सैन्धवे निहते राजन्पुत्रस्तव सुयोधनः। अश्रुक्लिन्नमुखो दीनो निरुत्साहो द्विषज्जये ॥ अमन्यतार्जुनसमो योधो भुवि न विद्यते ॥७-१२५-१॥
saindhave nihate rājanputrastava suyodhanaḥ। aśruklinnamukho dīno nirutsāho dviṣajjaye ॥ amanyatārjunasamo yodho bhuvi na vidyate ॥7-125-1॥
[सैन्धवे (saindhave) - in Saindhava; निहते (nihate) - killed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तव (tava) - your; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana; अश्रुक्लिन्नमुखः (aśruklinnamukhaḥ) - tear-stained face; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - miserable; निरुत्साहः (nirutsāhaḥ) - disheartened; द्विषत् (dviṣat) - enemy; जये (jaye) - in victory; अमन्यत (amanyata) - thought; अर्जुनसमः (arjunasamaḥ) - equal to Arjuna; योधः (yodhaḥ) - warrior; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(In Saindhava being killed, O king, your son Suyodhana, with a tear-stained face, miserable, disheartened in the victory over the enemy, thought that there is no warrior on earth equal to Arjuna.)
Upon the death of Saindhava, your son Suyodhana, O king, with a tear-stained face and disheartened by the enemy's victory, believed that no warrior on earth was equal to Arjuna.
न द्रोणो न च राधेयो नाश्वत्थामा कृपो न च। क्रुद्धस्य प्रमुखे स्थातुं पर्याप्ता इति मारिष ॥७-१२५-२॥
na droṇo na ca rādheyo nāśvatthāmā kṛpo na ca। kruddhasya pramukhe sthātuṃ paryāptā iti māriṣa ॥7-125-2॥

(Neither Drona, nor Radheya, nor Ashwatthama, nor Kripa are sufficient to stand in front of the angry one, O great one.)
O great one, neither Drona, Radheya, Ashwatthama, nor Kripa are capable of standing before the wrathful one.
निर्जित्य हि रणे पार्थः सर्वान्मम महारथान्। अवधीत्सैन्धवं सङ्ख्ये नैनं कश्चिदवारयत् ॥७-१२५-३॥
nirjitya hi raṇe pārthaḥ sarvān mama mahārathān। avadhītsaindhavaṃ saṅkhye nainaṃ kaścidavārayat ॥7-125-3॥

(Having conquered indeed in battle, Arjuna killed all my great warriors; in battle, he killed Jayadratha, and no one could stop him.)

सर्वथा हतमेवैतत्कौरवाणां महद्बलम्। न ह्यस्य विद्यते त्राता साक्षादपि पुरंदरः ॥७-१२५-४॥

(In every way, this great strength of the Kauravas is indeed destroyed. For there is no protector of this, not even Indra directly.)

यमुपाश्रित्य सङ्ग्रामे कृतः शस्त्रसमुद्यमः। स कर्णो निर्जितः सङ्ख्ये हतश्चैव जयद्रथः ॥७-१२५-५॥
yamupāśritya saṅgrāme kṛtaḥ śastrasamudyamaḥ। sa karṇo nirjitaḥ saṅkhye hataścaiva jayadrathaḥ ॥7-125-5॥

(Having resorted to whom, effort with weapons was made in battle; he, Karṇa, was defeated in battle and Jayadratha was indeed killed.)

परुषाणि सभामध्ये प्रोक्तवान्यः स्म पाण्डवान्। स कर्णो निर्जितः सङ्ख्ये सैन्धवश्च निपातितः ॥७-१२५-६॥
paruṣāṇi sabhāmadhye proktavānyaḥ sma pāṇḍavān। sa karṇo nirjitaḥ saṅkhye saindhavaśca nipātitaḥ ॥7-125-6॥

(Harsh words were spoken in the assembly to the Pandavas by him who indeed was Karna. He was defeated in battle, and the Sindhu prince was slain.)

यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य शमं याचन्तमच्युतम्। तृणवत्तमहं मन्ये स कर्णो निर्जितो युधि ॥७-१२५-७॥
yasya vīryaṃ samāśritya śamaṃ yācantamacyutam। tṛṇavattamahaṃ manye sa karṇo nirjito yudhi ॥7-125-7॥

(Whose valor having resorted to, begging peace from Acyuta, like straw him I think, he Karna defeated in battle.)
I consider Karna, who sought peace from Acyuta relying on his valor, to be defeated in battle like straw.
एवं क्लान्तमना राजन्नुपायाद्द्रोणमीक्षितुम्। आगस्कृत्सर्वलोकस्य पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ ॥७-१२५-८॥
evaṃ klāntamanā rājannupāyāddroṇamīkṣitum। āgaskṛtsarvalokasya putraste bharatarṣabha ॥7-125-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; क्लान्तमना (klāntamanā) - with a weary mind; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उपायात् (upāyāt) - approached; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Drona; ईक्षितुम् (īkṣitum) - to see; आगस्कृत् (āgaskṛt) - offender; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the people; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus, with a weary mind, O king, your son, the offender of all the people, approached Drona to see.)

ततस्तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ कुरूणां वैशसं महत्। परान्विजयतश्चापि धार्तराष्ट्रान्निमज्जतः ॥७-१२५-९॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - narrated; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; वैशसम् (vaiśasam) - destruction; महत् (mahat) - great; परान् (parān) - enemies; विजयतः (vijayataḥ) - conquering; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; निमज्जतः (nimajjataḥ) - sinking;]
(Then he narrated all that great destruction of the Kurus, and also of the enemies conquering the sons of Dhritarashtra who were sinking.)

[पश्य (paśya) - see; मूर्धावसिक्तानाम् (mūrdhāvasiktānām) - of those anointed on the head; आचार्य (ācārya) - teacher; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; प्रमुखतः (pramukhataḥ) - in front; शूरं (śūraṃ) - heroic; भीष्मं (bhīṣmaṃ) - Bhishma; मम (mama) - my; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather;]

Behold, O teacher, the massacre of those anointed on the head, having placed my heroic grandfather Bhishma at the forefront.
तं निहत्य प्रलुब्धोऽयं शिखण्डी पूर्णमानसः। पाञ्चालैः सहितः सर्वैः सेनाग्रमभिकर्षति ॥७-१२५-११॥
taṃ nihatya pralubdho'yaṃ śikhaṇḍī pūrṇamānasaḥ। pāñcālaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ senāgramabhikarṣati ॥7-125-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; निहत्य (nihatya) - having killed; प्रलुब्धः (pralubdhaḥ) - greedy; अयम् (ayam) - this; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Shikhandi; पूर्णमानसः (pūrṇamānasaḥ) - full-minded; पाञ्चालैः (pāñcālaiḥ) - with the Panchalas; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; सेनाग्रम् (senāgram) - the army front; अभिकर्षति (abhikarṣati) - is advancing;]
(Having killed him, this greedy Shikhandi, full-minded, together with all the Panchalas, is advancing to the army front.)

अपरश्चापि दुर्धर्षः शिष्यस्ते सव्यसाचिना। अक्षौहिणीः सप्त हत्वा हतो राजा जयद्रथः ॥७-१२५-१२॥

(Another invincible disciple of yours, by Arjuna, having killed seven divisions of army, King Jayadratha was killed.)

अस्मद्विजयकामानां सुहृदामुपकारिणाम्। गन्तास्मि कथमानृण्यं गतानां यमसादनम् ॥७-१२५-१३॥
asmadvijayakāmānāṃ suhṛdāmupakāriṇām। gantāsmi kathamānṛṇyaṃ gatānāṃ yamasādanam ॥7-125-13॥
[अस्मद् (asmat) - our; विजय (vijaya) - victory; कामानां (kāmānāṃ) - desiring; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - friends; उपकारिणाम् (upakāriṇām) - benefactors; गन्तास्मि (gantāsmi) - I will go; कथम् (katham) - how; अनृण्यं (anṛṇyaṃ) - debt-free; गतानां (gatānāṃ) - departed; यम (yama) - Yama; सादनम् (sādanam) - abode;]
(How will I go debt-free to the abode of Yama, for those friends and benefactors who desired our victory?)
How can I repay the debt to those friends and benefactors who wished for our victory, now that they have departed to the abode of Yama?
ये मदर्थं परीप्सन्ति वसुधां वसुधाधिपाः। ते हित्वा वसुधैश्वर्यं वसुधामधिशेरते ॥७-१२५-१४॥
ye madarthaṁ parīpsanti vasudhāṁ vasudhādhipāḥ। te hitvā vasudhaaiśvaryaṁ vasudhāmadhiśerate ॥7-125-14॥
[ये (ye) - those who; मदर्थं (madarthaṁ) - for my sake; परीप्सन्ति (parīpsanti) - desire to obtain; वसुधां (vasudhāṁ) - the earth; वसुधाधिपाः (vasudhādhipāḥ) - the lords of the earth; ते (te) - they; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; वसुधैश्वर्यं (vasudhaaiśvaryaṁ) - earthly sovereignty; वसुधामधिशेरते (vasudhāmadhiśerate) - lie upon the earth;]
(Those who desire to obtain the earth for my sake, the lords of the earth, having abandoned earthly sovereignty, lie upon the earth.)
The kings who seek to possess the earth for my sake, after renouncing their earthly power, rest upon the earth itself.
सोऽहं कापुरुषः कृत्वा मित्राणां क्षयमीदृशम्। नाश्वमेधसहस्रेण पातुमात्मानमुत्सहे ॥७-१२५-१५॥
so'haṁ kāpuruṣaḥ kṛtvā mitrāṇāṁ kṣayamīdṛśam। nāśvamedhasahasreṇa pātumātmānamutsahe ॥7-125-15॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; कापुरुषः (kāpuruṣaḥ) - coward; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; मित्राणाम् (mitrāṇām) - of friends; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; न (na) - not; अश्वमेधसहस्रेण (aśvamedhasahasreṇa) - by a thousand horse sacrifices; पातुम् (pātum) - to atone; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(He, I, a coward, having caused such destruction of friends, am not able to atone myself by a thousand horse sacrifices.)
I, being a coward, having caused such destruction to my friends, cannot atone for myself even with a thousand horse sacrifices.
मम लुब्धस्य पापस्य तथा धर्मापचायिनः। व्यायच्छन्तो जिगीषन्तः प्राप्ता वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥७-१२५-१६॥
mama lubdhasya pāpasya tathā dharmāpacāyinaḥ। vyāyacchanto jigīṣantaḥ prāptā vaivasvatakṣayam ॥7-125-16॥
[मम (mama) - my; लुब्धस्य (lubdhasya) - greedy; पापस्य (pāpasya) - sinful; तथा (tathā) - and; धर्मापचायिनः (dharmāpacāyinaḥ) - neglecting righteousness; व्यायच्छन्तः (vyāyacchantaḥ) - striving; जिगीषन्तः (jigīṣantaḥ) - desiring to conquer; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have reached; वैवस्वतक्षयम् (vaivasvatakṣayam) - the abode of Yama;]
(My greedy, sinful, and righteousness-neglecting ones, striving and desiring to conquer, have reached the abode of Yama.)
My greedy, sinful, and unrighteous followers, in their efforts to conquer, have met their end at the abode of Yama.
कथं पतितवृत्तस्य पृथिवी सुहृदां द्रुहः। विवरं नाशकद्दातुं मम पार्थिवसंसदि ॥७-१२५-१७॥
kathaṁ patitavṛttasya pṛthivī suhṛdāṁ druhaḥ। vivaraṁ nāśakaddātuṁ mama pārthivasaṁsadi ॥7-125-17॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; पतित (patita) - fallen; वृत्तस्य (vṛttasya) - of conduct; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; सुहृदां (suhṛdāṁ) - of friends; द्रुहः (druhaḥ) - of the enemy; विवरं (vivaraṁ) - gap; न (na) - not; अशकद् (aśakad) - able; दातुं (dātuṁ) - to give; मम (mama) - my; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - royal; संसदि (saṁsadi) - assembly;]
(How could the earth, the enemy of friends, not give a gap in the assembly of my royal conduct?)

सोऽहं रुधिरसिक्ताङ्गं राज्ञां मध्ये पितामहम्। शयानं नाशकं त्रातुं भीष्ममायोधने हतम् ॥७-१२५-१८॥

(He, with his body smeared with blood, among the kings, was unable to protect grandfather Bhishma, lying slain in battle.)

तं मामनार्यपुरुषं मित्रद्रुहमधार्मिकम्। किं स वक्ष्यति दुर्धर्षः समेत्य परलोकजित् ॥७-१२५-१९॥
taṁ māmanāryapuruṣaṁ mitradruhamadhārmikam। kiṁ sa vakṣyati durdharṣaḥ sametya paralokajit ॥7-125-19॥
[तं (taṁ) - that; माम् (mām) - me; अनार्यपुरुषं (anāryapuruṣaṁ) - ignoble man; मित्रद्रुहम् (mitradruham) - betrayer of friends; अधार्मिकम् (adhārmikam) - unrighteous; किं (kiṁ) - what; सः (saḥ) - he; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - invincible; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; परलोकजित् (paralokajit) - conqueror of the other world;]
(What will that invincible, ignoble man, betrayer of friends, unrighteous, say to me, having met the conqueror of the other world?)
What will that invincible, ignoble man, who betrays friends and is unrighteous, say to me when he meets the conqueror of the other world?
जलसन्धं महेष्वासं पश्य सात्यकिना हतम्। मदर्थमुद्यतं शूरं प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा महारथम् ॥७-१२५-२०॥
jalasandhaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ paśya sātyakinā hatam। madarthamudyataṁ śūraṁ prāṇāṁstyaktvā mahāratham ॥7-125-20॥

काम्बोजं निहतं दृष्ट्वा तथालम्बुसमेव च। अन्यान्बहूंश्च सुहृदो जीवितार्थोऽद्य को मम ॥७-१२५-२१॥
kāmbojaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā tathālambusameva ca। anyānbahūṃśca suhṛdo jīvitārtho'dya ko mama ॥7-125-21॥
[काम्बोजम् (kāmbojam) - Kamboja; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथा (tathā) - and; अलम्बुसम् (alambusam) - Alambusa; एव (eva) - also; च (ca) - and; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; बहून् (bahūn) - many; च (ca) - and; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; जीवितार्थः (jīvitārthaḥ) - for the sake of life; अद्य (adya) - today; कः (kaḥ) - who; मम (mama) - my;]
(Having seen Kamboja slain and also Alambusa, and many other friends, who is there today for my sake of life?)
Upon witnessing the death of Kamboja and Alambusa, along with many other friends, who remains today for my survival?
व्यायच्छन्तो हताः शूरा मदर्थे येऽपराङ्मुखाः। यतमानाः परं शक्त्या विजेतुमहितान्मम ॥७-१२५-२२॥
vyāyacchanto hatāḥ śūrā madarthe ye'parāṅmukhāḥ। yatamānāḥ paraṃ śaktyā vijetumahitānmama ॥7-125-22॥

(Striving, the heroes who were killed for my sake, turned away. Endeavoring with utmost power to conquer my enemies.)
The heroes, striving and turning away, were killed for my sake. They endeavored with all their might to conquer my enemies.
तेषां गत्वाहमानृण्यमद्य शक्त्या परन्तप। तर्पयिष्यामि तानेव जलेन यमुनामनु ॥७-१२५-२३॥
teṣāṃ gatvāhamānaṛṇyamadya śaktyā parantapa। tarpayiṣyāmi tāneva jalena yamunāmanu ॥7-125-23॥

(Having gone, I shall satisfy them today with water along the Yamuna, O conqueror of enemies, with ability, becoming debt-free of them.)

(I promise you the truth, O best of all weapon bearers. I swear by the fulfillment of desires, by valor, and also by sons.)

निहत्य तान्रणे सर्वान्पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवैः सह। शान्तिं लब्धास्मि तेषां वा रणे गन्ता सलोकताम् ॥७-१२५-२५॥
nihatya tān raṇe sarvān pāñcālān pāṇḍavaiḥ saha। śāntiṁ labdhāsmi teṣāṁ vā raṇe gantā salokatām ॥7-125-25॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having killed; तान् (tān) - them; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Panchalas; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pandavas; सह (saha) - together; शान्तिं (śāntiṁ) - peace; लब्धास्मि (labdhāsmi) - I have obtained; तेषां (teṣāṁ) - of them; वा (vā) - or; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; गन्ता (gantā) - will go; सलोकताम् (salokatām) - to the same world;]
(Having killed them all in battle, the Panchalas along with the Pandavas, I have obtained peace, or in battle, I will go to the same world as them.)

na hīdānīṃ sahāyā me parīpsantyanupaskṛtāḥ। śreyo hi pāṇḍūnmanyante na tathāsmānmahābhuja ॥7-125-26॥

(Now, my unprepared allies do not desire (to fight). Indeed, they consider the Pandavas better, not us, O mighty-armed one.)
My allies, being unprepared, do not wish to support me now. They indeed consider the Pandavas superior to us, O mighty-armed one.
स्वयं हि मृत्युर्विहितः सत्यसन्धेन संयुगे। भवानुपेक्षां कुरुते सुशिष्यत्वाद्धनञ्जये ॥७-१२५-२७॥
svayaṃ hi mṛtyurvihitaḥ satyasandhena saṃyuge। bhavān upekṣāṃ kurute suśiṣyatvād dhanañjaye ॥7-125-27॥

(Therefore, all who desired our victory have been killed. But now I see only Karna as the seeker of our victory.)

यो हि मित्रमविज्ञाय याथातथ्येन मन्दधीः। मित्रार्थे योजयत्येनं तस्य सोऽर्थोऽवसीदति ॥७-१२५-२९॥
yo hi mitram avijñāya yāthātathyena mandadhīḥ। mitrārthe yojayaty enaṃ tasya so'rtho'vasīdati ॥7-125-29॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; अविज्ञाय (avijñāya) - without understanding; याथातथ्येन (yāthātathyena) - truly; मन्दधीः (mandadhīḥ) - foolish; मित्रार्थे (mitrārthe) - for the sake of a friend; योजयति (yojayati) - engages; एनम् (enam) - him; तस्य (tasya) - his; सः (saḥ) - that; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - perishes;]
(Who indeed, without understanding a friend truly, foolishly engages him for the sake of a friend, his purpose perishes.)
A foolish person who engages someone as a friend without truly understanding them will find that their purpose fails.
तादृग्रूपमिदं कार्यं कृतं मम सुहृद्ब्रुवैः। मोहाल्लुब्धस्य पापस्य जिह्माचारैस्ततस्ततः ॥७-१२५-३०॥
tādṛgrūpamidaṃ kāryaṃ kṛtaṃ mama suhṛdruvaiḥ। mohāllubdhasya pāpasya jihmācāraistatastataḥ ॥7-125-30॥
[तादृग् (tādṛg) - such; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; मम (mama) - my; सुहृद् (suhṛd) - friends; ब्रुवैः (bruvaiḥ) - by the words; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; लुब्धस्य (lubdhasya) - of the greedy; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of the sinful; जिह्माचारैः (jihmācāraiḥ) - by crooked actions; ततः (tataḥ) - from here; ततः (tataḥ) - to there;]
(Such a form, this action was done by my friends' words, out of delusion, of the greedy, of the sinful, by crooked actions, from here to there.)
This form of action was carried out by my friends' words, driven by delusion, greed, and sin, through deceitful actions, from one place to another.
हतो जयद्रथश्चैव सौमदत्तिश्च वीर्यवान्। अभीषाहाः शूरसेनाः शिबयोऽथ वसातयः ॥७-१२५-३१॥
hato jayadrathaścaiva saumadattiśca vīryavān। abhīṣāhāḥ śūrasenāḥ śibayo'tha vasātayaḥ ॥7-125-31॥

सोऽहमद्य गमिष्यामि यत्र ते पुरुषर्षभाः। हता मदर्थं सङ्ग्रामे युध्यमानाः किरीटिना ॥७-१२५-३२॥
so'hamadya gamiṣyāmi yatra te puruṣarṣabhāḥ। hatā madarthaṃ saṅgrāme yudhyamānāḥ kirīṭinā ॥7-125-32॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - will go; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - those; पुरुषर्षभाः (puruṣarṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men; हता (hatā) - slain; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my sake; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by Arjuna;]
(He, I, today will go where those bulls among men, slain for my sake in battle, fighting by Arjuna.)
Today, I will go to the place where those noble warriors, who were fighting for my sake, have been slain by Arjuna in battle.
न हि मे जीवितेनार्थस्तानृते पुरुषर्षभान्। आचार्यः पाण्डुपुत्राणामनुजानातु नो भवान् ॥७-१२५-३३॥
na hi me jīvitena arthas tānṛte puruṣarṣabhān। ācāryaḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām anujānātu no bhavān ॥7-125-33॥

(There is no purpose for me in life without them, the bulls among men. May you, the teacher of the sons of Pandu, permit us.)
