Core and Pancharatra: Yudhishthira and Bhimasena come to the rescue and repel the attack by Ashwatthama. When Drona comes to his rescue, Arjuna fights him, making the Kaurava army to retreat.
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
ततो युधिष्ठिरश्चैव भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः। द्रोणपुत्रं महाराज समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥७-१३६-१॥
Then Yudhishthira and Bhimasena, the Pandavas, surrounded Ashwatthama, the son of Drona, from all sides, O great king.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा भारद्वाजेन संवृतः। अभ्ययात्पाण्डवान्सङ्ख्ये ततो युद्धमवर्तत ॥ घोररूपं महाराज भीरूणां भयवर्धनम् ॥७-१३६-२॥
Then King Duryodhana, accompanied by Bharadvaja, advanced towards the Pandavas in the battlefield. The battle that followed was terrifying, O great king, and it heightened the fear among the timid.
अम्बष्ठान्मालवान्वङ्गाञ्शिबींस्त्रैगर्तकानपि। प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय गणान्क्रुद्धो युधिष्ठिरः ॥७-१३६-३॥
In his anger, Yudhishthira sent the troops of the Ambashthas, Malavas, Vangas, Shibis, and Trigartas to the realm of death.
अभीषाहाञ्शूरसेनान्क्षत्रियान्युद्धदुर्मदान्। निकृत्य पृथिवीं चक्रे भीमः शोणितकर्दमाम् ॥७-१३६-४॥
Bhima defeated the fierce and arrogant Shurasena Kshatriyas in battle, leaving the earth soaked with blood.
यौधेयारट्टराजन्यान्मद्रकांश्च गणान्युधि। प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय किरीटी निशितैः शरैः ॥७-१३६-५॥
The crowned warrior dispatched the Yaudheyas, Arattas, Kshatriyas, Madras, and other tribes to the realm of death using his sharp arrows in the battle.
प्रगाढमञ्जोगतिभिर्नाराचैरभिपीडिताः। निपेतुर्द्विरदा भूमौ द्विशृङ्गा इव पर्वताः ॥७-१३६-६॥
The elephants, oppressed by the deeply graceful movements of the arrows, fell to the ground like two-peaked mountains.
निकृत्तैर्हस्तिहस्तैश्च लुठमानैस्ततस्ततः। रराज वसुधा कीर्णा विसर्पद्भिरिवोरगैः ॥७-१३६-७॥
The battlefield was a gruesome sight, with the earth appearing to shine as it was covered with severed elephant trunks rolling around, resembling crawling snakes.
क्षिप्तैः कनकचित्रैश्च नृपच्छत्रैः क्षितिर्बभौ। द्यौरिवादित्यचन्द्राद्यैर्ग्रहैः कीर्णा युगक्षये ॥७-१३६-८॥
The earth was adorned with royal umbrellas, beautifully decorated with gold and colors, resembling the sky filled with celestial bodies like the sun, moon, and planets at the end of an era.
हत प्रहरताभीता विध्यत व्यवकृन्तत। इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दः शोणाश्वस्य रथं प्रति ॥७-१३६-९॥
There was a tumultuous sound as they killed, struck in fear, pierced, and cut towards the chariot of Shonashva.
द्रोणस्तु परमक्रुद्धो वायव्यास्त्रेण संयुगे। व्यधमत्तान्यथा वायुर्मेघानिव दुरत्ययः ॥७-१३६-१०॥
Drona, in his extreme anger, used the wind weapon in battle to scatter them as the unstoppable wind scatters clouds.
ते हन्यमाना द्रोणेन पाञ्चालाः प्राद्रवन्भयात्। पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य पार्थस्य च महात्मनः ॥७-१३६-११॥
The Pāñcālas, struck with fear and being slain by Droṇa, fled while being observed by the noble Bhīmasena and Arjuna.
ततः किरीटी भीमश्च सहसा संन्यवर्तताम्। महता रथवंशेन परिगृह्य बलं तव ॥७-१३६-१२॥
Then Arjuna and Bhima, with a great chariot division, suddenly turned back and surrounded your army.
बीभत्सुर्दक्षिणं पार्श्वमुत्तरं तु वृकोदरः। भारद्वाजं शरौघाभ्यां महद्भ्यामभ्यवर्षताम् ॥७-१३६-१३॥
Bībhatsu attacked from the right, while Vṛkodara unleashed a great volley of arrows upon Bhāradvāja.
तौ तदा सृञ्जयाश्चैव पाञ्चालाश्च महारथाः। अन्वगच्छन्महाराज मत्स्याश्च सह सोमकैः ॥७-१३६-१४॥
Then the Sṛñjayas, Pāñcālas, and the great charioteers followed the Matsyas along with the Somakas, O great king.
तथैव तव पुत्रस्य रथोदाराः प्रहारिणः। महत्या सेनया सार्धं जग्मुर्द्रोणरथं प्रति ॥७-१३६-१५॥
Similarly, the chariot warriors and strikers of your son, accompanied by a large army, advanced towards Drona's chariot.
ततः सा भरती सेना वध्यमाना किरीटिना। तमसा निद्रया चैव पुनरेव व्यदीर्यत ॥७-१३६-१६॥
Then, that army of Bharata, being slaughtered by Arjuna, was once again scattered by the forces of darkness and sleep.
द्रोणेन वार्यमाणास्ते स्वयं तव सुतेन च। न शक्यन्ते महाराज योधा वारयितुं तदा ॥७-१३६-१७॥
O great king, despite being restrained by Drona and your son, the warriors could not be stopped at that time.
सा पाण्डुपुत्रस्य शरैर्दार्यमाणा महाचमूः। तमसा संवृते लोके व्यद्रवत्सर्वतोमुखी ॥७-१३६-१८॥
The great army of the Pandavas, pierced by arrows, fled in all directions as the world was enveloped in darkness.
उत्सृज्य शतशो वाहांस्तत्र केचिन्नराधिपाः। प्राद्रवन्त महाराज भयाविष्टाः समन्ततः ॥७-१३६-१९॥
O great king, some kings, having abandoned hundreds of vehicles there, fled in all directions, overcome by fear.
