teṣvaṇīkeṣu bhagneṣu pāṇḍuputreṇa sañjaya। calitānāṃ drutānāṃ ca kathamāsīnmano hi vaḥ ॥7-30-1॥

(In those armies broken by the son of Pandu, Sanjaya, how was indeed your mind of those who are moving and running?)

अनीकानां प्रभग्नानां व्यवस्थानमपश्यताम्। दुष्करं प्रतिसन्धानं तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥७-३०-२॥
anīkānāṃ prabhagnānāṃ vyavasthānamapaśyatām। duṣkaraṃ pratisandhānaṃ tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥7-30-2॥

तथापि तव पुत्रस्य प्रियकामा विशां पते। यशः प्रवीरा लोकेषु रक्षन्तो द्रोणमन्वयुः ॥७-३०-३॥
tathāpi tava putrasya priyakāmā viśāṃ pate। yaśaḥ pravīrā lokeṣu rakṣanto droṇamanvayuḥ ॥7-30-3॥

(Still, desiring the favor of your son, O lord of the people, the heroes in the worlds, protecting fame, followed Drona.)
Nevertheless, O lord of the people, desiring your son's favor, the heroes of the world followed Drona to protect his fame.
समुद्यतेषु शस्त्रेषु सम्प्राप्ते च युधिष्ठिरे। अकुर्वन्नार्यकर्माणि भैरवे सत्यभीतवत् ॥७-३०-४॥

द्रोणं द्रोणमिति ह्येके मा द्रोणमिति चापरे। कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च द्रोणद्यूतमवर्तत ॥७-३०-७॥

यं यं स्म भजते द्रोणः पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजम्। तत्र तत्र स्म पाञ्चाल्यो धृष्टद्युम्नोऽथ धीयते ॥७-३०-८॥
yaṃ yaṃ sma bhajate droṇaḥ pāñcālānāṃ rathavrajama। tatra tatra sma pāñcālyo dhṛṣṭadyumno'tha dhīyate ॥7-30-8॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; यं (yaṃ) - whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; भजते (bhajate) - approaches; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; पाञ्चालानां (pāñcālānāṃ) - of the Pāñcālas; रथव्रजम् (rathavrajama) - chariot group; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्म (sma) - indeed; पाञ्चाल्यः (pāñcālyaḥ) - the Pāñcāla prince; धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; अथ (atha) - then; धीयते (dhīyate) - is placed;]
(Whomsoever Droṇa approaches among the chariot group of the Pāñcālas, there indeed the Pāñcāla prince Dhṛṣṭadyumna is then placed.)
Whenever Droṇa approaches the chariot group of the Pāñcālas, the Pāñcāla prince Dhṛṣṭadyumna is always there to confront him.
यथाभागविपर्यासे सङ्ग्रामे भैरवे सति। वीराः समासदन्वीरानगच्छन्भीरवः परान् ॥७-३०-९॥
yathābhāgaviparyāse saṅgrāme bhairave sati। vīrāḥ samāsadanvīrānagacchanbhīravaḥ parān ॥7-30-9॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; भाग (bhāga) - part; विपर्यासे (viparyāse) - inversion; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; भैरवे (bhairave) - terrible; सति (sati) - being; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; समासदन् (samāsadan) - approached; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; अगच्छन् (agacchan) - went; भीरवः (bhīravaḥ) - cowards; परान् (parān) - others;]
(As in the inversion of parts, in the terrible battle, heroes approached heroes, cowards went to others.)
In the terrifying battle, as the sides were reversed, the heroes confronted heroes, while the cowards retreated to others.
अकम्पनीयाः शत्रूणां बभूवुस्तत्र पाण्डवाः। अकम्पयंस्त्वनीकानि स्मरन्तः क्लेशमात्मनः ॥७-३०-१०॥
akampanīyāḥ śatrūṇāṃ babhūvustatra pāṇḍavāḥ। akampayaṃstvanīkāni smarantaḥ kleśamātmanaḥ ॥7-30-10॥
[अकम्पनीयाः (akampanīyāḥ) - unshakeable; शत्रूणां (śatrūṇāṃ) - of enemies; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; तत्र (tatra) - there; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; अकम्पयन् (akampayan) - shaking; तु (tu) - but; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - armies; स्मरन्तः (smarantaḥ) - remembering; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - suffering; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of themselves;]
(The Pandavas there became unshakeable to the enemies, but shaking the armies, remembering their own suffering.)
The Pandavas stood firm against their enemies, causing the armies to tremble as they recalled their own hardships.
ते त्वमर्षवशं प्राप्ता ह्रीमन्तः सत्त्वचोदिताः। त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्न्यवर्तन्त घ्नन्तो द्रोणं महाहवे ॥७-३०-११॥
te tvamarṣavaśaṃ prāptā hrīmantaḥ sattvacoditāḥ। tyaktvā prāṇānnyavartanta ghnanto droṇaṃ mahāhave ॥7-30-11॥
[ते (te) - they; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्षवशम् (arṣavaśam) - under the control of anger; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - having attained; ह्रीमन्तः (hrīmantaḥ) - modest; सत्त्वचोदिताः (sattvacoditāḥ) - impelled by righteousness; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - returned; घ्नन्तः (ghnantaḥ) - killing; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle;]
(They, having attained the control of anger, modest and impelled by righteousness, having abandoned their lives, returned, killing Drona in the great battle.)
They, driven by righteousness and modesty, overcame their anger and sacrificed their lives, returning to slay Drona in the great battle.
अयसामिव सम्पातः शिलानामिव चाभवत्। दीव्यतां तुमुले युद्धे प्राणैरमिततेजसाम् ॥७-३०-१२॥
ayasām iva sampātaḥ śilānām iva ca abhavat। dīvyatāṃ tumule yuddhe prāṇaiḥ amita-tejasām ॥7-30-12॥
[अयसाम् (ayasām) - of metals; इव (iva) - like; सम्पातः (sampātaḥ) - collision; शिलानाम् (śilānām) - of rocks; इव (iva) - like; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; दीव्यताम् (dīvyatām) - of the shining ones; तुमुले (tumule) - in the tumultuous; युद्धे (yuddhe) - battle; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with lives; अमित (amita) - immeasurable; तेजसाम् (tejasām) - of the brilliant ones;]
(The collision was like that of metals and rocks in the tumultuous battle of the shining ones with immeasurable brilliance.)
The clash was as fierce as that of metals and rocks in the tumultuous battle, fought by the radiant warriors with immeasurable valor.
न तु स्मरन्ति सङ्ग्राममपि वृद्धास्तथाविधम्। दृष्टपूर्वं महाराज श्रुतपूर्वमथापि वा ॥७-३०-१३॥
na tu smaranti saṅgrāmamapi vṛddhāstathāvidham। dṛṣṭapūrvaṃ mahārāja śrutapūrvamathāpi vā ॥7-30-13॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - remember; सङ्ग्रामम् (saṅgrāmam) - battle; अपि (api) - even; वृद्धाः (vṛddhāḥ) - elders; तथाविधम् (tathāvidham) - such; दृष्टपूर्वम् (dṛṣṭapūrvam) - seen before; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; श्रुतपूर्वम् (śrutapūrvam) - heard before; अथ (atha) - or; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or;]
(But even the elders do not remember such a battle, O great king, seen or heard before.)

प्राकम्पतेव पृथिवी तस्मिन्वीरावसादने। प्रवर्तता बलौघेन महता भारपीडिता ॥७-३०-१४॥
prākampateva pṛthivī tasminvīrāvasādane। pravartatā balaughena mahatā bhārapīḍitā ॥7-30-14॥

(The earth trembles as if oppressed by the burden, engaged in the downfall of the hero by the multitude of great forces.)
The earth seemed to tremble as if burdened by the weight, involved in the hero's downfall due to the great multitude of forces.
घूर्णतो हि बलौघस्य दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव निस्वनः। अजातशत्रोः क्रुद्धस्य पुत्रस्य तव चाभवत् ॥७-३०-१५॥

(The sound of the mighty force, whirling indeed, having stopped the sky, as if, became of Ajatashatru, angry, your son, and.)
The sound of the mighty force, whirling as if it had stopped the sky, became like that of your angry son, Ajatashatru.
समासाद्य तु पाण्डूनामनीकानि सहस्रशः। द्रोणेन चरता सङ्ख्ये प्रभग्नानि शितैः शरैः ॥७-३०-१६॥
samāsādya tu pāṇḍūnāmanīkāni sahasraśaḥ। droṇena caratā saṅkhye prabhagnāni śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥7-30-16॥
[समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डूनाम् (pāṇḍūnām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - armies; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; चरता (caratā) - moving; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; प्रभग्नानि (prabhagnāni) - scattered; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows;]
(Having approached the armies of the Pāṇḍavas by thousands, they were scattered in the battle by Droṇa with sharp arrows.)

तेषु प्रमथ्यमानेषु द्रोणेनाद्भुतकर्मणा। पर्यवारयदासाद्य द्रोणं सेनापतिः स्वयम् ॥७-३०-१७॥
teṣu pramathyamāneṣu droṇenādbhutakarmaṇā। paryavārayadāsādya droṇaṃ senapatiḥ svayam ॥7-30-17॥

(In them being agitated by Droṇa with wonderful deeds, having reached, the general himself surrounded Droṇa.)
Amidst the turmoil caused by Droṇa's extraordinary feats, the general himself approached and surrounded Droṇa.
तदद्भुतमभूद्युद्धं द्रोणपाञ्चाल्ययोस्तदा। नैव तस्योपमा काचित्सम्भवेदिति मे मतिः ॥७-३०-१८॥
tad adbhutam abhūd yuddhaṃ droṇa-pāñcālyayoḥ tadā। naiva tasyopamā kācit sambhaved iti me matiḥ ॥7-30-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; पाञ्चाल्ययोः (pāñcālyayoḥ) - and the Panchala; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - its; उपमा (upamā) - comparison; काचित् (kācit) - any; सम्भवेत् (sambhavet) - could be; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(That wonderful battle between Drona and the Panchala was then; indeed, no comparison of it could be thus my opinion.)

ततो नीलोऽनलप्रख्यो ददाह कुरुवाहिनीम्। शरस्फुलिङ्गश्चापार्चिर्दहन्कक्षमिवानलः ॥७-३०-१९॥
tato nīlo'nalaprakhyo dadāha kuruvāhinīm। śarasphuliṅgaścāpārćirdahankṣamivānalaḥ ॥7-30-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नीलः (nīlaḥ) - Nila; अनलप्रख्यः (analaprakhyaḥ) - like fire; ददाह (dadāha) - burned; कुरुवाहिनीम् (kuruvāhinīm) - the Kuru army; शर (śara) - arrows; स्फुलिङ्गः (sphuliṅgaḥ) - sparks; च (ca) - and; अपार्चिः (apārciḥ) - without flames; दहन् (dahan) - burning; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - forest; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire;]
(Then Nila, like fire, burned the Kuru army; arrows were like sparks, burning without flames, like a fire in the forest.)

तं दहन्तमनीकानि द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान्। पूर्वाभिभाषी सुश्लक्ष्णं स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥७-३०-२०॥

(Nila, why with many burnt by your warriors with fiery arrows? By me alone indeed fight, angry, strike and with swift ones.)

तं पद्मनिकराकारं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम्। व्याकोशपद्माभमुखं नीलो विव्याध सायकैः ॥७-३०-२२॥
taṁ padmanikarākāraṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam। vyākośapadmābhamukhaṁ nīlo vivyādha sāyakaiḥ ॥7-30-22॥

(Thinking thus, all the great warriors of the Pandavas, how will Indra protect us from the enemies, O respected one?)

दक्षिणेन तु सेनायाः कुरुते कदनं बली। संशप्तकावशेषस्य नारायणबलस्य च ॥७-३०-२९॥
dakṣiṇena tu senāyāḥ kurute kadanaṃ balī। saṃśaptakāvaśeṣasya nārāyaṇabalasya ca ॥7-30-29॥
