Pancharatra and Core: Though requested by Duryodhana, Drona refuses to leave his post to fight Arjuna. Instead, he ritually bound the armour with a mantra and sent the king to the great battle.

यथाशक्ति च ते ब्रह्मन्वर्तये वृत्तिमुत्तमाम्। प्रीणामि च यथाशक्ति तच्च त्वं नावबुध्यसे ॥७-६९-१२॥

नादास्यच्चेद्वरं मह्यं भवान्पाण्डवनिग्रहे। नावारयिष्यं गच्छन्तमहं सिन्धुपतिं गृहान् ॥७-६९-१५॥
nādāsyaccedvaraṃ mahyaṃ bhavānpāṇḍavanigrahe। nāvārayiṣyaṃ gacchantamahaṃ sindhupatiṃ gṛhān ॥7-69-15॥

(Even if a man reaches within Yama's fangs, he may indeed be released; but if he falls under Arjuna's control, Jayadratha may not be released in battle.)
A man may escape even from the clutches of death, but once Jayadratha falls under Arjuna's control in battle, he cannot escape.
स तथा कुरु शोणाश्व यथा रक्ष्येत सैन्धवः। मम चार्तप्रलापानां मा क्रुधः पाहि सैन्धवम् ॥७-६९-१८॥

(He, thus do, O Śoṇāśva, so that the horse is protected. Do not be angry at my distressed words, protect the horse.)
He said, "O Śoṇāśva, ensure that the horse is protected. Please do not be angry at my distressed words, just protect the horse."

अद्भुतं चाद्य पश्यन्तु लोके सर्वधनुर्धराः। विषक्तं त्वयि कौन्तेयं वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः ॥७-६९-३४॥
adbhutaṁ cādya paśyantu loke sarvadhanurdharāḥ। viṣaktaṁ tvayi kaunteyaṁ vāsudevasya paśyataḥ ॥7-69-34॥

yadi tvāṃ sāsurasurāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ। yodhayanti trayo lokāḥ sanarā nāsti te bhayam ॥7-69-36॥

(If demons and gods, along with yakshas, serpents, and demons, fight you, the three worlds with men, there is no fear for you.)

(Neither Kṛṣṇa, nor the son of Kunti, nor any other bearer of weapons in battle will be able to deliver arrows on your armor.)

स त्वं कवचमास्थाय क्रुद्धमद्य रणेऽर्जुनम्। त्वरमाणः स्वयं याहि न चासौ त्वां सहिष्यते ॥७-६९-३८॥
sa tvaṁ kavacam āsthāya kruddham adya raṇe'rjunam। tvaramāṇaḥ svayaṁ yāhi na ca asau tvāṁ sahiṣyate ॥7-69-38॥

(You, having assumed armor, go yourself hastening to the angry Arjuna in battle today, and he will not endure you.)

(Then, standing beside Vishnu and Indra and others, the best of gods, he said this truthful speech to the distressed best among gods.)

[स (sa) - he; तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of him only; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the grace; वै (vai) - indeed; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; एव (eva) - certainly; रिपुः (ripuḥ) - enemy; बली (balī) - strong; न (na) - not; आगत्वा (āgatvā) - having come; शङ्करस्थानं (śaṅkarasthānaṃ) - to the place of Shankara; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara;]
(He, by his grace, would indeed kill the strong enemy. Not having come to the place of Shankara, the Lord Hara is seen.)
By the grace of Shankara, he would certainly defeat the strong enemy. However, without coming to the abode of Shankara, Lord Hara is perceived.
दृष्ट्वा हनिष्यथ रिपुं क्षिप्रं गच्छत मन्दरम्। यत्रास्ते तपसां योनिर्दक्षयज्ञविनाशनः ॥ पिनाकी सर्वभूतेशो भगनेत्रनिपातनः ॥७-६९-५६॥
dṛṣṭvā haniṣyatha ripuṃ kṣipraṃ gacchata mandaram। yatrāste tapasāṃ yonirdakṣayajñavināśanaḥ ॥ pinākī sarvabhūteśo bhaganetranipātanaḥ ॥7-69-56॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; हनिष्यथ (haniṣyatha) - you will kill; रिपुम् (ripum) - enemy; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; गच्छत (gacchata) - go; मन्दरम् (mandaram) - to Mandara; यत्र (yatra) - where; आस्ते (āste) - resides; तपसाम् (tapasām) - of penances; योनिः (yoniḥ) - source; दक्षयज्ञविनाशनः (dakṣayajñavināśanaḥ) - destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice; पिनाकी (pinākī) - Pinaki; सर्वभूतेशः (sarvabhūteśaḥ) - lord of all beings; भगनेत्रनिपातनः (bhaganetranipātanaḥ) - destroyer of Bhaga's eye;]
(Having seen, you will quickly kill the enemy; go to Mandara, where resides the source of penances, the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, Pinaki, the lord of all beings, the destroyer of Bhaga's eye.)

(They, having gone together with the gods and Brahma, saw the Mandara mountain, a heap of lights shining like a million suns.)

(He said, "Welcome, gods, speak what shall I do? Infallible is the sight to me, therefore let there be wish fulfillment for you.")
He said, "Welcome, gods, tell me what I should do. The sight is infallible to me, so may your wishes be fulfilled."
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे प्रत्यूचुस्तं दिवौकसः। तेजो हृतं नो वृत्रेण गतिर्भव दिवौकसाम् ॥७-६९-५९॥
evamuktāstu te sarve pratyūcustaṃ divaukasaḥ। tejo hṛtaṃ no vṛtreṇa gatirbhava divaukasām ॥7-69-59॥

(Thus spoken, all of them, the gods, replied to him: "Our brilliance has been stolen by Vritra; be the refuge of the gods.")

मूर्तीरीक्षष्व नो देव प्रहारैर्जर्जरीकृताः। शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नाः स्म गतिर्भव महेश्वर ॥७-६९-६०॥

(It is known to me, O gods, that this task is very powerful, born of Tvaṣṭṛ's energy, terrible and irresistible by the unrestrained.)
I am aware, O gods, that this formidable task, born from Tvaṣṭṛ's energy, is extremely powerful and cannot be resisted by those who are unrestrained.
अवश्यं तु मया कार्यं साह्यं सर्वदिवौकसाम्। ममेदं गात्रजं शक्र कवचं गृह्य भास्वरम् ॥७-६९-६२॥

(Thus, the boon-giver, having spoken, gave the armor and the mantra itself. He, protected by that armor, went towards the army of Vritra.)

नानाविधैश्च शस्त्रौघैः पात्यमानैर्महारणे। न सन्धिः शक्यते भेत्तुं वर्मबन्धस्य तस्य तु ॥७-६९-६४॥
nānāvidhaiśca śastraughaiḥ pātyamānairmahāraṇe। na sandhiḥ śakyate bhettuṃ varmabandhasya tasya tu ॥7-69-64॥

(With various kinds of showers of weapons being hurled in the great battle, it is not possible to break the joint of that armor's fastening.)

ततो जघान समरे वृत्रं देवपतिः स्वयम्। तं च मत्रमयं बन्धं वर्म चाङ्गिरसे ददौ ॥७-६९-६५॥

ब्रह्मसूत्रेण बध्नामि कवचं तव पार्थिव। हिरण्यगर्भेण यथा बद्धं विष्णोः पुरा रणे ॥७-६९-६९॥
brahmasūtreṇa badhnāmi kavacaṃ tava pārthiva। hiraṇyagarbheṇa yathā baddhaṃ viṣṇoḥ purā raṇe ॥7-69-69॥

(With the thread of Brahman, I bind your armor, O prince, as it was bound by Hiranyagarbha to Vishnu in ancient times in battle.)

(As the divine armor of Indra was bound by Brahma in the battle against Tāraka, so I bind your (armor).)
Just as Brahma bound the divine armor of Indra in the battle against Tāraka, so do I bind your armor now.
बद्ध्वा तु कवचं तस्य मन्त्रेण विधिपूर्वकम्। प्रेषयामास राजानं युद्धाय महते द्विजः ॥७-६९-७१॥
baddhvā tu kavacaṃ tasya mantreṇa vidhipūrvakam। preṣayāmāsa rājānaṃ yuddhāya mahate dvijaḥ ॥7-69-71॥

स संनद्धो महाबाहुराचार्येण महात्मना। रथानां च सहस्रेण त्रिगर्तानां प्रहारिणाम् ॥७-६९-७२॥
