प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पुनरेव सुतस्तव। मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पितामहमपृच्छत ॥५-१९४-१॥
prabhātāyāṃ tu śarvaryāṃ punareva sutastava। madhye sarvasya sainyasya pitāmahamapṛcchat ॥5-194-1॥

(In the morning, but at night again indeed your son asked the grandfather in the midst of all the army.)

पाण्डवेयस्य गाङ्गेय यदेतत्सैन्यमुत्तमम्। प्रभूतनरनागाश्वं महारथसमाकुलम् ॥५-१९४-२॥

अप्रधृष्यमनावार्यमुद्वृत्तमिव सागरम्। सेनासागरमक्षोभ्यमपि देवैर्महाहवे ॥५-१९४-४॥

केन कालेन गाङ्गेय क्षपयेथा महाद्युते। आचार्यो वा महेष्वासः कृपो वा सुमहाबलः ॥५-१९४-५॥

कर्णो वा समरश्लाघी द्रौणिर्वा द्विजसत्तमः। दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः सर्वे भवन्तो हि बले मम ॥५-१९४-६॥
karṇo vā samaraślāghī drauṇirvā dvijasattamaḥ। divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve bhavanto hi bale mama ॥5-194-6॥

etadicchāmyahaṃ jñātuṃ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me। hṛdi nityaṃ mahābāho vaktumarhasi tanmama ॥5-194-7॥

O mighty-armed one, I have a great curiosity to know this. It is always in my heart, and you should tell me about it.

अनुरूपं कुरुश्रेष्ठ त्वय्येतत्पृथिवीपते। बलाबलममित्राणां स्वेषां च यदि पृच्छसि ॥५-१९४-८॥
anurūpaṃ kuruśreṣṭha tvayyetatpṛthivīpate। balābalamamitrāṇāṃ sveṣāṃ ca yadi pṛcchasi ॥5-194-8॥
[अनुरूपम् (anurūpam) - appropriate; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; एतत् (etat) - this; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; बलाबलम् (balābalam) - strength and weakness; अमित्राणाम् (amitrāṇām) - of enemies; स्वेषाम् (sveṣām) - of your own; च (ca) - and; यदि (yadi) - if; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask;]
(O best of the Kurus, if you ask about the strength and weakness of your own and of the enemies, this is appropriate in you, O lord of the earth.)
O esteemed leader of the Kurus, it is fitting for you, O ruler of the earth, to inquire about the strengths and weaknesses of both your own forces and those of the adversaries.
शृणु राजन्मम रणे या शक्तिः परमा भवेत्। अस्त्रवीर्यं रणे यच्च भुजयोश्च महाभुज ॥५-१९४-९॥
śṛṇu rājanmama raṇe yā śaktiḥ paramā bhavet। astravīryaṃ raṇe yacca bhujayośca mahābhuja ॥5-194-9॥

आर्जवेनैव युद्धेन योद्धव्य इतरो जनः। मायायुद्धेन मायावी इत्येतद्धर्मनिश्चयः ॥५-१९४-१०॥
ārjavenaiva yuddhena yoddhavya itaro janaḥ। māyāyuddhena māyāvī ityetaddharmaniścayaḥ ॥5-194-10॥
[आर्जवेनैव (ārjavenaiva) - with straightforwardness; युद्धेन (yuddhena) - with battle; योद्धव्य (yoddhavya) - must fight; इतरो (itaro) - other; जनः (janaḥ) - person; मायायुद्धेन (māyāyuddhena) - with deceitful battle; मायावी (māyāvī) - deceitful; इत्येतद्धर्मनिश्चयः (ityetaddharmaniścayaḥ) - thus is the determination of duty;]
(With straightforwardness, one must fight with battle; the other person with deceitful battle, deceitful; thus is the determination of duty.)
A straightforward person must engage in battle with honesty, while a deceitful person uses deceitful means. This is the determination of duty.
हन्यामहं महाबाहो पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्। दिवसे दिवसे कृत्वा भागं प्रागाह्निकं मम ॥५-१९४-११॥
hanyāmahaṃ mahābāho pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm। divase divase kṛtvā bhāgaṃ prāgāhnikaṃ mama ॥5-194-11॥
[हन्याम (hanyām) - I would slay; अहम् (aham) - I; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अनीकिनीम् (anīkinīm) - army; दिवसे (divase) - day by day; दिवसे (divase) - day by day; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; भागम् (bhāgam) - share; प्रागाह्निकम् (prāgāhnikam) - morning; मम (mama) - my;]
(I would slay, O mighty-armed one, the army of the Pandavas day by day, having done my morning share.)
O mighty-armed one, I would destroy the army of the Pandavas day by day, fulfilling my morning duties.
योधानां दशसाहस्रं कृत्वा भागं महाद्युते। सहस्रं रथिनामेकमेष भागो मतो मम ॥५-१९४-१२॥
yodhānāṃ daśasāhasraṃ kṛtvā bhāgaṃ mahādyute। sahasraṃ rathināmekameṣa bhāgo mato mama ॥5-194-12॥
[योधानां (yodhānāṃ) - of warriors; दशसाहस्रं (daśasāhasraṃ) - ten thousand; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; भागं (bhāgaṃ) - a share; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O great one; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; रथिनाम् (rathinām) - of charioteers; एकम् (ekam) - one; एष (eṣa) - this; भागः (bhāgaḥ) - share; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; मम (mama) - by me;]
(Having made a share of ten thousand warriors, O great one, a share of one thousand charioteers is considered by me.)
O great one, I consider the share of ten thousand warriors equivalent to the share of one thousand charioteers.
अनेनाहं विधानेन संनद्धः सततोत्थितः। क्षपयेयं महत्सैन्यं कालेनानेन भारत ॥५-१९४-१३॥
anenāhaṃ vidhānena saṃnaddhaḥ satatotthitaḥ। kṣapayeyam mahatsainyaṃ kālenānena bhārata ॥5-194-13॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; अहम् (aham) - I; विधानेन (vidhānena) - by the method; संनद्धः (saṃnaddhaḥ) - prepared; सतत-उत्थितः (satata-utthitaḥ) - constantly arisen; क्षपयेयम् (kṣapayeyam) - I may destroy; महत्-सैन्यम् (mahat-sainyam) - great army; कालेन (kālena) - in time; अनेन (anena) - by this; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(By this method, I, prepared and constantly arisen, may destroy the great army in time, O Bharata.)
With this strategy, I am ever-ready and vigilant, and I shall be able to destroy the mighty army in due course, O Bharata.
यदि त्वस्त्राणि मुञ्चेयं महान्ति समरे स्थितः। शतसाहस्रघातीनि हन्यां मासेन भारत ॥५-१९४-१४॥
yadi tvastrāṇi muñceyaṃ mahānti samare sthitaḥ। śatasāhasraghātīni hanyāṃ māsena bhārata ॥5-194-14॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्व (tva) - you; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; मुञ्चेयं (muñceyaṃ) - release; महान्ति (mahānti) - great; समरे (samare) - in battle; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; शतसाहस्रघातीनि (śatasāhasraghātīni) - hundreds of thousands slaying; हन्यां (hanyāṃ) - I would kill; मासेन (māsena) - in a month; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(If you release great weapons standing in battle, I would kill hundreds of thousands in a month, O Bharata.)
If you, O Bharata, were to release your great weapons while standing in battle, I could slay hundreds of thousands within a month.

śrutvā bhīṣmasya tadvākyaṃ rājā duryodhanastadā। paryapṛcchata rājendra droṇamaṅgirasāṃ varam ॥5-194-15॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; तद्वाक्यं (tadvākyaṃ) - those words; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; पर्यपृच्छत (paryapṛcchata) - inquired; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; अङ्गिरसां (aṅgirasāṃ) - of the Angirasa lineage; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(Having heard those words of Bhishma, King Duryodhana then inquired, O king, about Drona, the best of the Angirasa lineage.)
Upon hearing Bhishma's words, King Duryodhana then asked King Drona, the best among the Angirasa lineage, for guidance.
आचार्य केन कालेन पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकान्। निहन्या इति तं द्रोणः प्रत्युवाच हसन्निव ॥५-१९४-१६॥
ācārya kena kālena pāṇḍuputrasya sainikān। nihanyā iti taṃ droṇaḥ pratyuvāca hasanniva ॥5-194-16॥
[आचार्य (ācārya) - teacher; केन (kena) - by whom; कालेन (kālena) - by time; पाण्डुपुत्रस्य (pāṇḍuputrasya) - of the son of Pandu; सैनिकान् (sainikān) - soldiers; निहन्या (nihanyā) - would be killed; इति (iti) - thus; तं (taṃ) - him; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Drona; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; हसन्निव (hasanniva) - as if smiling;]
(Teacher, by whom and by what time would the soldiers of the son of Pandu be killed? Thus, Drona replied to him as if smiling.)
The teacher, Drona, replied with a smile, "By whom and when will the soldiers of the Pandu's son be killed?"
स्थविरोऽस्मि कुरुश्रेष्ठ मन्दप्राणविचेष्टितः। अस्त्राग्निना निर्दहेयं पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥५-१९४-१७॥
sthaviro'smi kuruśreṣṭha mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ। astrāgninā nirdaheyaṃ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm ॥5-194-17॥
[स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - old; अस्मि (asmi) - am; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; मन्द (manda) - slow; प्राण (prāṇa) - breath; विचेष्टितः (viceṣṭitaḥ) - movement; अस्त्र (astra) - weapon; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; निर्दहेयम् (nirdaheyaṃ) - I would burn; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अनीकिनीम् (anīkinīm) - army;]
(I am old, O best of the Kurus, with slow breath and movement. I would burn the army of the Pandavas with the weapon of fire.)
I am aged and slow, O best of the Kurus, but I would still burn the Pandavas' army with my fiery weapon.
यथा भीष्मः शान्तनवो मासेनेति मतिर्मम। एषा मे परमा शक्तिरेतन्मे परमं बलम् ॥५-१९४-१८॥
yathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo māsaneti matirmama। eṣā me paramā śaktiretanme paramaṃ balam ॥5-194-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Shantanu; मासेन (māsena) - in a month; इति (iti) - thus; मतिः (matiḥ) - thought; मम (mama) - my; एषा (eṣā) - this; मे (me) - my; परमा (paramā) - supreme; शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - power; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(As Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, in a month, thus is my thought. This is my supreme power, this is my supreme strength.)
Just as Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, achieved his goals in a month, this is my firm belief. This is my greatest power and my ultimate strength.
द्वाभ्यामेव तु मासाभ्यां कृपः शारद्वतोऽब्रवीत्। द्रौणिस्तु दशरात्रेण प्रतिजज्ञे बलक्षयम् ॥ कर्णस्तु पञ्चरात्रेण प्रतिजज्ञे महास्त्रवित् ॥५-१९४-१९॥
dvābhyāmeva tu māsābhyāṁ kṛpaḥ śāradvato'bravīt। drauṇistu daśarātreṇa pratijajñe balakṣayam ॥ karṇastu pañcarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit ॥5-194-19॥
[द्वाभ्याम् (dvābhyām) - by two; एव (eva) - only; तु (tu) - but; मासाभ्याम् (māsābhyām) - by months; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; शारद्वतः (śāradvataḥ) - Śāradvata; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Droṇa's son; तु (tu) - but; दशरात्रेण (daśarātreṇa) - in ten nights; प्रतिजज्ञे (pratijajñe) - promised; बलक्षयम् (balakṣayam) - destruction of forces; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; तु (tu) - but; पञ्चरात्रेण (pañcarātreṇa) - in five nights; प्रतिजज्ञे (pratijajñe) - promised; महास्त्रवित् (mahāstravit) - great wielder of weapons;]
(By two months, Kṛpa, the son of Śāradvata, said. Droṇa's son promised the destruction of forces in ten nights. Karṇa, the great wielder of weapons, promised in five nights.)
Kṛpa, the son of Śāradvata, declared that it would take two months. However, Droṇa's son promised to destroy the forces in ten nights, while Karṇa, known for his great skill with weapons, promised to do it in five nights.
तच्छ्रुत्वा सूतपुत्रस्य वाक्यं सागरगासुतः। जहास सस्वनं हासं वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥५-१९४-२०॥
tacchrutvā sūtaputrasya vākyaṃ sāgaragāsutaḥ। jahāsa sasvanaṃ hāsaṃ vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha ॥5-194-20॥

(Having heard the words of the charioteer's son, the ocean-going son laughed aloud and indeed spoke these words.)
Upon hearing the words of the charioteer's son, the son of the ocean laughed loudly and then spoke these words.
न हि तावद्रणे पार्थं बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम्। वासुदेवसमायुक्तं रथेनोद्यन्तमच्युतम् ॥५-१९४-२१॥
na hi tāvadraṇe pārthaṃ bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam। vāsudevasamāyuktaṃ rathenodyantamacyutam ॥5-194-21॥

In battle, Arjuna, equipped with arrows, sword, and bow, accompanied by Vasudeva, rises on his chariot as the infallible one.
समागच्छसि राधेय तेनैवमभिमन्यसे। शक्यमेवं च भूयश्च त्वया वक्तुं यथेष्टतः ॥५-१९४-२२॥
