fight with Bhishma, with the disciple.")
Then my mother, the great river goddess, approached Rama and forgave the sage Bhargava for my sake. She advised, "Do not engage in battle with Bhishma, who is with his disciple."
स च तामाह याचन्तीं भीष्ममेव निवर्तय। न हि मे कुरुते काममित्यहं तमुपागमम् ॥५-१७९-२९॥
sa ca tām āha yācantīṃ bhīṣmam eva nivartaya। na hi me kurute kāmam ity ahaṃ tam upāgamam ॥5-179-29॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; आह (āha) - said; याचन्तीम् (yācantīm) - begging; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; एव (eva) - only; निवर्तय (nivartaya) - turn back; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; कुरुते (kurute) - does; कामम् (kāmam) - wish; इति (iti) - thus; अहम् (aham) - I; तम् (tam) - him; उपागमम् (upāgamam) - approached;]
(And he said to her, who was begging, "Turn back Bhishma only. Indeed, he does not fulfill my wish," thus I approached him.)
He told her, who was pleading, to turn back only Bhishma, as he does not fulfill his wish, and thus I approached him.

ततो गङ्गा सुतस्नेहाद्भीष्मं पुनरुपागमत्। न चास्याः सोऽकरोद्वाक्यं क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ॥५-१७९-३०॥
tato gaṅgā sutasnehādbhīṣmaṃ punarupāgamat. na cāsyāḥ so'karodvākyaṃ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ॥5-179-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; सुतस्नेहात् (sutasnehāt) - out of affection for her son; भीष्मम् (bhīṣmam) - Bhishma; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - her; सः (saḥ) - he; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; पर्याकुल (paryākula) - agitated; ईक्षणः (īkṣaṇaḥ) - eyes;]
(Then Ganga, out of affection for her son, approached Bhishma again. But he did not speak to her, his eyes agitated with anger.)
Then, out of affection for her son, Ganga approached Bhishma again. However, he did not respond to her, as his eyes were filled with anger and agitation.
अथादृश्यत धर्मात्मा भृगुश्रेष्ठो महातपाः। आह्वयामास च पुनर्युद्धाय द्विजसत्तमः ॥५-१७९-३१॥
athādṛśyata dharmātmā bhṛguśreṣṭho mahātapāḥ। āhvayāmāsa ca punaryuddhāya dvijasattamaḥ ॥5-179-31॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; भृगुश्रेष्ठः (bhṛguśreṣṭhaḥ) - best of the Bhṛgus; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; आह्वयामास (āhvayāmāsa) - invited; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best among the twice-born;]
(Then the righteous soul, the best of the Bhṛgus, the great ascetic was seen. And the best among the twice-born invited again for battle.)
