praviṣṭayormahārāja pārthavārṣṇeyayostadā। duryodhane prayāte ca pṛṣṭhataḥ puruṣarṣabhe ॥7-70-1॥

जवेनाभ्यद्रवन्द्रोणं महता निस्वनेन च। पाण्डवाः सोमकैः सार्धं ततो युद्धमवर्तत ॥७-७०-२॥
javenābhyadravandroṇaṃ mahatā nisvanena ca। pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ sārdhaṃ tato yuddhamavartata ॥7-70-2॥

(With speed, the Pāṇḍavas, along with the Somakas, attacked Droṇa with great sound, and then the battle commenced.)
The Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by the Somakas, swiftly attacked Droṇa with great noise, and thus the battle began.
तद्युद्धमभवद्घोरं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्। पाञ्चालानां कुरूणां च व्यूहस्य पुरतोऽद्भुतम् ॥७-७०-३॥
tadyuddhamabhavadghoraṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। pāñcālānāṃ kurūṇāṃ ca vyūhasya purato'dbhutam ॥7-70-3॥

(That battle became terrible, tumultuous, and hair-raising in front of the formation of the Pāñcālas and the Kurus.)
The battle that ensued was a terrifying and tumultuous spectacle, causing one's hair to stand on end, as it unfolded in front of the formations of the Pāñcālas and the Kurus.
राजन्कदाचिन्नास्माभिर्दृष्टं तादृङ्न च श्रुतम्। यादृङ्मध्यगते सूर्ये युद्धमासीद्विशां पते ॥७-७०-४॥
rājan kadācin nāsmābhir dṛṣṭaṃ tādṛṅ na ca śrutam। yādṛṅ madhyagate sūrye yuddham āsīd viśāṃ pate ॥7-70-4॥

(O king, such a battle in the middle of the sun was never seen or heard by us, O lord of men.)
O king, we have neither seen nor heard of such a battle when the sun was in the middle, O lord of men.
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखाः पार्था व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः। द्रोणस्य सैन्यं ते सर्वे शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥७-७०-५॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhāḥ pārthā vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ। droṇasya sainyaṃ te sarve śaravarṣairavākiran ॥7-70-5॥

वयं द्रोणं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्। पार्षतप्रमुखान्पार्थानभ्यवर्षाम सायकैः ॥७-७०-६॥

We positioned Droṇa, the foremost among all warriors, at the front and launched a barrage of arrows at the Pāṇḍavas led by Pārṣata.
महामेघाविवोदीर्णौ मिश्रवातौ हिमात्यये। सेनाग्रे विप्रकाशेते रुचिरे रथभूषिते ॥७-७०-७॥

समेत्य तु महासेने चक्रतुर्वेगमुत्तमम्। जाह्नवीयमुने नद्यौ प्रावृषीवोल्बणोदके ॥७-७०-८॥

भारद्वाजानिलोद्धूतः शरधारासहस्रवान्। अभ्यवर्षन्महारौद्रः पाण्डुसेनाग्निमुद्धतम् ॥७-७०-१०॥

(Stirred up by the wind of Bharadvaja, thousands of streams of arrows poured down, very fierce, upon the inflamed fire of the Pandava army.)

समुद्रमिव घर्मान्ते विवान्घोरो महानिलः। व्यक्षोभयदनीकानि पाण्डवानां द्विजोत्तमः ॥७-७०-११॥

वारयामास तान्द्रोणो जलौघानचलो यथा। पाण्डवान्समरे क्रुद्धान्पाञ्चालांश्च सकेकयान् ॥७-७०-१३॥
vārayāmāsa tāndroṇo jalaughānacalo yathā। pāṇḍavānsamare kruddhānpāñcālāṃśca sakekayān ॥7-70-13॥

(Just as Droṇa rains arrow showers on Pārṣata, so indeed Dhṛṣṭadyumna rained arrow showers.)

सनिस्त्रिंशपुरोवातः शक्तिप्रासर्ष्टिसंवृतः। ज्याविद्युच्चापसंह्रादो धृष्टद्युम्नबलाहकः ॥७-७०-१७॥
sanistriṁśapurovātaḥ śaktiprāsaṛṣṭisaṁvṛtaḥ। jyāvidyuccāpasaṁhrādo dhṛṣṭadyumnabalāhakaḥ ॥7-70-17॥

(Thus, but striving of Droṇa in battle, O Bhārata, having approached Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the army was split into three parts.)
