भीष्म उवाच॥

ततः स भगवान्देवो लोकानां परमेश्वरः। ब्रह्माणं प्रत्युवाचेदं स्निग्धगम्भीरया गिरा ॥६-६२-१॥
tataḥ sa bhagavān devo lokānāṃ parameśvaraḥ। brahmāṇaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ snigdhagambhīrayā girā ॥6-62-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed; देवः (devaḥ) - god; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; परमेश्वरः (parameśvaraḥ) - the supreme lord; ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - to Brahma; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदम् (idam) - this; स्निग्धगम्भीरया (snigdhagambhīrayā) - with gentle and deep; गिरा (girā) - voice;]
(Then he, the blessed god, the supreme lord of the worlds, replied to Brahma with a gentle and deep voice.)

विदितं तात योगान्मे सर्वमेतत्तवेप्सितम्। तथा तद्भवितेत्युक्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥६-६२-२॥
viditaṁ tāta yogānme sarvametattavepsitam। tathā tadbhavitetyuktvā tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥6-62-2॥

(Known, dear, by yoga, my, all, this, desired by you. Thus, that will happen, having said, there, indeed, disappeared.)
"Dear, all that you desired to know through yoga is known to me. Thus, having said that, he disappeared right there."
ततो देवर्षिगन्धर्वा विस्मयं परमं गताः। कौतूहलपराः सर्वे पितामहमथाब्रुवन् ॥६-६२-३॥
tato devarṣigandharvā vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ। kautūhalaparāḥ sarve pitāmahamathābruvan ॥6-62-3॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवर्षि (devarṣi) - divine sages; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - celestial musicians; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - wonder; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained; कौतूहलपराः (kautūhalaparāḥ) - curious; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - to the grandsire; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(Then the divine sages and celestial musicians attained supreme wonder. All, being curious, then said to the grandsire.)

को न्वयं यो भगवता प्रणम्य विनयाद्विभो। वाग्भिः स्तुतो वरिष्ठाभिः श्रोतुमिच्छाम तं वयम् ॥६-६२-४॥
ko nvayaṃ yo bhagavatā praṇamya vinayād vibho। vāgbhiḥ stuto variṣṭhābhiḥ śrotum icchāma taṃ vayam ॥6-62-4॥

(Who indeed is this, who, having bowed to the Lord from humility, is praised with words by the best? We wish to hear him, O Lord.)

(Which is supreme, future and to be, which is the soul of all beings, who is the lord indeed, Brahman, and which is the supreme state.)
The supreme entity, which encompasses the future and what is to be, is the soul of all beings, the lord, and Brahman, representing the ultimate state.
तेनास्मि कृतसंवादः प्रसन्नेन सुरर्षभाः। जगतोऽनुग्रहार्थाय याचितो मे जगत्पतिः ॥६-६२-७॥
tenāsmi kṛtasaṁvādaḥ prasannena surarṣabhāḥ। jagato'nugrahārthāya yācito me jagatpatiḥ ॥6-62-7॥

मानुषं लोकमातिष्ठ वासुदेव इति श्रुतः। असुराणां वधार्थाय सम्भवस्व महीतले ॥६-६२-८॥
mānuṣaṃ lokamātiṣṭha vāsudeva iti śrutaḥ। asurāṇāṃ vadhārthāya sambhavasva mahītale ॥6-62-8॥

सङ्ग्रामे निहता ये ते दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः। त इमे नृषु सम्भूता घोररूपा महाबलाः ॥६-६२-९॥
saṅgrāme nihatā ye te daityadānavarākṣasāḥ। ta ime nṛṣu sambhūtā ghorarūpā mahābalāḥ ॥6-62-9॥
[सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; निहता (nihatā) - killed; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - they; दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः (daityadānavarākṣasāḥ) - demons and ogres; त (ta) - those; इमे (ime) - these; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men; सम्भूता (sambhūtā) - born; घोररूपा (ghorarūpā) - terrible forms; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty;]
(In battle, those demons and ogres who were killed, these have been born among men in terrible forms, mighty.)
In the battle, those demons and ogres who were slain have now taken birth among humans in terrifying forms, possessing great strength.
तेषां वधार्थं भगवान्नरेण सहितो वशी। मानुषीं योनिमास्थाय चरिष्यति महीतले ॥६-६२-१०॥
teṣāṃ vadhārthaṃ bhagavānnareṇa sahito vaśī। mānuṣīṃ yonimāsthāya cariṣyati mahītale ॥6-62-10॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - their; वधार्थं (vadhārtham) - for the purpose of killing; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; नरेण (nareṇa) - with a man; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; वशी (vaśī) - the controller; मानुषीं (mānuṣīm) - human; योनिम् (yonim) - womb; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - assuming; चरिष्यति (cariṣyati) - will move; महीतले (mahītale) - on the earth;]
(For their destruction, the Lord, accompanied by a man, the controller, will assume a human womb and move on the earth.)
To destroy them, the Lord, along with a man, will take birth in a human form and live on earth.
नरनारायणौ यौ तौ पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ। सहितौ मानुषे लोके सम्भूतावमितद्युती ॥६-६२-११॥
naranārāyaṇau yau tau purāṇāvṛṣisattamau। sahitau mānuṣe loke sambhūtāvamitadyutī ॥6-62-11॥
[नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Narayana; यौ (yau) - who; तौ (tau) - those two; पुराणौ (purāṇau) - ancient; ऋषिसत्तमौ (ṛṣisattamau) - best of sages; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; मानुषे (mānuṣe) - in the human; लोके (loke) - world; सम्भूतौ (sambhūtau) - born; अमितद्युती (amitadyutī) - of immeasurable splendor;]
(Nara and Narayana, those two ancient best of sages, born together in the human world, of immeasurable splendor.)

अजेयौ समरे यत्तौ सहितावमरैरपि। मूढास्त्वेतौ न जानन्ति नरनारायणावृषी ॥६-६२-१२॥

(Invincible in battle, engaged together even with the immortals; but these fools do not know Nara and Narayana, the sages.)

tasyāhamātmajo brahmā sarvasya jagataḥ patiḥ। vāsudevo'rcanīyo vaḥ sarvalokamaheśvaraḥ ॥6-62-13॥

(I am his son, Brahma, the lord of all the world. Vasudeva, the great lord of all worlds, is worthy of your worship.)

तथा मनुष्योऽयमिति कदाचित्सुरसत्तमाः। नावज्ञेयो महावीर्यः शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ॥६-६२-१४॥
tathā manuṣyo'yamiti kadācitsurasattamāḥ। nāvajñeyo mahāvīryaḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ ॥6-62-14॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; मनुष्यः (manuṣyaḥ) - man; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; कदाचित् (kadācit) - sometimes; सुरसत्तमाः (surasattamāḥ) - O best of gods; न (na) - not; अवज्ञेयः (avajñeyaḥ) - to be disregarded; महावीर्यः (mahāvīryaḥ) - of great valor; शङ्ख (śaṅkha) - conch; चक्र (cakra) - discus; गदा (gadā) - mace; धरः (dharaḥ) - bearer;]
(Thus, this man, sometimes, O best of gods, is not to be disregarded, of great valor, the bearer of conch, discus, and mace.)

एतत्परमकं गुह्यमेतत्परमकं पदम्। एतत्परमकं ब्रह्म एतत्परमकं यशः ॥६-६२-१५॥

एतदक्षरमव्यक्तमेतत्तच्छाश्वतं महत्। एतत्पुरुषसञ्ज्ञं वै गीयते ज्ञायते न च ॥६-६२-१६॥
etad akṣaram avyaktam etat tac chāśvataṃ mahat। etat puruṣasañjñaṃ vai gīyate jñāyate na ca ॥6-62-16॥

(This imperishable, unmanifest, this that is eternal and great, this is indeed known as puruṣa, is sung and is not known.)
This imperishable and unmanifest entity, which is eternal and great, is indeed known as 'puruṣa'. It is sung about, yet it is not truly known.
एतत्परमकं तेज एतत्परमकं सुखम्। एतत्परमकं सत्यं कीर्तितं विश्वकर्मणा ॥६-६२-१७॥

तस्मात्सर्वैः सुरैः सेन्द्रैर्लोकैश्चामितविक्रमः। नावज्ञेयो वासुदेवो मानुषोऽयमिति प्रभुः ॥६-६२-१८॥
tasmātsarvaiḥ suraiḥ sendrairlokaiścāmitavikramaḥ। nāvajñeyo vāsudevo mānuṣo'yamiti prabhuḥ ॥6-62-18॥

(Therefore, by all the gods with Indra and by the worlds, this Vasudeva, of immeasurable valor, is not to be disregarded as a human, thus said the Lord.)

यश्च मानुषमात्रोऽयमिति ब्रूयात्सुमन्दधीः। हृषीकेशमवज्ञानात्तमाहुः पुरुषाधमम् ॥६-६२-१९॥
yaśca mānuṣamātro'yamiti brūyātsumandadhīḥ। hṛṣīkeśamavajñānāttamāhuḥ puruṣādhamam ॥6-62-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; मानुषमात्रः (mānuṣamātraḥ) - mere human; अयम् (ayam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - would say; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - very foolish; हृषीकेशम् (hṛṣīkeśam) - Hṛṣīkeśa; अवज्ञानात् (avajñānāt) - out of disrespect; तम् (tam) - him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; पुरुषाधमम् (puruṣādhamam) - lowest of men;]
(Whoever, out of disrespect, would say "This is just a mere human," they call him the lowest of men, being very foolish, towards Hṛṣīkeśa.)
Whoever, due to ignorance, refers to Hṛṣīkeśa as merely a human, is considered extremely foolish and is called the lowest among men.
योगिनं तं महात्मानं प्रविष्टं मानुषीं तनुम्। अवमन्येद्वासुदेवं तमाहुस्तामसं जनाः ॥६-६२-२०॥
yoginaṃ taṃ mahātmānaṃ praviṣṭaṃ mānuṣīṃ tanum। avamanyedvāsudevaṃ tamāhustāmasaṃ janāḥ ॥6-62-20॥
[योगिनं (yoginaṃ) - sage; तं (taṃ) - that; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṃ) - great soul; प्रविष्टं (praviṣṭaṃ) - entered; मानुषीं (mānuṣīṃ) - human; तनुम् (tanum) - body; अवमन्येत् (avamanyet) - disrespect; वासुदेवं (vāsudevaṃ) - Vasudeva; तम् (tam) - him; आहुः (āhuḥ) - call; तामसं (tāmasaṃ) - ignorant; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(The sage, that great soul, having entered a human body, if they disrespect Vasudeva, they call him ignorant people.)
The people who disrespect Vasudeva, despite him being a great soul who has taken a human form, are considered ignorant.
देवं चराचरात्मानं श्रीवत्साङ्कं सुवर्चसम्। पद्मनाभं न जानाति तमाहुस्तामसं जनाः ॥६-६२-२१॥
devaṁ carācarātmānaṁ śrīvatsāṅkaṁ suvarcasam। padmanābhaṁ na jānāti tamāhustāmasaṁ janāḥ ॥6-62-21॥
[देवं (devaṁ) - god; चराचरात्मानं (carācarātmānaṁ) - soul of all moving and non-moving; श्रीवत्साङ्कं (śrīvatsāṅkaṁ) - bearing the mark of Śrīvatsa; सुवर्चसम् (suvarcasam) - radiant; पद्मनाभं (padmanābhaṁ) - lotus-naveled; न (na) - not; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; तम् (tam) - him; आहु: (āhuḥ) - they say; तामसं (tāmasaṁ) - ignorant; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(People say that those who do not know the god, the soul of all moving and non-moving, bearing the mark of Śrīvatsa, radiant, and lotus-naveled, are ignorant.)
People refer to those who do not recognize the divine being, who is the essence of all that moves and does not move, marked by Śrīvatsa, radiant, and with a lotus in his navel, as ignorant.
किरीटकौस्तुभधरं मित्राणामभयङ्करम्। अवजानन्महात्मानं घोरे तमसि मज्जति ॥६-६२-२२॥
kirīṭakaustubhadharaṃ mitrāṇāmabhayaṅkaram। avajānannmahātmānaṃ ghore tamasi majjati ॥6-62-22॥
[किरीट (kirīṭa) - crown; कौस्तुभ (kaustubha) - Kaustubha gem; धरं (dharaṃ) - wearing; मित्राणाम् (mitrāṇām) - of friends; अभयङ्करम् (abhayaṅkaram) - fearless; अवजानन् (avajānann) - disregarding; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - great soul; घोरे (ghore) - in terrible; तमसि (tamasi) - darkness; मज्जति (majjati) - sinks;]
(Wearing the crown and Kaustubha gem, fearless to friends, disregarding the great soul, sinks in terrible darkness.)
He who wears the crown and the Kaustubha gem, who is fearless to his friends, disregards the great soul and sinks into terrible darkness.
एवं विदित्वा तत्त्वार्थं लोकानामीश्वरेश्वरः। वासुदेवो नमस्कार्यः सर्वलोकैः सुरोत्तमाः ॥६-६२-२३॥
evaṃ viditvā tattvārthaṃ lokānāmīśvareśvaraḥ। vāsudevo namaskāryaḥ sarvalokaiḥ surottamāḥ ॥6-62-23॥

(You were prevented before, dear, by sages versed in Vedas. Do not go to battle with that wise Vasudeva. Do not go with the Pandavas, thus, you do not understand that out of delusion.)
