vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaishampayana said:
atha gāvalgaṇirdhīmānsamarādetya sañjayaḥ। pratyakṣadarśī sarvasya bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyavit ॥6-14-1॥
Then, the wise Gāvalgaṇi, having returned from the battle, Sañjaya, who is a direct witness to everything and knows the past, present, and future.
dhyāyate dhṛtarāṣṭrāya sahasopetya duḥkhitaḥ। ācaṣṭa nihataṃ bhīṣmaṃ bharatānāmamadhyamam ॥6-14-2॥
Sorrowfully meditating, he suddenly approached Dhritarashtra and informed him of the death of Bhishma, the central figure among the Bharatas.
sañjayo'haṁ mahārāja namaste bharatarṣabha। hato bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo bharatānāṁ pitāmahaḥ ॥6-14-3॥
Sanjaya said: O great king, I offer my salutations to you, O best of the Bharatas. Bhishma, the son of Shantanu and the grandfather of the Bharatas, has been slain.
kakudaṁ sarvayodhānāṁ dhāma sarvadhanuṣmatām। śaratalpagataḥ so'dya śete kurupitāmahaḥ ॥6-14-4॥
Today, the grandsire of the Kurus, the chief among all warriors and the abode of all archers, lies on his bed of arrows.
yasya vīryaṃ samāśritya dyūtaṃ putrastavākarot। sa śete nihato rājansaṅkhye bhīṣmaḥ śikhaṇḍinā ॥6-14-5॥
Relying on the strength of Bhishma, your son dared to gamble. Now, O king, Bhishma lies slain in battle by Shikhandi.
yaḥ sarvān pṛthivīpālān samavetān mahāmṛdhe। jigāyaikarathenaiva kāśipuryāṃ mahārathaḥ ॥6-14-6॥
The great warrior, who, with just a single chariot, conquered all the assembled earthly kings in the great battle at Kāśī city.
jāmadagnyaṃ raṇe rāma māyodhya vasusambhavaḥ। na hato jāmadagnyena sa hato'dya śikhaṇḍinā ॥6-14-7॥
In the battle, Jamadagnya (Parashurama) was not killed by Jamadagni's son, but today he was killed by Shikhandi.
mahendrasadṛśaḥ śaurye sthairye ca himavāniva। samudra iva gāmbhīrye sahiṣṇutve dharāsamaḥ ॥6-14-8॥
He is as valorous as Mahendra, as stable as Himavan, as deep as the ocean, and as patient as the earth.
śaradaṁṣṭro dhanurvaktraḥ khaḍgajihvo durāsadaḥ। narasiṁhaḥ pitā te'dya pāñcālyena nipātitaḥ ॥6-14-9॥
Today, your father Narasimha, who was formidable with his autumnal teeth, bow-shaped mouth, and sword-like tongue, was defeated by the Panchala.
pāṇḍavānāṃ mahatsainyaṃ yaṃ dṛṣṭvodyantamāhave। pravepata bhayodvignaṃ siṃhaṃ dṛṣṭveva gogaṇaḥ ॥6-14-10॥

parirakṣya sa senāṃ te daśarātramanīkaha। jagāmāstamivādityaḥ kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ॥6-14-11॥

yaḥ sa śakra ivākṣobhyo varṣanbāṇānsahasraśaḥ। jaghāna yudhi yodhānāmarbudaṃ daśabhirdinaiḥ ॥6-14-12॥
He, like the mighty Indra, unshakeable and fierce, showered thousands of arrows and slew a hundred million warriors in ten days of battle.
sa śete niṣṭananbhūmau vātarugṇa iva drumaḥ। tava durmantrite rājanyathā nārhaḥ sa bhārata ॥6-14-13॥
He lies on the ground groaning like a tree broken by the wind, O king, because of your poor counsel, which he does not deserve, O descendant of Bharata.
