sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
tato muhūrtāttumulaḥ śabdo hṛdayakampanaḥ। aśrūyata mahārāja yodhānāṃ prayuyutsatām ॥6-18-1॥
Then, after a moment, a tumultuous sound that shook the heart was heard, O great king, from the warriors eager for battle.
śaṅkhadundubhinirghoṣairvāraṇānāṃ ca bṛṃhitaiḥ। rathānāṃ nemighoṣaiśca dīryatīva vasundharā ॥6-18-2॥
The earth appears to be splitting apart with the loud sounds of conches, drums, trumpeting elephants, and the rumbling of chariot wheels.
hayānāṃ heṣamāṇānāṃ yodhānāṃ tatra garjatām। kṣaṇena khaṃ diśaścaiva śabdenāpūritaṃ tadā ॥6-18-3॥
In that moment, the neighing of horses and the roaring of warriors echoed through the sky and all directions, filling them with sound.
putrāṇāṃ tava durdharṣa pāṇḍavānāṃ tathaiva ca। samakampanta sainyāni parasparasamāgame ॥6-18-4॥
The armies of your invincible sons and the Pandavas trembled as they faced each other in battle.
tatra nāgā rathāścaiva jāmbūnadavibhūṣitāḥ। bhrājamānā vyadṛśyanta meghā iva savidyutaḥ ॥6-18-5॥
There, the serpents and chariots, adorned with gold, appeared shining like clouds with lightning.
dhvajā bahuvidhākārāstāvakānāṃ narādhipa। kāñcanāṅgadino rejurjvalitā iva pāvakāḥ ॥6-18-6॥
The flags of various shapes belonging to you, O king, adorned with golden bracelets, shone brightly like blazing fire.
sveṣāṃ caiva pareṣāṃ ca samadṛśyanta bhārata। mahendraketavaḥ śubhrā mahendrasadaneṣviva ॥6-18-7॥
O Bharata, the banners of Indra, whether belonging to one's own or others, appeared equally white, as if in the abodes of Indra.
kāñcanaiḥ kavacairvīrā jvalanārkasamaprabhaiḥ। saṃnaddhāḥ pratyadṛśyanta grahāḥ prajvalitā iva ॥6-18-8॥
The heroes, adorned in golden armor and shining like the sun and fire, appeared as if they were burning planets.
udyatairāyudhaścitraistalabaddhāḥ patākinaḥ। ṛṣabhākṣā maheṣvāsāścamoomukhagatā babhuḥ ॥6-18-9॥
The warriors, equipped with various weapons, shields, and flags, with eyes like bulls and skilled in archery, took their positions at the forefront of the army.
pṛṣṭhagopāstu bhīṣmasya putrāstava narādhipa। duḥśāsano durviṣaho durmukho duḥsahastathā ॥6-18-10॥
The protectors of the rear were Bhishma's sons, including your sons, O king, such as Duhshasana, Durvishaha, Durmukha, and Duhsaha.
viviṃśatiś citraseno vikarṇaś ca mahārathaḥ। satyavrataḥ purumitro jayo bhūriśravāḥ śalaḥ ॥6-18-11॥
Among the warriors are twenty, including Citrasena, Vikarna, and the great chariot-warrior; also present are Satyavrata, Purumitra, Jaya, Bhurishrava, and Shala.
rathā viṃśatisāhasrāstathaiṣāmanuyāyinaḥ। abhīṣāhāḥ śūrasenāḥ śibayo'tha vasātayaḥ ॥6-18-12॥
There are twenty thousand chariots, and among their followers are the Abhishahas, Shurasenas, Shibis, and Vasatis.
śālvā matsyās tathāmbaṣṭhās trigartāḥ kekayās tathā। sauvīrāḥ kitavāḥ prācyāḥ pratīcyodīcyamālavāḥ ॥6-18-13॥
The Shalvas, Matsyas, Ambashthas, Trigartas, Kekayas, Sauvīras, Kitavas, Easterners, Westerners, and Northern Malavas were all present.
dvādaśaite janapadāḥ sarve śūrāstanutyajaḥ। mahatā rathavaṃśena te'bhyarakṣanpitāmaham ॥6-18-14॥
These twelve regions, filled with heroes and warriors, protected the grandfather with their great chariot lineage.
anīkaṁ daśasāhasraṁ kuñjarāṇāṁ tarasvinām। māgadhō yēna nṛpatistadrathānīkamanvayāt ॥6-18-15॥
The Magadha king, with his chariot army, followed the army of ten thousand mighty elephants.
rathānāṃ cakrarakṣāśca pādarakṣāśca dantinām। abhūvanvāhinīmadhye śatānāmayutāni ṣaṭ ॥6-18-16॥
In the midst of the army, there were six hundred thousand wheel-guards for chariots and foot-guards for elephants.
pādātāś cāgrato'gacchan dhanuś carmāsipāṇayaḥ। anekaśatasāhasrā nakharaprāsayodhinaḥ ॥6-18-17॥
The foot-soldiers advanced in front, carrying bows, shields, and swords in their hands. There were many hundreds and thousands of warriors equipped with claws and javelins.
akṣauhiṇyo daśaikā ca tava putrasya bhārata। adṛśyanta mahārāja gaṅgeva yamunāntare ॥6-18-18॥
O Bharata, eleven divisions of your son's army were seen, O great king, like the Ganga between the Yamuna.
