ते यूयं सहिताः सर्वे भृशं यत्ता महारथाः। द्रोणं रक्षत पाञ्चाल्याद्धृष्टद्युम्नान्महारथात् ॥७-१३९-२२॥
te yūyaṃ sahitāḥ sarve bhṛśaṃ yattā mahārathāḥ। droṇaṃ rakṣata pāñcālyāddhṛṣṭadyumnānmahārathāt ॥7-139-22॥
[ते (te) - they; यूयम् (yūyam) - you all; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very much; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - attentive; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; रक्षत (rakṣata) - protect; पाञ्चाल्यात् (pāñcālyāt) - from the Pāñcāla; धृष्टद्युम्नात् (dhṛṣṭadyumnāt) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; महारथात् (mahārathāt) - great warrior;]
(They, you all, together, all very much attentive great warriors, protect Droṇa from the Pāñcāla Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great warrior.)
All of you, being united and very attentive great warriors, protect Droṇa from the great warrior Dhṛṣṭadyumna of the Pāñcāla clan.
पाण्डवेयेषु सैन्येषु योधं पश्याम्यहं न तम्। यो जयेत रणे द्रोणं धृष्टद्युम्नादृते नृपाः ॥७-१३९-२३॥
pāṇḍaveyeṣu sainyeṣu yodhaṃ paśyāmyahaṃ na tam। yo jayet raṇe droṇaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnādṛte nṛpāḥ ॥7-139-23॥
[पाण्डवेयेषु (pāṇḍaveyeṣu) - among the Pandavas; सैन्येषु (sainyeṣu) - in the armies; योधं (yodhaṃ) - warrior; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; तम् (tam) - him; यः (yaḥ) - who; जयेत (jayet) - can conquer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; द्रोणं (droṇam) - Drona; धृष्टद्युम्नादृते (dhṛṣṭadyumnādṛte) - except Dhrishtadyumna; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings;]
(Among the Pandavas' armies, I see no warrior who can conquer Drona in battle, except Dhrishtadyumna, O kings.)
In the armies of the Pandavas, I see no warrior who can defeat Drona in battle, except for Dhrishtadyumna, O kings.
तस्य सर्वात्मना मन्ये भारद्वाजस्य रक्षणम्। स गुप्तः सोमकान्हन्यात्सृञ्जयांश्च सराजकान् ॥७-१३९-२४॥
tasya sarvātmanaā manye bhāradvājasya rakṣaṇam। sa guptaḥ somakānhanyātsṛñjayāṃśca sarājakān ॥7-139-24॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanaā) - with all soul; मन् (manye) - I think; भारद्वाजस्य (bhāradvājasya) - of Bharadvaja; रक्षणम् (rakṣaṇam) - protection; सः (saḥ) - he; गुप्तः (guptaḥ) - protected; सोमकान् (somakān) - Somakas; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; सृञ्जयान् (sṛñjayān) - Srinjayas; च (ca) - and; सराजकान् (sarājakān) - along with kings;]
(I think with all soul of Bharadvaja's protection. He, protected, would kill the Somakas, the Srinjayas, and the kings.)
I believe wholeheartedly in the protection of Bharadvaja. With his protection, he would be able to defeat the Somakas, the Srinjayas, and their kings.
सृञ्जयेष्वथ सर्वेषु निहतेषु चमूमुखे। धृष्टद्युम्नं रणे द्रौणिर्नाशयिष्यत्यसंशयम् ॥७-१३९-२५॥
sṛñjayeṣvatha sarveṣu nihateṣu camūmukhe। dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ raṇe drauṇirnāśayiṣyatyasaṃśayam ॥7-139-25॥
[सृञ्जयेषु (sṛñjayeṣu) - among the Sṛñjayas; अथ (atha) - then; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - all; निहतेषु (nihateṣu) - slain; चमूमुखे (camūmukhe) - in the front of the army; धृष्टद्युम्नं (dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Aśvatthāmā; नाशयिष्यति (nāśayiṣyati) - will destroy; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Among the Sṛñjayas, then, when all are slain in the front of the army, Dhṛṣṭadyumna will be destroyed in battle by Aśvatthāmā, without doubt.)
Then, among the Sṛñjayas, when all have been slain at the front of the army, Aśvatthāmā will undoubtedly destroy Dhṛṣṭadyumna in battle.
तथार्जुनं रणे कर्णो विजेष्यति महारथः। भीमसेनमहं चापि युद्धे जेष्यामि दंशितः ॥७-१३९-२६॥
tathārjunaṃ raṇe karṇo vijeṣyati mahārathaḥ। bhīmasenamahaṃ cāpi yuddhe jeṣyāmi daṃśitaḥ ॥7-139-26॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; विजेष्यति (vijeṣyati) - will conquer; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - great warrior; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; जेष्यामि (jeṣyāmi) - will win; दंशितः (daṃśitaḥ) - determined;]
(Thus, in battle, Karna, the great warrior, will conquer Arjuna. I, determined, will also win against Bhimasena in battle.)
Thus, Karna, the great warrior, will defeat Arjuna in battle. I, too, with determination, will overcome Bhimasena in the fight.
सोऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं दीर्घकालं भविष्यति। तस्माद्रक्षत सङ्ग्रामे द्रोणमेव महारथाः ॥७-१३९-२७॥
so'yaṁ mama jayo vyaktaṁ dīrghakālaṁ bhaviṣyati। tasmādrakṣata saṅgrāme droṇameva mahārathāḥ ॥7-139-27॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - manifest; दीर्घकालम् (dīrghakālam) - long time; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; रक्षत (rakṣata) - protect; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; द्रोणम् (droṇam) - Droṇa; एव (eva) - only; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors;]
(He, this my victory, manifest for a long time will be. Therefore, protect in battle Droṇa only, O great warriors.)
"This victory of mine will be evident for a long time. Therefore, O great warriors, protect Droṇa alone in the battle."
इत्युक्त्वा भरतश्रेष्ठ पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव। व्यादिदेश ततः सैन्यं तस्मिंस्तमसि दारुणे ॥७-१३९-२८॥
ityuktvā bharataśreṣṭha putro duryodhanastava। vyādideśa tataḥ sainyaṃ tasmiṃstamasi dāruṇe ॥7-139-28॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; भरत (bharata) - Bharata; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तव (tava) - your; व्यादिदेश (vyādideśa) - ordered; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तमसि (tamasi) - darkness; दारुणे (dāruṇe) - terrible;]
(Thus having spoken, your son Duryodhana, the best of the Bharatas, then ordered the army in that terrible darkness.)
After speaking thus, your son Duryodhana, the best among the Bharatas, commanded the army amidst the dreadful darkness.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं रात्रौ तद्भरतर्षभ। उभयोः सेनयोर्घोरं विजयं प्रति काङ्क्षिणोः ॥७-१३९-२९॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ rātrau tadbharatarṣabhaḥ। ubhayoḥ senayorghoraṃ vijayaṃ prati kāṅkṣiṇoḥ ॥7-139-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रववृते (pravavṛte) - commenced; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; तद्भरतर्षभ (tadbharatarṣabhaḥ) - O bull among the Bharatas; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; सेनयोः (senayoḥ) - armies; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; विजयं (vijayaṃ) - victory; प्रति (prati) - for; काङ्क्षिणोः (kāṅkṣiṇoḥ) - desiring;]
(Then commenced the battle at night, O bull among the Bharatas, between both armies, terrible, desiring victory.)
Then, O bull among the Bharatas, a terrible battle commenced at night between both armies, each desiring victory.
अर्जुनः कौरवं सैन्यमर्जुनं चापि कौरवाः। नानाशस्त्रसमावापैरन्योन्यं पर्यपीडयन् ॥७-१३९-३०॥
arjunaḥ kauravaṃ sainyam arjunaṃ cāpi kauravāḥ। nānāśastrasamāvāpair anyonyaṃ paryapīḍayan ॥7-139-30॥
[अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; कौरवं (kauravam) - Kaurava; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - Kauravas; नानाशस्त्रसमावापैः (nānāśastrasamāvāpaiḥ) - with various weapons; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; पर्यपीडयन् (paryapīḍayan) - tormented;]
(Arjuna and the Kauravas' army, and also the Kauravas, tormented each other with various weapons.)
Arjuna and the Kauravas' army, along with the Kauravas, engaged in fierce battle, tormenting each other with a variety of weapons.
द्रौणिः पाञ्चालराजानं भारद्वाजश्च सृञ्जयान्। छादयामासतुः सङ्ख्ये शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥७-१३९-३१॥
drauṇiḥ pāñcālarājānaṃ bhāradvājaśca sṛñjayān। chādayāmāsatuḥ saṅkhye śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ॥7-139-31॥
[द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drona's son; पाञ्चालराजानं (pāñcālarājānaṃ) - the king of the Panchalas; भारद्वाजः (bhāradvājaḥ) - Bharadvaja's son; च (ca) - and; सृञ्जयान् (sṛñjayān) - the Srinjayas; छादयामासतुः (chādayāmāsatuḥ) - covered; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the battle; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; संनतपर्वभिः (saṃnataparvabhiḥ) - having bent joints;]

pāṇḍupāñcālasenānāṃ kauravāṇāṃ ca māriṣa। āsīnniṣṭānako ghoro nighnatāmitaretaram ॥7-139-32॥
[पाण्डु (pāṇḍu) - of the Pandavas; पाञ्चाल (pāñcāla) - of the Panchalas; सेनानाम् (senānām) - of the armies; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; मारिष (māriṣa) - O sir; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; निष्टानकः (niṣṭānakaḥ) - a tumultuous sound; घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; निघ्नताम् (nighnatām) - of those striking; इतरेतरम् (itaretaram) - each other;]
(O sir, there was a terrible tumultuous sound of the armies of the Pandavas, Panchalas, and Kauravas striking each other.)
O sir, a dreadful tumult arose from the armies of the Pandavas, Panchalas, and Kauravas as they clashed with one another.
नैवास्माभिर्न पूर्वैर्नो दृष्टं पूर्वं तथाविधम्। युद्धं यादृशमेवासीत्तां रात्रिं सुमहाभयम् ॥७-१३९-३३॥
naivāsmābhirna pūrvairno dṛṣṭaṃ pūrvaṃ tathāvidham। yuddhaṃ yādṛśamevāsīttāṃ rātriṃ sumahābhayam ॥7-139-33॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; न (na) - not; पूर्वैः (pūrvaiḥ) - by the ancestors; न (na) - not; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; तथाविधम् (tathāvidham) - such; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; यादृशम् (yādṛśam) - like this; एव (eva) - indeed; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; ताम् (tām) - that; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; सुमहाभयम् (sumahābhayam) - very terrifying;]
(Not indeed by us, nor by the ancestors, was seen before such a battle like this indeed was that night very terrifying.)
Neither we nor our ancestors have ever seen such a terrifying battle as that night.
