Pancharatra and Core: Drona responds to Duryodhana's rebuke, explaining the situation and his real helplessness against the Pandavas strength and righteousness.

सिन्धुराजे हते तात समरे सव्यसाचिना। तथैव भूरिश्रवसि किमासीद्वो मनस्तदा ॥७-१२६-१॥
sindhurāje hate tāta samare savyasācinā। tathaiva bhūriśravasi kimāsīdvo manastadā ॥7-126-1॥

O father, when Sindhuraja was slain in battle by Savyasachi, and similarly Bhurishravas, what was going through your mind at that time?
दुर्योधनेन च द्रोणस्तथोक्तः कुरुसंसदि। किमुक्तवान्परं तस्मात्तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥७-१२६-२॥
duryodhanena ca droṇastathoktaḥ kurusaṁsadi। kimuktavānparaṁ tasmāttanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥7-126-2॥

निष्टानको महानासीत्सैन्यानां तव भारत। सैन्धवं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥७-१२६-३॥
niṣṭānako mahān āsīt sainyānāṃ tava bhārata। saindhavaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhūriśravasam eva ca ॥7-126-3॥

Niṣṭānaka was a great warrior among your armies, O Bhārata. He witnessed the fall of Saindhava and Bhūriśravas.
मन्त्रितं तव पुत्रस्य ते सर्वमवमेनिरे। येन मन्त्रेण निहताः शतशः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥७-१२६-४॥
mantritaṁ tava putrasya te sarvamavamenire। yena mantreṇa nihatāḥ śataśaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ॥7-126-4॥
[मन्त्रितं (mantritaṁ) - enchanted; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - son's; ते (te) - they; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अवमेनिरे (avamenire) - were disregarded; येन (yena) - by which; मन्त्रेण (mantreṇa) - by the mantra; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - were slain; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - hundreds; क्षत्रियर्षभाः (kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ) - warrior chiefs;]

द्रोणस्तु तद्वचः श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य तव दुर्मनाः। मुहूर्तमिव तु ध्यात्वा भृशमार्तोऽभ्यभाषत ॥७-१२६-५॥
droṇastu tadvacaḥ śrutvā putrasya tava durmanāḥ। muhūrtamiva tu dhyātvā bhṛśamārto'bhyabhāṣata ॥7-126-5॥

(Drona, but having heard those words of your son, distressed, as if for a moment, but having thought greatly afflicted, spoke:)
Drona, upon hearing those words of your son, was deeply distressed. He paused for a moment, and then, greatly afflicted, he spoke:
दुर्योधन किमेवं मां वाक्षरैरभिकृन्तसि। अजय्यं समरे नित्यं ब्रुवाणं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥७-१२६-६॥
duryodhana kimevaṃ māṃ vākṣarairabhikṛntasi। ajayyaṃ samare nityaṃ bruvāṇaṃ savyasācinam ॥7-126-6॥

(Duryodhana, why do you thus cut me with words and letters, always speaking of Arjuna as invincible in battle?)
Duryodhana, why do you speak to me in such a manner, cutting me with your words, always declaring Arjuna to be invincible in battle?
एतेनैवार्जुनं ज्ञातुमलं कौरव संयुगे। यच्छिखण्ड्यवधीद्भीष्मं पाल्यमानः किरीटिना ॥७-१२६-७॥
etenaivārjunaṃ jñātumalaṃ kaurava saṃyuge। yacchikhaṇḍyavadhīdbhīṣmaṃ pālyamānaḥ kirīṭinā ॥7-126-7॥
[एतेन (etena) - by this; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्जुनं (arjunaṃ) - Arjuna; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; अलम् (alam) - enough; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; यत् (yat) - that; शिखण्डि (śikhaṇḍi) - Shikhandi; अवधीद् (avadhīd) - killed; भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṃ) - Bhishma; पाल्यमानः (pālyamānaḥ) - protected; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by the crowned one;]
(By this alone, it is enough to know Arjuna in battle, that Shikhandi killed Bhishma, protected by the crowned one.)
This alone is enough to understand Arjuna's prowess in battle, as it was Shikhandi who killed Bhishma under the protection of Arjuna, the one with the crown.
अवध्यं निहतं दृष्ट्वा संयुगे देवमानुषैः। तदैवाज्ञासिषमहं नेयमस्तीति भारती ॥७-१२६-८॥
avadhyaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁyuge devamānuṣaiḥ। tadaivājñāsiṣamahaṁ neyamastīti bhāratī ॥7-126-8॥
[अवध्यं (avadhyam) - invincible; निहतं (nihatam) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; संयुगे (saṁyuge) - in battle; देवमानुषैः (devamānuṣaiḥ) - by gods and men; तदैव (tadaiva) - then itself; अज्ञासिषम् (ajñāsiṣam) - I knew; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; इयम् (iyam) - this; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; भारती (bhāratī) - speech;]
(Having seen the invincible slain in battle by gods and men, I knew then itself that this speech is not.)
Upon witnessing the invincible being defeated in battle by gods and men, I immediately realized that this speech does not exist.
यं पुंसां त्रिषु लोकेषु सर्वशूरममंस्महि। तस्मिन्विनिहते शूरे किं शेषं पर्युपास्महे ॥७-१२६-९॥
yaṁ puṁsāṁ triṣu lokeṣu sarvaśūramamaṁsmahi। tasminvinihate śūre kiṁ śeṣaṁ paryupāsmahe ॥7-126-9॥
[यं (yaṁ) - whom; पुंसां (puṁsāṁ) - of men; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; सर्वशूरम् (sarvaśūram) - all-heroic; अमंस्महि (amaṁsmahi) - we remember; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; विनिहते (vinihate) - slain; शूरे (śūre) - hero; किं (kiṁ) - what; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remaining; पर्युपास्महे (paryupāsmahe) - we worship;]
(Whom of men in three worlds all-heroic we remember. In him slain hero what remaining we worship.)
We remember the all-heroic one among men in the three worlds. With that hero slain, what remains for us to worship?
यान्स्म तान्ग्लहते तातः शकुनिः कुरुसंसदि। अक्षान्न तेऽक्षा निशिता बाणास्ते शत्रुतापनाः ॥७-१२६-१०॥
yān sma tān glahate tātaḥ śakuniḥ kurusaṁsadi। akṣān na te'kṣā niśitā bāṇās te śatrutāpanāḥ ॥7-126-10॥
[यान् (yān) - whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; तान् (tān) - them; ग्लहते (glahate) - challenges; तातः (tātaḥ) - father; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Shakuni; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṁsadi) - in the Kuru assembly; अक्षात् (akṣāt) - from dice; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; अक्षा (akṣā) - dice; निशिताः (niśitāḥ) - sharp; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; ते (te) - they; शत्रुतापनाः (śatrutāpanāḥ) - enemy tormentors;]
(Whom indeed them challenges father Shakuni in the Kuru assembly from dice not they dice sharp arrows they enemy tormentors.)
In the Kuru assembly, Shakuni challenges those whom indeed father does not consider as mere dice, but as sharp arrows that torment the enemy.
त एते घ्नन्ति नस्तात विशिखा जयचोदिताः। यांस्तदा ख्याप्यमानांस्त्वं विदुरेण न बुध्यसे ॥७-१२६-११॥
ta ete ghnanti nastāta viśikhā jayacoditāḥ। yāṃstadā khyāpyamānāṃstvaṃ vidureṇa na budhyase ॥7-126-11॥
[त (ta) - those; एते (ete) - these; घ्नन्ति (ghnanti) - kill; नः (naḥ) - us; तात (tāta) - father; विशिखाः (viśikhāḥ) - arrows; जयचोदिताः (jayacoditāḥ) - urged by victory; यांश्च (yāṃśca) - whom; तदा (tadā) - then; ख्याप्यमानान् (khyāpyamānān) - being pointed out; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; न (na) - not; बुध्यसे (budhyase) - understand;]
(Those arrows urged by victory are killing us, father. You do not understand those being pointed out by Vidura then.)
Those arrows, driven by victory, are striking us, father. You fail to recognize those being indicated by Vidura at that time.
तास्ता विलपतश्चापि विदुरस्य महात्मनः। धीरस्य वाचो नाश्रौषीः क्षेमाय वदतः शिवाः ॥७-१२६-१२॥
tāstā vilapataścāpi vidurasya mahātmanaḥ। dhīrasya vāco nāśrauṣīḥ kṣemāya vadataḥ śivāḥ ॥7-126-12॥
[तास्ता (tāstā) - those; those; विलपतश् (vilapataḥ) - lamenting; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great soul; धीरस्य (dhīrasya) - of the wise; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; न (na) - not; अश्रौषीः (aśrauṣīḥ) - heard; क्षेमाय (kṣemāya) - for the welfare; वदतः (vadataḥ) - speaking; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious;]
(Those lamenting also did not hear the words of the great soul Vidura, who was wise, speaking for the welfare, auspicious.)
Those who were lamenting did not hear the wise and auspicious words of Vidura, the great soul, who was speaking for their welfare.
तदिदं वर्तते घोरमागतं वैशसं महत्। तस्यावमानाद्वाक्यस्य दुर्योधन कृते तव ॥७-१२६-१३॥
tadidaṁ vartate ghoram āgataṁ vaiśasaṁ mahat। tasyāvamānād vākyasya duryodhana kṛte tava ॥7-126-13॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṁ) - this; वर्तते (vartate) - is happening; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; आगतं (āgatam) - has come; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - calamity; महत् (mahat) - great; तस्य (tasya) - of that; अवमानात् (avamānāt) - due to insult; वाक्यस्य (vākyasya) - of the words; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; कृते (kṛte) - done; तव (tava) - by you;]
(This great terrible calamity has come due to the insult of those words done by you, Duryodhana.)
This great and terrible calamity has arisen due to the insult caused by your words, Duryodhana.
यच्च नः प्रेक्षमाणानां कृष्णामानाययः सभाम्। अनर्हतीं कुले जातां सर्वधर्मानुचारिणीम् ॥७-१२६-१४॥
yacca naḥ prekṣamāṇānāṃ kṛṣṇāmānāyayaḥ sabhām। anarhatīṃ kule jātāṃ sarvadharmānucāriṇīm ॥7-126-14॥
[यत् (yat) - that which; च (ca) - and; नः (naḥ) - our; प्रेक्षमाणानाम् (prekṣamāṇānām) - of those watching; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Draupadi; आनाययः (ānāyayaḥ) - brought; सभाम् (sabhām) - to the assembly; अनर्हतीम् (anarhatīm) - unworthy; कुले (kule) - in the family; जाताम् (jātām) - born; सर्वधर्म (sarvadharma) - all dharma; अनुचारिणीम् (anucāriṇīm) - follower;]
(That which, of those watching, brought Draupadi to the assembly, unworthy, born in the family, follower of all dharma.)
Draupadi, who was unworthy and born in a noble family, was brought to the assembly in front of those watching, despite being a follower of all dharma.
तस्याधर्मस्य गान्धारे फलं प्राप्तमिदं त्वया। नो चेत्पापं परे लोके त्वमर्च्छेथास्ततोऽधिकम् ॥७-१२६-१५॥
tasyādharmaḥ gāndhāre phalaṃ prāptamidaṃ tvayā। no cetpāpaṃ pare loke tvamarcchethāstato'dhikam ॥7-126-15॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अधर्मस्य (adharmasya) - of unrighteousness; गान्धारे (gāndhāre) - in Gandhara; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - obtained; इदं (idaṃ) - this; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नः (naḥ) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; परे (pare) - in the other; लोके (loke) - world; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्च्छेथाः (arcchethāḥ) - would obtain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अधिकम् (adhikam) - more;]
(The fruit of his unrighteousness in Gandhara has been obtained by you. If not, you would obtain more sin in the other world.)
The consequences of his unrighteous actions in Gandhara have come upon you. Otherwise, you would face even greater sin in the afterlife.
यच्च तान्पाण्डवान्द्यूते विषमेण विजित्य ह। प्राव्राजयस्तदारण्ये रौरवाजिनवाससः ॥७-१२६-१६॥
yacca tān pāṇḍavān dyūte viṣameṇa vijitya ha। prāvrājayas tadāraṇye rauravājina-vāsasaḥ ॥7-126-16॥
[यत् (yat) - that; च (ca) - and; तान् (tān) - those; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pāṇḍavas; द्यूते (dyūte) - in the game of dice; विषमेण (viṣameṇa) - unfairly; विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; ह (ha) - indeed; प्राव्राजयः (prāvrājayaḥ) - exiled; तदा (tadā) - then; अरण्ये (araṇye) - to the forest; रौरव (raurava) - Raurava; अजिन (ajina) - deer skin; वाससः (vāsasaḥ) - clothed;]
(And having unfairly conquered those Pāṇḍavas in the game of dice, indeed, you exiled them then to the forest, clothed in deer skin from Raurava.)
And having unfairly won against the Pāṇḍavas in the game of dice, you exiled them to the forest, where they wore deer skin from Raurava.
पुत्राणामिव चैतेषां धर्ममाचरतां सदा। द्रुह्येत्को नु नरो लोके मदन्यो ब्राह्मणब्रुवः ॥७-१२६-१७॥
putrāṇām iva caitēṣāṃ dharmam ācaratāṃ sadā। druhyet ko nu naro lōkē mad anyō brāhmaṇabruvaḥ ॥7-126-17॥
[पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; इव (iva) - like; च (ca) - and; एतेषाम् (etēṣām) - of these; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; आचरताम् (ācaratām) - practicing; सदा (sadā) - always; द्रुह्येत् (druhyet) - would harm; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - man; लोके (lōkē) - in the world; मत् (mat) - than me; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; ब्राह्मणब्रुवः (brāhmaṇabruvaḥ) - claiming to be a Brahmin;]
(Like sons, of these always practicing duty, who indeed would harm in the world, other than me, claiming to be a Brahmin.)
Who in the world would harm those who, like sons, always practice their duty, other than me, who claims to be a Brahmin?
पाण्डवानामयं कोपस्त्वया शकुनिना सह। आहृतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमते कुरुसंसदि ॥७-१२६-१८॥
pāṇḍavānām ayaṃ kopas tvayā śakuninā saha। āhṛto dhṛtarāṣṭrasya saṃmate kurusaṃsadi ॥7-126-18॥
[पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अयम् (ayam) - this; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शकुनिना (śakuninā) - with Shakuni; सह (saha) - together; आहृतः (āhṛtaḥ) - brought; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; संमते (saṃmate) - with consent; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṃsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
(This anger of the Pandavas, together with Shakuni, was brought by you with the consent of Dhritarashtra in the Kuru assembly.)

दुःशासनेन संयुक्तः कर्णेन परिवर्धितः। क्षत्तुर्वाक्यमनादृत्य त्वयाभ्यस्तः पुनः पुनः ॥७-१२६-१९॥
duḥśāsanena saṁyuktaḥ karṇena parivardhitaḥ। kṣatturvākyamanādṛtya tvayābhyastaḥ punaḥ punaḥ ॥7-126-19॥

You, having been associated with Duḥśāsana and nurtured by Karṇa, repeatedly ignored the charioteer's advice and continued your actions.
यत्तत्सर्वे पराभूय पर्यवारयतार्जुनिम्। सिन्धुराजानमाश्रित्य स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥७-१२६-२०॥
yattatsarve parābhūya paryavārayatārjunim। sindhurājānamāśritya sa vo madhye kathaṃ hataḥ ॥7-126-20॥

How was he, who had defeated all and surrounded Arjuna relying on the Sindhu king, killed in your midst?
कथं त्वयि च कर्णे च कृपे शल्ये च जीवति। अश्वत्थाम्नि च कौरव्य निधनं सैन्धवोऽगमत् ॥७-१२६-२१॥
kathaṁ tvayi ca karṇe ca kṛpe śalye ca jīvati। aśvatthāmni ca kauravya nidhanaṁ saindhavo'gamata ॥7-126-21॥

(How, while you, Karna, Kripa, Shalya, and Ashwatthama are alive, O Kaurava, did Saindhava meet his death?)
O Kaurava, how did Saindhava meet his death while you, Karna, Kripa, Shalya, and Ashwatthama are still alive?
यद्वस्तत्सर्वराजानस्तेजस्तिग्ममुपासते। सिन्धुराजं परित्रातुं स वो मध्ये कथं हतः ॥७-१२६-२२॥

मय्येव हि विशेषेण तथा दुर्योधन त्वयि। आशंसत परित्राणमर्जुनात्स महीपतिः ॥७-१२६-२३॥

त्वं च दुर्योधन बलं यदि शक्नोषि धारय। रात्रावपि हि योत्स्यन्ते संरब्धाः कुरुसृञ्जयाः ॥७-१२६-३८॥
tvaṁ ca duryodhana balaṁ yadi śaknoṣi dhāraya। rātrāvapi hi yotsyante saṁrabdhāḥ kurusṛñjayāḥ ॥7-126-38॥

(You, Duryodhana, if you can sustain the strength, indeed, the eager Kurus and Sṛñjayas will fight even at night.)

[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - Pāṇḍavas; सृञ्जयान् (sṛñjayān) - Sṛñjayas; मुष्णन् (muṣṇan) - stealing; क्षत्रिय (kṣatriya) - warriors; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - brilliance; नक्षत्राणाम् (nakṣatrāṇām) - of the stars; इव (iva) - like; अंशुमान् (aṃśumān) - the sun;]
(Thus having spoken, then Droṇa departed towards the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, stealing the brilliance of the warriors like the sun does of the stars.)
After speaking thus, Droṇa moved towards the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, diminishing the warriors' brilliance as the sun does to the stars.
