वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaishampayana said:
अथ गावल्गणिर्धीमान्समरादेत्य सञ्जयः। प्रत्यक्षदर्शी सर्वस्य भूतभव्यभविष्यवित् ॥६-१४-१॥
Then, the wise Gāvalgaṇi, having returned from the battle, Sañjaya, who is a direct witness to everything and knows the past, present, and future.
ध्यायते धृतराष्ट्राय सहसोपेत्य दुःखितः। आचष्ट निहतं भीष्मं भरतानाममध्यमम् ॥६-१४-२॥
Sorrowfully meditating, he suddenly approached Dhritarashtra and informed him of the death of Bhishma, the central figure among the Bharatas.
सञ्जयोऽहं महाराज नमस्ते भरतर्षभ। हतो भीष्मः शान्तनवो भरतानां पितामहः ॥६-१४-३॥
Sanjaya said: O great king, I offer my salutations to you, O best of the Bharatas. Bhishma, the son of Shantanu and the grandfather of the Bharatas, has been slain.
ककुदं सर्वयोधानां धाम सर्वधनुष्मताम्। शरतल्पगतः सोऽद्य शेते कुरुपितामहः ॥६-१४-४॥
Today, the grandsire of the Kurus, the chief among all warriors and the abode of all archers, lies on his bed of arrows.
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य द्यूतं पुत्रस्तवाकरोत्। स शेते निहतो राजन्सङ्ख्ये भीष्मः शिखण्डिना ॥६-१४-५॥
Relying on the strength of Bhishma, your son dared to gamble. Now, O king, Bhishma lies slain in battle by Shikhandi.
यः सर्वान्पृथिवीपालान्समवेतान्महामृधे। जिगायैकरथेनैव काशिपुर्यां महारथः ॥६-१४-६॥
The great warrior, who, with just a single chariot, conquered all the assembled earthly kings in the great battle at Kāśī city.
जामदग्न्यं रणे राममायोध्य वसुसम्भवः। न हतो जामदग्न्येन स हतोऽद्य शिखण्डिना ॥६-१४-७॥
In the battle, Jamadagnya (Parashurama) was not killed by Jamadagni's son, but today he was killed by Shikhandi.
महेन्द्रसदृशः शौर्ये स्थैर्ये च हिमवानिव। समुद्र इव गाम्भीर्ये सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः ॥६-१४-८॥
He is as valorous as Mahendra, as stable as Himavan, as deep as the ocean, and as patient as the earth.
शरदंष्ट्रो धनुर्वक्त्रः खड्गजिह्वो दुरासदः। नरसिंहः पिता तेऽद्य पाञ्चाल्येन निपातितः ॥६-१४-९॥
Today, your father Narasimha, who was formidable with his autumnal teeth, bow-shaped mouth, and sword-like tongue, was defeated by the Panchala.
पाण्डवानां महत्सैन्यं यं दृष्ट्वोद्यन्तमाहवे। प्रवेपत भयोद्विग्नं सिंहं दृष्ट्वेव गोगणः ॥६-१४-१०॥
Upon seeing the great army of the Pandavas rising in battle, the herd of cows trembled in fear as if they had seen a lion.
परिरक्ष्य स सेनां ते दशरात्रमनीकहा। जगामास्तमिवादित्यः कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥६-१४-११॥
After safeguarding your army for ten nights, the leader departed like the setting sun, having accomplished a very challenging task.
यः स शक्र इवाक्षोभ्यो वर्षन्बाणान्सहस्रशः। जघान युधि योधानामर्बुदं दशभिर्दिनैः ॥६-१४-१२॥
He, like the mighty Indra, unshakeable and fierce, showered thousands of arrows and slew a hundred million warriors in ten days of battle.
स शेते निष्टनन्भूमौ वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः। तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन्यथा नार्हः स भारत ॥६-१४-१३॥
He lies on the ground groaning like a tree broken by the wind, O king, because of your poor counsel, which he does not deserve, O descendant of Bharata.
