आर्जुनिः क्षत्रधर्मा च बृहत्क्षत्रश्च वीर्यवान्। चेदिपो धृष्टकेतुश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ घटोत्कचः ॥७-३४-३॥

एते चान्ये च सगणाः कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः। समभ्यधावन्सहसा भारद्वाजं युयुत्सवः ॥७-३४-६॥
ete cānye ca sagaṇāḥ kṛtāstrā yuddhadurmadāḥ। samabhyadhāvansahasā bhāradvājaṃ yuyutsavaḥ ॥7-34-6॥

(These and others, with groups, prepared with weapons, arrogant in battle, suddenly rushed towards Bharadvaja, eager to fight.)
These warriors, along with others in groups, armed and arrogant in battle, suddenly charged towards Bharadvaja, eager for combat.
समवेतांस्तु तान्सर्वान्भारद्वाजोऽपि वीर्यवान्। असम्भ्रान्तः शरौघेण महता समवारयत् ॥७-३४-७॥
samavetāṃstu tānsarvānbhāradvājo'pi vīryavān। asambhrāntaḥ śaraugheṇa mahatā samavārayat ॥7-34-7॥

(Bharadvaja, the mighty, unperturbed, restrained all of them assembled with a great multitude of arrows.)
Bharadvaja, the mighty warrior, calmly restrained all the assembled forces with a great shower of arrows.
महौघाः सलिलस्येव गिरिमासाद्य दुर्भिदम्। द्रोणं ते नाभ्यवर्तन्त वेलामिव जलाशयाः ॥७-३४-८॥
mahaughāḥ salilasyeva girimāsādya durbhidam। droṇaṃ te nābhyavartanta velāmiva jalāśayāḥ ॥7-34-8॥

(Great waves of water, like reaching an unbreakable mountain, did not overcome Drona, like reservoirs do not overcome the shore.)

पीड्यमानाः शरै राजन्द्रोणचापविनिःसृतैः। न शेकुः प्रमुखे स्थातुं भारद्वाजस्य पाण्डवाः ॥७-३४-९॥
pīḍyamānāḥ śarai rājan droṇacāpaviniḥsṛtaiḥ। na śekuḥ pramukhe sthātuṃ bhāradvājasya pāṇḍavāḥ ॥7-34-9॥
[पीड्यमानाः (pīḍyamānāḥ) - being oppressed; शरै (śarai) - by arrows; राजन् (rājan) - O king; द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona's; चाप (cāpa) - bow; विनिःसृतैः (viniḥsṛtaiḥ) - released; न (na) - not; शेकुः (śekuḥ) - were able; प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in front; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; भारद्वाजस्य (bhāradvājasya) - of Bharadvaja's son; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas;]
(Being oppressed by arrows, O king, released from Drona's bow, the Pandavas were not able to stand in front of Bharadvaja's son.)
O king, the Pandavas could not withstand the arrows released from Drona's bow and were unable to face Bharadvaja's son.
तदद्भुतमपश्याम द्रोणस्य भुजयोर्बलम्। यदेनं नाभ्यवर्तन्त पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥७-३४-१०॥
tad adbhutam apaśyāma droṇasya bhujayor balam। yad enaṃ nābhyavartanta pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha ॥7-34-10॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अपश्याम (apaśyāma) - we saw; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Drona; भुजयोः (bhujayoḥ) - of the arms; बलम् (balam) - strength; यत् (yat) - which; एनम् (enam) - him; न (na) - not; अभ्यवर्तन्त (abhyavartanta) - overcame; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Panchalas; सृञ्जयैः (sṛñjayaiḥ) - with the Srinjayas; सह (saha) - together;]
(We saw that wonderful strength of Drona's arms, which the Panchalas together with the Srinjayas could not overcome.)
We witnessed the incredible strength of Drona's arms, which the Panchalas and the Srinjayas together could not surpass.
तमायान्तमभिक्रुद्धं द्रोणं दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरः। बहुधा चिन्तयामास द्रोणस्य प्रतिवारणम् ॥७-३४-११॥
tam āyāntam abhikruddhaṃ droṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bahudhā cintayāmāsa droṇasya prativāraṇam ॥7-34-11॥
[तम् (tam) - that; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; अभिक्रुद्धम् (abhikruddhaṃ) - angry; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - thought; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; प्रतिवारणम् (prativāraṇam) - counteraction;]
(Seeing the angry Droṇa approaching, Yudhiṣṭhira thought in many ways about counteracting Droṇa.)
Upon seeing the enraged Droṇa approaching, Yudhiṣṭhira contemplated various strategies to counteract him.
अशक्यं तु तमन्येन द्रोणं मत्वा युधिष्ठिरः। अविषह्यं गुरुं भारं सौभद्रे समवासृजत् ॥७-३४-१२॥
aśakyaṃ tu tamanyena droṇaṃ matvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। aviṣahyaṃ guruṃ bhāraṃ saubhadre samavāsṛjat ॥7-34-12॥

(But thinking Droṇa to be impossible by another, Yudhishthira assigned the unbearable heavy burden to Abhimanyu.)

वासुदेवादनवरं फल्गुनाच्चामितौजसम्। अब्रवीत्परवीरघ्नमभिमन्युमिदं वचः ॥७-३४-१३॥
vāsudevād anavaraṃ phalgunāc cāmitaujasam। abravīt paravīraghnam abhimanyum idaṃ vacaḥ ॥7-34-13॥

(From Vasudeva, without superior, from Arjuna, and of immeasurable energy, said to Abhimanyu, the slayer of enemy heroes, this speech.)
Vasudeva, unparalleled and of immeasurable energy, spoke these words to Abhimanyu, the slayer of enemy heroes, and son of Arjuna.
एत्य नो नार्जुनो गर्हेद्यथा तात तथा कुरु। चक्रव्यूहस्य न वयं विद्म भेदं कथञ्चन ॥७-३४-१४॥
etya no nārjuno garhedyathā tāta tathā kuru। cakravyūhasya na vayaṃ vidma bhedaṃ kathaṃcana ॥7-34-14॥

अभिमन्यो वरं तात याचतां दातुमर्हसि। पितॄणां मातुलानां च सैन्यानां चैव सर्वशः ॥७-३४-१६॥
abhimanyo varaṃ tāta yācatāṃ dātumarhasi। pitṝṇāṃ mātulānāṃ ca sainyānāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ ॥7-34-16॥

(Abhimanyu, a boon, father, to ask, to give, you should. Of the fathers, of the maternal uncles, and of the armies, and indeed, entirely.)

(Arjuna indeed, our father, would blame thus from the battle. Quickly, having taken the weapon, penetrate Drona's army.)

भिन्ध्यनीकं युधा श्रेष्ठ द्वारं सञ्जनयस्व नः। वयं त्वानुगमिष्यामो येन त्वं तात यास्यसि ॥७-३४-२०॥
bhindhyanīkaṃ yudhā śreṣṭha dvāraṃ sañjanayasva naḥ। vayaṃ tvānugamiṣyāmo yena tvaṃ tāta yāsyasi ॥7-34-20॥
[भिन्ध्य (bhindhya) - pierce; अनीकं (anīkaṃ) - army; युधा (yudhā) - with battle; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; द्वारं (dvāraṃ) - gate; सञ्जनयस्व (sañjanayasva) - create; नः (naḥ) - for us; वयं (vayaṃ) - we; त्वा (tvā) - you; अनुगमिष्यामः (anugamiṣyāmaḥ) - will follow; येन (yena) - by which; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तात (tāta) - dear; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - will go;]
(Pierce the army with battle, O best, create a gate for us. We will follow you, dear, by which you will go.)
O best warrior, pierce the enemy's army and create a path for us. We will follow you, dear father, wherever you go.
धनञ्जयसमं युद्धे त्वां वयं तात संयुगे। प्रणिधायानुयास्यामो रक्षन्तः सर्वतोमुखाः ॥७-३४-२१॥
dhanañjayasamaṃ yuddhe tvāṃ vayaṃ tāta saṃyuge। praṇidhāyānuyāsyāmo rakṣantaḥ sarvatomukhāḥ ॥7-34-21॥

(I will enter this Drona's army, difficult to approach, like an enraged moth into the blazing fire.)

तत्कर्माद्य करिष्यामि हितं यद्वंशयोर्द्वयोः। मातुलस्य च या प्रीतिर्भविष्यति पितुश्च मे ॥७-३४-२५॥

(I will perform that first action which will be beneficial to both families, and which will bring affection to my uncle and father.)

शिशुनैकेन सङ्ग्रामे काल्यमानानि सङ्घशः। अद्य द्रक्ष्यन्ति भूतानि द्विषत्सैन्यानि वै मया ॥७-३४-२६॥

(Thus, while you are speaking, O son of Subhadra, may your strength increase. You dare to break Drona's army, which is very difficult to penetrate.)

rakṣitaṃ puruṣavyāghrairmaheṣvāsaiḥ prahāribhiḥ। sādhyarudramarutkalpairvasvagnyādityavikramaiḥ ॥7-34-28॥
[रक्षितं (rakṣitaṃ) - protected; पुरुषव्याघ्रैः (puruṣavyāghraiḥ) - by tiger-like men; महेष्वासैः (maheṣvāsaiḥ) - by great archers; प्रहारिभिः (prahāribhiḥ) - by attackers; साध्य (sādhya) - Sādhyas; रुद्र (rudra) - Rudras; मरुत्कल्पैः (marutkalpaiḥ) - like the Maruts; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasus; अग्नि (agni) - Agni; आदित्य (āditya) - Ādityas; विक्रमैः (vikramaiḥ) - by the prowess;]
(Protected by tiger-like men, great archers, attackers, Sādhyas, Rudras, like the Maruts, Vasus, Agni, Ādityas, by the prowess.)
The place was protected by men as fierce as tigers, skilled archers, and attackers, resembling the Sādhyas, Rudras, Maruts, Vasus, Agni, and Ādityas in their prowess.

(Having heard those words of his, he urged the charioteer, "Drive Sumitra's horses quickly into Drona's army in battle.")
