सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
ततो मुहूर्तात्तुमुलः शब्दो हृदयकम्पनः। अश्रूयत महाराज योधानां प्रयुयुत्सताम् ॥६-१८-१॥
Then, after a moment, a tumultuous sound that shook the heart was heard, O great king, from the warriors eager for battle.
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्वारणानां च बृंहितैः। रथानां नेमिघोषैश्च दीर्यतीव वसुन्धरा ॥६-१८-२॥
The earth appears to be splitting apart with the loud sounds of conches, drums, trumpeting elephants, and the rumbling of chariot wheels.
हयानां हेषमाणानां योधानां तत्र गर्जताम्। क्षणेन खं दिशश्चैव शब्देनापूरितं तदा ॥६-१८-३॥
In that moment, the neighing of horses and the roaring of warriors echoed through the sky and all directions, filling them with sound.
पुत्राणां तव दुर्धर्ष पाण्डवानां तथैव च। समकम्पन्त सैन्यानि परस्परसमागमे ॥६-१८-४॥
The armies of your invincible sons and the Pandavas trembled as they faced each other in battle.
तत्र नागा रथाश्चैव जाम्बूनदविभूषिताः। भ्राजमाना व्यदृश्यन्त मेघा इव सविद्युतः ॥६-१८-५॥
There, the serpents and chariots, adorned with gold, appeared shining like clouds with lightning.
ध्वजा बहुविधाकारास्तावकानां नराधिप। काञ्चनाङ्गदिनो रेजुर्ज्वलिता इव पावकाः ॥६-१८-६॥
The flags of various shapes belonging to you, O king, adorned with golden bracelets, shone brightly like blazing fire.
स्वेषां चैव परेषां च समदृश्यन्त भारत। महेन्द्रकेतवः शुभ्रा महेन्द्रसदनेष्विव ॥६-१८-७॥
O Bharata, the banners of Indra, whether belonging to one's own or others, appeared equally white, as if in the abodes of Indra.
काञ्चनैः कवचैर्वीरा ज्वलनार्कसमप्रभैः। संनद्धाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त ग्रहाः प्रज्वलिता इव ॥६-१८-८॥
The heroes, adorned in golden armor and shining like the sun and fire, appeared as if they were burning planets.
उद्यतैरायुधैश्चित्रैस्तलबद्धाः पताकिनः। ऋषभाक्षा महेष्वासाश्चमूमुखगता बभुः ॥६-१८-९॥
The warriors, equipped with various weapons, shields, and flags, with eyes like bulls and skilled in archery, took their positions at the forefront of the army.
पृष्ठगोपास्तु भीष्मस्य पुत्रास्तव नराधिप। दुःशासनो दुर्विषहो दुर्मुखो दुःसहस्तथा ॥६-१८-१०॥
The protectors of the rear were Bhishma's sons, including your sons, O king, such as Duhshasana, Durvishaha, Durmukha, and Duhsaha.
विविंशतिश्चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च महारथः। सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवाः शलः ॥६-१८-११॥
Among the warriors are twenty, including Citrasena, Vikarna, and the great chariot-warrior; also present are Satyavrata, Purumitra, Jaya, Bhurishrava, and Shala.
रथा विंशतिसाहस्रास्तथैषामनुयायिनः। अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः ॥६-१८-१२॥
There are twenty thousand chariots, and among their followers are the Abhishahas, Shurasenas, Shibis, and Vasatis.
शाल्वा मत्स्यास्तथाम्बष्ठास्त्रिगर्ताः केकयास्तथा। सौवीराः कितवाः प्राच्याः प्रतीच्योदीच्यमालवाः ॥६-१८-१३॥
The Shalvas, Matsyas, Ambashthas, Trigartas, Kekayas, Sauvīras, Kitavas, Easterners, Westerners, and Northern Malavas were all present.
द्वादशैते जनपदाः सर्वे शूरास्तनुत्यजः। महता रथवंशेन तेऽभ्यरक्षन्पितामहम् ॥६-१८-१४॥
These twelve regions, filled with heroes and warriors, protected the grandfather with their great chariot lineage.
अनीकं दशसाहस्रं कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम्। मागधो येन नृपतिस्तद्रथानीकमन्वयात् ॥६-१८-१५॥
The Magadha king, with his chariot army, followed the army of ten thousand mighty elephants.
रथानां चक्ररक्षाश्च पादरक्षाश्च दन्तिनाम्। अभूवन्वाहिनीमध्ये शतानामयुतानि षट् ॥६-१८-१६॥
In the midst of the army, there were six hundred thousand wheel-guards for chariots and foot-guards for elephants.
पादाताश्चाग्रतोऽगच्छन्धनुश्चर्मासिपाणयः। अनेकशतसाहस्रा नखरप्रासयोधिनः ॥६-१८-१७॥
The foot-soldiers advanced in front, carrying bows, shields, and swords in their hands. There were many hundreds and thousands of warriors equipped with claws and javelins.
अक्षौहिण्यो दशैका च तव पुत्रस्य भारत। अदृश्यन्त महाराज गङ्गेव यमुनान्तरे ॥६-१८-१८॥
O Bharata, eleven divisions of your son's army were seen, O great king, like the Ganga between the Yamuna.
