krūramāyodhanaṃ jajñe tasminrājasamāgame। rudrasyeva hi kruddhasya nighnatastu paśūnyathā ॥7-165-1॥

हस्तानामुत्तमाङ्गानां कार्मुकाणां च भारत। छत्राणां चापविद्धानां चामराणां च संयुगे ॥७-१६५-२॥

भग्नचक्रै रथैश्चापि पातितैश्च महाध्वजैः। सादिभिश्च हतैः शूरैः सङ्कीर्णा वसुधाभवत् ॥७-१६५-३॥

बाणपातनिकृत्तास्तु योधास्ते कुरुसत्तम। चेष्टन्तो विविधाश्चेष्टा व्यदृश्यन्त महाहवे ॥७-१६५-४॥

वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे घोरे देवासुरोपमे। अब्रवीत्क्षत्रियांस्तत्र धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥ अभिद्रवत संयत्ताः कुम्भयोनिं महारथाः ॥७-१६५-५॥

एष वै पार्षतो वीरो भारद्वाजेन सङ्गतः। घटते च यथाशक्ति भारद्वाजस्य नाशने ॥७-१६५-६॥

(This indeed is the hero of the Parshata, joined by Bharadvaja. He strives to the best of his ability in the destruction of Bharadvaja.)
This is the heroic Parshata, who has joined forces with Bharadvaja. He is striving with all his might to bring about Bharadvaja's downfall.
यादृशानि हि रूपाणि दृश्यन्ते नो महारणे। अद्य द्रोणं रणे क्रुद्धः पातयिष्यति पार्षतः ॥ ते यूयं सहिता भूत्वा कुम्भयोनिं परीप्सत ॥७-१६५-७॥
yādṛśāni hi rūpāṇi dṛśyante no mahāraṇe। adya droṇaṃ raṇe kruddhaḥ pātayiṣyati pārṣataḥ ॥ te yūyaṃ sahitā bhūtvā kumbhayoniṃ parīpsata ॥7-165-7॥

(Such forms are indeed seen by us in the great battle. Today, Drona, angry in battle, will cause the son of Prishata to fall. You all, having become together, desire to protect Agastya.)

युधिष्ठिरसमाज्ञप्ताः सृञ्जयानां महारथाः। अभ्यद्रवन्त संयत्ता भारद्वाजं जिघांसवः ॥७-१६५-८॥

तान्समापततः सर्वान्भारद्वाजो महारथः। अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन मर्तव्यमिति निश्चितः ॥७-१६५-९॥

(Bharadvaja, the great chariot-warrior, was like one with diminished energy. Towards the going to heaven of the sages who speak of Brahman, then he began to release his life by good fight.)

(In a moment, that light disappeared. There was a sound of joy from the delighted celestial beings. Drona went to the world of Brahma, and Dhrishtadyumna was bewildered.)

(The subduer of enemies, soaked with blood, fell from the chariot to the ground, like the red-bodied sun, becoming difficult to see. Thus, the soldiers and people saw him slain in battle.)

(By the grace of the sage, of Krishna, and of the son of Satyavati, we saw a smokeless, blazing meteor going to the sky, standing still, that greatly luminous one.)

(When Droṇa was slain, the dispirited Kurus were rushed by the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas with great speed; then the army was scattered.)
After Droṇa's death, the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, with renewed vigor, charged at the disheartened Kurus, causing their army to scatter.
निहता हयभूयिष्ठाः सङ्ग्रामे निशितैः शरैः। तावका निहते द्रोणे गतासव इवाभवन् ॥७-१६५-५९॥

O Bhārata, why does this army appear to be fleeing in fear? O king, do you not restrain those who are fleeing in the battle?
त्वं चापि न यथापूर्वं प्रकृतिस्थो नराधिप। कर्णप्रभृतयश्चेमे नावतिष्ठन्ति पार्थिवाः ॥७-१६५-९१॥

ते दह्यमाना द्रोणेन सूर्येणेव विराजता। दग्धवीर्या निरुत्साहा बभूवुर्गतचेतसः ॥७-१६५-१०७॥
te dahyamānā droṇena sūryeṇeva virājatā। dagdhavīryā nirutsāhā babhūvurgatacetasaḥ ॥7-165-107॥

तान्दृष्ट्वा पीडितान्बाणैर्द्रोणेन मधुसूदनः। जयैषी पाण्डुपुत्राणामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७-१६५-१०८॥

(This best of the weapon-bearers can never be conquered by others, even by Indra in battle, the chief of chariot-warriors.)
This formidable warrior, the best among those who bear arms, cannot be defeated by others, not even by Indra himself in battle, as he is the chief among chariot-warriors.
ते यूयं धर्ममुत्सृज्य जयं रक्षत पाण्डवाः। यथा वः संयुगे सर्वान्न हन्याद्रुक्मवाहनः ॥७-१६५-११०॥
te yūyaṃ dharmam utsṛjya jayaṃ rakṣata pāṇḍavāḥ। yathā vaḥ saṃyuge sarvān na hanyād rukmavāhanaḥ ॥7-165-110॥

(They, abandoning duty, protect victory, O Pāṇḍavas, so that Rukmavāhana may not kill you all in battle.)
The Pāṇḍavas, abandoning their duty, are urged to protect their victory so that Rukmavāhana does not defeat them in battle.
अश्वत्थाम्नि हते नैष युध्येदिति मतिर्मम। हतं तं संयुगे कश्चिदाख्यात्वस्मै मृषा नरः ॥७-१६५-१११॥
aśvatthāmni hate naiṣa yudhyediti matirmama। hataṃ taṃ saṃyuge kaścidākhyātvasmai mṛṣā naraḥ ॥7-165-111॥

(In Ashvatthama being killed, he would not fight, thus was my thought. Someone falsely told him in battle that he was killed.)
My belief was that if Ashvatthama were killed, he would not fight. However, someone falsely informed him during the battle that Ashvatthama was dead.
एतन्नारोचयद्वाक्यं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। अरोचयंस्तु सर्वेऽन्ये कृच्छ्रेण तु युधिष्ठिरः ॥७-१६५-११२॥
etannārocayadvākyaṃ kuntīputro dhanañjayaḥ। arocayaṃstu sarve'nye kṛcchreṇa tu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥7-165-112॥

(Kunti's son Dhananjaya did not approve this statement. But all others, including Yudhishthira, approved it with difficulty.)

भीमसेनस्तु सव्रीडमब्रवीत्पितरं तव। अश्वत्थामा हत इति तच्चाबुध्यत ते पिता ॥७-१६५-११३॥
bhīmasenastu savrīḍamabravītpitaraṃ tava। aśvatthāmā hata iti taccābudhyata te pitā ॥7-165-113॥

(Bhimasena, however, bashfully said to your father, "Ashwatthama is killed," and your father understood that.)
Bhimasena, with a sense of shame, informed your father that "Ashwatthama is killed," and your father comprehended it.
स शङ्कमानस्तन्मिथ्या धर्मराजमपृच्छत। हतं वाप्यहतं वाजौ त्वां पिता पुत्रवत्सलः ॥७-१६५-११४॥
sa śaṅkamānas tanmithyā dharmarājam apṛcchat। hataṃ vāpy ahataṃ vājau tvāṃ pitā putravatsalaḥ ॥7-165-114॥

(He, doubting that it was false, asked Dharmaraja: "Are you killed or not killed in battle, your father being affectionate to his son?")
He, suspecting deceit, questioned Dharmaraja whether he was slain or unharmed in battle, as his father was very fond of him.
तदतथ्यभये मग्नो जये सक्तो युधिष्ठिरः। अश्वत्थामानमाहेदं हतः कुञ्जर इत्युत ॥ भीमेन गिरिवर्ष्माणं मालवस्येन्द्रवर्मणः ॥७-१६५-११५॥
tadatathyabhaye magno jaye sakto yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। aśvatthāmānamāhedaṃ hataḥ kuñjara ityuta ॥ bhīmena girivarṣmāṇaṃ mālavasyendravarmaṇaḥ ॥7-165-115॥
[तत् (tat) - that; अतथ्य (atathya) - untruth; भये (bhaye) - in fear; मग्नः (magnaḥ) - immersed; जये (jaye) - in victory; सक्तः (saktaḥ) - attached; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; अश्वत्थामानम् (aśvatthāmānam) - Ashwatthama; आह (āha) - said; इदम् (idam) - this; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; कुञ्जरः (kuñjaraḥ) - elephant; इति (iti) - thus; उत (uta) - indeed; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; गिरिवर्ष्माणम् (girivarṣmāṇam) - mountain-like; मालवस्य (mālavasya) - of Malava; इन्द्रवर्मणः (indravarmaṇaḥ) - Indravarman;]
(That Yudhishthira, immersed in the fear of untruth, attached to victory, said this: "Ashwatthama, the elephant, is indeed killed by Bhima, the mountain-like Indravarman of Malava.")
Yudhishthira, overwhelmed by the fear of deceit and eager for victory, declared that Ashwatthama, the elephant, was slain by Bhima, who was as mighty as the mountain-like Indravarman of Malava.
उपसृत्य तदा द्रोणमुच्चैरिदमभाषत। यस्यार्थे शस्त्रमाधत्से यमवेक्ष्य च जीवसि ॥ पुत्रस्ते दयितो नित्यं शोऽश्वत्थामा निपातितः ॥७-१६५-११६॥
upasṛtya tadā droṇamuccairidamabhāṣata। yasyārthe śastramādhatse yamavekṣya ca jīvasi ॥ putraste dayito nityaṃ śo'śvatthāmā nipātitaḥ ॥7-165-116॥

(Approaching then Drona loudly this spoke: "For whose sake you take up the weapon, whom considering you live, your beloved son Ashwatthama indeed has been killed.")
Approaching Drona, he loudly spoke: "The one for whom you wield your weapon and live by considering, your beloved son Ashwatthama, has indeed been killed."
तच्छ्रुत्वा विमनास्तत्र आचार्यो महदप्रियम्। नियम्य दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि नायुध्यत यथा पुरा ॥७-१६५-११७॥
tacchrutvā vimanāstatra ācāryo mahadapriyam। niyamya divyānyastrāṇi nāyudhyata yathā purā ॥7-165-117॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - disheartened; तत्र (tatra) - there; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - the teacher; महत् (mahat) - great; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant; नियम्य (niyamya) - controlling; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; न (na) - not; अयुध्यत (ayudhyata) - fought; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before;]
(Having heard that, the teacher there was disheartened by the great unpleasantness. Controlling the divine weapons, he did not fight as before.)
Upon hearing that, the teacher was deeply disheartened by the grave unpleasantness. He restrained the divine weapons and refrained from fighting as he used to before.
तं दृष्ट्वा परमोद्विग्नं शोकोपहतचेतसम्। पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतः क्रूरकर्मा समाद्रवत् ॥७-१६५-११८॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā paramodvignaṁ śokopahatacetasam। pāñcālarājasya sutaḥ krūrakarmā samādravat ॥7-165-118॥

(Seeing him extremely agitated, whose mind was afflicted by grief, the son of the king of Panchala, of cruel deeds, rushed towards (him).)
Upon seeing him deeply disturbed and with a mind afflicted by sorrow, the son of the Panchala king, known for his cruel actions, charged towards him.
तं दृष्ट्वा विहितं मृत्युं लोकतत्त्वविचक्षणः। दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यथोत्सृज्य रणे प्राय उपाविशत् ॥७-१६५-११९॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā vihitaṁ mṛtyuṁ lokatattvavicakṣaṇaḥ। divyānyastrāṇyathotsṛjya raṇe prāya upāviśat ॥7-165-119॥

(Seeing him ordained to death, wise in the essence of the world, abandoning divine weapons, he almost sat down in battle.)
Seeing that his death was ordained, the wise one, understanding the essence of the world, abandoned his divine weapons and almost sat down in the battlefield.
ततोऽस्य केशान्सव्येन गृहीत्वा पाणिना तदा। पार्षतः क्रोशमानानां वीराणामच्छिनच्छिरः ॥७-१६५-१२०॥
tato'sya keśānsavyena gṛhītvā pāṇinā tadā। pārṣataḥ krośamānānāṃ vīrāṇāmacchinacchiraḥ ॥7-165-120॥

(Then, having seized his hair with the left hand, Pārṣata cut off the head of the crying heroes.)

("Not to be killed, not to be killed," they said from all sides. In the same way, Arjuna descended from the vehicle and rushed at him.)
"Do not kill him, do not kill him," they shouted from all directions. Similarly, Arjuna got down from his chariot and charged towards him.
उद्यम्य बाहू त्वरितो ब्रुवाणश्च पुनः पुनः। जीवन्तमानयाचार्यं मा वधीरिति धर्मवित् ॥७-१६५-१२२॥
udyamya bāhū tvarito bruvāṇaśca punaḥ punaḥ। jīvantamānayācāryaṃ mā vadhīriti dharmavit ॥7-165-122॥

(Raising his arms hurriedly, and speaking again and again, "Bring the teacher alive, do not kill him," thus said the knower of dharma.)

तथापि वार्यमाणेन कौरवैरर्जुनेन च। हत एव नृशंसेन पिता तव नरर्षभ ॥७-१६५-१२३॥

(Nevertheless, being restrained by the Kauravas and Arjuna, your father was indeed killed by the cruel one, O best of men.)
Despite the efforts of the Kauravas and Arjuna to restrain him, your father was ultimately killed by the cruel one, O best of men.

(The soldiers then all fled, afflicted by fear. We also were disheartened, O sinless one, with your father slain.)
The soldiers, overwhelmed by fear, fled. We too lost our spirit when your father was killed, O sinless one.

tacchrutvā droṇaputrastu nidhanaṃ piturāhave। krodhamāhārayattīvraṃ padāhata ivoragaḥ ॥7-165-125॥

(Having heard that, the son of Droṇa, in the battle, brought forth intense anger, like a serpent trampled by a foot.)
Upon hearing of his father's death in battle, Droṇa's son was filled with intense anger, as if he were a serpent that had been trampled.
