Pancharatra-Ext: On the 23rd night, in a dream, Brahmins advised Bhishma to put Bhragava to sleep because he could not be defeated.
भीष्म उवाच॥

ततोऽहं निशि राजेन्द्र प्रणम्य शिरसा तदा। ब्राह्मणानां पितॄणां च देवतानां च सर्वशः ॥५-१८४-१॥
tato'haṃ niśi rājendra praṇamya śirasā tadā। brāhmaṇānāṃ pitṝṇāṃ ca devatānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥5-184-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; निशि (niśi) - at night; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; तदा (tadā) - then; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - to the Brahmins; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - to the ancestors; च (ca) - and; देवतानाम् (devatānām) - to the deities; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(Then I, at night, O king of kings, having bowed with the head, then to the Brahmins, to the ancestors, and to the deities in every way.)
Then, O king of kings, at night I bowed my head to the Brahmins, ancestors, and deities in every possible way.
नक्तञ्चराणां भूतानां रजन्याश्च विशां पते। शयनं प्राप्य रहिते मनसा समचिन्तयम् ॥५-१८४-२॥
naktañcarāṇāṃ bhūtānāṃ rajanyāśca viśāṃ pate। śayanaṃ prāpya rahite manasā samacintayam ॥5-184-2॥
[नक्तञ्चराणां (naktañcarāṇāṃ) - of night-wanderers; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; रजन्याश्च (rajanyāśca) - and of night; विशां (viśāṃ) - of people; पते (pate) - O lord; शयनं (śayanam) - bed; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; रहिते (rahite) - in solitude; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; समचिन्तयम् (samacintayam) - I contemplated;]
(O lord of people, having reached the bed in solitude, I contemplated with mind on the beings of night-wanderers and of night.)
O lord of the people, as I lay in bed alone, I pondered over the beings that wander at night and the essence of the night itself.
जामदग्न्येन मे युद्धमिदं परमदारुणम्। अहानि सुबहून्यद्य वर्तते सुमहात्ययम् ॥५-१८४-३॥
jāmadagnyena me yuddhamidaṃ paramadāruṇam। ahāni subahūnyadya vartate sumahātyayam ॥5-184-3॥
[जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by Jamadagni's son; मे (me) - my; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; इदं (idaṃ) - this; परम (parama) - extremely; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - terrible; अहानि (ahāni) - days; सुबहूनि (subahūni) - many; अद्य (adya) - today; वर्तते (vartate) - is happening; सुमहात्ययम् (sumahātyayam) - great calamity;]
(By Jamadagni's son, my battle, this extremely terrible, for many days today is happening, great calamity.)
Today, a great calamity is happening as my battle with Jamadagni's son continues for many days, and it is extremely terrible.
न च रामं महावीर्यं शक्नोमि रणमूर्धनि। विजेतुं समरे विप्रं जामदग्न्यं महाबलम् ॥५-१८४-४॥
na ca rāmaṃ mahāvīryaṃ śaknomi raṇamūrdhani। vijetuṃ samare vipraṃ jāmadagnyaṃ mahābalam ॥5-184-4॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; महावीर्यम् (mahāvīryam) - great heroism; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - in the battlefield; विजेतुम् (vijetuṃ) - to conquer; समरे (samare) - in battle; विप्रम् (vipraṃ) - sage; जामदग्न्यम् (jāmadagnyaṃ) - Jamadagnya; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - great strength;]
(And I am not able to conquer Rama, the one with great heroism, in the battlefield, nor the sage Jamadagnya with great strength in battle.)
I cannot defeat the mighty Rama in the battlefield, nor the powerful sage Jamadagnya.
यदि शक्यो मया जेतुं जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। दैवतानि प्रसन्नानि दर्शयन्तु निशां मम ॥५-१८४-५॥
yadi śakyo mayā jetuṃ jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān। daivatāni prasannāni darśayantu niśāṃ mama ॥5-184-5॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagnya; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; दैवतानि (daivatāni) - gods; प्रसन्नानि (prasannāni) - favorable; दर्शयन्तु (darśayantu) - may show; निशाम् (niśām) - night; मम (mama) - my;]
(If it is possible for me to conquer the mighty Jamadagnya, may the favorable gods show my night.)
If I am able to defeat the mighty Jamadagnya, may the gods show favor upon my night.
ततोऽहं निशि राजेन्द्र प्रसुप्तः शरविक्षतः। दक्षिणेनैव पार्श्वेन प्रभातसमये इव ॥५-१८४-६॥
tato'haṁ niśi rājendra prasuptaḥ śaravikṣataḥ। dakṣiṇenaiva pārśvena prabhātasamaye iva ॥5-184-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; निशि (niśi) - at night; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; प्रसुप्तः (prasuptaḥ) - asleep; शरविक्षतः (śaravikṣataḥ) - wounded by arrows; दक्षिणेन (dakṣiṇena) - on the right; एव (eva) - only; पार्श्वेन (pārśvena) - side; प्रभातसमये (prabhātasamaye) - at dawn; इव (iva) - like;]
(Then I, O king, wounded by arrows, was asleep on my right side, like at dawn.)
Then, O King, I was lying asleep on my right side, wounded by arrows, as if it were dawn.
ततोऽहं विप्रमुख्यैस्तैर्यैरस्मि पतितो रथात्। उत्थापितो धृतश्चैव मा भैरिति च सान्त्वितः ॥५-१८४-७॥
tato'haṁ vipramukhyastairyairasmi patito rathāt। utthāpito dhṛtaścaiva mā bhairiti ca sāntvitaḥ ॥5-184-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; विप्रमुख्यैः (vipramukhyaiḥ) - by the chief of the Brahmins; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; उत्थापितः (utthāpitaḥ) - raised; धृतः (dhṛtaḥ) - held; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; सान्त्वितः (sāntvitaḥ) - consoled;]
(Then I, having fallen from the chariot, was raised and held by the chief of the Brahmins, by whom I was consoled with 'Do not fear'.)
Then I fell from the chariot and was lifted and supported by the chief Brahmins, who comforted me saying, 'Do not fear.'
त एव मां महाराज स्वप्नदर्शनमेत्य वै। परिवार्याब्रुवन्वाक्यं तन्निबोध कुरूद्वह ॥५-१८४-८॥
ta eva māṃ mahārāja svapnadarśanametya vai। parivāryābruvanvākyaṃ tannibodha kurūdvaha ॥5-184-8॥
[त (ta) - they; एव (eva) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; स्वप्नदर्शनम् (svapnadarśanam) - dream vision; एत्य (etya) - having come; वै (vai) - indeed; परिवार्य (parivārya) - surrounding; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; कुरूद्वह (kurūdvaha) - O descendant of Kuru;]
(They indeed, O great king, having come to the dream vision, surrounding me, said these words: 'Listen to that, O descendant of Kuru.')
O great king, they indeed came to me in a dream vision, surrounded me, and said: 'Listen to these words, O descendant of Kuru.'
उत्तिष्ठ मा भैर्गाङ्गेय भयं ते नास्ति किञ्चन। रक्षामहे नरव्याघ्र स्वशरीरं हि नो भवान् ॥५-१८४-९॥
uttiṣṭha mā bhairgāṅgeya bhayaṃ te nāsti kiñcana। rakṣāmahe naravyāghra svaśarīraṃ hi no bhavān ॥5-184-9॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; मा (mā) - do not; भैः (bhaiḥ) - fear; गाङ्गेय (gāṅgeya) - son of Ganga; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; रक्षामहे (rakṣāmahe) - we protect; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; स्वशरीरम् (svaśarīram) - own body; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; भवान् (bhavān) - you are;]
(Arise, do not fear, son of Ganga, there is no fear for you at all. We protect, O tiger among men, indeed our own body is you.)
Arise, do not be afraid, O son of Ganga, there is nothing to fear for you. We will protect you, O tiger among men, as you are indeed our own self.
न त्वां रामो रणे जेता जामदग्न्यः कथञ्चन। त्वमेव समरे रामं विजेता भरतर्षभ ॥५-१८४-१०॥
na tvāṃ rāmo raṇe jetā jāmadagnyaḥ kathaṃcana। tvameva samare rāmaṃ vijetā bharatarṣabha ॥5-184-10॥
[न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जेता (jetā) - conqueror; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagnya; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; समरे (samare) - in battle; रामम् (rāmam) - Rama; विजेता (vijetā) - conqueror; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Not in any way is Rama, the son of Jamadagni, a conqueror of you in battle. Indeed, you are the conqueror of Rama in battle, O best of the Bharatas.)
Rama, the son of Jamadagni, cannot conquer you in battle in any way. Indeed, you are the one who conquers Rama in battle, O best of the Bharatas.
इदमस्त्रं सुदयितं प्रत्यभिज्ञास्यते भवान्। विदितं हि तवाप्येतत्पूर्वस्मिन्देहधारणे ॥५-१८४-११॥
idamastraṃ sudayitaṃ pratyabhijñāsyate bhavān। viditaṃ hi tavāpyetatpūrvasmindehadhāraṇe ॥5-184-11॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अस्त्रं (astraṃ) - weapon; सुदयितं (sudayitaṃ) - beloved; प्रत्यभिज्ञास्यते (pratyabhijñāsyate) - will be recognized; भवान् (bhavān) - you; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; अपि (api) - also; एतत् (etat) - this; पूर्वस्मिन् (pūrvasmin) - in previous; देहधारणे (dehadhāraṇe) - embodiment;]
(This beloved weapon will be recognized by you. Indeed, this is known to you also from the previous embodiment.)
This beloved weapon will be recognized by you. Indeed, you are also aware of this from your previous life.
प्राजापत्यं विश्वकृतं प्रस्वापं नाम भारत। न हीदं वेद रामोऽपि पृथिव्यां वा पुमान्क्वचित् ॥५-१८४-१२॥
prājāpatyaṃ viśvakṛtaṃ prasvāpaṃ nāma bhārata। na hīdaṃ veda rāmo'pi pṛthivyāṃ vā pumānkvacit ॥5-184-12॥
[प्राजापत्यं (prājāpatyaṃ) - of Prajapati; विश्वकृतं (viśvakṛtaṃ) - created by the universe; प्रस्वापं (prasvāpaṃ) - sleep; नाम (nāma) - named; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वेद (veda) - knows; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; अपि (api) - even; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; वा (vā) - or; पुमान् (pumān) - man; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(O Bharata, this sleep named Prajapatya, created by the universe, is not known by Rama or any man on earth anywhere.)
O Bharata, neither Rama nor any man on earth knows about this universal sleep named Prajapatya.
तत्स्मरस्व महाबाहो भृशं संयोजयस्व च। न च रामः क्षयं गन्ता तेनास्त्रेण नराधिप ॥५-१८४-१३॥
tatsmarasva mahābāho bhṛśaṃ saṃyojayasva ca। na ca rāmaḥ kṣayaṃ gantā tenāstreṇa narādhipa ॥5-184-13॥
[तत् (tat) - that; स्मरस्व (smarasva) - remember; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; संयोजयस्व (saṃyojayasva) - join; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; गन्ता (gantā) - will go; तेन (tena) - by that; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - weapon; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Remember that, O mighty-armed, and join intensely. And Rama will not go to destruction by that weapon, O lord of men.)
O mighty-armed one, remember that and join intensely. Rama will not be destroyed by that weapon, O king.
एनसा च न योगं त्वं प्राप्स्यसे जातु मानद। स्वप्स्यते जामदग्न्योऽसौ त्वद्बाणबलपीडितः ॥५-१८४-१४॥
enasā ca na yogaṃ tvaṃ prāpsyase jātu mānada। svapsyate jāmadagnyo'sau tvadbāṇabalapīḍitaḥ ॥5-184-14॥
[एनसा (enasā) - by this; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; योगं (yogaṃ) - union; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyase) - will obtain; जातु (jātu) - ever; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor; स्वप्स्यते (svapsyate) - will sleep; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagni's descendant; असौ (asau) - he; त्वद्बाणबलपीडितः (tvadbāṇabalapīḍitaḥ) - oppressed by the strength of your arrow;]
(By this, you will not ever obtain union, O giver of honor. Jamadagni's descendant, oppressed by the strength of your arrow, will sleep.)
By this action, you will never achieve union, O honorable one. Jamadagni's descendant, struck by the power of your arrow, will fall into slumber.
ततो जित्वा त्वमेवैनं पुनरुत्थापयिष्यसि। अस्त्रेण दयितेनाजौ भीष्म सम्बोधनेन वै ॥५-१८४-१५॥
tato jitvā tvamevainaṃ punarutthāpayiṣyasi। astreṇa dayitenājau bhīṣma sambodhanena vai ॥5-184-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उत्थापयिष्यसि (utthāpayiṣyasi) - will raise; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - with weapon; दयितेन (dayitena) - beloved; अजौ (ajau) - in battle; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; सम्बोधनेन (sambodhanena) - by addressing; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Then, having conquered, you will indeed raise him again with the beloved weapon in battle by addressing Bhishma.)

एवं कुरुष्व कौरव्य प्रभाते रथमास्थितः। प्रसुप्तं वा मृतं वापि तुल्यं मन्यामहे वयम् ॥५-१८४-१६॥
evaṃ kuruṣva kauravya prabhāte rathamāsthitaḥ। prasuptaṃ vā mṛtaṃ vāpi tulyaṃ manyāmahe vayam ॥5-184-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; प्रभाते (prabhāte) - at dawn; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - mounted; प्रसुप्तम् (prasuptam) - asleep; वा (vā) - or; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; मण्यामहे (manyāmahe) - we consider; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Thus, O descendant of Kuru, do mount the chariot at dawn. We consider asleep or dead to be equal.)
Therefore, O Kauravya, at dawn, mount the chariot. We regard being asleep or dead as the same.
न च रामेण मर्तव्यं कदाचिदपि पार्थिव। ततः समुत्पन्नमिदं प्रस्वापं युज्यतामिति ॥५-१८४-१७॥
na ca rāmeṇa martavyaṃ kadācidapi pārthivaḥ। tataḥ samutpannamidaṃ prasvāpaṃ yujyatāmiti ॥5-184-17॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rama; मर्तव्यं (martavyam) - to die; कदाचिदपि (kadācidapi) - at any time; पार्थिव (pārthivaḥ) - O king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; समुत्पन्नम् (samutpannam) - arisen; इदं (idam) - this; प्रस्वापं (prasvāpam) - sleep; युज्यताम् (yujyatām) - be applied; इति (iti) - thus;]
(And by Rama, O king, not to die at any time. Then this sleep arisen, be applied thus.)
O king, Rama should never die. Therefore, let this sleep that has arisen be applied.
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हिता राजन्सर्व एव द्विजोत्तमाः। अष्टौ सदृशरूपास्ते सर्वे भास्वरमूर्तयः ॥५-१८४-१८॥
ityuktvāntarhitā rājansarva eva dvijottamāḥ। aṣṭau sadṛśarūpāste sarve bhāsvaramūrtayaḥ ॥5-184-18॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्तर्हिता (antarhitā) - disappeared; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; द्विजोत्तमाः (dvijottamāḥ) - best of the twice-born; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; सदृश (sadṛśa) - similar; रूपाः (rūpāḥ) - forms; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भास्वर (bhāsvara) - shining; मूर्तयः (mūrtayaḥ) - figures;]
(Thus having spoken, O king, all the best of the twice-born disappeared. Eight similar forms, all shining figures, they were.)
Having said this, O king, all the best of the twice-born vanished. There appeared eight similar forms, all of them radiant figures.
