vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaishampayana spoke:
etacchrutvā tu kaunteyaḥ sarvān bhrātṝn upahvare। āhūya bharataśreṣṭha idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥5-195-1॥
Upon hearing this, Arjuna, the son of Kunti, gathered all his brothers nearby and addressed them, saying these words, O esteemed descendant of Bharata.
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu ye cārapuruṣā mama। te pravṛttiṃ prayacchanti mamemāṃ vyuṣitāṃ niśām ॥5-195-2॥
The spies within Dhritarashtra's armies, who are loyal to me, have provided information about the events of the past night.
duryodhanaḥ kilāpṛcchadāpgeyaṃ mahāvratam। kena kālena pāṇḍūnāṃ hanyāḥ sainyamiti prabho ॥5-195-3॥
Duryodhana asked Bhishma, 'O lord, when will the Pandavas' army be destroyed?'
māseneti ca tenokto dhārtarāṣṭraḥ sudurmatiḥ। tāvatā cāpi kālena droṇo'pi pratyajānata ॥5-195-4॥
In a month, Dhritarashtra's evil-minded son was told this by him, and by that time, Drona also understood.
gautamo dviguṇaṃ kālamuktavāniti naḥ śrutam। drauṇistu daśarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit ॥5-195-5॥
We have heard that Gautama mentioned double the time. However, Drona's son, the great wielder of weapons, promised to accomplish it in ten nights.
tathā divyāstravitkarṇaḥ sampṛṣṭaḥ kurusaṁsadi। pañcabhirdivasairhantuṁ sa sainyaṁ pratijajñivān ॥5-195-6॥
Thus, Karna, known for his mastery of divine weapons, assured in the Kuru assembly that he would destroy the army within five days.
tasmādahamapīcchāmi śrotumarjuna te vacaḥ। kālena kiyata śatrūnkṣapayeriti saṃyuge ॥5-195-7॥
Therefore, Arjuna, I wish to hear your words on how long it will take to destroy the enemies in battle.
evamukto guḍākeśaḥ pārthivena dhanañjayaḥ। vāsudevamavekṣyedaṃ vacanaṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥5-195-8॥
Thus addressed by the prince, Dhanañjaya looked at Vāsudeva and replied with these words.
sarva ete mahātmānaḥ kṛtāstrāś citrayodhinaḥ। asaṃśayaṃ mahārāja hanyur eva balaṃ tava ॥5-195-9॥
O great king, there is no doubt that all these great souls, who are skilled in weapons and are wonderful warriors, would certainly destroy your army.
apaitu te manastāpo yathāsatyaṃ bravīmyaham। hanyāmekarathenāhaṃ vāsudevasahāyavān ॥5-195-10॥
Let your mental anguish go; I truly say, with Vasudeva as my ally, I would slay them with a single chariot.
sāmarān api lokāṁs trīn saha sthāvara-jaṅgamān। bhūtaṁ bhavyaṁ bhaviṣyaś ca nimeṣād iti me matiḥ ॥5-195-11॥
My belief is that in a moment, with the gods, all three worlds, both movable and immovable, past, present, and future, can be perceived.
yattadghoraṃ paśupatiḥ prādādastraṃ mahanmama। kairāte dvandvayuddhe vai tadidaṃ mayi vartate ॥5-195-12॥
The terrible weapon that Lord Shiva bestowed upon me during the duel indeed resides within me.
yadyugānte paśupatiḥ sarvabhūtāni saṁharan। prayuṅkte puruṣavyāghra tadidaṁ mayi vartate ॥5-195-13॥
O tiger among men, when the lord of creatures destroys all beings at the end of the age, that power resides in me.
tanna jānāti gāṅgeyo na droṇo na ca gautamaḥ। na ca droṇasuto rājankuta eva tu sūtajaḥ ॥5-195-14॥
Neither Bhishma, the son of Ganga, nor Drona, nor Kripa knows this, O king. How then can Karna, the son of a charioteer, know it?
na tu yuktaṃ raṇe hantuṃ divyairastraiḥ pṛthagjanam। ārjavenaiva yuddhena vijeṣyāmo vayaṃ parān ॥5-195-15॥
However, it is not appropriate to use divine weapons to kill ordinary people in battle. We shall overcome our enemies through straightforwardness and fair combat.
tatheme puruṣavyāghrāḥ sahāyāstava pārthiva। sarve divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve yuddhābhinandinaḥ ॥5-195-16॥
Thus, these valiant warriors are your allies, O king. They are all skilled in divine weaponry and eager for battle.
vedāntāvabhṛthasnātāḥ sarva ete'parājitāḥ। nihanyuḥ samare senāṃ devānāmapi pāṇḍava ॥5-195-17॥
The Pāṇḍavas, having completed the Vedic rituals and being undefeated, could defeat even the army of the gods in battle.
śikhaṇḍī yuyudhānaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ। bhīmaseno yamau cobhau yudhāmanyuttamaujasau ॥5-195-18॥
Shikhandi, Yuyudhana, Dhrishtadyumna, the son of Prishata, Bhimasena, and the twins Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas were present.
virāṭadrupadau cobhau bhīṣmadroṇasamau yudhi। svayaṃ cāpi samartho'si trailokyotsādane api ॥5-195-19॥
Virata and Drupada are both equal to Bhishma and Drona in battle. You yourself are also capable of destroying the three worlds.
krodhādyaṃ puruṣaṃ paśyestvaṃ vāsavasamadyute। kṣipraṃ na sa bhavedvyaktamiti tvāṃ vedmi kaurava ॥5-195-20॥
O Kaurava, I know that the man you see, who is equal in splendor to Indra, will not quickly become manifest due to anger.
