Core and Pancharatra: Mahavyuha counter military formation by the Kauravas. The second day of war commences.
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
क्रौञ्चं ततो महाव्यूहमभेद्यं तनयस्तव। व्यूढं दृष्ट्वा महाघोरं पार्थेनामिततेजसा ॥६-४७-१॥
Then, your son, observing the formidable and impenetrable Krauncha formation set up by the immensely powerful Partha, was greatly alarmed.
आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य कृपं शल्यं च मारिष। सौमदत्तिं विकर्णं च अश्वत्थामानमेव च ॥६-४७-२॥
Approaching the teacher, Kṛpa, Śalya, Saumadatti, Vikarṇa, and Aśvatthāmā, O great one.
दुःशासनादीन्भ्रातॄंश्च स सर्वानेव भारत। अन्यांश्च सुबहूञ्शूरान्युद्धाय समुपागतान् ॥६-४७-३॥
O Bharata, Duhshasana and his brothers, along with many other heroes, have assembled for battle.
प्राहेदं वचनं काले हर्षयंस्तनयस्तव। नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे शस्त्रास्त्रवेदिनः ॥६-४७-४॥
Your son, in order to bring joy, spoke these words at the right moment: all are skilled in wielding various weapons and are knowledgeable about weapons and missiles.
एकैकशः समर्था हि यूयं सर्वे महारथाः। पाण्डुपुत्रान्रणे हन्तुं ससैन्यान्किमु संहताः ॥६-४७-५॥
Each of you is capable, as great warriors, to defeat the sons of Pandu in battle along with their armies, especially when united.
अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम्। पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं पार्थिवसत्तमाः ॥६-४७-६॥
Our forces, protected by Bhishma, are inadequate; but their forces are adequate, O best of the kings.
संस्थानाः शूरसेनाश्च वेणिकाः कुकुरास्तथा। आरेवकास्त्रिगर्ताश्च मद्रका यवनास्तथा ॥६-४७-७॥
The places include the Śūrasenas, Veṇikas, and Kukuras, as well as the Ārevakas, Trigartas, Madrakas, and Yavanas.
शत्रुञ्जयेन सहितास्तथा दुःशासनेन च। विकर्णेन च वीरेण तथा नन्दोपनन्दकैः ॥६-४७-८॥
The group, including Shatruñjaya, Duḥśāsana, Vikarna, the hero, and Nanda and Upananda, were together.
चित्रसेनेन सहिताः सहिताः पाणिभद्रकैः। भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु सह सैन्यपुरस्कृताः ॥६-४७-९॥
Accompanied by Citraseṇa and Pāṇibhadrakas, they should ensure the protection of Bhīṣma, who is at the forefront of the army.
ततो द्रोणश्च भीष्मश्च तव पुत्रश्च मारिष। अव्यूहन्त महाव्यूहं पाण्डूनां प्रतिबाधने ॥६-४७-१०॥
Then Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and your son, O great one, arranged a formidable military formation to obstruct the Pāṇḍavas.
भीष्मः सैन्येन महता समन्तात्परिवारितः। ययौ प्रकर्षन्महतीं वाहिनीं सुरराडिव ॥६-४७-११॥
Bhishma, encircled by the vast army on all sides, advanced, leading the mighty forces like Indra, the king of gods.
तमन्वयान्महेष्वासो भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान्। कुन्तलैश्च दशार्णैश्च मागधैश्च विशां पते ॥६-४७-१२॥
The great archer Bharadvaja, renowned and glorious, followed him along with the Kuntalas, Dasharnas, and Magadhas, O lord of men.
विदर्भैर्मेकलैश्चैव कर्णप्रावरणैरपि। सहिताः सर्वसैन्येन भीष्ममाहवशोभिनम् ॥६-४७-१३॥
Bhishma, accompanied by the Vidarbhas, Mekalas, and Karna's forces, shone brilliantly in the battle with his entire army.
गान्धाराः सिन्धुसौवीराः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः। शकुनिश्च स्वसैन्येन भारद्वाजमपालयत् ॥६-४७-१४॥
The Gandharas, Sindhus, Sauviras, Shibis, and Vasatis were led by Shakuni, who, with his army, protected Bharadvaja.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सहितः सर्वसोदरैः। अश्वातकैर्विकर्णैश्च तथा शर्मिलकोसलैः ॥६-४७-१५॥
Then King Duryodhana, along with all his brothers, Ashwatakas, Vikarna, and also Sharmila and Kosala, was present.
दरदैश्चूचुपैश्चैव तथा क्षुद्रकमालवैः। अभ्यरक्षत संहृष्टः सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम् ॥६-४७-१६॥
Saubala's army was joyfully guarded by the Daradas, Cūcupas, and Kṣudrakamālavas.
भूरिश्रवाः शलः शल्यो भगदत्तश्च मारिष। विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ वामं पार्श्वमपालयन् ॥६-४७-१७॥
Bhūriśravāḥ, Śalaḥ, Śalyaḥ, Bhagadattaḥ, and the two Avanti princes, Vindānuvinda, were guarding the left flank, O great one.
सौमदत्तिः सुशर्मा च काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः। शतायुश्च श्रुतायुश्च दक्षिणं पार्श्वमास्थिताः ॥६-४७-१८॥
Saumadatti, Susharma, Kamboja, Sudakshina, Shatayu, and Shrutayu were positioned on the right flank.
अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः। महत्या सेनया सार्धं सेनापृष्ठे व्यवस्थिताः ॥६-४७-१९॥
Ashwatthama, Kripa, and Kritavarma, along with Satyaki, were positioned at the back of the army with a large force.
पृष्ठगोपास्तु तस्यासन्नानादेश्या जनेश्वराः। केतुमान्वसुदानश्च पुत्रः काश्यस्य चाभिभूः ॥६-४७-२०॥
The rear guards were the independent kings Ketuman, Vasudana, and Abhibhu, the son of Kashi, who were near him.
ततस्ते तावकाः सर्वे हृष्टा युद्धाय भारत। दध्मुः शङ्खान्मुदा युक्ताः सिंहनादांश्च नादयन् ॥६-४७-२१॥
Then all your warriors, filled with joy and ready for battle, O Bharata, blew their conches and made sounds like the roaring of lions.
तेषां श्रुत्वा तु हृष्टानां कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः। सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् ॥६-४७-२२॥
Upon hearing the joyous sounds of his kin, the elder of the Kuru dynasty, the revered grandfather, gloriously blew his conch after roaring like a lion.
ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पेश्यश्च विविधाः परैः। आनकाश्चाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥६-४७-२३॥
Then, conches, drums, tabors, and various other instruments were sounded by others, creating a tumultuous noise.
ततः श्वेतैर्हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ। प्रदध्मतुः शङ्खवरौ हेमरत्नपरिष्कृतौ ॥६-४७-२४॥
Then, standing on the grand chariot drawn by white horses, they sounded their magnificent conches, embellished with gold and jewels.
पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः। पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥६-४७-२५॥
Krishna blew his conch named Panchajanya, Arjuna blew his conch named Devadatta, and Bhima, known for his terrible deeds, blew his mighty conch named Paundra.
अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ ॥६-४७-२६॥
King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, blew his conch named Anantavijaya. Nakula and Sahadeva blew their conches named Sughosha and Manipushpaka.
काशिराजश्च शैब्यश्च शिखण्डी च महारथः। धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्च महायशाः ॥६-४७-२७॥
The King of Kashi, Shaibya, Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata, and Satyaki, all renowned warriors, are present.
पाञ्चाल्यश्च महेष्वासो द्रौपद्याः पञ्च चात्मजाः। सर्वे दध्मुर्महाशङ्खान्सिंहनादांश्च नेदिरे ॥६-४७-२८॥
The son of Drupada and the five sons of Draupadi, all of whom were great archers, blew their mighty conches, and the sound echoed like lion-roars.
स घोषः सुमहांस्तत्र वीरैस्तैः समुदीरितः। नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयत् ॥६-४७-२९॥
The great sound made by the heroes echoed loudly across the sky and the earth.
एवमेते महाराज प्रहृष्टाः कुरुपाण्डवाः। पुनर्युद्धाय सञ्जग्मुस्तापयानाः परस्परम् ॥६-४७-३०॥
Thus, O great king, the joyful Kurus and Pandavas once more went to battle, inflicting pain upon one another.
