Pancharatra and Ext: Sthuna, the Yaksha exchanges his manliness with Shikandin. Later, Kubera's curse ensures it stays this way till the end. Bhishma concludes his narration of Shikandin story, giving justification as to why he will not kill Shikandin.

शिखण्डिवाक्यं श्रुत्वाथ स यक्षो भरतर्षभ। प्रोवाच मनसा चिन्त्य दैवेनोपनिपीडितः ॥ भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि मम दुःखाय कौरव ॥५-१९३-१॥
śikhaṇḍivākyaṃ śrutvātha sa yakṣo bharatarṣabha। provāca manasā cintya daivenopanipīḍitaḥ ॥ bhavitavyaṃ tathā taddhi mama duḥkhāya kaurava ॥5-193-1॥

(Having heard Shikhandi's words, then the Yaksha, O bull of the Bharatas, said in his mind, thinking, oppressed by fate: "It must happen thus indeed for my sorrow, O Kaurava.")
Upon hearing Shikhandi's words, the Yaksha, troubled by fate, thought to himself, "This must indeed happen for my sorrow, O Kaurava."
भद्रे कामं करिष्यामि समयं तु निबोध मे। किञ्चित्कालान्तरं दास्ये पुंलिङ्गं स्वमिदं तव ॥ आगन्तव्यं त्वया काले सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५-१९३-२॥
bhadre kāmaṃ kariṣyāmi samayaṃ tu nibodha me। kiñcitkālāntaraṃ dāsye puṃliṅgaṃ svamidaṃ tava ॥ āgantavyaṃ tvayā kāle satyametadbravīmi te ॥5-193-2॥

(O auspicious one, I will fulfill the desire, but know my time. After some time, I will give you your own masculine form. You must come in time. This is the truth I say to you.)

प्रभुः सङ्कल्पसिद्धोऽस्मि कामरूपी विहङ्गमः। मत्प्रसादात्पुरं चैव त्राहि बन्धूंश्च केवलान् ॥५-१९३-३॥

(The lord, I am wish-fulfilling, desire-form bird. By my grace, indeed, protect the city and only the relatives.)

स्त्रीलिङ्गं धारयिष्यामि त्वदीयं पार्थिवात्मजे। सत्यं मे प्रतिजानीहि करिष्यामि प्रियं तव ॥५-१९३-४॥

प्रतिदास्यामि भगवँल्लिङ्गं पुनरिदं तव। किञ्चित्कालान्तरं स्त्रीत्वं धारयस्व निशाचर ॥५-१९३-५॥
pratidāsyāmi bhagavaṁlliṅgaṁ punaridaṁ tava। kiñcitkālāntaraṁ strītvam dhārayasva niśācara ॥5-193-5॥

(I will return, O Lord, your form again; bear womanhood for some time, O night-wanderer.)
I will restore your form, O Lord, but for a little while, bear the form of a woman, O night-wanderer.
प्रतिप्रयाते दाशार्णे पार्थिवे हेमवर्मणि। कन्यैवाहं भविष्यामि पुरुषस्त्वं भविष्यसि ॥५-१९३-६॥
pratiprayāte dāśārṇe pārthive hemavarmaṇi। kanyāivāhaṃ bhaviṣyāmi puruṣastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi ॥5-193-6॥
[प्रतिप्रयाते (pratiprayāte) - when returned; दाशार्णे (dāśārṇe) - to the king of the Daśārṇas; पार्थिवे (pārthive) - king; हेमवर्मणि (hemavarmaṇi) - Hemavarman; कन्यैव (kanyāiva) - like a maiden; अहम् (aham) - I; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - will become; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become;]
(When the king Hemavarman of the Daśārṇas returns, I will become like a maiden, and you will become a man.)
When King Hemavarman of the Daśārṇas returns, I will transform into a maiden, and you will become a man.

इत्युक्त्वा समयं तत्र चक्राते तावुभौ नृप। अन्योन्यस्यानभिद्रोहे तौ सङ्क्रामयतां ततः ॥५-१९३-७॥
ityuktvā samayaṃ tatra cakrāte tāvubhau nṛpa। anyonyasyānabhidrohe tau saṅkrāmayatāṃ tataḥ ॥5-193-7॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; समयम् (samayam) - agreement; तत्र (tatra) - there; चक्राते (cakrāte) - made; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; नृप (nṛpa) - kings; अन्योन्यस्य (anyonyasya) - of each other; अनभिद्रोहे (anabhidrohe) - non-aggression; तौ (tau) - those two; सङ्क्रामयताम् (saṅkrāmayatām) - transferred; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Thus having spoken, those two kings made an agreement there for non-aggression towards each other, and then they transferred (the kingdom).)
After speaking thus, the two kings made an agreement there to not harm each other and then proceeded to transfer the kingdom.
स्त्रीलिङ्गं धारयामास स्थूणो यक्षो नराधिप। यक्षरूपं च तद्दीप्तं शिखण्डी प्रत्यपद्यत ॥५-१९३-८॥

(Sthuna, the Yaksha, assumed a female form, O king. And Shikhandi assumed that brilliant Yaksha form.)

ततः शिखण्डी पाञ्चाल्यः पुंस्त्वमासाद्य पार्थिव। विवेश नगरं हृष्टः पितरं च समासदत् ॥ यथावृत्तं तु तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ द्रुपदस्य च ॥५-१९३-९॥
tataḥ śikhaṇḍī pāñcālyaḥ puṃstvamāsādya pārthiva। viveśa nagaraṃ hṛṣṭaḥ pitaraṃ ca samāsadat ॥ yathāvṛttaṃ tu tatsarvamācakhyau drupadasya ca ॥5-193-9॥

(Then Shikhandi, the son of Panchala, having attained manhood, the prince entered the city joyfully and approached his father. But he told all that had happened to Drupada.)

द्रुपदस्तस्य तच्छ्रुत्वा हर्षमाहारयत्परम्। सभार्यस्तच्च सस्मार महेश्वरवचस्तदा ॥५-१९३-१०॥

[द्रुपदः (drupadaḥ) - Drupada; तस्य (tasya) - his; तच्छ्रुत्वा (tacchrutvā) - having heard that; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - brought; परम् (param) - great; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with his wife; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; महेश्वर (maheśvara) - of Lord Shiva; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Drupada, having heard that, brought great joy. With his wife, he then remembered the words of Lord Shiva.)
Upon hearing the news, Drupada was filled with immense joy. Accompanied by his wife, he recalled the words of Lord Shiva at that moment.
ततः सम्प्रेषयामास दशार्णाधिपतेर्नृप। पुरुषोऽयं मम सुतः श्रद्धत्तां मे भवानिति ॥५-१९३-११॥
tataḥ saṃpreṣayāmāsa daśārṇādhipaternṛpa। puruṣo'yaṃ mama sutaḥ śraddhattāṃ me bhavāniti ॥5-193-11॥

(Then the king of Daśārṇa sent (a message): "This man is my son; believe me, you.")

अथ दाशार्णको राजा सहसाभ्यागमत्तदा। पाञ्चालराजं द्रुपदं दुःखामर्षसमन्वितः ॥५-१९३-१२॥
atha dāśārṇako rājā sahasābhyāgamat tadā। pāñcālarājaṃ drupadaṃ duḥkhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ ॥5-193-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दाशार्णकः (dāśārṇakaḥ) - the king of the Daśārṇas; राजा (rājā) - king; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; अभ्यागमत् (abhyāgamat) - approached; तदा (tadā) - then; पाञ्चालराजम् (pāñcālarājam) - the king of the Pāñcālas; द्रुपदम् (drupadam) - Drupada; दुःख (duḥkha) - grief; अमर्ष (amarṣa) - anger; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - filled with;]
(Then the king of the Daśārṇas suddenly approached the king of the Pāñcālas, Drupada, filled with grief and anger.)
At that time, the king of the Daśārṇas suddenly came to King Drupada of the Pāñcālas, overwhelmed with grief and anger.
ततः काम्पिल्यमासाद्य दशार्णाधिपतिस्तदा। प्रेषयामास सत्कृत्य दूतं ब्रह्मविदां वरम् ॥५-१९३-१३॥
tataḥ kāmpilyam āsādya daśārṇādhipatis tadā। preṣayām āsa satkṛtya dūtaṃ brahmavidāṃ varam ॥5-193-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; काम्पिल्यम् (kāmpilyam) - Kampilya; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having arrived; दशार्णाधिपतिः (daśārṇādhipatiḥ) - the lord of the Daśārṇas; तदा (tadā) - at that time; प्रेषयामास (preṣayām āsa) - sent; सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - honoring; दूतम् (dūtam) - a messenger; ब्रह्मविदाम् (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(Then, having arrived at Kampilya, the lord of the Daśārṇas, at that time, sent a messenger, honoring him, the best of the knowers of Brahman.)
Then, upon reaching Kampilya, the lord of the Daśārṇas sent a highly respected messenger, who was the best among the knowers of Brahman.
ब्रूहि मद्वचनाद्दूत पाञ्चाल्यं तं नृपाधमम्। यद्वै कन्यां स्वकन्यार्थे वृतवानसि दुर्मते ॥ फलं तस्यावलेपस्य द्रक्ष्यस्यद्य न संशयः ॥५-१९३-१४॥
brūhi madvacanāddūta pāñcālyaṃ taṃ nṛpādhamam। yadvai kanyāṃ svakanyārthe vṛtavānasi durmate ॥ phalaṃ tasyāvale pasya drakṣyasyadya na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-193-14॥
[ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; मद्वचनात् (madvacanāt) - from my words; दूत (dūta) - messenger; पाञ्चाल्यम् (pāñcālyam) - to the son of Panchala; तम् (tam) - that; नृपाधमम् (nṛpādhamam) - worst of kings; यत् (yat) - that; वै (vai) - indeed; कन्याम् (kanyām) - girl; स्वकन्यार्थे (svakanyārthe) - for your own daughter; वृतवानसि (vṛtavānasi) - you have chosen; दुर्मते (durmate) - wicked-minded; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; अवलेपस्य (avale pasya) - of arrogance; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Speak from my words, messenger, to the son of Panchala, that worst of kings: "Indeed, you have chosen the girl for your own daughter, wicked-minded one. Today, you will see the fruit of that arrogance, no doubt.")
The messenger is instructed to tell the son of Panchala, considered the worst of kings, that his arrogant decision to choose the girl for his own daughter will have consequences, which he will witness today without any doubt.
एवमुक्तस्तु तेनासौ ब्राह्मणो राजसत्तम। दूतः प्रयातो नगरं दाशार्णनृपचोदितः ॥५-१९३-१५॥
evamuktastu tenāsau brāhmaṇo rājasattama। dūtaḥ prayāto nagaraṃ dāśārṇanṛpacoditaḥ ॥5-193-15॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; तु (tu) - but; तेन (tena) - by him; असौ (asau) - that; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; राजसत्तम (rājasattama) - O best of kings; दूतः (dūtaḥ) - messenger; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; नगरम् (nagaram) - to the city; दाशार्ण (dāśārṇa) - of the Daasharna; नृप (nṛpa) - king; चोदितः (coditaḥ) - sent;]
(Thus spoken by him, that Brahmin, O best of kings, the messenger departed to the city, sent by the king of the Daasharna.)
Upon being addressed in this manner by him, the Brahmin, O esteemed king, the messenger set out for the city, as instructed by the king of the Daasharna.
तत आसादयामास पुरोधा द्रुपदं पुरे। तस्मै पाञ्चालको राजा गामर्घ्यं च सुसत्कृतम् ॥ प्रापयामास राजेन्द्र सह तेन शिखण्डिना ॥५-१९३-१६॥
tata āsādayāmāsa purodhā drupadaṃ pure। tasmai pāñcālako rājā gām-arghyaṃ ca susatkṛtam ॥ prāpayāmāsa rājendra saha tena śikhaṇḍinā ॥5-193-16॥

(Then the priest approached Drupada in the city. To him, the Panchala king sent a cow and offerings, well-honored, O king, with Shikhandi.)

(He did not welcome that worship and indeed said these words: "What was spoken by that hero, King Kanchanavarma.")

यत्तेऽहमधमाचार दुहित्रर्थेऽस्मि वञ्चितः। तस्य पापस्य करणात्फलं प्राप्नुहि दुर्मते ॥५-१९३-१८॥
yatte'hamadhamaācāra duhitrarthe'smi vañcitaḥ। tasya pāpasya karaṇātphalaṃ prāpnuhi durmate ॥5-193-18॥

(Because of your wicked conduct, I have been deceived for the sake of your daughter. Receive the fruit of that sinful act, O wicked-minded one.)

(Give battle, O king, today in the forefront of battle; I will immediately lift your ministers, sons, and relatives.)

svalaṅkṛtamidaṃ veśma sthūṇasyāmitavikramāḥ। nopasarpati māṃ cāpi kasmādadya sumandadhīḥ ॥5-193-34॥

अप्रवृत्तं सुदुर्बुद्धे यस्मादेतत्कृतं त्वया। तस्मादद्य प्रभृत्येव त्वं स्त्री स पुरुषस्तथा ॥५-१९३-४३॥

(If Bhishma would kill a woman, he would indeed kill himself also. Therefore, having seen him standing in battle, I will not kill him.)

(Having heard this, King Duryodhana of the Kauravas, then, as if for a moment, having thought, considered it appropriate in Bhishma.)
Upon hearing this, King Duryodhana of the Kauravas paused for a moment and thought it was appropriate to rely on Bhishma.
