नारायणाय मे पित्रा प्रणम्य विधिपूर्वकम्। उपहारः पुरा दत्तो ब्रह्मरूप उपस्थिते ॥७-१६६-४३॥
nārāyaṇāya me pitrā praṇamya vidhipūrvakam। upahāraḥ purā datto brahmarūpa upasthite ॥7-166-43॥

तं स्वयं प्रतिगृह्याथ भगवान्स वरं ददौ। वव्रे पिता मे परममस्त्रं नारायणं ततः ॥७-१६६-४४॥

अथैनमब्रवीद्राजन्भगवान्देवसत्तमः। भविता त्वत्समो नान्यः कश्चिद्युधि नरः क्वचित् ॥७-१६६-४५॥

(Then the divine, best of the gods, said to him, O king: "There will be no other man equal to you anywhere in battle.")
Then the divine sage, best among the gods, addressed the king, saying that there will be no man equal to him in battle anywhere.
न त्विदं सहसा ब्रह्मन्प्रयोक्तव्यं कथञ्चन। न ह्येतदस्त्रमन्यत्र वधाच्छत्रोर्निवर्तते ॥७-१६६-४६॥
na tvidaṃ sahasā brahmanprayoktavyaṃ kathaṃcana। na hyetadastramanyatra vadhācchatronnivartate ॥7-166-46॥

(But this should not be used hastily, O Brahman, in any way. For this weapon does not turn back elsewhere than from the killing of enemies.)
"O Brahman, this weapon should never be used hastily or in any other way, as it will not retract except in the destruction of enemies."
न चैतच्छक्यते ज्ञातुं को न वध्येदिति प्रभो। अवध्यमपि हन्याद्धि तस्मान्नैतत्प्रयोजयेत् ॥७-१६६-४७॥
na caitacchakya te jñātuṃ ko na vadhyediti prabho। avadhyamapi hanyāddhi tasmānnaitatprayojayet ॥7-166-47॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; कः (kaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; वध्येत् (vadhyet) - would be killed; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अवध्यम् (avadhyam) - the invincible; अपि (api) - even; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रयोजयेत् (prayojayet) - should employ;]
(And it is not possible to know, O lord, who would not be killed. Indeed, even the invincible would be killed; therefore, this should not be employed.)
O lord, it is impossible to determine who would not be killed, as even the invincible can be slain. Therefore, this should not be used.
वधः सङ्ख्ये द्रवश्चैव शस्त्राणां च विसर्जनम्। प्रयाचनं च शत्रूणां गमनं शरणस्य च ॥७-१६६-४८॥
vadhaḥ saṅkhye dravaścaiva śastrāṇāṃ ca visarjanam। prayācanaṃ ca śatrūṇāṃ gamanaṃ śaraṇasya ca ॥7-166-48॥

(Killing in battle, flight, abandonment of weapons, begging of enemies, and going to refuge.)
In battle, killing, fleeing, abandoning weapons, begging from enemies, and seeking refuge are described.
एते प्रशमने योगा महास्त्रस्य परन्तप। सर्वथा पीडितो हि स्यादवध्यान्पीडयन्रणे ॥७-१६६-४९॥

(These are the methods for pacifying the great weapon, O scorcher of foes. Indeed, in every way, one may be afflicted by afflicting the invincible in battle.)

तज्जग्राह पिता मह्यमब्रवीच्चैव स प्रभुः। त्वं वर्षिष्यसि दिव्यानि शस्त्रवर्षाण्यनेकशः ॥ अनेनास्त्रेण सङ्ग्रामे तेजसा च ज्वलिष्यसि ॥७-१६६-५०॥
tajjagrāha pitā mahyamabravīccaiva sa prabhuḥ। tvaṃ varṣiṣyasi divyāni śastravarṣāṇyanekaśaḥ ॥ anenāstreṇa saṅgrāme tejasā ca jvaliṣyasi ॥7-166-50॥

(That father took it and indeed said to me, the lord: "You will shower divine weapon showers many times. By this weapon, you will shine with brilliance in battle.")

एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्दिवमाचक्रमे प्रभुः। एतन्नारायणादस्त्रं तत्प्राप्तं मम बन्धुना ॥७-१६६-५१॥
evamuktvā sa bhagavāndivamācakrame prabhuḥ। etannārāyaṇādastraṃ tatprāptaṃ mama bandhuna ॥7-166-51॥

(Thus having spoken, the blessed one ascended to the sky, the lord. This weapon from Nārāyaṇa was obtained by my relative.)
After speaking thus, the blessed lord ascended to the heavens. This weapon from Nārāyaṇa was acquired by my kinsman.
तेनाहं पाण्डवांश्चैव पाञ्चालान्मत्स्यकेकयान्। विद्रावयिष्यामि रणे शचीपतिरिवासुरान् ॥७-१६६-५२॥
tenāhaṃ pāṇḍavāṃścaiva pāñcālānmatsyakekayān। vidrāvayiṣyāmi raṇe śacīpatirivāsurān ॥7-166-52॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; अहम् (aham) - I; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - Pāñcālas; मत्स्यकेकयान् (matsyakekayān) - Matsyas and Kekayas; विद्रावयिष्यामि (vidrāvayiṣyāmi) - I will scatter; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - Śacī's husband (Indra); इव (iva) - like; असुरान् (asurān) - demons;]
(By him, I will scatter the Pāṇḍavas, and also the Pāñcālas, Matsyas, and Kekayas in battle, like Śacī's husband (Indra) [scatters] the demons.)
With his power, I will disperse the Pāṇḍavas, as well as the Pāñcālas, Matsyas, and Kekayas in the battle, just as Indra, the husband of Śacī, scatters the demons.
यथा यथाहमिच्छेयं तथा भूत्वा शरा मम। निपतेयुः सपत्नेषु विक्रमत्स्वपि भारत ॥७-१६६-५३॥
yathā yathāhamiccheyaṃ tathā bhūtvā śarā mama। nipateyuḥ sapatneṣu vikramatsvapi bhārata ॥7-166-53॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; यथा (yathā) - as; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छेयं (iccheyaṃ) - wish; तथा (tathā) - so; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; मम (mama) - my; निपतेयुः (nipateyuḥ) - may fall; सपत्नेषु (sapatneṣu) - on the enemies; विक्रमत्सु (vikramatsu) - while advancing; अपि (api) - even; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(As I wish, so may my arrows fall on the advancing enemies, O Bhārata.)

यथेष्टमश्मवर्षेण प्रवर्षिष्ये रणे स्थितः। अयोमुखैश्च विहगैर्द्रावयिष्ये महारथान् ॥ परश्वधांश्च विविधान्प्रसक्ष्येऽहमसंशयम् ॥७-१६६-५४॥
yathetam aśmavarṣeṇa pravarṣiṣye raṇe sthitaḥ। ayomukhaiśca vihagairdrāvayiṣye mahārathān ॥ paraśvadhāṃśca vividhānprasakṣye'hamasaṃśayam ॥7-166-54॥
[यथेष्टम् (yathetam) - as desired; अश्मवर्षेण (aśmavarṣeṇa) - with a shower of stones; प्रवर्षिष्ये (pravarṣiṣye) - I will pour; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; अयोमुखैः (ayomukhaiḥ) - with iron-faced; च (ca) - and; विहगैः (vihagaiḥ) - birds; द्रावयिष्ये (drāvayiṣye) - I will drive away; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great charioteers; परश्वधान् (paraśvadhān) - axes; च (ca) - and; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; प्रसक्ष्ये (prasakṣye) - I will throw; अहम् (aham) - I; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(Standing in battle, I will pour as desired with a shower of stones; with iron-faced birds, I will drive away the great charioteers. Without doubt, I will throw various axes.)
Standing firm in battle, I shall unleash a desired shower of stones; with iron-beaked birds, I will scatter the great charioteers. Without a doubt, I will hurl various axes.
सोऽहं नारायणास्त्रेण महता शत्रुतापन। शत्रून्विध्वंसयिष्यामि कदर्थीकृत्य पाण्डवान् ॥७-१६६-५५॥
so'haṁ nārāyaṇāstreṇa mahatā śatrutāpana। śatrūnvidhvaṁsayiṣyāmi kadarthīkṛtya pāṇḍavān ॥7-166-55॥

(He, I, with the great weapon of Narayana, tormentor of enemies, will destroy the enemies, humiliating the Pandavas.)

(The friend, Brahma, teacher hater, deceitful, highly condemned Panchala outcast and today my life will not be spared.)
The deceitful and highly condemned outcast of Panchala, who hates friends, Brahma, and teachers, will not be spared today.
तच्छ्रुत्वा द्रोणपुत्रस्य पर्यवर्तत वाहिनी। ततः सर्वे महाशङ्खान्दध्मुः पुरुषसत्तमाः ॥७-१६६-५७॥
tacchrutvā droṇaputrasya paryavartata vāhinī। tataḥ sarve mahāśaṅkhāndadhmuḥ puruṣasattamāḥ ॥7-166-57॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; द्रोणपुत्रस्य (droṇaputrasya) - of Drona's son; पर्यवर्तत (paryavartata) - turned back; वाहिनी (vāhinī) - army; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महाशङ्खान् (mahāśaṅkhān) - great conches; दध्मुः (dadhmuḥ) - blew; पुरुषसत्तमाः (puruṣasattamāḥ) - best among men;]

(The Pāṇḍavas, having heard that sound, like the roar of clouds, assembled together with the best of charioteers and deliberated.)

तथोक्त्वा द्रोणपुत्रोऽपि तदोपस्पृश्य भारत। प्रादुश्चकार तद्दिव्यमस्त्रं नारायणं तदा ॥७-१६६-६०॥
tathoktvā droṇaputro'pi tadopaspṛśya bhārata। prāduścakāra taddivyam astraṃ nārāyaṇaṃ tadā ॥7-166-60॥

(Having spoken thus, Drona's son also, having touched water, O Bharata, then manifested that divine weapon of Narayana.)
After speaking thus, Drona's son, having purified himself, O Bharata, then invoked the divine weapon of Narayana.
