Pancharatra and Core: Then King Duryodhana, provoked by Drona, succumbed to his anger and resolved to continue the fight.

tato duryodhano rājā droṇenaivaṃ pracoditaḥ। amarṣavaśamāpanno yuddhāyaiva mano dadhe ॥7-127-1॥

अब्रवीच्च तदा कर्णं पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव। पश्य कृष्णसहायेन पाण्डवेन किरीटिना ॥ आचार्यविहितं व्यूहं भिन्नं देवैः सुदुर्भिदम् ॥७-१२७-२॥

(Then your son Duryodhana said to Karna, "See, the formation arranged by the teacher, which was very difficult to penetrate even by the gods, has been broken by the Pandava with Krishna's help, by the crowned one.")
Then Duryodhana, your son, said to Karna, "Look, the formation set by the teacher, which even the gods found hard to breach, has been shattered by the Pandava with Krishna's assistance, by the one with the crown."
तव व्यायच्छमानस्य द्रोणस्य च महात्मनः। मिषतां योधमुख्यानां सैन्धवो विनिपातितः ॥७-१२७-३॥
tava vyāyacchamānasya droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ। miṣatāṃ yodhamukhyānāṃ saindhavo vinipātitaḥ ॥7-127-3॥
[तव (tava) - your; व्यास्यच्छमानस्य (vyāyacchamānasya) - struggling; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Droṇa; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great soul; मिषतां (miṣatāṃ) - in the presence; योधमुख्यानां (yodhamukhyānāṃ) - of the chief warriors; सैन्धवः (saindhavaḥ) - the Sindhu prince; विनिपातितः (vinipātitaḥ) - was slain;]
(Your struggling, and of Droṇa, the great soul, in the presence of the chief warriors, the Sindhu prince was slain.)
While you and the great soul Droṇa were struggling, the Sindhu prince was slain in the presence of the chief warriors.
पश्य राधेय राजानः पृथिव्यां प्रवरा युधि। पार्थेनैकेन निहताः सिंहेनेवेतरा मृगाः ॥७-१२७-४॥
paśya rādheya rājānaḥ pṛthivyāṃ pravarā yudhi। pārthenaikena nihatāḥ siṃhenevetarā mṛgāḥ ॥7-127-4॥

(See, O son of Radha, the kings, the best on earth, slain in battle by Arjuna alone, like other animals by the lion.)
Behold, O son of Radha, the kings who were the best on earth have been slain in battle by Arjuna alone, just as other animals are by a lion.
मम व्यायच्छमानस्य समरे शत्रुसूदन। अल्पावशेषं सैन्यं मे कृतं शक्रात्मजेन ह ॥७-१२७-५॥
mama vyāyacchamānasya samare śatrusūdana। alpāvaśeṣaṃ sainyaṃ me kṛtaṃ śakrātmajena ha ॥7-127-5॥

(My army, engaged in fighting in battle, O enemy-slayer, has been made little remaining by Indra's son, indeed.)

कथं ह्यनिच्छमानस्य द्रोणस्य युधि फल्गुनः। भिन्द्यात्सुदुर्भिदं व्यूहं यतमानोऽपि संयुगे ॥७-१२७-६॥
kathaṁ hy anicchamānasya droṇasya yudhi phalgunaḥ। bhindyāt sudurbhidaṁ vyūhaṁ yatamāno'pi saṁyuge ॥7-127-6॥
[कथं (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अनिच्छमानस्य (anicchamānasya) - of the unwilling; द्रोणस्य (droṇasya) - of Drona; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Arjuna; भिन्द्यात् (bhindyāt) - could pierce; सुदुर्भिदम् (sudurbhidam) - very difficult to penetrate; व्यूहम् (vyūham) - formation; यतमानः (yatamānaḥ) - striving; अपि (api) - even; संयुगे (saṁyuge) - in battle;]
(How indeed could Arjuna, even while striving, pierce the very difficult to penetrate formation of Drona in battle?)
How could Arjuna, even if he tried, break through Drona's formidable battle formation?
प्रियो हि फल्गुनो नित्यमाचार्यस्य महात्मनः। ततोऽस्य दत्तवान्द्वारं नयुद्धेनारिमर्दन ॥७-१२७-७॥
priyo hi phalguno nityamācāryasya mahātmanaḥ। tato'sya dattavāndvāraṃ nayuddhenārimardana ॥7-127-7॥

(Arjuna was indeed always dear to the great-souled teacher. Therefore, he gave him access, not by fighting, O destroyer of enemies.)

यद्यदास्यमनुज्ञां वै पूर्वमेव गृहान्प्रति। सिन्धुराजस्य समरे नाभविष्यज्जनक्षयः ॥७-१२७-९॥
yadyadāsyamanujñāṃ vai pūrvameva gṛhānprati। sindhurājasya samare nābhaviṣyajjanakṣayaḥ ॥7-127-9॥
[यद्यद् (yadyad) - whatever; आस्य (āsya) - face; अनुज्ञां (anujñāṃ) - permission; वै (vai) - indeed; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - only; गृहान् (gṛhān) - home; प्रति (prati) - towards; सिन्धुराजस्य (sindhurājasya) - of the king of Sindhu; समरे (samare) - in battle; न (na) - not; अभविष्यत् (abhaviṣyat) - would have been; जनक्षयः (janakṣayaḥ) - destruction of people;]
(Whatever permission would have been given before towards home, indeed, of the king of Sindhu in battle, there would not have been destruction of people.)
If any permission had been given earlier to return home, there would not have been the destruction of people in the battle of the king of Sindhu.
जयद्रथो जीवितार्थी गच्छमानो गृहान्प्रति। मयानार्येण संरुद्धो द्रोणात्प्राप्याभयं रणे ॥७-१२७-१०॥
jayadratho jīvitārthī gacchamāno gṛhānprati। mayānāryeṇa saṃruddho droṇātprāpyābhayaṃ raṇe ॥7-127-10॥
[जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; जीवितार्थी (jīvitārthī) - desiring life; गच्छमानः (gacchamānaḥ) - going; गृहान् (gṛhān) - home; प्रति (prati) - towards; मया (mayā) - by me; अनार्येण (anāryeṇa) - by an ignoble person; संरुद्धः (saṃruddhaḥ) - obstructed; द्रोणात् (droṇāt) - from Drona; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; अभयम् (abhayam) - safety; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Jayadratha, desiring life, going towards home, was obstructed by me, an ignoble person, having obtained safety from Drona in battle.)

(Today my brothers, weakened, Citraseṇa and others in battle, having encountered Bhīmasena, let them see our evil-minded ones.)
Today, my brothers, including Citraseṇa, have been weakened in battle. Having encountered Bhīmasena, let our evil-minded ones witness this.

आचार्यं मा विगर्हस्व शक्त्या युध्यत्यसौ द्विजः। अजय्यान्पाण्डवान्मन्ये द्रोणेनास्त्रविदा मृधे ॥७-१२७-१२॥
ācāryaṃ mā vigarhasva śaktyā yudhyatyasau dvijaḥ। ajayyānpāṇḍavānmanye droṇenāstravidā mṛdhe ॥7-127-12॥
[आचार्यम् (ācāryam) - teacher; मा (mā) - do not; विगर्हस्व (vigarhasva) - disparage; शक्त्या (śaktyā) - with power; युध्यति (yudhyati) - fights; असौ (asau) - this; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - Brahmin; अजय्यान् (ajayyān) - invincible; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pāṇḍavas; मन्ये (manye) - I think; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; अस्त्रविदा (astravidā) - by the expert in weapons; मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle;]
(Do not disparage the teacher; this Brahmin fights with power. I think the invincible Pāṇḍavas are being fought by Droṇa, the expert in weapons, in battle.)

तथा ह्येनमतिक्रम्य प्रविष्टः श्वेतवाहनः। दैवदृष्टोऽन्यथाभावो न मन्ये विद्यते क्वचित् ॥७-१२७-१३॥
tathā hy enam atikramya praviṣṭaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ। daivadṛṣṭo'nyathābhāvo na manye vidyate kvacit ॥7-127-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - this; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having transgressed; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered; श्वेतवाहनः (śvetavāhanaḥ) - Śvetavāhana; दैवदृष्टः (daivadṛṣṭaḥ) - fate-seen; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - state; न (na) - not; मन्ये (manye) - I think; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(Thus indeed, having transgressed this, Śvetavāhana entered. I think there is no other state seen by fate anywhere.)

[परम् (param) - supreme; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; कुर्वताम् (kurvatām) - of those doing; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - in the battlefield; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness; हि (hi) - indeed; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; पश्चात्करोति (paścātkaroti) - follows; नः (naḥ) - us; सततम् (satatam) - constantly; चेष्टमानानाम् (ceṣṭamānānām) - of those striving; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; विक्रमेण (vikrameṇa) - by valor; च (ca) - and;]
(Supreme effort is made by those doing, together with you in the battlefield. Having killed, indeed, our manliness, fate follows us constantly, of those striving by deceit and by valor.)
Supreme effort is made by those who fight alongside you in the battlefield. After our manliness is demonstrated by killing, fate indeed follows us, constantly striving through deceit and valor.
दैवोपसृष्टः पुरुषो यत्कर्म कुरुते क्वचित्। कृतं कृतं स्म तत्तस्य दैवेन विनिहन्यते ॥७-१२७-१६॥
daivopasṛṣṭaḥ puruṣo yatkarma kurute kvacit। kṛtaṃ kṛtaṃ sma tattasya daivena vinihanyate ॥7-127-16॥
[दैवोपसृष्टः (daivopasṛṣṭaḥ) - fated; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; यत् (yat) - which; कर्म (karma) - action; कुरुते (kurute) - does; क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; स्म (sma) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - his; दैवेन (daivena) - by fate; विनिहन्यते (vinihanyate) - is destroyed;]
(The man fated, whatever action he does somewhere, indeed that done, done is destroyed by fate.)
A man who is destined by fate, whatever action he performs anywhere, that action, indeed, is ultimately nullified by fate.
यत्कर्तव्यं मनुष्येण व्यवसायवता सता। तत्कार्यमविशङ्केन सिद्धिर्दैवे प्रतिष्ठिता ॥७-१२७-१७॥
yatkartavyaṃ manuṣyeṇa vyavasāyavatā satā। tatkāryamaviśaṅkena siddhirdaive pratiṣṭhitā ॥7-127-17॥
[यत् (yat) - what; कर्तव्यं (kartavyaṃ) - to be done; मनुष्येण (manuṣyeṇa) - by a person; व्यवसायवता (vyavasāyavatā) - with determination; सता (satā) - with truth; तत् (tat) - that; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; अविशङ्केन (aviśaṅkena) - without doubt; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - success; दैवे (daive) - in divine; प्रतिष्ठिता (pratiṣṭhitā) - established;]
(What is to be done by a person with determination and truth, that action without doubt, success is established in divine.)
Whatever a person with determination and truth must do, that action should be performed without doubt, as success is established in the divine.
निकृत्या निकृताः पार्था विषयोगैश्च भारत। दग्धा जतुगृहे चापि द्यूतेन च पराजिताः ॥७-१२७-१८॥
nikṛtyā nikṛtāḥ pārthā viṣayogaiśca bhārata। dagdhā jatugṛhe cāpi dyūtena ca parājitāḥ ॥7-127-18॥
[निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; निकृताः (nikṛtāḥ) - deceived; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - sons of Pṛthā; विषयोगैः (viṣayogaiḥ) - with poison; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; दग्धाः (dagdhāḥ) - burned; जतुगृहे (jatugṛhe) - in the house of lac; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; द्यूतेन (dyūtena) - by gambling; च (ca) - and; पराजिताः (parājitāḥ) - defeated;]
(By deceit, the sons of Pṛthā were deceived, O Bhārata, with poison and burned in the house of lac, and also defeated by gambling.)

[राजनीतिं (rājanītiṃ) - politics; व्यपाश्रित्य (vyapāśritya) - resorting to; प्रहिताः (prahitāḥ) - sent; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; काननम् (kānanam) - forest; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; च (ca) - and; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; यत् (yat) - which; ते (te) - your; दैवेन (daivena) - by fate; विनिपातितम् (vinipātitam) - destroyed;]
(Resorting to politics, indeed sent to the forest, with effort what was done by you, was destroyed by fate.)
Relying on political strategy, you were sent to the forest, and despite your efforts, what you accomplished was undone by fate.
युध्यस्व यत्नमास्थाय मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम्। यततस्तव तेषां च दैवं मार्गेण यास्यति ॥७-१२७-२०॥
yudhyasva yatnam āsthāya mṛtyuṃ kṛtvā nivartanam। yatatas tava teṣāṃ ca daivaṃ mārgeṇa yāsyati ॥7-127-20॥
[युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having undertaken; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निवर्तनम् (nivartanam) - retreat; यततः (yatataḥ) - of the striving; तव (tava) - your; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; च (ca) - and; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; मार्गेण (mārgeṇa) - by the path; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go;]
(Fight, having undertaken effort, making death a retreat. Of the striving, your and their fate will go by the path.)
Engage in battle with determination, considering death as a form of retreat. For both your efforts and theirs, destiny will follow its course.
न तेषां मतिपूर्वं हि सुकृतं दृश्यते क्वचित्। दुष्कृतं तव वा वीर बुद्ध्या हीनं कुरूद्वह ॥७-१२७-२१॥
na teṣāṃ matipūrvaṃ hi sukṛtaṃ dṛśyate kvacit। duṣkṛtaṃ tava vā vīra buddhyā hīnaṃ kurūdvaha ॥7-127-21॥

(Not indeed is their good deed seen anywhere; or your bad deed, O hero, devoid of wisdom, descendant of Kuru.)
Their good deeds are never seen, nor are your bad deeds, O hero, lacking wisdom, descendant of Kuru.
दैवं प्रमाणं सर्वस्य सुकृतस्येतरस्य वा। अनन्यकर्म दैवं हि जागर्ति स्वपतामपि ॥७-१२७-२२॥
daivaṁ pramāṇaṁ sarvasya sukṛtasyetarasya vā। ananyakarma daivaṁ hi jāgarti svapatāmapi ॥7-127-22॥
[दैवं (daivam) - divine; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; सुकृतस्य (sukṛtasya) - of good deeds; इतरस्य (itarasya) - of others; वा (vā) - or; अनन्यकर्म (ananyakarma) - exclusive action; दैवं (daivam) - divine; हि (hi) - indeed; जागर्ति (jāgarti) - awakens; स्वपताम् (svapatām) - of those who sleep; अपि (api) - even;]
(Divine is the authority of all, whether of good deeds or others. Indeed, the divine awakens even in those who sleep.)
The divine authority governs all actions, whether they are good or otherwise. Even in those who are asleep, the divine influence is present.
बहूनि तव सैन्यानि योधाश्च बहवस्तथा। न तथा पाण्डुपुत्राणामेवं युद्धमवर्तत ॥७-१२७-२३॥
bahūni tava sainyāni yodhāśca bahavastathā। na tathā pāṇḍuputrāṇāmevaṃ yuddhamavartata ॥7-127-23॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; तव (tava) - your; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - numerous; तथा (tathā) - thus; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pandu; एवम् (evam) - in this way; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अवर्तत (avartata) - occurred;]
(Many were your armies and numerous were the warriors. Not so of the sons of Pandu, thus the battle occurred.)
Your armies and warriors were many and numerous, unlike those of the sons of Pandu, and thus the battle unfolded.
तैरल्पैर्बहवो यूयं क्षयं नीताः प्रहारिणः। शङ्के दैवस्य तत्कर्म पौरुषं येन नाशितम् ॥७-१२७-२४॥
tairalpairbahavo yūyaṃ kṣayaṃ nītāḥ prahāriṇaḥ। śaṅke daivasya tatkarma pauruṣaṃ yena nāśitam ॥7-127-24॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; अल्पैः (alpaiḥ) - few; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; यूयम् (yūyam) - you; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; नीताः (nītāḥ) - led; प्रहारिणः (prahāriṇaḥ) - strikers; शङ्के (śaṅke) - I suspect; दैवस्य (daivasya) - of fate; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - action; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manly effort; येन (yena) - by which; नाशितम् (nāśitam) - destroyed;]
(By them, though few, you many strikers were led to destruction. I suspect it is the work of fate by which manly effort was destroyed.)
Though you were many and they were few, you were led to destruction by them. I suspect that it was the work of fate that destroyed manly effort.

(Thus, while conversing, many various kings and the armies of the Pandavas were seen in the battle.)

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपम्। तावकानां परैः सार्धं राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥७-१२७-२६॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ vyatiṣaktarathadvipam। tāvakānāṃ paraiḥ sārdhaṃ rājandurmantrite tava ॥7-127-26॥

(Then commenced the battle with interlocked chariots and elephants, of your side together with the enemies, O king, due to your ill-advised actions.)
