विरथा रथिनश्चान्ये धावमानाः समन्ततः। तत्र तत्रैव दृश्यन्ते सायुधाः साङ्गदैर्भुजैः ॥६-५१-२४॥

नासीत्तत्र पुमान्कश्चित्तव सैन्यस्य भारत। योऽर्जुनं समरे शूरं प्रत्युद्यायात्कथञ्चन ॥६-५१-३३॥
nāsīttatra pumānkaścittava sainyasya bhārata। yo'rjunaṃ samare śūraṃ pratyudyāyātkathaṃcana ॥6-51-33॥

यो यो हि समरे पार्थं पत्युद्याति विशां पते। स स वै विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैः परलोकाय नीयते ॥६-५१-३४॥
yo yo hi samare pārthaṃ patyudyāti viśāṃ pate। sa sa vai viśikhaistīkṣṇaiḥ paralokāya nīyate ॥6-51-34॥

(Whoever indeed advances against Arjuna in battle, O lord of men, he is indeed led to the other world by sharp arrows.)
Whoever dares to confront Arjuna in battle, O lord of men, is inevitably taken to the afterlife by sharp arrows.
तेषु विद्रवमाणेषु तव योधेषु सर्वशः। अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च दध्मतुर्वारिजोत्तमौ ॥६-५१-३५॥
teṣu vidravamāṇeṣu tava yodheṣu sarvaśaḥ। arjuno vāsudevaśca dadhmaturvārijottamau ॥6-51-35॥

तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा पिता देवव्रतस्तव। अब्रवीत्समरे शूरं भारद्वाजं स्मयन्निव ॥६-५१-३६॥
tatprabhagnaṁ balaṁ dṛṣṭvā pitā devavratas tava। abravīt samare śūraṁ bhāradvājaṁ smayann iva ॥6-51-36॥

Seeing your army shattered, your father Devavrata, with a smile, addressed the valiant Bharadvaja in the battlefield.
एष पाण्डुसुतो वीरः कृष्णेन सहितो बली। तथा करोति सैन्यानि यथा कुर्याद्धनञ्जयः ॥६-५१-३७॥
eṣa pāṇḍusuto vīraḥ kṛṣṇena sahito balī। tathā karoti sainyāni yathā kuryād dhanañjayaḥ ॥6-51-37॥

न निवर्तयितुं चापि शक्येयं महती चमूः। अन्योन्यप्रेक्षया पश्य द्रवतीयं वरूथिनी ॥६-५१-३९॥
na nivartayituṃ cāpi śakyeyaṃ mahatī camūḥ। anyonyaprekṣayā paśya dravatīyaṃ varūthinī ॥6-51-39॥

एष चास्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठं भानुमान्प्रतिपद्यते। वपूंषि सर्वलोकस्य संहरन्निव सर्वथा ॥६-५१-४०॥
eṣa cāstaṃ giriśreṣṭhaṃ bhānumānpratipadyate। vapūṃṣi sarvalokasya saṃharanniva sarvathā ॥6-51-40॥

(This sun proceeds to the best of mountains, setting, as if withdrawing completely the forms of all the worlds.)

तत्रावहारं सम्प्राप्तं मन्येऽहं पुरुषर्षभ। श्रान्ता भीताश्च नो योधा न योत्स्यन्ति कथञ्चन ॥६-५१-४१॥
tatrāvahāraṃ samprāptaṃ manye'haṃ puruṣarṣabha। śrāntā bhītāśca no yodhā na yotsyanti kathaṃcana ॥6-51-41॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अवहारं (avahāraṃ) - withdrawal; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptaṃ) - arrived; मन्ये (manye) - I think; अहम् (aham) - I; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - tired; भीताः (bhītāḥ) - frightened; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; न (na) - not; योत्स्यन्ति (yotsyanti) - will fight; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(There, I think, O best of men, the withdrawal has arrived. Our tired and frightened warriors will not fight in any way.)
I believe, O best of men, that the withdrawal has occurred there. Our warriors, being tired and frightened, will not engage in battle in any way.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्मो द्रोणमाचार्यसत्तमम्। अवहारमथो चक्रे तावकानां महारथः ॥६-५१-४२॥
evamuktvā tato bhīṣmo droṇamācāryasattamam। avahāramatho cakre tāvakānāṃ mahārathaḥ ॥6-51-42॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; आचार्यसत्तमम् (ācāryasattamam) - the best of teachers; अवहारम् (avahāram) - retreat; अथ (atha) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - made; तावकानाम् (tāvakānām) - of your side; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(Thus having spoken, then Bhishma made Drona, the best of teachers, retreat of your side, the great chariot-warrior.)
After speaking thus, Bhishma, the great chariot-warrior, instructed Drona, the best of teachers, to retreat on your side.
ततोऽवहारः सैन्यानां तव तेषां च भारत। अस्तं गच्छति सूर्येऽभूत्सन्ध्याकाले च वर्तति ॥६-५१-४३॥
tato'vahāraḥ sainyānāṃ tava teṣāṃ ca bhārata। astaṃ gacchati sūrye'bhūtsandhyākāle ca vartati ॥6-51-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अवहारः (avahāraḥ) - withdrawal; सैन्यानां (sainyānāṃ) - of the armies; तव (tava) - your; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; अस्तं (astaṃ) - setting; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; सूर्ये (sūrye) - the sun; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; सन्ध्याकाले (sandhyākāle) - at twilight; च (ca) - and; वर्तति (vartati) - was happening;]
(Then the withdrawal of your and their armies, O Bharata, happened as the sun was setting and twilight was occurring.)
Then, O Bharata, as the sun set and twilight descended, the withdrawal of both your and their armies took place.
