Pancharatra and Core: Both sides withdrew from the battle that evening; Arjuna provides a pillow made of arrows to Bhishma; everyone departs after making arrangement to protect Bhishma, while he lies on the bed of arrows.

katham āsaṃs tadā yodhā hīnā bhīṣmeṇa sañjaya। balinā devakalpena gurvarthe brahmacāriṇā ॥6-115-1॥

अश्मसारमयं नूनं हृदयं मम सञ्जय। श्रुत्वा विनिहतं भीष्मं शतधा यन्न दीर्यते ॥६-११५-४॥

(Certainly, my heart is made of stone essence, O Sanjaya; having heard that Bhishma is slain, it does not break into a hundred pieces.)

पुनः पुनर्न मृष्यामि हतं देवव्रतं रणे। न हतो जामदग्न्येन दिव्यैरस्त्रैः स्म यः पुरा ॥६-११५-५॥
punaḥ punarna mṛṣyāmi hataṃ devavrataṃ raṇe। na hato jāmadagnyena divyairastraiḥ sma yaḥ purā ॥6-115-5॥

(Again and again, I cannot bear that Devavrata was killed in battle. He was not killed by Jamadagni's son with divine weapons, indeed, who formerly (was).)

यदद्य निहतेनाजौ भीष्मेण जयमिच्छता। चेष्टितं नरसिंहेन तन्मे कथय सञ्जय ॥६-११५-६॥

(Which today, with Bhishma slain in battle, desiring victory, was the effort by the lion among men, that tell me, Sanjaya.)

उभयोः सेनयो राजन्क्षत्रियान्भयमाविशत्। भीष्मं शन्तनवं दृष्ट्वा विशीर्णकवचध्वजम् ॥ कुरवः पर्यवर्तन्त पाण्डवाश्च विशां पते ॥६-११५-१०॥

(O king, fear entered the warriors of both armies. Seeing Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, with torn armor and banner, the Kurus retreated, and the Pandavas, O lord of the people.)

खं तमोवृतमासीच्च नासीद्भानुमतः प्रभा। ररास पृथिवी चैव भीष्मे शान्तनवे हते ॥६-११५-११॥

(The sky was covered by darkness, and there was no light of the sun. The earth indeed trembled when Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, was slain.)
The sky was enveloped in darkness, devoid of sunlight. The earth shook as Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, was killed.
अयं ब्रह्मविदां श्रेष्ठो अयं ब्रह्मविदां गतिः। इत्यभाषन्त भूतानि शयानं भरतर्षभम् ॥६-११५-१२॥
ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ śreṣṭho ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ gatiḥ। ityabhāṣanta bhūtāni śayānaṁ bharatarṣabham ॥6-115-12॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; ब्रह्मविदाम् (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; अयम् (ayam) - this; ब्रह्मविदाम् (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the refuge; इति (iti) - thus; अभाषन्त (abhāṣanta) - spoke; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - the beings; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; भरतर्षभम् (bharatarṣabham) - the best of the Bharatas;]
(This is the best of the knowers of Brahman, this is the refuge of the knowers of Brahman. Thus spoke the beings, lying the best of the Bharatas.)
The beings declared, 'This is the greatest among the knowers of Brahman, and the ultimate refuge for them,' as they observed the noble Bharata lying down.
अयं पितरमाज्ञाय कामार्तं शन्तनुं पुरा। ऊर्ध्वरेतसमात्मानं चकार पुरुषर्षभः ॥६-११५-१३॥
ayaṁ pitaram ājñāya kāmārtaṁ śantanuṁ purā। ūrdhvaretasam ātmānaṁ cakāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ ॥6-115-13॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; कामार्तम् (kāmārtam) - afflicted by desire; शन्तनुम् (śantanum) - Śantanu; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ऊर्ध्वरेतसम् (ūrdhvaretasam) - celibate; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; चकार (cakāra) - made; पुरुषर्षभः (puruṣarṣabhaḥ) - best of men;]
(This best of men, having understood his father Śantanu afflicted by desire, formerly made himself celibate.)
This noble man, realizing his father Śantanu's plight due to desire, once chose to become celibate.
इति स्म शरतल्पस्थं भरतानाममध्यमम्। ऋषयः पर्यधावन्त सहिताः सिद्धचारणैः ॥६-११५-१४॥
iti sma śaratalpasthaṃ bharatānāmamadhyamam। ṛṣayaḥ paryadhāvanta sahitāḥ siddhacāraṇaiḥ ॥6-115-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; शरतल्पस्थम् (śaratalpastham) - lying on the bed of arrows; भरतानाम् (bharatānām) - of the Bharatas; मध्यमम् (madhyamam) - the middle one; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पर्यधावन्त (paryadhāvanta) - ran around; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together with; सिद्धचारणैः (siddhacāraṇaiḥ) - siddhas and charanas;]
(Thus indeed, the sages ran around the middle one of the Bharatas, lying on the bed of arrows, together with siddhas and charanas.)
Thus, the sages, along with the siddhas and charanas, gathered around the middle of the Bharatas, who was lying on the bed of arrows.
हते शान्तनवे भीष्मे भरतानां पितामहे। न किञ्चित्प्रत्यपद्यन्त पुत्रास्तव च भारत ॥६-११५-१५॥
hate śāntanave bhīṣme bharatānāṃ pitāmahe। na kiñcitpratyapadyanta putrāstava ca bhārata ॥6-115-15॥
[हते (hate) - when slain; शान्तनवे (śāntanave) - Śantanava (son of Śantanu, Bhīṣma); भीष्मे (bhīṣme) - Bhīṣma; भरतानां (bharatānāṃ) - of the Bharatas; पितामहे (pitāmahe) - the grandfather; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; प्रत्यपद्यन्त (pratyapadyanta) - obtained; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(When Śantanava Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Bharatas, was slain, your sons did not obtain anything, O Bhārata.)
After the fall of Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu and the grandfather of the Bharatas, your sons, O Bhārata, gained nothing.
विवर्णवदनाश्चासन्गतश्रीकाश्च भारत। अतिष्ठन्व्रीडिताश्चैव ह्रिया युक्ता ह्यधोमुखाः ॥६-११५-१६॥
vivarṇavadanāścāsaṅgataśrīkāśca bhārata। atiṣṭhanvrīḍitāścaiva hriyā yuktā hyadhomukhāḥ ॥6-115-16॥
[विवर्ण (vivarṇa) - pale; वदनाः (vadanāḥ) - faces; च (ca) - and; आसन (āsan) - were; गत (gata) - lost; श्रीकाः (śrīkāḥ) - splendor; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अतिष्ठन् (atiṣṭhan) - stood; व्रीडिताः (vrīḍitāḥ) - ashamed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह्रिया (hriyā) - with modesty; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - endowed; हि (hi) - indeed; अधोमुखाः (adhomukhāḥ) - with downcast faces;]
(Pale-faced and deprived of splendor, O Bhārata, they stood ashamed, indeed endowed with modesty, with downcast faces.)
O Bhārata, they stood there with pale faces, having lost their splendor, feeling ashamed and modest, with their faces turned downwards.
पाण्डवाश्च जयं लब्ध्वा सङ्ग्रामशिरसि स्थिताः। सर्वे दध्मुर्महाशङ्खान्हेमजालपरिष्कृतान् ॥६-११५-१७॥
pāṇḍavāśca jayaṃ labdhvā saṅgrāmaśirasi sthitāḥ। sarve dadhmurmahāśaṅkhānhemajālapariṣkṛtān ॥6-115-17॥

(The Pandavas, having obtained victory, stood at the head of the battle. All blew great conches adorned with a golden network.)

[भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; तूर्यनिनादेषु (tūryaninādeṣu) - in the sounds of musical instruments; वाद्यमानेषु (vādyamāneṣu) - being played; च (ca) - and; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; अपश्याम (apaśyāma) - we saw; रणे (raṇe) - in the battle; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - of great strength; आक्रीडमानम् (ākrīḍamānam) - sporting; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - son of Kunti; हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; महता (mahatā) - great; युतम् (yutam) - endowed with;]
(Intensely, in the sounds of musical instruments being played, O sinless one, we saw in the battle, O king, Bhimasena of great strength, sporting, the son of Kunti, endowed with great joy.)

निहत्य समरे शत्रून्महाबलसमन्वितान्। संमोहश्चापि तुमुलः कुरूणामभवत्तदा ॥६-११५-१९॥
nihatya samare śatrūnmahābalasamanvitān। saṃmohaścāpi tumulaḥ kurūṇāmabhavattadā ॥6-115-19॥

(Having slain the enemies endowed with great strength in battle, there was also an uproarious confusion of the Kurus then.)

कर्णदुर्योधनौ चापि निःश्वसेतां मुहुर्मुहुः। तथा निपतिते भीष्मे कौरवाणां धुरन्धरे ॥ हाहाकारमभूत्सर्वं निर्मर्यादमवर्तत ॥६-११५-२०॥

(Then or by the gods, O son of Pritha, having mastered all weapons and missiles, you, having obtained the destroying eye, are burnt by the terrible eye.)

एवमुक्तो धर्मराजः प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम्। तव प्रसादाद्विजयः क्रोधात्तव पराजयः ॥ त्वं हि नः शरणं कृष्ण भक्तानामभयङ्करः ॥६-११५-६३॥
evamukto dharmarājaḥ pratyuvāca janārdanam। tava prasādād vijayaḥ krodhāt tava parājayaḥ ॥ tvaṃ hi naḥ śaraṇaṃ kṛṣṇa bhaktānām abhayaṅkaraḥ ॥6-115-63॥

(Thus spoken, Dharmaraja replied to Janardana: "By your grace, victory; by your anger, defeat. You are indeed our refuge, Krishna, giver of fearlessness to devotees.")
Thus addressed, Dharmaraja replied to Janardana: "Victory comes from your grace, and defeat from your anger. You are truly our refuge, Krishna, the protector who grants fearlessness to your devotees."
अनाश्चर्यो जयस्तेषां येषां त्वमसि केशव। रष्किता समरे नित्यं नित्यं चापि हिते रतः ॥ सर्वथा त्वां समासाद्य नाश्चर्यमिति मे मतिः ॥६-११५-६४॥
anāścaryo jayasteṣāṃ yeṣāṃ tvamasi keśava। raṣkitā samare nityaṃ nityaṃ cāpi hite rataḥ ॥ sarvathā tvāṃ samāsādya nāścaryamiti me matiḥ ॥6-115-64॥
[अनाश्चर्यः (anāścaryaḥ) - not surprising; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of those; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असि (asi) - are; केशव (keśava) - Keśava; रष्किता (raṣkitā) - protected; समरे (samare) - in battle; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हिते (hite) - in welfare; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having attained; न (na) - not; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Victory is not surprising for those of whom you are, O Keśava, protected in battle, always engaged in welfare. In every way, having attained you, there is no wonder, thus is my opinion.)

(Thus spoken, smiling, Janardana replied: "Indeed, this speech is appropriate in you, O best of kings.")
